Chris Grant reports:

COMMODORE’S REPORT

Well we certainly had a festive start to the year at our legendary New Years Eve show. If the crowd on the dance floor is any guide it was a great party as members danced away 2013 and welcomed in 2014. Well done function staff – they’re already taking bookings for next year!

The sporting side of the Club is now in full swing and the individual section reports inside this edition will reflect the solid participation of our Angling, Diving and Power members. Mention should be made of those youth sailors who represented HYC so ably in National dinghy – Laser and Optimists (a boat not an attitude) - championships in Victoria over the holiday period. It’s great to see the enthusiasm, dedication and camaraderie of family groups as they travel the great distances with their young athletes to these events.

While on the topic of youth it was a privilege for me to officially open the Junior Clubhouse on the 1st February. These events allow us to reflect on what we are about at Hillarys Yacht Club – marine sports and activities with a particular emphasis on youth and family involvement. While we are proud of

our growth in youth sailing, the marine sports and activities we’re trying to foster in the Club are not solely about sailing. For this reason Management would like to see the new clubhouse used by all junior Club members.

Milestones such as a junior clubhouse don’t just happen. Indeed the spectacular growth the Club has enjoyed in its relatively short existence on this unique location hasn’t just happened! It’s taken the leadership of our respective Commodores and Flag Officers, the dedication of our Life Members - along with the support of our generous volunteers and all the members over the years. While I did the honours this time, it’s salutary to reflect that I, as the incumbent Commodore, stand on the tip of a large iceberg and the Junior Clubhouse is a tribute to all who have participated in the development and growth of our Club.

The Management side of the Club must go on in parallel with the sporting and social side of Club life. Your Management and Executive Committees continue with the routine, and not so routine, oversight of the business side of things. It’s been

good to see the bars and restaurants in the Club well patronised by our members and their guests. Get on down and enjoy the first class facilities and the unique 270 degree Indian Ocean panorama from the club house.

Driving into the club over Christmas/New Year is was strange to see the Boat lifters eerily empty. This is as it should be, but the boats are once again emerging from the water for the seemingly never ending business of repair and maintenance. Alas, it’s a sad irony that many of the early arrivals have been lifted for repairs resulting from mishaps on the reefs around Rotto and elsewhere over the holidays.

Finally, we should all be looking forward to the Club’s annual Rottnest weekend over 8th & 9th March. The HYC-Rottnest-Return keelboat race has now been completely absorbed into this whole of Club activity. It would be terrific to see Thompsons Bay full of HYC boats so get there – even if you have to paddle. Thanks to our generous Sponsors it’s fast becoming a weekend to remember.

At Webb & Brown-Neaves, we build homes as individual as you are.

Homes crafted so superbly, the resulting look and lifestyle is utterly

flawless. For the ultimate sense of self-contentment off the water, journey

through a display home this weekend. Call your local WBN repesentative,

Welcome to all the new members who have recently joined Hillarys Yacht Club

Being a member of HYCLast ‘Compass’ issue I wrote on what the Club has to offer, the affordability and benefits of being a member. The benefits of membership are many, and as the Club continues to grow and develop so to do those benefits and privileges increase with it.

It seems as time moves forward many members become less aware of the requirements and restrictions of membership and their responsibility to fellow members.

Listed below are the constitutional rights of ‘Full Ordinary Members’. Prior to the recent review of the Constitution, this membership category was titled ‘Family Membership’. The clauses are all but identical to those of ‘Family Membership’.

5.1 Ordinary Members: Members, over the age of eighteen years other than Associate Members, Corporate Members, Student Members, Country Members, Reciprocal Members, Honorary Members, Honorary Life Members, Junior Members, Crewing Members, Senior Citizen Members and Temporary Members, who are elected by the Management Committee and includes the spouse/partner and immediate family under the age of eighteen years.

5.1.1 Only one person of an ordinary membership over the age of eighteen years is eligible for election as a Flag Officer, Treasurer, Constitutional

Compliance Officer or Independent Executive Committee Member of the Club at any one time.

5.1.2 Ordinary members are entitled to participate in all activities of the Club and to utilise the Club amenities.

5.1.3 Only one vote may be cast for each ordinary membership at a General Meeting.

5.1.4 Only one person of an ordinary membership is subject to the Food and Beverage Levy at any one time.

5.1.5 Only one person of an ordinary membership is entitled to propose or second persons for membership or office at any one time.

I wish to bring Members’ attention to Clause 5.1, and specifically the last 14 words, ‘and includes the spouse/partner and immediate family under the age of eighteen years’.

