For the second year in a row, Vashon will welcome the De-

cember holidays with a weekend of festivities.

Winterfest Weekend will showcase the merchants, artists and spirit of Vashon with a variety of activi-ties that will begin Friday, Nov. 30, and continue until Sunday evening. Adults and children, Vashon residents and guests will all find activities in the spirit of the season.

The art gallery tour, typically the first Friday of the month, will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and will lead into the annual Holiday Art Studio Tour, where artists will open their studios and guests can stop by to enjoy demonstrations and take the opportunity to buy holiday gifts.

In downtown Vashon on Saturday, merchants will accept Beachcomber coupons all day and stay open late for shoppers and revelers.

The holiday season bolsters the cof-fers of many Island businesses, and Sue Stinson of the Vashon Chamber of Commerce, an organizer of the weekend, said the chamber hopes this event will draw guests not just out of their homes here on the Island, but from off-Island as well.

“What we’re hoping for ultimately is for people to come over here and do their Christmas shopping,” she said. “Off-Island dollars are welcome this time of year.”

Santa’s arrival, of course, is a big part of the holiday extravaganza weekend as well, and he will come to town Saturday evening this year. A parade, complete with the Vashon High School marching band, will help make Santa and Mrs. Claus feel

welcome. Those who want to join the parade should be at Vashon Plaza/Vashon Market by 5:30 p.m., when it will begin to make its way to the Village Green for the annual lighting of the tree, set for roughly 6 p.m. Fol-lowing tradition on Vashon, third-graders will lead the community in the singing of “O Christmas Tree,” and there may be other surprises as well, according to Stinson.

“We’re trying to plan something really nice for the Village Green this year,” she said. “It could be a really special tree lighting.”

After the festivities in the Village Green, Santa, Mrs. Claus and Rudolph will linger downtown, greeting chil-dren and handing out candy canes.

A fairly new event in Vashon’s holi-day celebrations is the Gingerbread House Competition, a contest in creativity among Island merchants.

The competition began last year and was a hit, according to Stinson. By request, it will last through the next weekend so that more people can enjoy the seemingly edible works of art. The houses will be on display at downtown businesses, and people are encouraged to vote on their favorites. Ballots will be at every house, with the voting box located in the hallway outside Blooms & Things. When the voting closes, a winner for a prize will be drawn from the entries.

Throughout Winterfest Weekend, a variety of activities will be going on: Boy Scouts and others will sell Christmas trees; Santa will be in his cottage for photos on Sunday; the chorale will sing, and young dancers will perform the holiday classic “The Nutcracker.”

Vashon is a welcoming place in the holidays, Stinson noted, with

downtown stores sporting garlands and carrying a variety of merchan-dise for creative gift giving. And many business owners know — and genuinely appreciate — many of their customers.

Jim Marsh, the head of the cham-ber, has a new tagline for the week-end, Stinson says: “The cure for the common mall.”

W hat better way to raise the curtain on the season and beat the winter blahs than to

take in a holiday show on Vashon? Hundreds of Island kids, choristers, dancers, ac-

tors and musicians have gift-wrapped some special upcoming presentations, filled with equal parts nostalgia and bright anticipation of the holidays. Get tickets now, and hand them out to your friends and neighbors.

Vashon Island ChoraleThe 80-voice strong Vashon Island Chorale will

present “Celebration: Music for Chanukah and Christmas,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at Bethel Church.

The concert, directed by maestro Gary Cannon, will include the world premiere of “Eight Days of Chanukah,” by Northwest composer Abraham Ka-plan. Kaplan was one of the last half-century’s most notable choral conductors, having worked closely with Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky and many other major musical personalities. Vashon Opera’s Andy Krikawa will sing a baritone solo in one of the movements of Kaplan’s work.

The concert will also include several favor-ite Christmas carols, including Zoltan Kodály’s

chant-inspired arrangement of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” popular versions of “Still, Still, Still,” “Carol of the Bells” and John Rutter’s raucous take on “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Violinists Karin Choo and Gaye Detzer will accompany the chorale in Edward Elgar’s “The Snow.”

