Land Use Planning Made Plain is a practical guide for planners, administrators,

politicians, developers, property owners, and the general public on how to make

and implement land use decisions. It seeks to develop a set of coherent planning

principles by drawing out useful and generally applicable elements from various

systems and approaches.

Hok-Lin Leung's focus is on planning at the city level, and he has organized the text

according to the logical sequence of plan-making: justifications for making a land

use plan, a plan for plan-making, planning goals, information, analysis, synthesis,

and implementation. He addresses major debates in land planning today, including

controversial material, and concludes with suggestions on the qualifications and

qualities of a land use planner. By encouraging a shared understanding of the

purpose, analytic skills and substantive considerations of plan-making as well as

the ways and means of plan-implementation. This book helps the planner to

become more responsible and responsive to the many issues surrounding land use

and its important role in addressing human needs.

In 1919, the Town Planning Institute of Canada (TPIC) brought together the

founders of a new discipline committed to improving cities and those who live in

them. TPIC's Journal, and its successor, Plan Canada, provide a wealth of

knowledge about Canadian planning. These journals have served as the voice for

Canadian urban planning theory, history, and practice; Plan Canada, as the journal

of record of Canadian planning research and practice, continues to inform

international discourse about the profession.A Reader in Canadian Planning:

Linking Theory and Practice is a selection of some of the most important and

provocative articles from Plan Canada from the last 30 years.Articles included in

the Reader highlight the accomplishments and contribution of Canadian planning

theory and practice. It is suitable as a text for courses in Canadian community

planning theory and practice, and for those preparing for the Canadian Institute of

Planner's entrance examination. Jill Grant's introduction and commentaries develop

a theoretical and historical framework to set a context for the papers and the issues

they raise.

1995 “Land-Use Planning", in R. Paehlke (ed.) Conservation and Environmentalism: An Encyclopedia, New York: Garland Publishing, pp. 392-394.

Focusing on both problems and solutions, this authoritative

reference work covers all aspects of the environment, from the Everglades

to the Himalayas, from legislation in Australia to pollution problems in Eastern

Europe, from tropical rain forests to the Porcupine Caribou herd of the

Alaskan and Canadian Arctic. The Encyclopedia is filled with valuable

information, encompassing studies of species (butterflies, bats, elephants,

dolphins), conservation efforts, environmental organizations, treaties, toxic-

chemical hazards, resource conservation, conservation concepts

(biodiversity, landscape ecology) energy-use impacts, and other vital

subjects. The coverage reflects environmental concerns that have dominated

front-page headlines for the past four decades: from the Exxon Valdez to

Bhopal and Chernobyl, from air pollution to Love Canal, from whale and

dolphin preservation to rhino poaching.
