Rome Some Useful information

When to apply – Please apply no later than April 1, 2010, as space is limited. Please note that it takes time to obtain a student visa as well as a passport.

Why is this program at John Cabot University? Students benefit from exploring abroad with fellow Hofstra students and a Hofstra faculty member while taking a required accounting course. In addition, students enroll in a second course (taught in English) at John Cabot University; students can select from a broader range of courses and engage with students and faculty from different countries. Students may use John Cabot’s library, computer facilities and other services.

What about housing? – Students gain an understanding of Italian daily life by sharing an apartment in a residential neighborhood in Rome with one or more fellow students.

What about food? – The program fee does not include meals; however, interested students can contact John Cabot University about enrolling in the summer meal program, which includes four lunches and four breakfasts each week.

Legal matters – To study in Italy, students need a valid passport, a student visa, and health insurance coverage. Further details on these matters will be provided to accepted students.

Students will study, experience all that Rome has to offer, gather for weekly communal dinners, and enjoy activities with other Hofstra and JCU students. In the past, activities have included tours of Tivoli, opera night, walking tours, and more.

Program Costs

The estimated total program cost is $9,000, which includes tuition for one three-credit Hofstra University course (ACCT 123), John Cabot tuition for one three-credit course, hous-ing accommodations for five weeks, round-trip airfare, and some activities. Please note that meals are not included.

About the Program

The Hofstra Accounting in Rome Program provides the opportunity for students to experience living and learning in Rome, Italy for five weeks. During Summer Session I, a group of up to 20 Hofstra students can earn six (6) credits (two courses) at John Cabot University in Rome. Students will live in apartments in a residential neighborhood in Rome. A Hofstra professor will teach ACCT 123, Financial Accounting Theory and Practice I. Students also select a second course of their choice from John Cabot University’s course catalog, and will experience the course with students from other schools and countries. The program fee includes round-trip airfare from JFK to Rome and housing accommodations.

Academic RequirementsStudents need not be accounting majors. Students must have a cumulative GPA through fall 2009 of 2.67 or higher. ACCT 123 has prerequisites of IT 14 and ACCT 102, so students must expect to have completed these courses by the end of the spring 2010 semester. Students must have also attained junior class standing as of spring 2010 (i.e., students must have completed at least 58 credits). Students must select the John Cabot University course under advisement, to ensure it is eligible for Hofstra transfer credit.
