You all are gonna love this one. Most people are okay and this couple

shows what being compassionate really means.

It’s been slightly more than seven years since HixNews went live on our new website. The first website issue ap-

peared in April of 2005. Thanks to contributions from alumni, the newsletter expenses have been covered during

this time period.

The treasury has dwindled but continues to maintain after all these years. There were expenses in the beginning

that are no longer valid. Our only expenses now are the monthly Earthlink fee of $19.95 and an annual domain

fee of $20.00. We had a little scare recently when Earthlink advised that we were approaching the maximum

bandwidth allowable on a monthly basis. Going beyond the maximum means it’s going to be more costly.

Roger did some shuffling and was able to minimize the problem lurking on the horizon.

We are in good stead right now. If the need to ask for contributions becomes a reality, we will certainly contact

our expanding readership.

Thanks.

Warmest Regards

Buffalo Bob Casale

There is an old rumor going around that the Ma-

rines are part of the Navy. It's true... the MEN

DEPARTMENT.

Hey Guys & Gal

I was just reading the August News Letter and it was stated that August 3 is Coast Guard Day. It is actually

August 4. Originally called the Revenue Marine founded on August 4, 1790.

Sincerely

Chris Wilkenshoff 1974

USCG Retired

You’re right and my apologies, Chris! I pulled up a random

“holidays of August” webpage and went with that information. After

going to Wikipedia (the absolute and guaranteed source of all

knowledge), I confirmed that Coast Guard Day is August 4 of each

year. Thank you Chris for the correction and your proud service!

Going through the August HixNews and "The Class of 1943 Year Book" I noticed that Ray Rusch was a

graduate. Mr. Rusch later became a teacher and I had him for 3 years. He eventually became principal at the

High School. We were sadly informed via, HixNews, that he passed away in 2003. My question is: why is

he not listed in the "In Memoriam" section under "1943?"

The oversight will be corrected. Thanks for the “Good

Lookin’ Out.”

Bob:

I’m not sure if you’re doing anything with the pictures of all 1973 graduates, but I would like to make

you aware of the following. I am a graduate of HHS 1973 and that year they messed up 4 people in the

year book, I am one of them! Under my picture is Diana Pascola's name and my name is under her pic-

ture. I believe they made the error with Paul Parson and another guy with long hair, can't recall his name.

All the best,

Editor Note:

The sad thing is I don't have access to a 1973 yearbook. I have per-

sonally 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 and 1966.

I can access the following at classmates 1959 1967 1968 1969 1972

1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979.

I wish I had all the yearbooks because everyone loves pictures and the

old ones are premier.

Thanks to Kathy Hannaman for submitting the following…

So you are in Sabadell, near Barcelona, Spain, & You decide to go out and have a nice, late afternoon stroll

around the town square with the rest of the folks.

All of a sudden this guy in a top hat and formal tux comes out with a large Bass Violin and starts playing the fi-

nal movement of Beethoven's 9th symphony. Well, that's kinda' neat.

So, you hang around to watch for a few moments. A crowd begins to gather in curiosity, enjoying the guy play.

What happens next will blow your mind.

Way cool ! GOOD STUFF !

Hello Bob, great layout. The pics and the older ones give a great visual story. If Schwartz's furniture store is

still there , the Rheinhardt Hotel was the back part of it, on the corner of E.Cherry St.. Goldman's store is on

the corner of E Carl St. If you look at the empty lot next to Dwyer's bar, that was the old location of Black-

man Hicksville Plumbing Supply. Their yard opened to Cherry St. between the back of Dwyer's and the next

house. They moved to Hazel Street in 1959 after the fire at their old location. Thank you again, a great job.

Mike Dolan

Hello Bob,

Looking again at your layout in the August issue, I shorted you a picture that should have been included with

the initial batch. This one is after the one that shows Scheiners drugstore looking North the rest of the way to

Nicholai St. As Olga's ladies foundation store has provided “tremendous support’ to the female population of

Hicksville and the ladies from surrounding communities, I feel badly about omitting her store. Please place the

picture in your file in case you use them in the future.

Done and just to insure continuity, the lost shot is shown below…

Here’s a picture that was tak-

en in 1948 in front of what

was Blackman Plumbing

Supply. To the best of my

knowledge, the empty lot

next to Olga’s was where

Blackman was before the

fire….

Well, here’s a picture that was taken in front of Blackman in

May of 1948…who are these two cuties??? Olga’s Specialty

shop is in background…one of the two graduated with the

class of 1964!!!

