Happy New Year to you all!

It’s been all over the news about schools with Oxbridge offers for their students. I’m delighted to confirm in

our first year two of our students have received offers from Cambridge University. Theo Rooney will be

reading Geography and Antoinette Simon Veterinary Medicine. It has always been our ambition for all our

students to go to a top third university or top 100 Apprenticeship. A full list can be found on page 5.

It’s been super to see so many of you at the Progress Review afternoons. To date Year 11 and yesterday

afternoon Year 9. Please remember we expect 100% attendance from pupils and parents to ensure your

child receives all the invaluable feedback from our incredibly hard-working teachers. If you are unable to attend

a Progress Review evening, please ensure you inform your child’s Civitas tutor prior to the event so we can

make sure your child is taken around at the start of the afternoon by a member of staff.

On Monday 28th January we welcome Mrs Knight to the leadership team. Mrs Knight comes to us from

Wandsworth Educational Services with 25 years of experience working with children in our borough. She will

be our new Director of Inclusion taking over from Mr Kerby. Mr Kerby has been with us since September

2012 – a founding member of staff. Mr Kerby has been invaluable in his 7 years at Bolingbroke to drive our

inclusion programme and communication with parents to implement our Rewards and Behaviour Policy. Mr

Kerby has been appointed Vice Principal at Skinners Academy in Hackney. I know you will all join me to wish

him well when he leaves at the end of the Spring term.

Finally, after months of hard work it’s that time of year for our annual musical. A massive thank you to Ms

Breckon and the Music team, Ms Murphy and Mr Kalorkoti for preparing our pupils/student for this year’s

production of the Little Shop of Horrors. Please don’t forget to purchase your ticket on Wise Pay to avoid

disappointment. I believe tickets for Friday 8th February have nearly a sell-out! See you all there!

Hound WINNERS OF 2018 YEAR 7 INVENTION CONVENTION

This year was the most creative, and strongly contested Invention Convention yet! Year 7 Inventors created some

of the most creative inventions we have seen yet! The judges commented that it was almost impossible to

decide. There was however a clear winner. The award for Best in Convention went to Daniel Clements-Armian for

inventing the Crutch-Brella. A useful crutch with a build-in umbrella is designed to allow a person using a crutch to

have a free hand on a rainy day. His thoughtful invention and sleek design stood out from the rest. He was

presented with a certificate at whole school assembly and will receive his trophy at Speech Day in 2019.

Hound UCAS: "HOORAY FOR US FOR BEING SO BRILLIANT!"

The UCAS deadline for university applications has now passed and a substantial 89% of the Class

of 2019 have applied to go on to further undergraduate study, including a range of courses from

electrical engineering to business management. Many of our students already have offers from

their chosen universities and are working hard to achieve the grades required. Please see some

photos below of some very happy students who have received offers thus far!

Year 13 Professional Pathways Applied Science Students: Anthony Thompson (Electrical

Engineering), Shannon Creasey (Human Biology), Aleyna Salman (Business Management), Hassan

Bushnag (Biology)

In addition, two of our Year 13 students, Theo Rooney (Geography) and Antoinette Simon

(Veterinary Medicine) have also been offered places to study at Cambridge University, beginning

in September 2019. These places are highly competitive and students must excel in both a

difficult written exam and gruelling day-long interview process before being offered a place, so

well done to them and all of our other applicants!

By 1st May, all students with offers should then decide on a firm and an insurance university that

they will select. We advise all students to speak to one of the sixth form team before making this

decision.

Current opportunities for year 12 and 13 students

It is crucial that year 12 students take advantage of some of the opportunities available to them. These

activities not only help to create well rounded young people and add to their subject knowledge they

are what University admission staff and Apprenticeship recruiters are looking for when reading

applications.

Year 10 Year 10 will be planning their work experience over this academic year and will be out on work

Work shadowing will take place for year 10 on Tuesday 12th March 2019.

