gain resources, agricultural products, human population, and crush Soviet Communist regime

• Army Group Centre sent to advance Smolensk

• Army Group South sent to seize Ukraine, southern Russia, ultimately oil fields in Russia

• Germany underestimated strength and production, Red Army resistance, and geographical obstacles

• Germany’s wants were unreal due to underestimation

• Germany’s offensive stalled at first in Russia’s Autumn Rains, stopped within sight of Kremlin by Russia’s winter and Soviet counter attacks

British had at Kai Tak Airport

Fall of Hong Kong Continued• December 10- Japanese advance 15 miles

into Hong Kong• December 12- oil tanks and dockyards of

Kowloon are destroyed• Hong Kong left with lack of air and naval

defense• December 13- last of Commonwealth

retreats to mainland• December 18- Japanese cross harbour• December 20- island split in half between

forces• December 25- surrender to the Japanese• Final day known as “Black Christmas”