It is quite clear, in that it includes the spouse or partner and children under the age of 18. Members’ children over the age of 18 are not included in this membership category and as such need to be signed in as guests of the member or take up membership in their own right.

The Constitution, By-Laws and Liquor Licensing Regulations are quite clear in this regard. Members can sign in (5) guests with the number of times the same guest can be signed in limited to (5).

GuestsAll allowed Members as specified in the Club Constitution shall have the privilege of introducing guests to the Club premises provided that:

1.4.1 No guest shall be allowed in the licensed premises of the Club whilst the bar is open unless his or her name has been recorded in the Visitors Book by the Member who has invited such guest or guests and such Member shall be responsible for the conduct and dress of such guest or guests.

1.4.2 No member shall invite more than five (5) guests to the Club on any one occasion without prior approval from the Commodore or General Manager.

1.4.3 A guest may not be supplied with liquor other than to be consumed on and in the Club’s premises.

1.4.4 The number of visits permitted to each guest shall be five (5) or as prescribed from time to time by the Management Committee.

On many occasions, members’ children over 18 are attending the Club, its grounds and facilities without being signed in or allowed by the rules of the Club.

Provision is made to allow children over 18 to join as Student Members through this transitional period to full membership at the end of their studies, without incurring the cost of the $1012

nomination fee, and annual membership of $506. Student Membership is available for $108 annually.

Our security officer, senior staff and myself regularly notice members’ children (non-member siblings), some over 30 years of age, attending the Club and have found it necessary to advise them of the regulations, sometimes requesting them to leave the premises.

On many occasions we also notice and find members are allowing their over age siblings to access and park vehicles in Club grounds on weekends and holiday periods by standing at the front gates and swiping access cards to allow their entry. This too, also occurs with members allowing visiting guest vehicles in, not just their siblings.

Not only is this an abuse of your membership rights, it shows a disregard for your fellow members who do adhere and support Club regulations.

We regularly see vehicles parked outside the gates awaiting members to arrive

then follow them in. We also see vehicles await members to leave through the exit gate and drive in on the opposite side, often dangerous when another member vehicle is leaving.

I am sure you have all seen this happening when you have arrived at the Club. It is your responsibility and to that of your fellow members these practices are not condoned but ceased.

As members you are entitled to police the rights of membership because you have paid for that right. We as staff and officers of the Club are happy for you to advise when you see these instances, as we can follow up immediately if we can, or review CCTV at the gates and around Club grounds to support your rights.

So please assist us in maintaining the standard and rights of your membership and take into account the above information, get your siblings to sign up for membership in their own right, do not abuse but support your membership. The Club can only get stronger if we all support the conditions of membership at

this fine Club of ours.

New Year’s Eve - Goodbye 2013, hello 2014!With well over 300 guests New Year’s Eve was a sell out!! What a great way to welcome in our new Commodore Chris Grant. The room was decked out with leopard print chair covers, with the red carpet full of glamour and also some creative costumes. The Renegades managed to keep the dance floor full from the very start through to the new year.

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie With Australia Day this year falling on the Sunday, members could take advantage of our Live Sunday Music followed by an Aussie style buffet. Crowd favourite Domenic Zurzolo entertained the many members and their families in what was a relaxing, warm summer afternoon.

Valentine’s DayWas another sell out with over 140 members and guests in the Harbour room enjoying a lovely three course meal and a glass of sparkling. The entertainment by Kelly Green and Brenton proving too hard to resist with the dance floor full for the majority of the night. Also with a full house in buffet down stairs the chefs put on a fantastic dessert buffet full of sweet treats including hot milk chocolate dipping sauce, chocolate spring rolls……Love was in the air at HYC.

After the various classes of dinghy had finished racing on Saturday morning February 1st, a crowd of over one hundred gathered for the official opening of the HYC Junior Clubhouse by Commodore Chris Grant with flag officers, parents, sailors and guests present. Captain of Dinghies Brett Bailey welcomed everyone and thanked those involved for bringing what was Vice Commodore Simon Davenport’s initial vision of a clubhouse to fruition.

Rear Commodore Sailing, Neil Harrison highlighted the growth of the Juniors section with 85 participating in the “Start Sailing Programs” in the holidays and the success of so many at the “Nationals” (see page 17). Neil thanked the General Manager Danny Rechichi and Brad West for the huge amount of work over the past few weeks to fit-out the clubhouse,

ably assisted by Brett and Linda Bailey, Chris Kelly, Roland Gee, Tony Sheehan and many volunteers.