Capgemini ‘App in a day’ event

When: Friday 8th February

Where: 40 Holborn Viaduct, London EC1N 2PB

What: Capgemini have exclusively invited Ark students to take part in a full day event ‘App in a day’ where they

will be working with Capgemini and one of their largest real life clients, to come up with an innovative and creative

solution to a real life scenario, part of which will be creating an app.

Who:

Students interested in applying for an apprenticeship, in particular a Tech Degree Apprenticeship

Studying business/computer science

Open to tech or business careers even if they aren’t studying it now

Interested in finding out more about this sector and tech careers

Love technology but might have ruled it out as a career

SUCCESSFUL START TO NEW YEAR

The start of a new term is always an exciting time and the start of the Spring Term was no exception.

Bolingbroke Academy started the new year and new term with our Achievement Assemblies. The success

of pupils in all year groups was celebrated on Tuesday 8th January.

Certificates were awarded to those pupils who had made excellent progress in the Autumn Term. Bronze

certificates were awarded to pupils who achieved an Average Points Score (APS) of 1 - 1.5 above their

target. Silver certificates were awarded to pupils who achieved an APS of 1.5 - 2 above their target. Gold

certificates were awarded to pupils who achieved an APS of 2+ above their target grade. Certificates were

also awarded to those pupils in each year who have the most house points. It is brilliant to be able to start

the year with so much to celebrate.

SIXTH FORM CELERATES CHRISTAMS

APPEALING FOR KidsOut

In December of last year, students in the Sixth Form

took on the challenge of arranging a Christmas Toy

Appeal for charity, KidsOut - a charity that works

with victims of domestic violence and their children

in Women’s Aid refuges, to ensure children have

some sense of stability and home comforts, such as

toys, in a new environment. The aim of their Giving

Tree initiative is that each child will have access to

at least one new, unused toy this Christmas in a situa-

tion where many have nothing. Our upmost gratitude

is expressed to the Sixth Form students and parents

who generously donated over 150 toys which will

make a massive difference to the lives of children this

Wandsworth Sports Hall Athletics - 16.01.2019

Year 8 Boys Team: Regan Tahi, Nevaldo Cummings, Ellis Roth, Joseph Green, Alex Bastos, and Rayaan Ahmed.

Nevaldo won gold for the 2 Lap Individual race with a time of 21.6s

Regan won gold for the 4 Lap Individual race with a time of 46.6s

Regan and Ellis won gold for the 8 Lap Paarlauf with an impressive 96.5s

Regan, Nevaldo, Ellis and Alex came second in the Relay by 0.2s, winning silver.

Joe won silver in the vertical jump with a score of 52cm.

Overall, the year 8 boys team finished 4th in a very competitive borough.

“After learning about French breakfast habits, Y8 classes studying French have taken this great opportunity this week by

bringing and discovering delicatessen such as croissants, pains au chocolat, chocolats Lindt, brioches Pasquier,

confiture Bonne Maman, biscottes, crepes, crème de speculos and many more in lesson.

We had such a great time at eating those and were definitely full by the end of the sessions!

It was a great way to say goodbye to these lovely groups. I wish them all the best for the rest of their Y8, without

forgetting all my other teaching groups!” Ms Konneradt

Following on from last year’s enchanting musical production of “Beauty and the Beast”, Bolingbroke Academy is proud to

present the even more monstrous, smash-hit, “Little Shop of Horrors”.

Meek flower shop assistant Seymour pines for co-worker Audrey. During a total eclipse, he discovers an unusual plant he

names Audrey II, which feeds only on human flesh and blood. The growing plant attracts a great deal of business for the

previously struggling store. After Seymour feeds Audrey's boyfriend, Orin, to the plant after Orin's accidental death, he

must come up with more bodies for the increasingly bloodthirsty plant.

Performances take place on Wednesday 6th February, Thursday 7th February & Friday 8th February, 7pm-9pm. Tickets are £8, or £5 for

concessions, and are already selling out on Wisepay - make sure you snap yours up now!

