April 2013 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Members and Friends of the Hill United Presbyterian Church: I have shared with you before that it is my sense that Hill Church has a desire to continue to grow: to grow spiritually in relation to Jesus Christ as individuals and as a congregation; to grow missionally in the love and justice of Jesus Christ for others; and to grow numerically as more lives are changed for Jesus Christ and added to the congregation. There are outreaching areas of growth. This involves change and transformation in the way we pray and in the way or ways we approach our various ministries. With this in mind, our Session affirmed our participating in the Acts 16:5 Initiative through the Vital Churches Institute and Beaver-Butler Presbytery. You will hear and see much more about this in the months and years ahead. Please keep our Church in your prayers as we enter into this emphasis on growth and transformation in our ministry together for Christ Jesus. ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING

UPDATE Thank you for contributions made to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering over the Lenten and Easter Season. The Hill Church total collected for 2013 was $1,278.10.

Cassandra Ahudenu

The Ghana Mission Task Force is highlighting this Ghanaian schola rsh ip awardee. Please pray for her success at school. Feel free to correspond with her.

Cassandra Ahudenu is 23 and tells us that there are eight in her family; her mother, father, three brothers and two sisters. Her mother is a principal nursing officer and her father is retired. They live in Bubiashie, a suburb of North Kaneshie in Accra. This family attends the Bubiashie EP Church. Cassandra is pursuing a business management degree at Zenith University College. Her favorite classes are Ghanaian economics and management information systems. Cassandra hopes to become a banker and a great lawyer. She is in the student union at her school which is located behind the trade fair in a suburb of Labadi in Accra. She has hobbies in sports (basketball and football), watching movies, playing video games, travelling, listening to good music, reading the word of God, hiking, and reading adventure or romantic novels. Cassandra reports that right now Ghana is very hot and the rains barely come down. She enjoys school and will be graduating in June, God willing. PULPIT FLOWER DONATIONS

Pulpit Flower donations are still needed for the following dates in 2013: April 28, June 30, Oct. 13 and 27, and Dec. 29. Pulpit flowers are $27.00, and you can take them after the service that day if you wish. Forms to

donate are located under the flower chart, which is above the food barrel in the overflow area. Donating pulpit flowers is a nice way to honor or remember your loved ones, and bless our Church at the same time.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

This is the time of the year when the Nominating Committee solicits your help in nominating people for Church Officers as Elders, Deacons, and Nominating Committee members. If you have someone in mind, please list their name on the Nomination Insert included with your Church bulletin in April, and return it to the Church office.

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN NEWS

The Presbyterian Women are sponsoring a collection of educational items for preschool children in New Mexico day care centers. Items such as coloring books, crayons, pencils, games, construction paper, tablets

(lined), scissors, etc are welcome. Items can be brought to the Church by April 16 and deposited on the table beside the food barrel in the overflow area.

Women’s Afternoon TEA

“Ring and Sing Spring

Thing”

All women and girls of all ages are invited to a “Tea” on May 18 at noon in the Fellowship Hall of the Church. Nancy Slezak will

present her program “Ring and Sing” which will include many of those in attendance. Please bring your own teacup if you have a favorite. If you don’t have a favorite or if you forget, one will be provided for you. There is no charge for the Tea, but donations will be gladly accepted.

GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE

REPORT

In Exodus, the Israelites are directed by God through Moses to build the tabernacle or tent of dwelling. Everyone who was willing or eager and excited to participate brought gift offerings to be used for the construction. Note that these folks whose heart had moved them were eager to contribute various items as a spontaneous gift to the Lord. Can we be of the same persuasion as the Israelites were when it comes to eagerness and excitement to offer extra gifts for the Ghanaian scholarship fund? One never knows until they take this, or any other concern to God in prayer. We hope that you will pray about our Hill Church mission. Have you ever checked the Ghana news website? Interesting, to say the least. Similar to the USA news, the site includes news on elections, economic problems, healthcare conflicts, lack of leadership, business, and religious differences. They report crime. But they also report joyful events. Tune in to learn more about this Christian country with a large Muslim influence. This site will also keep us updated on how and when the Ghanaian supreme court will rule on the December presidential election (charges of dishonesty?) The ruling party won by about 3%, but the results of the election are being challenged by the other party. Let us pray for a just ruling. Please keep the Bubiashie District churches, the Bubiashie scholarship committee, as well as the students in your prayers.

HILL ARE FILLING UP FAST!

Remember to sign up at the entrance to the Fellowship hall for your favorite summer program. This year, we are offering movie nights, MAP nights for young children, the Power

Chord Academy, two Sports camp dates, and, of course MAD camp! This year’s MAD camp is “Go Noah!” a retelling of the story of Noah’s Ark. Summer brochures are available at the church with plenty of information, or contact office.

SINGING CITY TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE

Many members of the Hill Church Chancel Choir will be participating in the “Singing City” Event at the Peterson Events Center on April 20, 2013. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will open the inaugural Music for the Spirit Festival in grand fashion with “Singing City,” a large-scale, historic concert event at the University of Pittsburgh’s Petersen Events Center.

“Singing City” marks a cultural milestone for the city of Pittsburgh and will feature Music Director Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in performance with an ensemble of over 2,200 voices from professional choirs, university choirs, high school

choirs, members of religious-affiliated choirs, and more from the Pittsburgh region and surrounding areas. Repertoire highlights include the Chorale Finale of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection,” as well as the world premiere of a newly commissioned work for a cappella choir by Pittsburgh native, Jonny Priano. Tickets are very reasonably priced at $20 adults, $10 students and seniors and $5 for children under the age of 12. The tickets are sold by Ticketmaster as that is who the Peterson Event Center uses for ticketing purposes. 1-800-745-3000 or www.ticketmaster.com

Baking for Meals on Wheels

As we have done in the past, we are asking the c o n g r e g a t i o n t o contribute baked goods for Meals on Wheels.

Since April 1st is Palm Sunday and April 8th is Easter Sunday, baked goods will be collected Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7. They can also be brought early Monday morning. The baked goods will be taken to Meals on Wheels on Monday morning, April 16th. Please mark your calendar, they are counting on US! Baked goods include cookies, gingerbreads, cup cakes, bundt cakes, fruit and pumpkin pies, quick breads, and angel food cakes. Do not use nuts or icing in or on any of the baked goods. Monetary donations will also be accepted. Checks should be made payable to Hill Church, memo to Meals on Wheels.

GRADUATION RECOGNITION

As we move toward the time of Graduation Ceremonies, if there is a member of your family graduating from High School, College, Post-Graduate Studies, Vocational -Technical or any other program,

please tell the Church Office the name of the person and from where they are graduating. Please have this information to us by May 15, 2013. Graduation recognition for high school students will take place in early June, 2013.
