HOK helps companies plan and design innovative facilities that respond to the business needs of today and tomorrow.

HOK’s Workplace Solutions teams draw on current benchmarking trends to help companies reduce occupancy costs, leverage technology, attract and keep the best people, and enhance brand image. But we also keep an eye on the future, designing flexible environments to accommodate changing technologies and work processes.

We take a collaborative approach on every project, becoming embedded in our clients’ business and corporate cultures.

Drawing from our considerable experience, we translate industry trends, introduce innovative ideas, and tailor solutions to each client.

At the beginning of the design process communication with our clients is critical and may include interviews, meetings, and on-line employee surveys.

Financial goals, brand, planning standards, operational enhancements, technology guidelines, expansion and contraction, amenities and accessibility must all be clearly defined before design can even begin.

The workscape is the next experience economy venue. The culturally optimized plus2K workplace will foster the creativity of knowledge workers, aid in the recruitment from today’s sellers market of creative thinkers, and enhance the retention of invested knowledge and intellectual capital by impacting employee satisfaction.

We have come to realize that the workplace is now a sales tool. But not just the ‘customer presentation center’ of yesterday.

The entire facility will now be a strategized and scripted experience used to position positive messages in the minds of employees, customers, partners and community.

The type of WOW! messages that will differentiate your enterprise from your competitors.

For AOL Canada’s Toronto office, HOK created an environment that promotes collaboration between the 90 employees working there. With its exposed brick walls and ceiling beams, the two-floor, 15,000sf space reflect AOL’s edgy, youthful, innovative and socially engaged culture. Individual workstations line the perimeter of the space, while meeting spaces of various sizes accommodate group work, and casual spaces including a café/lounge/entertainment space invite staff to mingle.

RSA wanted their new environment to reflect the innovation, collaboration and client-focused approach that they bring to the insurance business. The new 110,000sf space features universally accessible daylight, cafés, lounges and areas for professional meetings, complete with a wide range of gathering spaces. HOK created a workspace that embraces RSA’s past and future, utilizing a fresh look, while preserving the firm’s brand and displaying its much-valued artifacts.

Inspired by WPP’S local neighborhoods, a plethora of stimuli such as Galleries, Libraries, Cafes, Parks and Home, were created to make up the oasis of alternative workspaces. HOK provided each office with a sense of community. Canadian projects for WPP include Hill+Knowlton in Toronto, Edmonton and Calgary; Blast Radius in Toronto and Vancouver; and MediaCom, Y&R / Wunderman, MindShare and MEC, all in Toronto.

The 17,000-square-foot space reflects the client’s love for minimalist architecture and old world charm by juxtaposing clean lines with classical elements. The design thrilled the client so much that Alliance intends on utilizing the design in other international offices.

EMI Music Canada engaged HOK to assist with moving their organization from the suburbs to a downtown Toronto location. The music industry has undergone significant negative changes in the last 10 years and the organization needed to maximize the utilization of their space. They decided to see this as an opportunity for a fresh start that would revitalize the business.

Our 20,000 sq. ft. LEED- CI Gold certification, enhances the function of the HOK Toronto practice. The overall scheme of the open plan studio - a fifth floor renovation - is white in colour and bright in effect. The clear open layout - glass enclosed offices are assigned according to the need for privacy, not by hierarchy - is washed by even north light from the windows which ring the building’s perimeter. Glass walls, translucent and transparent, allow light into meeting rooms and the few offices at the building’s core.

As part of its ongoing work with the TD Bank, HOK undertook a series of studies to determine if alternative flexworkplace strategies could provide improved work efficiency and a measurable return on investment in terms of real estate savings. HOK is now developing a final standard design that will be adaptable for either FlexWorkSpace or Corporate Standard/Non-Flex WorkSpace businesses within the TD Bank Financial Group.

MindShare wanted to visually communicate its creative approach to business and the important symbiotic relationship between clients and employees. Working within the constraints of a limited schedule and budget, HOK and MindShare worked together to implement a design where the architecture and fixtures provide a backdrop for images illustrating MindShare’s expanding portfolio, employee contributions and brand.

Unlike its neighbour, the sleekly designed TIFF Building, the Cinema Tower Condominium is designed as a “rough cut,” and this 5,000 sf Presentation Centre clearly communicates that unique concept. Its “behind the scenes” unfinished feel honours the art of film-making versus the celebrity stardom and pays homage to the nearby Queen West culture.

We embrace our opportunity and unique responsibility as one of the world’s most influential design firms to advance sustainable design awareness, proficiency and innovation for every building type, geographic region and budget level.

By developing solutions to enhance aesthetic goals while limiting resource consumption, improving building performance and promoting occupant health and productivity, HOK is leading the way to an increasingly sustainable future.

U N M AT C H E D E X P E R T I S E

In the early ‘90s, HOK chose to build sustainable design into all practice areas, service offerings and regional offices rather than creating a separate specialty group. Our commitment emanates from every level of the organization—from Chairman Bill Valentine, to Sustainable Design Principal Bill Odell, to a network of “Champions” in each regional office and practice area.

More than 900 HOK employees have become LEED-accredited through the U.S. Green Building Council. All employees have access to a database of best practices, green materials, case studies and progressive industry resources.

Long before the creation of the LEED green building rating system, HOK developed sustainability checklists by phase and topic. These resources served as the foundation for The HOK Guidebook for Sustainable Design, widely recognized as one of the design profession’s seminal textbooks.

TA N G I B L E R E S U LT S

HOK has convincingly demonstrated that “green” projects can be delivered without compromising aesthetic goals, building performance or budget constraints.

Our built projects include office buildings, laboratories, corporate campuses, courthouses, museums, schools and master-planned communities throughout the world. HOK currently has 100 LEED certified projects, 10 BREEAM rated projects and more than 295 projects actively pursuing certification.

L E A D I N G BY E X A M P L E

In our daily operations and professional practices, HOK leads by example:

• In 2002, HOK adopted a firmwide policy that all subsequent company office relocations and renovations were to be built to LEED-CI certification standards.

• Eleven HOK offices, including Toronto have since been certified. The Toronto, Atlanta, London, Hong Kong and Beijing offices have achieved a LEED-CI Gold rating. Our Chicago office as earned the LEED-CI Platinum rating.

• To celebrate Earth Day 2006, HOK purchased renewable energy credits from wind farms to offset 100% of the annual electricity used in its offices worldwide—the single-largest commitment to wind energy by an architectural firm.

• HOK people serve as leaders and active participants in green industry events and associations, and are actively involved in local environmental and community organizations.