‘The Nutcracker’More than 100 young ballet dancers will take

the stage for Vashon Center for Dance’s annual production of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, and 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Vashon High School theater.

The dance company, affiliated with Vashon Allied Arts, is helmed by Christine Juarez. Each year, she tweaks “The Nutcracker,” adding cameo roles for community members and parents, while main-taining the time-honored traditions of the beloved ballet. Note that a special, abbreviated version of the ballet will be performed for school groups and toddlers at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7.

Another youth dance company, Island Dance Theatre, will perform excerpts from “The Nut-cracker” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 22 and 23, at the VHS theater. The company, sponsored by Vashon Island Community Ballet and the Vashon Park District, is directed by longtime dancer and teacher Kim Gallo.

Tickets, $10 per person or $22 for a family of up to five, can be purchased at the park district office or at the door.

‘It’s a Wonderful Life’The Blue Heron stage will be transformed into

the mythical all-American town of Bedford Falls in a Drama Dock production of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” to be performed Dec. 21 through 30 (exclud-ing Christmas Day) at The Blue Heron Arts Center.

The show, which will be fully staged, is a radio play based on the famous Frank Capra film, star-ring Jimmy Stewart as a kind-hearted businessman caught in a downward spiral of disillusionment until he meet an angel who helps him realize what a difference he has made in the world.

Vashon’s take on this Christmas classic, directed by Islander Elise Morrill, will open at 7:30 p.m. Fri-day, Dec. 21, followed by a Saturday night show and a Sunday matinee. It will continue the following week, with evening shows on Dec. 26 to Dec. 29 and a final matinee on Sunday, Dec. 30. Check www.vashon alliedarts.org for show times and ticket prices.

‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’Another holiday treat — a youth theater produc-

tion of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” — will

be unwrapped at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14 and 15, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Blue Heron Arts Center.

The production, directed by Marita Ericksen, will boast the talents of 20 young thespians, ages 6 to 16, taking the stage to enact the hilarious story of an unruly band of kids who take over a church Christmas pageant.

A few notable Island adults, including Paul Col-well, will have roles in the play. The cast will also lift their voices in song, with a concert of holiday music supplementing the one-hour play. Tickets, $7 and $10, will be sold at the Blue Heron, Heron’s Nest and Vashon Bookshop.

Vashon High School band concertThe Vashon High School band, under the able di-

rection of band teacher Ken Quehrn, will perform its annual winter concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5.

Holiday music on tap for the performance in-cludes “I Saw Three Ships,” “Feliz Navidad” and “A Christmas Festival,” a well-known collection of traditional carols arranged by the legendary Leroy Anderson.

The McMurray Middle School band will have its concert at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12.

Both concerts will be at their respective schools.

For the love of booksVashon is an Island of readers, evidenced in part by the fact that we have an independent book store — the Vashon Bookshop — that continues to thrive. Staff writer Susan Riemer paid the owners, Nancy Katica and Morgan Guion, a visit recently in search of some gift ideas for the readers on your list. She returned to the office with these recommendations.

Ten great books for adultsThe Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers. The Washington Post called this book, a National Book Award finalist, a novel of “grit, grace and blood.” It is a harrow-ing story of two young soldiers trying to stay alive during the Iraq War; only one of them does. Powers is an Iraq war veteran who went on to study English and writing and received his MFA in poetry this year. Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon. In his eighth and most recent novel, named after the famous street between Oakland and Berkeley, Chabon’s story centers on the people living on this street, in particular a black family and a white family and their joint business, Brokeland Records. The Los Angeles Times says, “Telegraph Avenue is so exuberant, it’s as if Michael Chabon has pulled joy from the air and squeezed it into the shape of words.”Wild by Cheryl Strayed. Oprah Winfrey’s latest pick for her book selection is a memoir of Strayed’s 1,100-mile solo trek of the Pacific Crest Trail after the untimely death of her mother and the dis-solution of her marriage. Strayed is also known for her popular online advice column, Dear Sugar, and the resulting book, “Tiny Beautiful Things.” Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher by Timothy Egan. A Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Seattleite, Egan turns his prodigious skill to Edward Curtis, the photographer who was a friend of presidents, vaudeville stars and the leading thinkers of his day. At age 32 in 1900, he changed direction and dedicated himself to photographing Native Americans before their way of life disappeared. Mink River by Brian Doyle. In a lyrical style, this novel tells the story of the