The Commodore invited us to share the vision of HYC as a safe, family-oriented club dedicated to fostering the development of our youth through the provision of marine sports and activities: “this building should be seen as a testament to our commitment to our club goals”. He hoped that the Junior Clubhouse would be for all junior members, making it a mecca for club activities including the junior training and development and maybe even courses for the more senior members such as RST, Radio and First Aid. In closing the Commodore reiterated the thanks to management and support staff, particularly Danny

Rechichi, then cut the ribbon declaring the HYC Junior Clubhouse “open”.

Note: the Clubhouse has a TV, kitchen, bean bags, whiteboard, a huge pool table donated by Stephen O’Keeffe and will eventually have a toilet and shower.

Each Wednesday a group of up to 20 men collectively, and affectionately known as the “Fat Boys” assemble at HYC on their favourite treadlie to ride to Ocean Reef Marina along the cycle path.

The incentive to return against the usual strong sea-breeze using techniques gleaned from watching the Tour de France is the beers and camaraderie at the “Wet Bar” with mein host Ron.

The group has an annual run to Rotto on members’ boats where golf, cycling and re-hydrating are enjoyed.

Some have been overseas to ride in exotic countries like Vietnam and in the process raised funds for Breast Cancer research.

They leave 4pm every Wednesday rain, hail or shine from the “Wet Bar”.

October saw fi ve HYC Fatboys and a mutual friend travel to Thailand to participate in a 700km bike ride.

This ride was to raise funds for the research into prostate/breast cancer. I am pleased to advise over $3000.00 has been raised so far. The fi nal amount is not yet available but will be advised.

Many thanks to all HYC members and others who contributed. A special thanks goes to Vertech Group for their wonderful contribution.

A more detailed story of the bike ride and happenings will be provided at a later date.

Once again the HYC Fatboys thank you.

The Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group Inc. (WVSRG) has been in operation in the local area for more than 40 years, serving the local boating community by providing a 24 hour support base, assistance and educational facilities for the public in the Northern suburbs of Perth.

Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group is the largest and one of the busiest volunteer sea rescue groups in Western Australia, performing approximately 300 rescues each year.

The Lifting Service team have a long standing relationship with Whitfords Sea Rescue supporting them to allow them to be available to help those in need.

Christmas Eve, a peak summer period both Sea Resuce boats were out of action due to various issues. The Hillarys Yacht

Club Marine Lifting Services worked tirelessly to repair the vessels to get them

back out on the water.

The Hillarys Yacht Club Tuesday Group work relentlessly to help the club and others. In December of last year, the Tuesday Group generously presented the Wheelchairs for Kids Foundation with a cheque for $1,337.

Wheelchairs for Kids Foundation, with the donations of generous organisations and clubs, build wheelchairs for children with disabilities in developing countries.

In developing countries where health care and other social services are poor to non-existent, raising a child with a disability presents a significant burden to the whole

family. Without a wheelchair a child can be housebound and a burden for a carer, usually the mother.

The gift of a wheelchair gives twice. It not only presents the child with freedom but also frees the mother to work and contribute to the family’s income.

To date the total number of wheelchairs gifted to children in developing countries since the project began in 1998 is 27,042!

This season has seen a continued growth across the various sailing opportunities at HYC. Knee Deep competed in the Sydney to Hobart and is now in Victoria looking for a new home. Deck Chairs Overboard has joined the Offshore yachts on several occasions and has enjoyed success recently at Geographe Bay Race week. There have been weeks where some have been unable to sail but on average we have 16 boats participating. It would be terrific if we could have 20 boats each week for the rest of the season. The Dinghies section has had good numbers despite many other opportunities.

Our training intensity and schedule has increased in most of the courses offered. The Junior Fishing clinic has provided a base for a number of the younger fisherman to compete in the Clubs monthly competitions. The school holiday courses registered 85 sailors participating over the four weeks. This has now provided four new sailors into the Bronze fleet. We have room to accommodate more. The crewing courses have been full and with the inclusion of Ian Conboy’s enthusiasm will continue to grow. We have recently increased the numbers of schools participating in the outdoor sport and recreation course. This is very encouraging and demonstrates the effort that is being put into the sailing school at Hillarys Yacht Club.

Following the efforts of those members who competed in the Class Nationals competitions we are now training for the WA State championships which will be conducted on the March long weekend for Laser and Optimist. Training has been increased and those sailors have continued to demonstrate improvement.

We are currently developing on-line applications for all of our courses which will assist with the administration. All of our courses can still be sourced through the office.

