HOK EmbraCES our responsibility as one of the world’s largest, most influential design firms to advance sustainable design for every building type, geographic region and budget level . We are committed to incorporating sustainability into our projects and our operations .

• Protect ecosystems and support restoration of natural systems.

• Promote development of livable communities.

• Use resources efficiently, including energy, water, land and materials.

• Create healthy interior environments.

• Move toward eliminating waste and pollution …in the production of material used in the project. …in the construction of the project. …in the short and long term use of the project.

• Eliminate dependence on fossil fuels …to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. …to increase the use of renewable energy sources.

By designing solutions that enhance aesthetic goals, limit resource consumption, improve building performance, and promote health and productivity, HOK is leading the profession toward an increasingly sustainable future .

WHilE SuSTainabiliTy has been a core value for 15 years at HOK, we had a banner year in 2008 .

At the same time, we must focus on several priority areas: expanding the use of Building Information Modeling to drive sustainable performance, achieving significant sustainable outcomes in our projects including carbon reduction, and integrating a consistent, high degree of sustainability in our practices .

To drive our sustainable efforts, the Board of Directors adopted a set of measurable policies in 2007-2008 . The following report details our actual results versus the goals .

Recognized as the No . 1 “top green design firm” in •Engineering News-Record’s inaugural ranking . Formed a unique alliance with the Biomimicry Guild . •15 projects currently seeking LEED Platinum certification . •36% increase in LEED Accredited Professionals; •40% increase in LEED certified projects; 58% increase in registered projects from previous year .Created robust global network of sustainable design •leaders and managers .Initiated “Go Barefoot Day” as part of our Emissions: •2010 carbon emissions reduction goal and completed a benchmark carbon footprint of our practice .

With the full implementation of Revit across HOK in 2008, the opportunities to expand the use of BIM to drive sustainable performance has also grown. Projects across HOK have begun to use Ecotect along with other analysis tools to study climate and weather analysis, daylighting, solar studies, and energy use early in design.

In addition to project piloting, we focused in 2008 on identifying and testing a broad range of available software to understand their project value and validity. Tested software included Ecotect, IES, Radiance, Daysim, & Green Building Studio. This will lead to a recommendation of a suite of performance analysis tools for broad rollout in 2009.

Our 2008 GOal #1 Initiate measurement of HOK’s carbon emissions in our offices and projects.

After the Fall 2007 rollout of HOK’s Emissions: 2010 50% carbon reduction commitment, our 2008 efforts first focused on identifying ways to measure HOK’s carbon emissions. We successfully completed the first carbon footprint benchmark of HOK’s practices – looking at our offices’ energy usage, business air travel and commuting. We also piloted in HOK’s Los Angeles and St. Louis offices installations of energy sub-meters that link to a live feed showing energy usage at day, week and month intervals. HOK has learned a great deal about the intricacies of live metering and are exploring ways to expand and improve upon this pilot for other offices.

FIRsT CARBON FOOTPRINT BENCHMARK OF HOK’s PRACTICEs OF 2007 DATA A subsequent analysis is underway for 2008. A key finding was that over half of our footprint was due to business air travel. HOK’s implementation of expanded virtual meeting technologies across the firm will help in reducing our air travel carbon footprint.
