The Soho Centre is located in the heart of London’s Soho and is a short walk from Oxford Circus, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and Tottenham Court Road underground stations. This is the main College centre for Access to Higher Education courses. It offers a wide range of English Language classes, including general and vocational ESOL courses, EFL and IELTS courses. The Soho Centre is also the base for the College Creative Learning Lab with media training facilities for hire.

Due to building works taking place in the Victoria Centre this academic year there is a possibility that your course may be held in a different location to the one shown in this guide. We will keep all applicants informed of any changes.

You can travel to any College Centre on the Victoria Line on the London Underground.

The Victoria Centre is in Westminster, a short walk from both Victoria and St James’s Park underground stations. It offers courses in the award winning School of Culinary Arts and Hospitality, which celebrated its 100 year anniversary in 2010. It provides courses in Business, ICT and Enterprise as well as Higher Education and Foundation Degree courses that learners can progress to. It is also the home to the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy.

With 14 kitchens, demonstration theatres, multimedia and ICT suites and an extensive Learning Resource Centre, the Victoria Centre provides excellent facilities for learners. The College’s student-run restaurant, The Vincent Rooms is also located at the Victoria Centre as well as the Professional Development Centre.

This Centre is close to Great Portland Street, Euston Square, Regent’s Park and Warren Street underground stations. It offers ESOL/English courses and community based courses. It is also home to the New Directions Employability Centre, which provides employment training to help adults develop their skills and find employment.

The King’s Cross Centre is in Camden, less than ten minutes walking distance from King’s Cross mainline and underground station. It offers a wide range of academic and vocational courses for 14-19 year olds, including A-Levels and BTECs. It also provides courses for adult learners including Foundation Learning for students with learning difficulties. Built in 2009, the King’s Cross Centre has first-class learning facilities, including:

Enterprise is embedded into every course and all students are encouraged to develop enterprise skills, equipping them with the confidence to fulfil their aspirations. Foundation Degrees and Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degrees

Westminster Kingsway College offers Foundation Degrees and Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree courses in vocational subjects, with many available on either a Full Time or part-time basis. These Higher Education courses are closely linked to employers’ requirements and prepare you for careers in Accounting, Business Management, Facilities Management, Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management and Tourism Management.

Adult Progression to Further Study

The College offers preparation courses at Level 2 for students who are not quite ready to enrol on an Access to HE Diploma or Higher Education course. In addition to a Level 2 Certificate in Progression, where you will learn study and research skills, you will also study for a qualification in Maths and English at GCSE or Functional Skills level. Entry to the preparation course is dependent on the result of diagnostic testing within the first four weeks of the course. The entry requirements for this course are GCSEs in Maths and English (at grade D or above) or an equivalent qualification. You will need to bring your qualification certificates to your interview.

Level 1 and 2 Vocational Courses

Vocational courses are suitable if you want to study a more subject specific course and are not quite ready for the Preparation for Access course. This is a fantastic opportunity to build your confidence and get to know more about the area in which you hope to build your career. We currently offer vocational courses in: Science and Engineering; Health and Social Care; Health Science and Social Care. If you decide to take this option you will complete qualifications in Functional Skills (Maths and English). There are no entry requirements for this course. We will decide on your suitability for the course depending on your initial diagnostic testing which will be completed at your interview.

Access to Higher Education Diplomas

Westminster Kingsway College offers Access to Higher Education Diplomas for students who want to progress onto University. The College is one of the largest providers of Access courses in London. They are designed to prepare you for Higher Education study by building your experiences gained during previous employment, travel or caring for a family.


Pre-University Foundation for Engineering Degrees

The Pre-University course is suitable for adults who need to update their technical knowledge or for those with a scientific background who need to work on their mathematical and laboratory skills before applying for the Degree course in Engineering or Actuarial Science at City University London.

24+ Advanced Learning Loan Learners aged 24 and over who are starting a Further Education course at Level 3 like the Access to HE Diploma may qualify for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. These loans can help to pay for your College tuition fees.

Access to Higher Education Diploma

The Access to HE Diploma is a one year course offering an alternative pathway for adults who wish to progress onto Higher Education/University.

You will develop the subject knowledge, English Language and study skills that you will need to progress to higher study and gain a nationally recognised qualification.

At Westminster Kingsway College, we offer Access to Higher Education Diplomas at Level 3 in the following subjects:

• Business

• English and Media Studies

• Health and Human Sciences

• Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism

• Law

• Midwifery

• Nursing

• Pharmaceutical and Bio-Medical Sciences

• Science and Engineering

• Sports Science

• Teacher Training

Each course is built around key study skills where you will learn how to make notes, write essays, carry out research, develop ideas and gain experience in the range of assessment methods used in Higher Education.