We wish Mel Harvey a speedy recovery following surgery in February.

COACHES CORNERSAFETY AND THE RULES

Recently we have had some windy race days.

We need to prepare for these by keeping an extra special look out for other boats and increasing the distance between boats.

Try to avoid bearing away tack out of the way is safer.

Traditionally in the Christmas period annual National competitions are conducted rotating around the states. At Christmas time no less than 14 HYC members made the journey to compete in the Laser and Optimist Championships which were conducted on the Mornington Penninsula at McCrae and Mornington.

Prior to leaving many hours had been spent in training on the water and personal fitness to prepare all sailors participating in regattas with training programs both in WA, Melbourne and Sydney. Several experienced the drive to Melbourne that can take three days, ask Chris Kelly, or seven days, just ask Lucas Pohl. Driving the Nullabor is always an experience, this year it was green but there is always lots to look at. A highlight was meeting the owners of Mundrabilla station at Madura Pass.

The practice race day at the Lasers was enlightening when the fleet was hit by a 50 knot storm. Four Lasers were abandoned to be washed up on the beach an hour later with extensive damage.

In the Laser Radial class the sailors from WA dominated, with World champion Tristan Brown 1st and 15 year old FSC sailor Alister Young 2nd. Brad Utting again finished in the top 10 which is a terrific effort.

At the Optimists there were 344 with 38 from WA and five from HYC. There were 110 coach and support

boats on the water. Parking all of the Ribs was interesting.

Campbell Stewart, Josh Pang and Jackson Porter all competed in the open fleet and all were selected in the AOS (Australian Optimist Squad) They have since been travelling to events and are now preparing for the New Zealand Nationals at Easter.

Eleanor Wise and Lucas Pohl participated in the intermediate fleet of over 100 boats. Both did well with Eleanor surprising her coach when she won the first race.

Congratulations to all who participated and a special thanks to all of the parents and support we received.

Summer season sailing is about halfway done surprisingly and apart from our Saturday club championship racing there have been numerous regattas at local clubs plus the Nationals Championships for Optimists and Lasers in Victoria.

HYC sailors did well in Victoria in spite of some tricky weather and tidal movements. Chris Kelly went over as Coach and given his significant experience was able to provide some good advice to our sailors on the local conditions. Through our fundraising efforts we were able to provide some support to the coaching effort and to give support to HYC families towards their transport or charter costs for boats used in the Optimist and Laser Nationals.

Socially we had our end of year Family Fun Day just before Christmas and as usual it was a fantastic day. While there was a component of water based activities, none related to actual sailing of anything; although there was a competition to see how many adults versus how many junior sailors could sit in an Optimist and still keep it afloat. It was a no contest result. There was also a Santa look alike competition of sorts – I don’t think there was a winner. Later that evening we reconvened at the Burbidge’s for a Christmas BBQ and a few refreshments to bring the year 2013 to an end.

Cow Rock race was again a highlight event and although part of our summer championship series we do invite others to join us on the water – particularly the Tasar Association who have lent support to the establishment of this two handed class into HYC. Our club is now the largest Tasar sailing club in Perth, I am informed, with 9 boats now in our fleet. A fantastic outcome considering it is only just over 12 months ago that the push to introduce a two handed boat was made.

It was good to see HYC club members out in their power and keel boats anchored and watching the mornings sailing and my thanks goes to Frog Belly – Warner Glen Estate for providing wine to volunteers and spectator boats and to Danny Rechichi for making the deliveries on water.

As I mentioned Fundraising is a part of Dinghy Division activities and apart from Bunnings sausage sizzles days we also held a Garage sale weekend with thanks to the Wise family. These funds are for specific purposes – the main

objective being support for HYC Junior sailors competing at Nationals events noted above and the second objective was for the provision of furniture and fittings for the newly opened Junior Clubhouse.

The Junior Clubhouse was opened by Commodore Chris Grant on first of February in beautiful weather and with a big crowd of members, sailors, Committee and Flag Officers. The event went very well and Commodore Chris dutifully cut the ribbon and formally opened the Junior Clubhouse. Though predominantly proposed by past Dinghy Captain and now Vice Commodore Simon Davenport to be for junior sailors we do have at HYC a wider junior group – particularly those from fishing and the Junior Clubhouse is for their use along with the sailors.

I would like to thank VC Simon Davenport and his business Carpets Online for the generous donation of the carpet and vinyl floor covering. To a number of club members who have donated items like a pool table and other furniture. My thanks also to Paul and Sabine Wise and my wife Lynda for the hours of cleaning a tidying up done prior to opening and to many others who have contributed to make the day very special.