people, animals and soggy landscapes of the small town of Neawanaka on the Oregon coast. The Round House by Louse Erdrich. The Pulitzer Prize finalist transports readers to the Ojibwe Reservation in North Dakota in this story of a boy who seeks justice and understanding in the wake of a crime that upends his family. Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver. In her first novel since 2009, Kingsolver tells a story of a personal awakening and weaves that with larger themes of environmental stewardship and cli-mate change. In the book, Dellarobia Turnbow’s life begins to change when she sees a strange vision in the Appalachian hills — a lake seemingly on fire. The story takes off from there. Tiny Homes: Simple Shelter by Lloyd Kahn. The book, a delight for the eyes and the imagination, includes 1,300 photos of a variety of small homemade shelters — on land, water and wheels

— and tells the stories of the owner-builders who are part of the new downsizing trend.Elegy of Eddie: A Maisie Dobbs Novel by Jacqueline Winspear. Named one of the “Nine Mysteries Every Thinking Woman Should Read” by Oprah Winfrey, this book is the ninth in a series that focuses on the fictional Dobbs, a psychologist and investigator in London

after World War I. Eddie Pettit was a gentle soul with a gift for work-ing with horses, but when he is killed in a violent accident, people want to know who killed him and why.The Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny. Book number eight in the pop-ular Inspector Ganache series is set in a remote monastery in Quebec, where the monks have taken a vow of silence, but a battle, fought in near silence, has led to murder.

Five fine reads for kidsSeraphina by Rachel Hartman. Middle readers, ages 5 to 12, who enjoy fan-tasy and science fiction, are bound to like this story, which introduces mathematically minded dragons in an alternative-medieval world. The author plans to create a series with this book included in it.The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan. Part of the popular Heroes of Olympus series, this story is told by four different demigods, and the reader takes a journey across land and sea to Rome, where important discoveries, surprising sacrifices and unspeakable horrors await. Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos. This year’s winner of the Newberry Medal and the Scott O’Dell Award for historical fiction, the book tells the story of 12-year-old Jack Gantos, when he is “grounded for life” by his feuding parents, but excitement comes his way when his mom loans him out to help

an old neighbor with an unusual chore — typewriting obituaries filled with stories about the people who founded his town. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. The story is told by a 16-year-old cancer patient named Hazel, whose parents force her to attend a support group, where she meets and falls in

love with a fellow teenager who is an ex-basket-ball player and an amputee.

Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey. Charlie Bucktin is a 13-year-old boy living in an Australian mining town. He feels socially awkward and uncoordinated in a town that values sporting ability. His best friend is Jeffrey Lu, who experi-ences racial discrimination

throughout the novel. On a summer evening, Charlie is visited by Jasper Jones, 14, an outcast because of his mixed heritage. Jasper takes Charlie to his secret glade in the bush, where they make a terrible discovery.

Six reads by Vashon authorsWill Sparrow’s Road by Karen Cushman. Will Sparrow, age 13, is a liar and thief who runs away and meets a series of con artists. Each time he is tricked, he resolves to trust no one, but he cannot keep his guard up forever.Family Walks on Vashon Island by Bianca Perla. The book, a high seller at Vashon Bookshop, describes 55 nature walks on Vashon and Maury Islands. Perla, who has a doctorate in ecology, includes “naturalist notes” in the book, exploring the rich ecology of Vashon, its plant and animal life and ways to engage children in nature.An American River by Mary Bruno. Bruno, who grew up on the shores of New Jersey’s Passaic River, kayaks its length, from its inception in the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge to its mouth in a federal Superfund site. Along the way, she explores the history of the region, the ecology of the river and the cast of

characters trying to save this polluted but once mighty waterway. Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple. In a patchwork mix of memos, emails, journal entries and other exchanges, the novel, set in Seattle, tells the story of Bernadette Fox, a brilliant but off-kilter mother of a level-headed teenager, Bee, who is left to solve the mystery of Bernadette’s sud-den disappearance.The Weird World Rolls On: A Collection of Poems edited by Jean Davies Okimoto. The book includes

work by 18 Vashon poets and is published by Endicott and Hugh Books, located on Vashon.

