The Holy Belt of the Virgin, a Relic ofthe Assumption – August 30, 2016

According to a very ancient legend, (attested e.g.by St. John Damascene in the 8th century, amongothers,) when it came time for the Virgin Mary’searthly life to end, all of the Apostles were miracu-lously brought to Jerusalem to be present for Herdeath; St. Thomas, however, was late (again!).When She had died, they laid Her body to rest ina tomb in the garden of Gethsemani, outside thecity; three days later, St. Thomas arrived in Jeru-salem, and wished to venerate the body. Onopening the tomb, the Apostles discovered that itwas nowhere to be found, and a sweet odor cameforth, confirming that “Whom once it pleased totake the flesh from the Virgin Mary, and become a

man, and be born (of Her)… and who after birth preserved Her virginity incorrupt, italso pleased, after Her passing, to honor Her immaculate body … by translating (itto Heaven) before the common and universal resurrection.”

The Beginning of theSchool Year

September 7, 2016The month of August liturgically

celebrated the blessing of the fruits of theharvest on the Feast of the

Transfiguration and a blessing of flowersand herbs on the Feast of the Dormition

of the Theotokos. In our civic calendar thechildren are back or will soon be back to

school and Labour Day sadly signalsSummer vacations are over. And hope

that they were enjoyable. Our liturgicalyear begins September 1st with the

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary onSeptember 8th and the Exaltation of theHoly Cross on September 14th. bringingus back from our Summer adventures to

focus back into a routine.

A big thank you to the volunteers whohelped move and set up tables, chairsand furniture in preparation for the major

floor cleaning of the carpets and the auditoriumfloor by Bee Clean.

The Church New YearSeptember 1, 2016

Every time we enter upon another yearwhether it be civil or ecclesiastical we havethe opportunity to reflect upon the past and

make changes for a better future. Let usask ourselves: What practical changes can Imake which will allow the Lord to act morein my life? Can I do more in my spiritual life– prayer, study, almsgiving, stewardship?

Can we do more as a community –outreach, charity, evangelism? How can I

personally and we collectively play a part inmaking this coming year better than the

previous year?

Coming soon!!CATECHISM

2016 and run untilMay 2017

August 29th is the feast day of the beheadingof John the Baptist, the herald ofChrist. Like Elijah, John came out of the wildernessto fearlessly proclaim the word of God, but whatElijah and the other prophets could only glimpsedarkly, the coming of the Messiah, John saw withhis own eyes. The last and greatest of the proph-ets, John fulfilled the role of Elijah as proclaimed bythe prophet Malachi:

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet beforethe coming of the great and terrible day of the

Lord.

Saint John the Baptist is a standing rebuke to all Catholics who become luke-warm in the Faith and are simply going through the motions. In Christ, theCreator of the Universe came to us, walked among us as one of us, and diedfor us. Our reaction to those astonishing facts should always be a faith aszealous as that shown by the Baptist unto death.