Mola MolaThe Mola Mola is commonly known as the ocean sunfish. Resembling a fish head with a tail, it has long dorsal and ventral fins which can span 2.5 metres. This peculiar fish has a main body that is flattened laterally and can grow to an average weight of 1,000 kgs. This is one huge fish!

Sunfish diet consists mostly of jelly fish and are in turn eaten by sea lions, orcas and sharks. I can’t say that I have ever seen any of the sunfish predators in Bali, so the sunfish tourism is booming. In saying that, it is hard to catch a glimpse of one. I finally took an underwater photograph of a Mola Mola after 4 years of holiday diving around Nusa Lembongan in Bali.

The scuba diving around Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Cenigan and Nusa Penida is mostly drift diving with several ‘world class’ dive sites. Drift diving is like flying and you are always on the lookout for the smallest anemone shrimp on the reef and the huge Mola Mola out in the deep blue. Most comfortable in the cold water, the Mola Mola come up with the deep cold thermoclines to be cleaned by other fish. I spotted this magnificent creature at 32 metres and it was the most beautiful sight.

After taking a rare photograph of this shy creature, I learned that Murdoch University was conducting ocean sunfish research. If you donated a side-on photograph of a sunfish, the researcher would identify individual sunfish based on their unique skin patterns. This is also how whale shark identification is done. If your sunfish hadn’t been identified before, then it will be named after you. So I named this sunfish ‘Judy’ Mola Mola.

Giant Manta RayDiving on the south west side of Nusa Penida at dive sites, Manta Point and Secret Manta, you are given a 99% chance of seeing giant Manta ray. We have never been disappointed with this shallow, cold, surgy dive. Manta arrive at the ‘cleaning station’ at Manta Point where parasites are removed by other fish.

At Secret Manta, which is not really very secretive, the Manta swim around with open mouths, swallowing large quantities of zooplankton. The odd bamboo shark can also be sighted at these sites.

The diving section will be trying to spot another ocean giant in April this year. The 22 HYC members will relax for 8 days of fishing, Whale Shark snorkelling and diving both the Navy Pier and around the Murion Islands. This will be a first for me as my diving adventures continue…

The Power Section has been very active both as a group and individually over the summer months.

On an individual basis many members have spent several weeks over at Rottnest during the last couple of months and enjoyed the cooler temperatures on the Island whilst the mainland has sweltered at times.

The first group activity to report, our Jurien Bay weekend was thoroughly enjoyed by those who took part. We arrived at the units on Friday afternoon after an interesting trip by whatever route we chose. Personally I decided that a scenic route was most appropriate whilst those who followed the ‘normal’ Indian Ocean Road were subject to stop and search by Fishery officers on the lookout for over catches – on Friday – on the way there??

Friday evening found us enjoying a sociable drink or two with a few ‘nibblies’ followed by a BBQ on the spotlessly clean electric BBQs over the road on the beach. On Saturday morning after a very healthy ‘fry up’ breakfast we launched the trailer boats (with some assistance from a ‘local’ who had a live battery) and made our way to the islands. A picnic lunch and a swim with the rays occupied us on ‘Favourite Island’. A stop off on the way back allowed us to see just how much beach erosion has take place on the islands since we were there last year. Saturday evening found us dining at the ‘Pub’ whilst several of us ‘made an evening of it’ with a few quiet drinks back at the units – had to be quiet – the others had all retired!!!

On Sunday morning we were all up bright and early for breakfast at the Caravan Park which lasted almost until lunch time! Then, back to the units for packing and clearing up, we made our way home. Many thanks to John and Deanne for the use of the units and of ‘Explorer’ and to Brett and Tash for the use of their RIB.

The Section was joined by the Commodore and his wife for our Christmas Party at the Club. As usual excitement ran high and we could hardly wait for the thrills and delights of the ‘Secret Santa’. After the buffet meal was completed our own tame Santa arrived with his bag of gifts and the merriment knew no bounds!!?? (The supply of wine may have been a slight help there). The Meeting Room was beautifully set up for us and we all enjoyed a good evening. Huge thanks to Danny and the

staff for the room and to Brett for his very own interpretation of Santa.