Vashon Island Pet Protectors will once again hold its holiday wreath sale the weekend following Thanksgiving. VIPP’s all-volunteer crew will create artful wreaths and swags made from fresh, locally gathered fir, cedar, holly and cones. The wreaths, many of them made right there, on the spot, will be adorned with ribbons, bows and other accessories. LOOKING FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL?

Buying local and shopping artful is easy on Vashon, thanks in large part to a 30-year tradition — the twice-annual Vashon Island Art Studio Tour. The holiday edition of the tour takes place this year from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Dec. 1, 2, 8 and 9.

This free, self-guided tour is a chance to hop in your car to roam Vashon’s main streets, back roads and far-flung corners, stepping into those rich and lovely places where art is made. Tour venues include barns, workshops, yurts, an old auto repair shop, a restau-rant, at least one hallway and a couple of well-established shops and galleries.

At those places, you may find an artist at work. And you’ll certainly find an array of potential gifts — from stocking stuffers to wall pieces to large outdoor sculptures.

Who are the artists behind the tour? According to local cerami-cist Liz Lewis, the tour started decades ago and has been main-

tained by “a fluid group of Island artists who share a commitment to developing the tour as a cooper-ative and sustainable way to show their artwork.”

This year, the tour will boast work by almost 200 artists, shown in 38 spaces. Candlemakers, wood-workers, glass blowers, jewelers, basket weavers, potters, painters, sculptors, photographers, print-makers and mixed-media artists are all represented.

The tour also includes Vashon Allied Arts’ invitational “Masters in Miniature” show, which runs throughout the month at the Blue Heron Gallery. Tiny paintings, pottery, glass, wood, tile, sculp-ture, printmaking, mixed media, fiber and photography by 40 art-ists are included in that exhibit.

Another large venue will be at Barnworks, a collaborative gallery well-known to many Islanders. What makes the show special this year is that it is the last chance to visit the magical space, tucked in

the woods off of Cove Road. After the tour, Barnworks will close, marking the end of a 30-year run for its members — a group of ac-complished local painters, sculp-tors and craftspeople.

Lewis calls the retirement of Barnworks from the tour a chance “to look back with fondness.” But it’s also, she said, “the beginning of a new chapter. We will be seeing many of our favorite Barnworks artists in new venues, mixing it up in new ways.”

Two shops on Vashon specialize in locally made arts and crafts, and to step inside either is to get a sense of the breadth and depth of the Island’s artistic talents.

Inside SAW, one finds elegant rolling pins made of solid wood, recycled mirrors encased in walnut, brightly painted wooden birds to place on top of fence posts and delicate hang-ing terrariums. Candles, soaps, jewelry, clocks, lamps, photographs and intricately painted gourds adorn the tiny shop as well.

Indeed, the place is stuffed, showcasing the work of some 45 Vashon artists.

SAW’s name stands for Starving Artists Works but is also a nod to the shop’s former life, the spot next to the hardware store where Islanders got their saws sharpened or repaired. It opened in May, run by five members who mostly wanted a venue to sell their own cre-ative wares. They take turns minding the shop, said Kelly Brynn, one of the members.

“We try to have things that are affordable,” Brynn said.

And indeed, the prices vary widely, from button pins made by Heather Brynn for $16 to Ray Pfortner’s encaustics for around $150.

Across the street, at the Heron’s Nest, man-

ager Ellen Parker has transformed the bustling shop into a brightly painted store that caters to a wide demographic of shoppers.

Affordable cloth bags with bold prints share the space with striking monotypes by famed Vashon artist Ilse Reimnitz. Pottery by Liz Lewis boasts new, bold colors. Walking sticks lean against the counter. Small, affordable fabric squares adorned with painted eggs line a wall.

“We’re selling more craft and less fine art,” Parker said.