Also, check out the parade up Broadway the end of May

Bob and HixNews editors…great job this month on the newsletter. I really enjoyed the old pictures of

Hicksville. Very sad. The destruction at was the year we graduated from Hicksville High. Two great

things came to an end. Didn't realize it at the time. Lorraine and I went to a 1950's exhibit at the

L.I.Museum in Stony Brook. The exhibit was mostly about Levittown but there were two Hicksville

items there. One was a qoute from Billy Joel about growing up in Hicksville and the other was in a Long

Island yearbook display. They had about ten pictures of women on the wall in two rows. You had to

match the woman in the top row, current picture, with their high school picture in the bottom row. Gail

Fallon, class of 1955, was one of the women in the display. Great exhibit. Not very big though.

I'll talk to you soon.

Attached is a newspaper article of Mr. Leon Galloway, HHS teacher, JHS principal and I think HHS principal. I

don't have a date for it but I think somewhere around the mid to late 1930's.

Steve Moddle 1953.

I scanned the document and the text of the newspaper article

was tough to read, so I typed the text. Then found a picture of

Mr. Galloway circa 1961 sitting at his desk when he was Prin-

cipal. Mr. Galloway aged well and was one helluva man.

Mr. Galloway, head of the commercial department of Hicksville High School, is a collector of old confederate

paper money. He came to Hicksville during the well-known year of depression, 1929, and has remained in that

community since then. Born in Kentucky, he was educated at Syracuse University. Mr. Galloway also holds a

degree from Columbia University. He is 35 years of age and single.

Dear HixNews

I really enjoy reading your monthly newsletter and would appreciate a correction be made on my behalf.

You have me listed as living in MA, when in fact I live in Napa Valley, California, and have for the past

40 years. Also, our anniversary was omitted from July's listing. Would appreciate correction shown be-

low.

Thanks for all the hard work from you and your staff and keep up the great work.

ville. Please contact so we can possibly work together.

Ray Gamble, 1971

Editor Note:

Write up a blurb that you are organizing a multi year

reunion that will be held on June 29th 2013 at a place

to be determined.

What classes are you including???

Is it a multi year reunion???

Will entertainment be included?

What kind?

Where is the venue to be held???

What are the costs?

There are many intangibles at the moment.

Get some facts, some figures, some solid answers,

then we can see what kind of response evolves.

Hi Buffalo Bob:

As a retired secretary from Hicksville High School, I'd like to offer this advice to anyone looking

to connect up with a high school reunion. Many times when a reunion is in the planning stages,

the high school is informed either by a professional company who is organizing the reunion or

by the organizers themselves. My suggestion is to contact the guidance office at HHS or the

main office to see if they have any info available. If they don't, wait a few months and check

again

Peggy Moldovak Gill Class of 1967 Peggy

Received a note (see below) from Joe Carfora from class of 1962. Their

reunion is in October and Joe asked for a phone number or email ad-

dress so he can add his class reunion at the school.

Thanks so much.

buffalo bob casale

Hi Bob,

I circulated the note from Peggy Moldovak Gill ’67, in the last issue of HixNews, to our reunion committee. We

would like to take her up on the suggestion of informing Hicksville High, either through the guidance office or

the main office, of our reunion on October 6th of this year. Do you have an email address for an appropriate per-

son we can send our website link to? If so, if you can pass the email address on to me, I’ll email that person and

provide them with our website link to use in passing reunion information on to anyone who might inquire at the

high school. Please let me know.

Thanks

Joe Carfora

Hi Bob and Joe:

I have some info for you in contacting the Guidance Office at HHS...The phone # is 516-733-

2220..Anyone of the secretaries there will be able to help you. The office is normally open 7:30-

3:30 M-F..Right now they are on summer hours which end at 2:30..

Unfortunately, anything you wish to have posted on a bulletin board would have to be faxed or

sent by snail mail. Hicksville offers no internet access to most of it's employees (I believe the

only ones with such privilege are administrators).

The mailing address is Guidance Department, 180 Division Avenue, Hicksville, NY 11801-

4899..

Good luck

Peggy

I have been away from my Newsletter for both June and July...long story, however, today, I got to see them

both and enjoy them immensely. It rekindles memories of my years growing up in Hicksville and how I

missed it when my family moved away to NJ in 1963.

I see that you, Bob, have made what sounds to be a really wonderful CD. I hope you still have one available

that you could send to me. Let me know the cost and I will send it to cover costs and mailing.

I thought you were a subscriber to the newsletter in the past. Your brother, Jeff, and I were good friends

Another good friend was Chris Polanski who is living now in North Carolina. I heard about your brother

passing through the grapevine but have no information surrounding his death.

It's good to have you aboard.

Bob, I was a subscriber, but just recently changed my e-mail address. My brother Jeff died on 03/30/1990.