The Power Section Rottnest Picnic eventuated this year despite the forecast of strong winds and high seas. After several days on the Island enjoying the company of the friendly crayfish we met up with 20 club members In ‘Champagne Corner’ of Narrowneck Bay on Saturday afternoon. Despite the warnings the weather was very kind to us on Saturday and we all enjoyed the afternoon. A most unusual aspect of the weekend was apparent on the trip home. Smoke from the fires on the south

coast was so thick that navigation became a problem for some – we could not see the reef and the marina only became visible from 250m offshore. Still, we all got home safely and are looking forward to next time.

Fremantle Sailing Club Power Section was due to visit HYC for the weekend of 8th/9th February. They were, however, put off by the poor weather forecast and threatened high winds and cancelled on Friday afternoon. The HYC Power Section decided to go ahead with our part of the function and 12 of us turned up at the Club for Saturday dinner and to celebrate Leigh’s birthday with a surprise rendition of ‘Happy Birthday To You’ – unfortunately a very hard to forget experience!!!

Forthcoming events will include a rescheduled river picnic on Saturday March 22nd in Matilda Bay, a lunch trip to Mindarie and a wine trip whose dates are yet to be finalised. Please watch notice boards and Compass Flyers for more details.

A summer season of keel sailing provides a variety of consistency races in local waters, ocean races to and from Fremantle, Rottnest and Mindarie and short upwind/downwind races in the North Coast Series with the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club. Already the Consistency 1 series of 5 races (4 to count) has been decided with Hard Evidence first followed by Sally Malay and Mulberry in Div 1, whilst in Div 2 Covert Operation was first and Pinta second and Blue Chip third. No doubt these yachts will be battling it out in the final few races to determine the overall Consistency winner for 2013/14. In the JAM fleet the big improver this season has been the performance of Holly Molly and leads the Consistency points table from Perle and Andrea. In the Ocean Series (Div 1 and 2 only) results are similar however Dart Vader, Juni and HYC Training are also in the mix.

The ORSSC-HYC North Coast Series is fought off Mullaloo in often fluky or changing wind conditions and in the half-hour races one has to sail the perfect race to beat the handicapper. So to be a consistent placegetter such as Missing Linck (ORSSC) is meritorious. Others performing well include Pinta, Holly Molly, Volant, Dart Vader, Tropical Itch, Zinfandel, Pandora, Hard Evidence and Deckchairs Overboard from HYC and Leda, Overloard, Safarri, and Pegasus from ORSSC; all of whom have been placegetters. HYC leads the Series and with only a couple of races left the money is on HYC to retain the trophy!

Hillarys Yacht Club can be proud of the way they hosted the very successful Pot of Gold/Dash for Cash in December. Whilst offshore yachts from other clubs dominated the around Rottnest race in Pot of Gold, Synergy was 3rd in Div 3 YAH and Kraken (1st) and Dart Vader (3rd) performed brilliantly in the Double-Handed division. A small fleet of Division 1 to 4 yachts started together in the Dash for Cash race run simultaneously with the off-shore racers however their course made it a dash down the coast to Hillarys Yacht Club with only a small beat back to windward. Sally Malay made the most of the spinnaker run and was first and fastest in Division 1, Hard Evidence was second and similarly in Division 2 Covert Operation won the tussle with Juni for first and fastest, with Volant and Pandora not

far behind. In Division 3 there was never more than a minute between Bali rally participant, Comfortably Numb and Perle with the latter taking line honours by 20 secs but beaten soundly on handicap.

Several yachts ventured down to the Cockburn Sound Regatta (brings back fading, rose-coloured memories of a 16 year old in a Cherub!) with Deckchairs Overboard (4th), Andrea (11th) and Haywire (13th) in JAM whilst in Premier Cruising Hard Evidence was 4th. Dramas included deckchairs heading overboard when aground on the mud flats, Haywire wrapping the mooring around the keel (Mulberry copied that rounding Sorrento marker on OZ Day race) when coping without an engine due to starter motor failure and Hard Evidence’s challenge to retain a dinghy petrol cap. Reports of the onshore activities highlight said skippers and partners performing equally impressive manoeuvers in Turkish and congo-line dancing!

Fifteen yachts turned out for the Australia Day race and in fairly windy conditions spotting the marks was made more difficult, especially if slightly submerged or picked up by a keel! In Div 1 Dart Vader won narrowly from Hard Evidence and First Impression and in Div 2 the order was Covert Operation, Blue Chip and HYC Training. In JAM the special race specialist Stephen O’Keeffe in Comfortably Numb won ahead of Holly Molly and Minx. Crews and families enjoyed the entertainment and BBQ that followed making it a great Australia Day.

