HISTORY OF BASTARD SWORD / HAND AND HALF SWORD
FACT : BASTARD SWORD The medieval bastard sword in later times was
known as hand and half sword. Bastard sword generally had long handle which
allowed two handed use. It is popular due to its extreme reach, cutting and
thrusting abilities.
ORIGIN : BASTARD SWORD The term bastard sword originates from the French
‘epee batarde’. This term was used to refer to hand and half sword
or long sword. The versatility of the design prevented the sword
from being specifically in any category of one handed or two handed swords.
DESCRIPTION: BASTARD SWORD The medieval bastard sword had a two edged blade
and a handle long enough to hold it with two hands. The length of bastard sword ranges from 40-48
inches. Bastard sword handle is of 10-15 inches. The bastard sword weighted between 5-8 pounds. This is used as a close contact weapon with massive
strike power.
