We thanked Ed- win Tankins and Bob Reuter for many years of their valuable service as they were completing their Board directorship. There were over fifty in attendance for this an- nual Officers Installation Luncheon. At the Military Veterans Coalition meeting on January 11, 2017, Com- mander Warren from the American Legion Post 185 from Bluffton joined us to consider a joint Coalition with the present Hilton Head Ar- ea MOAA, the Navy League and the Ameri- can Legion Post 49. At our next meeting, Com- mander Warren will re- turn with his member- ships interests. Effec- tive January 2017, Mike Danoff has been ap- pointed to serve the Co- alition as its President. The three Rsin our Chapter in recent time has been Retention, Rectruit and Renew- al”. MOAA Spouses for Service Jayne Danoff

January 11, 2017, 17 members met for lunch at Jane Bistro and Bar. We decided that it was time to reorganize the purpose and struc-ture of our luncheon meetings.

January 19, 2017, many spouses were in attendance as MSforS members Holly Bosworth was in-stalled as the chapter’s first Website Director and Lois Heitzke was in-stalled to serve as the Surviving Spouse Liaison to the Hilton Head Chapter of MOAA. Congratulations to Lois and Holly, thank you for all that you do for our chapter.

January 19, 2017, a worker bee meeting was held in the Vault at Starbucks, Pineland Station. The 3 agenda items for the month were: Contact surviving spouse on the MOAA membership roster; Plan the New Member Dinner on February 12, and; Pre-plan the events of the World’s Largest Yard Sale on March 25, 2017.

February 8, 2017, MSforS will meet at Santa Fe Cafe for a lunch only meeting.

Changes: The second Wednesday each

month, MSforS will continue its monthly meeting at a venue established by Barb Holben, a social get togeth-er.

A second meeting will be con-ducted each month com-prised of the MSforS offic-ers and the Worker Bees. This will be a business only meeting comprising three item agenda for the board and worker bees. An email will define the agenda items. No RSVPs come if you can and want to help.

January 31, the New member potluck was postponed.

On the Horizon:

Sunday, February 26, 2017, New Member Dinner Mary Lou Fehrman has graciously offered to host this potluck event.

We have 31 new members on our roster, and face space constraints. The event must be limited to new members, the chapter’s board of directors, and the MSforS worker bees.

March 8, 2017, 12:00PM, MSforS luncheon, at the British Pub restau-rant, 1000 William Hilton Parkway, in the Wexford Shops.

Thursday, March 16, 2017, The MOAA General Membership Luncheon Dick Dubiel will share his role as the second person called as an Emergency Responder on March 28, 1979 when the Three Mile Is-land Nuclear Plant suffered a melt-down. An evite will be extended to MOAA national members in the area who are not chapter mem-bers.

Saturday, March 25, 2017, The World’s Largest Yard Sale The largest event of the year to support the JROTC Scholarship fund. MOAA members offer used golf balls and golf paraphernalia. MSforS will offer household items and sport equipment for kids of all ages to support our charitable pro-jects in 2017. Please donate your unappreciated treasures for the cause. Preparation: Prior to March 19, 2017, MSforS will be available to pick up dona-tions. Thursday, March16, 2017, accept donations at CCHH, following gen-eral meeting. Monday, March 20, 2017, drop off items at the Danoff’s all day, 17 Club Manor, Palmetto Hall, please call or email for a gate pass: [email protected] or 617.861.7010. Wednesday, March 22, 2017, 10:00AM a day of pricing and sort-ing followed by dinner at the Da-noff’s, a thank you for working to make the event a success.

Friday, April 28, 2017, Preview Day for the MCAS Beaufort Air Show and Blue Angels followed by dinner at the Dockside restau-rant in Beaufort. It is an upfront opportunity to see some amazing aircraft in action, and some very

talented pilots too.

Thursday, May 18,2017, The JROTC Scholarship Awards lunch-eon at CCHH. Please start saving your quarters to include in the MSforS college laundry gift bags.

June, plans continue for a catered dinner on the beach.

If you do not have a copy of your DD214 ( Your military discharge paper ) you should get a copy and let your spouse/relatives know where it is readily available to them. The address of the website where you can order yours is: http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/ Just go to that website and follow the directions on the site and they will mail you a copy of you DD214 within a couple weeks. Once you get it, I recommend you make several copies of it.

Legislative Update Jay Mullinax, Legislative Affairs Officer South Carolina’s House Bill 3147 exempting some military retirement pay from the state in-come tax was passed and signed into law by Governor Nikki Haley on June 7

272 exempts military pay as follows: Those < 65 yrs old: Deduction shall be $5,900 beginning the 2016 tax year, and shall increase

by $2,900 each year until the maximum deduction is allowed in 2020. 2016: $5,900 2017: $8,800 2018: $11,700 2019: $14,600 2020: $17,500

Those > 65 yrs old: Deduction shall be $18,000 beginning the 2016 tax year, and shall increase

by $3,000 each year until the maximum deduction is allowed in 2020. 2016: $18,000 2017: $21,000 2018: $24,000 2019: $27,000 2020: $30,000