The ORYC (not to be confused with the ORSSC) is being wound up and as a sign of the appreciation of the great work being done with junior sailors by HYC, they decided to make a donation of $1000 to our club. In accepting the donation from Brent Ireland, Commodore Chris Grant acknowledged the kind and generous gift, especially given the imminent opening of the Junior Clubhouse.

Many thanks to the start tower team and those who venture to Mullaloo for the North Coast or in the RIB laying marks for making racing possible, without your commitment we could not have such a successful season, thank you!

As from 1 January 2014 the Depart of Transport require all vessels to carry a compliant EPIRB if proceeding more than two nautical miles from the mainland shore or more than 400 metres from an island located more than 2 nautical miles from the mainland shore.

A compliant EPIRB is a 406MHz (AS/NZS 4280.1) EPIRB that is approved for marine use. This type floats in a manner that keeps the antennae above the water, has a lanyard to secure it to something that is not going to sink and can operate continuously for 48 hours. It must have an in-date battery and you are required to keep the battery in date. Expired batteries need to be replaced by the manufacturer who will attach a new expiry date to the EPIRB.

You are required by law to register the EPIRB with the Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA). This is a free service and can be completed on line via www.amsa.gov.au/beacons and this allows vital information to assist in the case of a rescue. Once AMSA issue a registration sticker place it on the EPIRB as it provides a proof of registration which will be required to be sighted by a marine inspector. Re- registration is required every two years.

On the local front your Marina Facilities Committee work continuously to improve the standards that provide you with the comfort of being in a safe and secure environment. As such you are responsible to ensure that you and your visitors also contribute to these standards.

Some of the common continual complaints are:

• Rubbish left on jetties or in barrows. Please ensure that rubbish is removed and disposed of appropriately in the skip bins provided and the barrows returned to their usual location.

• Power points and in some cases leads left turned on after the departure of vessel. If you depart from your pen you must turn off the shore power at the jetty as a safety requirement. A more in depth article will be in the next publication.

• Boats travelling at excessive speed within the marina. It is a requirement that the speed limit when passing anchored or moored boats is 6 knots. Damage caused to halyards and ropes on yachts.

Significant damage has been noticed to halyards and ropes simply left hanging from the mast and left to rub on the cross trees. Have your halyards and ropes tied off to the side or to the pulpit or stretched back from the mast whenever you are not sailing.

Beach Fishing Competition 9Th And 10Th NovemberHot, sunny weather with an early sea breeze did not encourage many anglers to try their hand from shore for this competition and only six anglers were signed on, with only four of these able to weigh in a fish (each with a pike).

Two species were caught on the day with the best fish, a 518g tailor, caught by Janine McLeod who also was the winner with two species and 26.480 points.

Second was Sean Potter with his 280g pike and 17.560 points. Third was Julie Loran with her 235g pike (17.470 points) followed by Dennis Loran with his 211g pike (17.422 points).

There is no doubting the dedication and resolve of some anglers as Dennis Loran describes his first beach fishing competition involvement.

November Boat CompetitionWith the demersal fish season still closed, boats fishing this competition remained closer to shore chasing as many school and pelagic species as possible . However, the demersals must have been aware of the season closure and some were happy to get a free feed knowing they would be released. One such dhufish, measuring 77cms was caught by Allan Partridge and successfully released. This was followed by a couple of legal sized pinkies which were also released successfully. These were all caught on whiting rigs and have anglers looking forward to the open demersal season in December.

In all, 24 anglers signed on for the competition and seven species were weighed in.

Junior winner was Jake Speed with three species and 36.398 points. Followed by Zack Currie with two species and 25.774 points.

Lady winner was Janine McLeod, also with three species and 35.076 points.

Men’s winner was Eric Lay, with four species and 48.284 points. Eric’s bag included a magnificent King George whiting weighing 1.029Kg and a flathead weighing 800grams. Second was Sean Potter also with four species and 46.972 points. Frank Pierucci was the third man also with four species.

Winner of the wheel spin was Eric Lay for his 800g flathead.

Wednesday Fishing Report

Some of the regular Wednesday Anglers held a windup on Wednesday 4th December where the activities of the year were reviewed. It was reported that fishing was held only on 16 occasions due mostly to poor weather and on some occasions, insufficient numbers.

Ian McCall was declared the winner of the annual competition.

ALL CLUB MEMBERS are invited to join the inshore fishing trips on Wednesdays, with the boat leaving at 0700 and returning by 1400 hrs. Anglers need to bring their fishing gear and bait, lunch, chair and drink. Cost depends on the running time of the boat motor but is generally less than $35.00. Members intending to fish should enter their names on the boat book at reception up to one week prior to the fishing day and watch for the weather forecast on the Tuesday night. A forecast of winds in excess of 20 knots generally cancels the trip but a phone call to (Rear Commodore) Ian McCall (94477566) to confirm is advised.