You will study three core modules that are tailored to your needs and choice of pathway:

• Communication

• Research Skills

• Study Skills

You will also be expected to study three or four specialist modules, depending on the subject you choose. In order to gain an Access to Higher Education Diploma qualification you must gain a minimum of 45 units at Level 3 and 15 at Level 2 or 3.

Once you have successfully completed an Access to Higher Education Diploma you could progress onto a Higher Education course at a wide range of universities or Higher Education Institutions.

If you have successfully completed the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Business or Hospitality, Leisure & Tourism you could progress onto a Foundation or Honours Degree course at the Victoria Centre.

Enterprising student, Josephine Ansah, wasn’t sure about coming back into education but since joining the College she no regrets.

Josephine said: “I was so scared coming back into education after a 15 year gap, but I wanted a new life and a new career and the College has helped me on my way. The teachers push us to achieve and now, through their eyes, I can see my potential. Westminster Kingsway College is like a big family. I feel that they teach you more in College as you get more personal attention and extra help. I am developing my own business further and have progressed with my studies.”

Josephine has now completed a Foundation Degree in Business and is currently studying for the BA Honours Degree in Business and Enterprise Management as well as being President of the College Enterprise Society.

GCSE requirements for Access applicants:In order to progress to certain Higher Education courses, you may require GCSE English and/or GCSE Maths to fulfil your university entry requirements. Ideally you will already have GCSE Maths and English at grade A*-C. However we understand that not all students meet this requirement and so you will be considered for an Access course if you have one GCSE at grade A*-C in Maths or English and the other at grade D. A GCSE or functional skills course will be offered as an additional option for the Access course – please note that some GCSE classes may be delivered in the evening. If you don’t have any GCSEs or equivalent qualifications then we will be able to recommend you for another course based on the results of your initial assessment at interview.


What will I study?You will study Biological Science, Physical Science, Psychology and Sociology. The course prepares you for a wide range of health related careers. It is similar in content to the Access Diploma for Nursing/Midwifery, but includes a greater variety of Science units, which upon successful completion could enable you progress to Degree courses including radiography, physiotherapy, speech therapy, paramedics, nutrition, community health and nursing.

Applicants aged 19 or 20 will also be considered if you have experience outside of full-time education, for example through work or travel. Applicants will be assessed through application, interview and tests in English and Maths. Applicants for a Degree in health sciences are expected to have some experience of voluntary or paid work in a health care setting. Ideally you should also have some knowledge of a science-based subject or have a science-based GCSE or equivalent qualification.

Westminster Kingsway College offers a range of Foundation Degrees and Bachelor of Arts (BA) Honours Degrees in vocational subjects. You can choose between Full Time or part-time study on most Degree courses. The College’s Degree programmes are closely linked to employers’ requirements and can prepare you for vocational careers in Accounting, Business Management, Facilities Management, Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management and Tourism Management.

The College’s Higher Education courses take place at the College’s Victoria Centre in central London. Situated next to the picturesque Vincent Square, the Victoria Centre has a long tradition of providing education, having been established for over 100 years. It houses specialist facilities for Accounting, Business Management, Facilities Management, Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management and Tourism Management.

What are Foundation Degrees?• Foundation Degrees were launched in 2000 as a

partnership between colleges, universities and employers. They are one of the fastest growing Higher Education qualifications in the UK.

• A Foundation Degree is a Level 4/5 qualification and the equivalent to the first two years of a full Honours Degree.

• A Foundation Degree is a recognised qualification in its own right.

• In 2001, 4,000 students were studying on Foundation Degrees. By 2014, this figure had grown to over 180,000 students.

• Over half of the students on Foundation Degrees are studying on a part-time basis.

• 75% of students are over 21 when they begin studying for a Foundation Degree.

Westminster Kingsway College offers Foundation Degrees on a full-time, day-release, part-time day and/or evening basis, allowing you to fit your course around your work or family commitments.

All Westminster Kingsway College Degrees are validated by the College’s partner universities, London South Bank University and Sheffield Hallam University. We work closely with the university partners to ensure that our Degrees meet the highest educational standards.


Foundation Degree Additional entry requirementsIf you are under 21 at the start of the course you must have:

• At least one GCE A-level pass, or

• Completed an appropriate full Level 3 qualifications, such as Advanced GNVQ/AVCE, NVQ, National Diplomas, Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificate with passes in five subjects at higher level, passes in Open University courses, pass in a recognised Access course, pass in a link Foundation course, Advanced Modern Apprenticeship with Level 3 qualifications.