He had developed a non-malignant brain tumor that kept growing and they were not able to operate. He was

living in Saugatuck, Michigan at the time. After high school he attended Hope College in Holland, MI and

stayed in Michigan for awhile. He then lived in California, Florida and then back to Michigan. He was mar-

ried and had 2 children. His son is a lawyer in Charleston, SC and his daughter lives in Michigan as does his

wife. I'm currently living in Annapolis, Maryland with my wife who was from Levittown. We are getting

ready to celebrate our 50th. Time flys. I have enjoyed the newsletter and read it every month.

know if there is any talk about 50th reunion for the class of 1963?

Buffalo Bob Casale

Robert

May I ask why you are requesting Debbie's picture?

Regards,

Pat Wagner Kerwin 1973

Pat

HixNews sent a birthday card and Debbie acknowledged receipt.

We like to add pictures with the thank yous to the newsletter.

And that's the reason for requesting her picture.

Remember, life is like a box of chocolates.

Thanks buffalo bob casale

Hey Bob,

Just wondering why you wanted my picture? I have a yearbook but I'm curious as to why you want the

picture. Thanks.

Debbie Fischer Dowdell Debbie

We sent a birthday card that you acknowledged receiving.

The editors like to add a picture to the thank you to help generate

more interest in the newsletter. You know what they say...one

picture is worth a thousand words. Several of your classmates

sent me scans and one will be included in the next issue.

Thanks for asking.

While attending either Junior High or HHS I had a teacher named

Gertrude Wetterauer who taught History and Social Studies. She

once told the class that she wrote historical novels using a pseudo-

nym. Does anyone know either the title of a novel that she wrote or

the name that she used?--

Thanks to Kathy McDonald Corey for this cooking tip!

This is really great, I am going to try it the next time I want mashed potatoes or potato salad! If you take the time

to watch this, you will not only be glad you did, but you will forward this to all your friends and relatives, any

cook. Just when you thought you knew everything about boiling potatoes.

To all who love making potato salad but hate peeling the boiled potatoes, here is the solution for easy peeling.

his will BLOW your mind. Well, we do learn something new every day.

I wish I had known about this thirty years ago. Peeling the cooked potato was the least desirable part in making a

potato salad. Enjoy. It works

Hi HixNews:

I am doing a story on the Double Dates, a vocal group from 1959 that included Tom Doherty. I believe he

graduated in 1960 and looking for his graduation picture. Would you be able to help or forward this to some-

one who might? Thank you very much,

Al Leichter

Sure

See attached.

Tom's graduation picture and one of the roster of West Village Green back in 1957. I don't believe Tom par-

ticipated in school activities. Seems to be he was one of those Greasers from back in the day, maybe in one of

the car groups.

Are you doing other groups?

Six students from the Brooklyn Bridge graduated from Hicksville High and John and Jim Cunningham (The

Twin Tones) had their single Joanne climb the music charts back in the fifties.

If I can be of further assistance, give me a shout.

Sincerely

Buffalo Bob Casale

Buffalo Bob:

Thank you so much. That is fantastic. One of the Double Dates lives here (Staunton, VA) so I did an inter-

view with her and with the group leader Ben Savage (via e-mail) and will do a story. I try to talk with anyone

I run across locally. Again, thanks so much for your help. I'll be sure to credit you. Thanks also for the pic-

tures of the Twin Tones with Alan Freed & the Brooklyn Bridge. Just great,

Al

Yes, alive and doing okay (for people our age). Our age is not providing limits to performance, it's providing

limits to functioning.

Actually, I get up every morning and watch the sun come up and marvel at the fact that I can appreciate that

while others cannot.

Tom and his bride, the former Virginia Kolenik, are living in Amityville on Long Island.

You can give him a shout at (email concealed)

Any problems, please let me know.

Thanks bob

Hi Bob:

Do you know of Tom is still alive, where he's living and/or contact information? Thanks

Al

Hi everyone,

First off, I want to than ALL of you for all the hard work that you put into the Hicksville Newsletter. I can't

wait to open my email on the first of each month. thank you, thank you thank you!

In the last newsletter, I was on the casales corner where you had pictures that we had to figure out what it was.

Well, the pictures never appeared, only the answers. Did anyone else have this problem??

Donna Schrimpe 1966

Donna

Working on that little problem. Will let you know when it's resolved.

Thanks

Hmmmm, the pictures show up in Firefox, but not that danged

Internet Explorer browser. Some seem to be out of place, too.

Will dig into it.

Roger

How about I change it to Adobe? Or switch the original document by

eliminating the page break. I just figured out how to do that.

I'm learning about the Windows 7 layout that is very new to me.

Roger

I've attached a PDF file of the same thing.

That's a lot better. Now everybody sees the same thing.