Holiday markets offer beautiful hand-made waresDozens of Vashon’s artisans will once again offer their goods at four special holiday markets — all of them held in the warmth of McMurray Middle School. The holiday markets are held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on four consecutive Saturdays — Nov. 24, and Dec. 1, 8 and 15. Twenty to 25 vendors will sell an array of goods — candles, soaps, hand-knit scarves, jewelry, cut-ting boards, cards, pottery, Christmas ornaments and much more.The holiday markets are an extension of the popu-lar Farmers Market held at the Village Green; expect to find some fresh food as well as a fan-tastic bake sale, a fund-raiser for the Market Bucks program, which supports

people on Food Stamps who want to shop at the Farmers Market. But for the most part, these indoor markets show-case some of Vashon’s best craftspeople — all of whom juried to be included as a vendor.“These are all professional-level artisans,” said Rebecca

Think about holiday gifts that are always in style, and chocolate — in its many variations — comes to mind.

Chocolate choices are plentiful, but this year Islanders on the lookout for the perfect gift may find themselves tempted by Tease Chocolates, new sweets made on Vashon.

Julie Farrell, an Islander and chocolatier who owns the business, has been selling her small-batch, handcrafted chocolate at the Farmers Market since April, and it is safe to say she and her mouth-watering wares have developed a following, with regulars who stop by and purchase their favorite items and Island stores set to carry several of the confections.

“We’ve had such a positive response from the community,” Julie said.

The most popular item is Salty Mer-maid, a bar made of bittersweet choco-late with sweet toffee and fleur de sel — light flakes of sea salt. But Tease Chocolates offers a variety of treats that

vie with the mermaid for attention, including additional bars, such as Spicy Mayan, made of milk chocolate and mild Pasilla pepper, and Geishas Pleasure, made of dark chocolate with matcha green tea and puffed brown rice. Other offerings include Pistachio Butternut Crunch, a butter crunch topped with dark chocolate and pistachios. Truffles — classic dark chocolate and several variations that Farrell has dreamed up herself — include Bees Knees, with ha-zelnut brown ale, bee pollen and honey, and the Cinnamon Girl Truffle, a treat Julie spent more than a year perfect-ing and that tastes like a cinnamon roll within a chocolate truffle.

Rounding out the list are molded chocolates enhanced with a sprinkling of luster dust, chocolate-covered ginger, and s’mores — with the marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate all made by hand. Julie began offering s’mores this summer, she said, and they have proved

so popular that she will continue offering them through the holidays. Some people roast the marshmallows while others microwave the treat, and still others open the bag and eat all the ingredients straight from there. New this winter is Julie’s own blend of hot chocolate, and coming in the new year is a rare treat: a bar called Dark Arts — a chocolate bar Julie and her husband Topher Farrell, who assists with the business, will make truly from scratch, from just cocoa beans, sugar and cocoa butter.

Chocolate, in its purest form is a superfood, Topher said, with many anti-oxidant proper-ties. In stores, he noted, nearly all of the chocolate is made from roasted beans, as roast-ing extends the beans’ shelf life and makes them easier to transport. But roasting diminishes the beans’ flavor, he said, and after exper-imentation at home, the Farrells say their own chocolate will be made with raw beans.

“We’ve been blown away by the flavor,” Topher said.

Making chocolate from scratch is

a complicated, multi-step process. Their first batch took a week from

start to finish, Julie said, and they can do no more than 10 pounds at a time.

The couple say they are also committed to making sure the chocolate is as “green” as possible, from the

beans to the sugar to the packaging, and it contains no additives.

“We are not going to put a bunch of junk in our choco-late, Topher said.

Self-described “food nerds” who love to cook just about anything, they say they have enjoyed the pro-cess of growing the business and coming to know a great deal about the art of mak-ing chocolate.

“It’s good. It’s good for you. And it’s a lot of fun,” Topher said.

King Caramel, hand-crafted caramel candies made by Is-lander Hedy Anderson, are available in boxes and individually at The Little House and the Farmers Market. The soft and scrumptious candies come in six varieties, including Roasted Pecan, Or-ganic Agave and Black Licorice.