• Supporting passes at GCSE (including English and Maths at grade C or above) or Key Skills Level 2 qualifications in communication, IT and Application of Number or equivalent.

• IELTS score of 6.0 with no skill below 5.5, or equivalent English qualification (International students)

If you are aged over 21 years you should have:

• Good experience in industry at operative, supervisory or middle management levels

• Good experience in the workplace

• IELTS score of 6.0 with no skill below 5.5, or equivalent English qualification (International students)

For day release, part-time and evening courses, applicants should be in employment to apply for these courses. However, mature students without the normal entry requirements will be considered on an individual basis, subject to completing diagnostic assessment in Numeracy and English at interview.

Progress to aBA Honours Degree The College also offers the opportunity to progress to a BA Honours Degree in Hospitality Management, Culinary Arts, Business Management or Tourism Management via the ‘Top-up’ Degree courses. These are the equivalent of the third year of a Degree programme (Level 6) and are offered as a one year programme for full-time study and two year programme for part-time study.

Additional entry requirements for the BA Honours Top-up Degrees:Entry requirements for the BA Honours Top-up Degree programmes are a Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent Level 5 qualification in Business Management, Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management or Tourism Management as appropriate.

The Foundation Degree (FdA) Accounting and related

top-up courses are accredited to the Association of

Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and students gain

partial exemption from ACCA Fundamentals. This course

is the only Foundation Degree fully accredited by the

Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) in the UK and

after completing a work placement you can apply

for membership.

The Foundation Degree also provides full exemptions

from the Institute of Financial Accountants (IFA) Level

4 and 5 examinations. The IFA is the internationally

recognised professional accountancy membership body,

whose members work for small or medium enterprises

(SMEs) or who run or work in small and medium-sized

accounting practices (SMPs) that advise SMEs.

to professional development and improving their

knowledge and understanding of accounting theory and

We are committed to making sure that you are supported throughout your studies and provide Learner Consultants at every teaching Centre to help guide you in the right direction. The service is free, confidential and impartial, with qualified staff on hand to assist you in taking the next step.

Learner Consultants and tutors organise a range of enrichment opportunities that you can join, which are linked to the curriculum. These include sports activities, national competitions and trips.

Teaching

We are extremely proud of our teaching staff. With extensive industry experience in their area of learning, as well as many being examiners or moderators for the exam boards, they are on hand to help you learn everything you need to know to get the right qualifications and be prepared for the world of work. Many of our team are still working in the industry and offer the latest teaching methods to ensure that you get the most relevant training in your chosen career.

Online Support

While you are enrolled on a course at Westminster Kingsway College you will have access to our virtual learning environment and student intranet. This gives you online access to learning materials needed for your course, as well as marks and grades, timetables and your attendance record.

Keeping all students safe

Westminster Kingsway College always puts students’ wellbeing and safety first. All Centres offer appropriate security staff, with College ID compulsory for all users of the building. Staff are recruited appropriately and given full training to ensure that you are well cared for while at the

College. We operate a zero tolerance drug policy and do not accept inappropriate behaviour of any kind. Smoking is not permitted at any College site

First class facilities and resources

Westminster Kingsway College is a large College with industry-standard equipment and modern facilities. Open on every site from morning into the evening the Learning Centres offer a good selection of up-to-date books, e-learning tools and other resources, as well as computers with internet access. Staff will help you find information, use IT applications or improve your research and study skills. Most Learning Centres also run activities such as book clubs and CV writing workshops as part of their service. Whether you want a quiet place to study or somewhere to work with your class on group assignments, Learning Centres will provide you with what you need.

Tutors

All learners have access to a named tutor and senior tutor while studying at the College. Tutors will be a source of guidance and support and will help you set and achieve your learning targets and goals.

Enterprise and Innovation Society

The Enterprise and Innovation Society is a group of students from a range of different courses who come together on a voluntary basis with College managers and teaching staff to work together to enhance the learner experience in the College centres at which they study and across the College as a whole. Students can apply to be part of the Enterprise and Innovation Society and further details will be given to you during your College induction.

Student Association

The Student Association is a group of students from a range of different courses who come together on a voluntary basis with College managers and teaching staff to work together to enhance the learner experience in the College Centres at which they study and across the College as a whole. You can apply to be part of the Student Association and further details will be given to you during your College induction.

Course Representatives

Course Representatives are elected for each course group to provide you with the opportunity to feedback your views about the courses and what it is like to be a College student to tutors and the College Executive Team.