December Boat CompetitionA good weather forecast encouraged 18 anglers (11 men, two ladies and five juniors) to sign on for the competition despite the closed season for demersal scalefish still in place.

It is good to see the number of juniors increasing and becoming more involved in the angling section activities.

Fish however were not easily attracted and only nine species were weighed in, with nearly all anglers catching whiting, but only one in three catching a herring. Fish of the day would have been Zack Currie’s 880gram king George whiting, while Frank Pierucci’s 303g whiting was also a good specimen.

Junior winner was Zack Currie with three species and 36.668 points with Jake Speed second also with three species and 35.032 points.

November Junior winner Jake Speed, Lady winner Janine McLeod, Man winner Eric Lay December Junior winner Zack Currie, Lady winner Janine McLeod, Man winner Sean Potter, wheel spin winner Sophia O’Kane

The mystery fish wheel spin was won by Sophia O’Kane for her 122g garfish, which was the only one caught.

Junior Fishing ClinicFollowing a visit to the Fisheries Department at the Naturaliste Discovery Centre on Monday, safety rules and fishing techniques were explained by the volunteers from the Angling Section before the next two mornings were spent at sea on the Club boats.

With 24 junior anglers signed on for the three day January clinic, the three club boats, Balaton Jack, Mirage and Hillarys 23 were needed to safely accommodate them all in seas which became lumpy as the mornings progressed.

The fish seemed easier to find on the Tuesday, with the best fish caught, a leatherjacket weighing 1.604 kilograms caught by Luke Richards followed by a King George Whiting weighing 685 grams caught by Luke Miller.

Wednesday was the competition day with six species weighed in. The winner with four species was Callan Williams.

Prizes were given to the anglers who caught the heaviest of each species as well as Callan and Luke Richards who had the best fish caught on the Tuesday.

Thanks to the Angling section members who gave of their time to help make this event successful.

January Boat Competition 19th January, 2014With a good forecast, 20 anglers (13 men, two ladies and five juniors) signed on for the day’s fishing.

A good crowd was in place for the 4.00pm weigh in where expectations were for some good demersal specimens as this was the first competition since the end of the closed season on these species. This was not the case however, with only 11 species weighed in, with no demersal scalefish.

Winner on the day was Greg Young with 5 species, from Mick Contoulas, also with 5 species.

Lady winner was Julie Loran with 3 species, while the junior winner with 2 species was Zac Currie. All winners were presented with their prizes by the Rear Commodore ( Angling) Ian McCall.

The wheel spin winner was Sean Potter for his 556g mackeral.

Beach Fishing Competition 2Nd /3Rd February15 hardy souls participated in this event which was based at Club Capricorn and fished in windy weather with a strong wind warning both days.

It appears that a school of herring kept interest up with both lady winner (Janine McLeod) and men’s winner (Garry Cunningham) both weighing a winning fish with Garry’s fish of 228grams the biggest of the day.

A full report on this competition, together with reflections from Dennis Loran will be published in the next Compass.

Stories from the Saturday evening barbecue could be interesting.

Cruising in Company have enjoyed some special outings in the last three months. Longreach Bay was just clear and beautiful with some new games to play on the silver sands and a great meal at the Geordie Bay Cafe. Stark Bay was equally pristine and crystal clear waters, with a lovely shared meal on the beach. Fremantle was a good sailing experience with more good food at Fremantle Sailing Club. A very cleverly designed quiz had the thinking caps on before the dinner, with the winners, John and Marj Mcguiness, taking home the wine.

You may well have the opinion that ‘Cruising in Company’ do a lot of good sailing, eating very well, playing beach games and relaxing in between. This is very close to the truth. Our last cruise to Rockingham was a combination of all those features mentioned above. In addition to this, as guests of T.C.Y.C. , we enjoyed their Sunday entertainment from 5:00pm- 8:00pm and were treated to a fabulous “Australia Day Fireworks Spectacular” starting at 8:30pm. A strong Southerly sent us home very quickly indeed.

A new activity in the form of a ‘Photo Competition’ has been adopted after a guest lecturer (Gareth Lynch) shared with us some of his wisdom and experience in the art of taking pictures. Already, some of our cruisers have taken some outstanding photos and since “pictures tell a thousand words” we are including some to beautifully illustrate what we in CIC experience.