Islanders Anu and Birbal Rana make treats they call “junk free and guilt free.” Anu Rana’s Healthy Kitchen, available at the Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie and Café Luna, offers cookies, bars and assorted treats made with nutritious ingredients: nuts, fruit and natural sugars. They contain no flour, dairy, sugar, eggs, soy or preservatives.

Vashon has long prided itself in its local wine, with many stores and restaurants carrying a selection of bottles from Island vintners, some even made with Vashon grapes. Re-cently, however, Vashon’s liquor scene has burgeoned with new options from Island entrepreneurs.

This season, consider buying a growler of Burton Blonde for that beer lover in your life, or perhaps just enjoy a cocktail at The Hardware Store Restaurant made with Vashon vodka.

Just in time for the holidays, Island-ers can now purchase beer, cider and even hard alcohol made right on the Island and in some cases with Vashon-grown ingredients.

Vashon Brewing CompanyAbout a year ago, Islander Cliff

Goodman released his first batch of beer, and since then “Cliff’s Beer” has become a familiar term.

Out of a small outbuilding at his home near Quartermaster Harbor, Goodman produces a constantly

changing variety of ales, lagers, por-ters and more.

A former finance director who has been home-brewing for years, Goodman prides himself in his unique blends — he’s constantly experi-menting to come up with new tastes. He re-cently brewed an Alder Smoked Porter — using Island wood, of course — with a slight choco-late taste. And for the holidays? Goodman just began using some Vashon-grown hops in his beer, and he’s considering a coffee-flavored stout for the winter.

Beer from Vashon Brewing Company, the business’s formal name, is sold in quart-size refillable mini growlers at Mingle-ment. It’s also on tap at several local bars and eater-ies, including The Hardware Store Restaurant, the Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie and Rock Island

Pizza and Pub. And if you can’t stand that ferry ride without a cold one, Cliff’s Beer can be purchased on the Issaquah.

Cliff’s is also the only outfit on Vashon to offer kegs. To reserve one for that holiday party, call 853-1719.

Dragon’s Head CiderWes and Laura Cherry’s young

two-acre apple orchard in the center of the Island hasn’t produced much

fruit yet, but the couple’s hard cider is already finding a niche on

Vashon and making its way off the Island.

Dragon’s Head Cider, cur-rently made with a blend of cider-specific apples from a Vashon grower and an off-Island one, is available at specialty beer and wine stores in Seattle, as well as two Vashon locations — Thrift-way and Minglement.

The Cherrys, for-mer Seattleites who

moved to the Island two years ago to raise a family, have long been home brew-ers and cider connoisseurs. Shortly after moving, they realized a dream to leave the corporate world — Wes was a software engineer — and do something they love.

They took classes from an international cider author-ity and enlisted the help of Islander Bob Norton, a retired horticulture profes-sor and local fruit expert, in designing and planting their new orchard.

Their product, which hit the shelves last summer, is

a traditional, semi-dry English cider with “hints of honeysuckle and per-simmon,” their website says.

“The vision came together really nicely,” Laura said, “and we’re having a lot of fun.”

Seattle Distilling CompanyDon’t let the name fool you — Se-

attle Distilling Company is in fact on Vashon.

The distillery is a dream recently turned reality by three Island men — a real estate agent, an IT manager and a graphic designer. Their state-of-the-art, largely hand-crafted distillery housed in a large red cabin at Center, has created a buzz for months. And now the men’s first product, Rocket Vodka, has hit the shelves just in time for the holidays.

The men say their new vodka is a high-quality spirit, smooth and clean,

and among the many botanicals to flavor it is Vashon lavender. The

Hardware Store Restaurant will create a special drink to promote

the new product.“I’m excited that someone on

Vashon is taking the bull by the horns,” said Alex Van Amburg, the restaurant’s manager.

The distillery’s owners, David Waterworth, Ishan Dillon and Paco Joyce, say they plan to release a gin next. They’ll eventually put out whiskey, spiced rum and other spirits, and they’ll infuse the drinks with local flavors — some-thing they can easily do as a small operation.

“There is an endless sense of how you can make your prod-uct taste,” Waterworth said.