Volunteering

We encourage all students to become volunteers with external charities and voluntary groups and can put you in touch with a range of organisations. There are usually internal volunteering opportunities, such as being a study buddy or peer mentor to other learners as well as becoming a Fire Marshall at College events. Everyone who contributes as a volunteer in some way gets their participation recorded on their Individual Learning Plan.

Student Ambassadors

One of the greatest assets we have at Westminster Kingsway College is our students. We recruit Student Ambassadors every year to help represent the College; they conduct tours around College Centres, visit local schools or help at Open Days. Each Student Ambassador works hard to ensure that everyone knows just what being a student is really like.


Becoming involved in College life is an excellent way of getting more from studying at Westminster Kingsway College. Not only will you meet other people but it can provide you with extra experience for your job applications.

Students who do not qualify as “home students” are classified as International students. The College is unable to obtain funding in respect of International students and as a consequence has to charge an International student fee. Payment of Fees

Course fees are payable when you enrol. For some students there may be the possibility of paying in installments, please contact [email protected] or visit a Learner Consultant in any College Centre to find out more.

How to Pay

Westminster Kingsway College accepts various methods of payment for courses and training including via the College website payment portal;

by internet/phone banking; by Barclays Pingit; by PaytoStudy; in person at a College Centre; by telephone; and by post/cheque. Please visit www.westking.ac.uk/howtopay or speak to a Learner Consultant for full details and further information.

Refunds

Westminster Kingsway College has a ‘no refunds’ policy. However, refunds may be considered if any of the circumstances outlined in the College’s Refund Policy has been met. Contact the Learner Consultants team at the College for a copy of the Refund Policy or visit www.westking.ac.uk/refunds.

We understand that there are a number of expenses that students may have that come with taking any College course. The following information outlines the fees applicable for your course and any financial support or loans available to you.

The information included in this Guide is for Guidance only. Please note that fees may change at short notice due to circumstances beyond our control. The fees payable are those in force at the time of enrolment, which supersede any that may have been advertised previously.

How much will it cost?

College Membership Card

The majority of students attending the College will have to pay this fee (£25 in 2015). Your College Membership Card enables you to access College buildings and resources, such as borrowing books and laptops from Learning Centres.

Resources Fee

This covers the cost of essential course materials and resources for your chosen course and is payable on certain courses for all students.

Tuition and Exam Fees

The cost of your course will depend on your fee status, which depends on a number of factors such as residency. Normally, you are a ’home student’ if you are an EU/EEA national and have been resident in an EU or EEA country for the three years prior to 1 September on your year of entry to the College and have no restrictions on your stay in the UK. There are other ways for meeting the criteria of home student status and everyone is given individual advice at enrolment.

You will be asked to provide evidence of your residency and/or nationality/immigration status at the point of enrolment and/ or when you come to your interview. You will need to bring documents, such as your passport, national ID card or immigration paperwork.

You will be advised of any estimated costs you may be charged for your chosen programme of study. Any cost details you are given, which relate to a course of two or three years’ duration, may be for the first year only. It is likely that you will be asked to pay costs at a similar level (subject to an annual increase) for each subsequent year. Maintenance Loans and Maintenance Grants for living costs

To apply for the Maintenance Loan (which must be paid back) or the Maintenance Grant (which does not need to be paid back), you must be a full-time UK resident student. Part-time and EU students can’t apply. You will have to give details of your household income. The loan or grant is paid directly into your bank account at the start of term. You don’t have to pay the Maintenance Grant back, but any grant you get will reduce the Maintenance Loan you can get. Full-time students can also apply for a Special Support Grant if you get or qualify for Income Support or Housing Benefit.

Student Loans For Higher Education Degree students

If you are applying for a Foundation Degree or BA Degree at the College, we can provide specialist advice about Higher Education fees and any assistance available. You can find out about applying for a Higher Education Student Loan to help cover the costs of tuition fees and living expenses. We will be able to help you with information and advice about this when you apply as we will give you information specific to your circumstances and your choice of course.

Please remember that course fees apply for the first year of your course only and any fees for subsequent years of your course may be subject to change. Any course fee information that you receive, which relates to a course of two, three or four years’ duration, will be for the first year only. Contact our Learner Consultants team for further information about course fees for subsequent years of a course.

Tuition Fee Loan

English or EU Full Time or part-time students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan. The loan is paid directly to the college to cover your tuition fees. This loan has to be paid back.

24+ Loans

How do I repay the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan?

Repayments will automatically be deducted from your income through the tax system from April 2016 and when your income is more than £404 per week, £1,750 per month or £21,000 per year. If your income falls below £21,000, repayments will stop and only restart when your income increases to more than £21,000 per year again.

