Integrates Science School-Based Assessment
Principles of SBA design:
 integrate assessment with teaching
and learning
 align with curriculum aims by
addressing curriculum emphases and
learning targets
 feedback for better learning and
teaching

SBA Requirements
Practical related tasks
Area A
Manipulative skills
Skills in making and recording observations
Over performance
Area B
Planning and design of experiments
Interpretation of data
Presentation of experimental findings
Drawing relevant conclusions
Non-Practical related tasks (applicable for 2014 & after)
Assignments
5
Assessment of Area A
The procedure for practical work is carried out safely.
Work is done in an organized, logical and efficient way.
Apparatus is handled competently.
Instruments are used in appropriate ways to make accurate readings and measurements.
Observations and/or data are recorded
appropriately.
Positive attitude towards scientific investigation is evident.
6
Assessment of Area B
Quality of the written accounts on devising a plan for an investigation and/or on the procedures and techniques of an experiment
Quality of the recording and presentation of results
Quality of the interpretation of the results and that of the conclusion

Switching of courses
Switching is allowed for students who have followed a science course (Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Combined Science) up to S5. (Schools have to provide evidence.)
Assessment in S6 only, ignore marks obtained previously.
Same assessment requirements as repeaters & transfer candidates.
11
Private candidates
Candidates who have sit science subjects in HKCEE, HKALE or HKDSE
SBA not applicable
12
Sample SBA tasks
At least one task will be prepared for each module
Each sample task includes: students’handout, teachers’ notes and suggested assessment criteria
Most tasks would be available in June 2009

How can schools plan for SBA Implementation
Conduct SBA as an integral part of teaching and learning and not treat it as an “add-on”
Set up school’s own assessment plan, specify the no of assessment activities to be conducted for individual subjects Coordinate the conduct of the SBA across subjects so that students’ work will not be concentrated into one or two critical monthsIncorporate SBA as a part of schools’ internal assessment program and replace some of the current assessment activities, e.g. assignments, tests etc