Bolingbroke Academy performed for the residents of Nightingale House Care Home

On Tuesday 18th December, the Music Scholars and Apprentices of Bolingbroke Academy performed their own concert

for the residents of Nightingale House Care Home in Wandsworth. All term the pupils had been preparing their own

ensemble performances; the Scholars selected and arranged their own music specially, and led regular rehearsals with the

apprentices.

The residents were treated to some festive performances of The Darkness’ Don’t Let the Bells End, Holly Jolly Christmas,

a chamber performance of Habanera from Carmen, and a fabulous a cappella version of All I Want for Christmas is You.

The Scholars and Apprentices rounded off the concert with a whole ensemble performance of Skyfall by Adele, the James

Bond theme song. After the performance, the pupils mingled with the residents over tea, where they got to find out more

about their incredibly interesting lives, and vice versa!

Bolingbroke’s connection with Nightingale House began two years ago with a project called ‘Awake’, whereby pupils

aimed to reunite dementia patients with the music they knew and loved from the past, by creating and donating their own

unique Ipod playlists for each resident. We aim to continue this long and fruitful relationship with the care home and hope

to visit again in the Summer for another concert in the garden!

On Wednesday 19th December, a mix of staff and

pupils from Bolingbroke Academy took Clapham

Junction station by storm with their festive carol

singing! Passers-by stopped in their tracks to

appreciate the vocal talents of the 20-strong choir,

who belted out carol classics such as O Come All

ye Faithful, Hark the Herald, and Deck the Halls in

resounding four-part harmony. Over the course of

an hour we raised a whopping 158.50 for the Music

Department of Bolingbroke – well done all!

News from Maths

The maths department would like to wish you all a very happy (albeit belated) New Year! We are excited for what

2019 has in store for the pupils. Already in the first week of Spring term, we have had Year 11 Progress Evening and

were thrilled to see so many of you and the pupils making the rounds to see all of their teachers. All Year 11 pupils

have received 3 Question Level Analyses (QLA) of their most recent GCSE mock papers, each of which break down

where the pupils gained full, partial or no marks. These QLAs are designed to help them be strategic in their

revision targeting topics where they can improve (see Hegarty block below). Regarding Progress Evenings, see be-

low for upcoming Progress Evenings in Spring term. We look forward to seeing you then!

CONCEPT CORNER So with Spring term under way, what have our pupils been engaging

in so far…

Year 7 pupils started Spring term converting units and more

recently exploring capacity and volume and understanding that they

are different concepts.

Year 8 and 9 pupils have been putting their protractors and

compasses to good use, constructing triangles, quadrilaterals, angle

bisectors and perpendicular bisectors. Their exercise books have

been a construction site – have a look and see their lovely work!

Year 10 pupils have engaged in Algebraic reasoning including

solving equations and rearranging formulae, before moving on to

geometric reasoning.

Year 11 are busy revising for their upcoming (and final) set of

mock exams in maths after the half term break.

UKMT: The United Kingdom Mathematics

Trust holds various competitive

“Challenges” throughout the year with the

aim of stimulating problem solving. The

next challenge is the Intermediate Mathe-

matical Challenge for Year 9 and Year 10

pupils.

Theatre Group

For parents and friends of Bolingbroke Academy Penni Coe is able to secure really good deals by reserving large numbers

of seats in advance being groups deals nearly always on mid week dates. Monies are paid directly to her and seat numbers

are allocated when tickets are paid for. She adds a small amount to the ticket price which will go to Parents Association

fundraising. She has also organised sporting and music events as well as theatres tickets in the past so if you have any ideas

for shows or events (the minimum number usually needs to be 15-20 and usually the bigger the group the cheaper the

price) please send her an email (pnncoe@aol.com) and she'll see what she can do.

Classlist

Bolingbroke Academy Parents Association uses Classlist to communicate with parents. It’s a secure private social network

which allows parents to send messages to other parents, organise and help one another out, post questions and share