If the loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme and you subsequently go on to complete a Higher Education course you will not have to pay back your 24+ Advanced Learning Loan.

What are the repayment rates?

The monthly repayment would depend upon your salary after completing your course. You will pay 9% of any income over £21,000 a year. Please see the table opposite for examples:

24+ Loans


24+ Advanced Learning Loan

For Access to Higher Education

Diploma students

Students aged 24 and over who are starting a Further Education course may qualify for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. These loans can help to pay for your College tuition fees. These loans are not a Higher Education Student Loan.

Most students aged 24 and over, studying at Level 3 and above at an approved college in England like Westminster Kingsway College, will qualify for these new loans from the UK government. It’s easy to apply, household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check. Students won’t have to pay anything back until their income is over £21,000 a year.

In addition, students who progress from an Access to Higher Education Diploma course to complete a Higher Education Degree can have their outstanding 24+ Advanced Learning Loan for the Access course written off.

24+ Advanced Learning Loan

For Access to Higher Education Diploma students:

If you are applying for an Access to Higher Education Diploma at the College, please contact the College about the course fees and any financial assistance available. You may be eligible to apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to help cover the costs of tuition fees. We will be able to help you with information and advice about this when you apply as we will give you information specific to your circumstances and your choice of course.

To qualify you must be:

• Aged 24 years or over on the first day of yourcourse (there’s no upper age-limit)

• Living in the UK on the first day of your course and have lived in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for three years immediately before your course starts

• Studying with a college or training organisation in England approved for public funding (including Westminster Kingsway College)

• Enrolling on an eligible course at Level 3 and above which includes: Access to HE Diplomas, other Diplomas and Certificates

Student Charter

• Wear your College Membership Card at all times and show it if requested to do so by any member of staff

• Work actively with your personal tutor and/or teachers to plan and develop your learning

• Attend all classes punctually and regularly and explain any absences

• Complete and hand in all work set within the agreed timescale

• Allow others to work and study without interruption or disruption in the Learning Centres, libraries, classrooms and other study areas

• Use College ICT and computer facilities only for College study purposes

• Treat College property, equipment and facilities with respect at all times

• Observe the no smoking regulations and know and follow fire drill procedures

We expect students not to:

• Intimidate anyone if they have different abilities, views or beliefs

• Bring onto College premises or carry any knives, guns or other offensive weapons

• Bring onto College premises or consume or use on College premises any alcohol or illegal drugs

• Use mobile phones during classes or in the Learning Centres

You can expect the College to:

• Place you on a programme of learning appropriate to your needs, abilities and intentions for the future

• Give you clear information about the requirements and structure of your course throughout the programme

• Provide you with a clear plan of when you will be assessed or tested

• Offer learning support to meet your identified needs

• Provide you with a safe working environment

• Provide you with teaching that will support you to achieve your learning goals

• Have lessons that start and finish on time

• Have your work marked and returned within an agreed timescale

• Give you regular feedback on your progress with your studies

• Provide you with learning materials and technology appropriate to your study needs

• Use learning technologies, including online learning, for your studies where appropriate

• Give you opportunities to comment on the services that the College offers and to contribute to improving them further

• Listen to and respond to you if you have a complaint

• Treat you with respect

• Accept your responsibilities as set out in College documentation, including the Student Code

• Observe all College policies, procedures and regulations, especially the College’s equality policies

Receive confirmation of your offerIf successful at interview, you will be offered a place at the College subject to evidence of your exam results, receipt of a good reference and any other relevant entry criteria.

Confirm acceptance of your offer in writingOnce you have received an offer you should confirm acceptance of this offer in writing, by returning the freepost card given to you at interview.

The College accepts applications for courses where there are still places available until the course is due to start. However, to get the best opportunity of gaining a place on your first choice of course, please place on your chosen course and may need to consider alternatives.

If you apply later in the academic year, you will need to come into College to a drop-in interview and enrolment session. For courses starting in September these sessions begin after August Bank Holiday weekend.

If you have a visual impairment, we can send you a text version of the application form which allows you to enlarge it to suit your requirements. Enrol on your courseThose who apply early in the year and receive an unconditional offer for a September start course will be given the option of enrolling earlier in the year – before the main College enrolment period begins in late August. To secure a course place it is important to enrol at the earliest opportunity.

Remember you will not be guaranteed a place on your course until you have fully enrolled and received your College Membership card and signed your Learner Agreement. It is very important to enrol/attend the enrolment date that you have been given. You will be advised what information you need to provide to complete your enrolment.
