FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR, FR. THOMAS KOYS, M.A.,S.T.L.

We’ve all heard the old saying, “Don’t try this at home, we’re professionals”. It is said often on shows like Myth Busters. There was a show that tried to deter-mine if it is really possible to dodge a bullet. A man with a bullet proof vest attempted to dodge a bullet fired at him from various distances. I was not even tempted to try THAT one at home. Conclusion of the experiment: No. The man could not dodge the bullet. I bring this to your atten-tion because a strange phenomenon is occurring in the news these days. It reminds me of this old saying because it shows that what some “amateurs” are trying to do, is better left to profes-sionals. You may have caught wind of a little de-bate going on about the President’s collusion with Russia. Who said what? When did who know about what was said? Who told who? Who leaked infor-mation to whom with or without official authorization? And on and on. What does this latest frenzy have to do with the old saying? Well, it seems that the people who are most upset with the fact that Russia may have had some influence in our election are the same people who have been promoting and praising the belief in a world without borders.. I’m old enough to remember the old Beatle’s song, Imagine.. You remember it, don’t you? “Imagine there’s no countries. It isn’t hard to do. Noth-ing to kill or die for, and no religion too. Imagine all the people living life in peace”.

If the people who consider themselves more “progressive” have been singing the blessings of a uni-versal family of mankind, and an understanding of hu-man nature that is open to people of different cultures and different ways of thinking are all of the sudden, an-gry that some of our fellowmen are sticking their noses into our American business, they need to explain to the rest of us why they are so upset that Russia may have had some influence in our elections. By all rights, if the spirit of the Beatles is true wisdom, shouldn’t they be happy that people from a different culture, who think differently than we do helped contribute to the election of our President? Even if it is discovered that Russia had candidate Trump on speed dial and talked with him eve-

ry week, wouldn’t that be a reason to rejoice, not con-demn?. If such progressive thinkers are sincere about the global family and the importance of accepting peo-ple who think differently than themselves, why is there a scandal in all this “collusion” stuff? I don’t get it.

Actually, I do understand something. The idea of ac-cepting people who think differently than they do is on-

ly acceptable for them when those people actual-ly think the way they think. This present contra-diction found in the minds of people who embrace the Beatle’s wisdom about no countries while con-demning the President for talking with people of an-other country is actually, not as dumb as it appears. Actually, it can be seen as a good example of what G.K. Chesterton calls one

of the paradoxes of Christianity. When you think about it, the Bible teaches us that when God created the Gar-den of Eden, there were no countries. There were no presidents. Come to think about it, there weren’t even any cloths stores either. But recreating the Garden the Eden and healing the dysfunctional global community of mankind is really hard work. Secularists and believ-ers alike have been working at it for thousands of years. The progressives who think they can do it without God are in way over their heads. This kind of project is best left to religious professionals who hold universal truths in high esteem. Did you know that the word Catholic actually means “universal”?

FATIMA: 100 YEARS LATER MARY & PRAYER

There are many things to learn from our Blessed Mother. And she certainly was a woman of prayer. She cried out to God in many times of need. And I’m sure she must have prayed for others too. And what better gift to give to others than the gift of prayer?

Why not be that person, that person who prays for others without them even knowing? After all, we’re put here to help others to Heaven. And the chanc-es that others are going through something are pretty good.

Why not take time to reflect on our Heavenly moth-er, and how she prayed and what she prayed? Why not mean it when others ask for prayer and we say we will pray for them, because really, that phrase is used too vaguely. God is up there want-ing to hear from us. Why not talk to Him?

POPE FRANCIS BLESSES HOMES IN UNEXPECTED VISIT

The Holy Father startled residents of Ostia, who had been expecting a parish priest.

As parish priests throughout Italy do during the Easter season, Pope Francis has spent an after-noon going door to door and blessing homes. Continuing the “Mercy Friday” visits he began dur-ing the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis chose a pub-lic housing complex in Ostia, a Rome suburb on the Mediterranean Sea. The Vatican press office said that Fr. Plinio Poncina, pastor of Stella Maris parish, put up signs announcing that a priest would be visiting the neighborhood to bless hous-es. The signs, which indicate a date and give a time frame, are a common sight in Italy in the weeks before and after Easter. “It was a great sur-prise today when, instead of the pastor, the one ringing the door bells was Pope Francis,” the press office said. “With great simplicity, he inter-acted with the families, he blessed a dozen apart-ments” and left rosaries for the residents. “Joking, he apologized for disturbing people. However, he reassured them that he had respected the hour of silence for a nap after lunch in accordance with the sign posted at the entrance to the building,” the press office said.

The Pope’s Friday visits to hospitals and hospic-es, homes for children, rehab centers and other places of care were planned for the Year of Mercy as tangible ways for the Pope to practice the cor-poral and spiritual works of mercy. Although the Year of Mercy ended in November, the Pope re-started making Mercy Friday visits in March when he visited a home and educational center for the blind and visually impaired.

My name is Becky Granat. I am a parishioner at St. James, as well as a spiritual director.

What is a spiritual direction? It involves meet-ing with me for approximately one hour a

month at St. James to discover where God is working with you or leading you in your life. If this seems of interest to you, please call me at

630.257.5487 for further details. THANK YOU.
