Diversity Week 2015

In March, Highbury College successfully held their annual Diversity Festival. The aim of the event is to celebrate and promote equality and diversity within the College and Portsmouth Community. Students and staff were invited to take part in number of interesting and educational activities.

A week-long event across our 3 campuses included Bollywood dancing, Tai Chi demonstrations, origami, henna, threading, book signing by international authors, food from around the world, information & support groups from a number of Black and Ethnic Minority (BME) community groups.

Angela Kountouroudas, Student Engagement Co-ordinator at Highbury College said “The Diversity Fair is a great opportunity to showcase and celebrate the diversity of our student body and local community. We all let our hair loose and had a bit of fun by trying new things, and with the help of our Mexican Wrestlers, we were able to raise money for Red Nose Day.”

Philanthropic Students Celebrate We Day

Some of our Collective Futures students were invited to attend We Day, an annual invite-only event created for young people who become the good they want to see in the world. Our students were asked to attend following their recent philanthropic actions, including a clothes drive for 3 charities.

Speakers at We Day included Sir Richard Branson and President Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Kewku Mandela, and the likes of Years & Years and Conor Maynard performed. Princess Beatrice was also in attendance so a very varied and rewarding day for all.

Gabrielle, one of our students who celebrated We Day, wrote about her experiences, below: “We Day was an excellent experience and day to be a part of. I feel that it was a very motivational, inspirational day to share especially as it was a dedicated day to representing young people. I think it’s hugely impactful as well as important that days like these happen; young people are often reflected in a negative light especially in the current media and aren’t often given the opportunity to have a voice and speak out about how we actually feel towards certain things. I feel that this day showed the power of what young people can do, and will have upon society as it grows to be heard and appreciated.

It’s convincingly obvious that young people of today have the key to success more now than ever before. I really enjoyed having the opportunity to be a part of an event of this type and felt a sense of pride throughout the entire day. Hearing the types of people from all sorts of multicultural environments and backgrounds tell and share their stories is something that, I feel, inspired many, and reflected a lot of peoples’ own thoughts, feelings and experiences. I personally enjoyed the entire day and is one that I would love to be involved with again, as well as it at times being a bit of light hearted fun with the dance routines, the musicians that played, the speakers and especially the entire atmosphere of the day was an overwhelming feeling, and one I will remember for a very long time to come. A day I will look back on to drive my determination to succeed in the future.” I think the slogan of ‘Me To We’ acted as a huge representation of how young people aren’t given enough credit for doing so; if anything I think young people thrive off of helping others and enjoy the support of coming together to help others in whatever the situation may be.

Message from the Principal Dear Students I am proud of the work this College does in providing education and training to help people gain the skills and qualifications they need to get a good job, continue to higher education and succeed in life. To make sure that politicians understand the value of our work in the FE sector, delivered by 300 colleges in England, we need to highlight some key points. For example, a recent announcement confirmed that funding for courses for people aged 19 and over will be cut by 24% next year. A petition has been set up to oppose this cut. I have signed it and I encourage you to do so. By maximising the number of signatures, in advance of the General Election, we can ensure that all political parties understand the importance of education and training. You can sign the petition here: http://fefunding.org.uk/sign-the-petition/ Thank you for your support. Stella Mbubaegbu CBE Principal & Chief Executive

The Government announced cuts of up to 24% to the Adult Skills budget for 2015/16

Congratulations to Students

Collective futures Enterprise Society wins £5K to launch business

The Collective Futures Enterprise Society has won £5K through a national competition put on by NACUE (National Association of Colleges and Universities for Entrepreneurs). The competition was called Ignite and the students had to come up with a business that the society would run.

A few societies across the country from both Universities and Colleges could win £5k and Collective Futures was one of them. The excitement of receiving this reward can be seen throughout many members of our committee, one of which is Ruth Burgess who has felt "this is a great opportunity that has set us up to achieve something that can reach its full potential". The committee’s Social and Events Officer, Emily Wearne, is also "looking forward to see what the future has in store for our society and our business idea". Our Vice President, Ajara, has said that she "cannot be more thankful for the fund we have received from NACUE.

Chasing Mula Launches Urban Fashion Brand

We also have Mauro Farmhouse a BTEC Business Level 3 year 2 student, who has launched his own Urban Fashion Business. He has just been awarded £5K from the local LEP to officially launch. His business, Chasing Mula. Mauro has worked really hard to make sure the products he sells are perfect and of the best quality. Check out his website chasingmula.com and follow them on Twitter @chasing_mula

The Value of Work Experience

Callum Marchant, Construction and Built Environment student (Level 3 Diploma) took part in a one week work placement at PMC Construction; as part of this work experience, he was shown all areas of site and project management. Callum impressed the company so much that they offered him a job straight away! Callum is now working two days a week around his college course working closely with the project managers.

Callum has said that on placement he “asked lots of questions and showed interest” and he feels that both the placement and now his paid job has worked well to support his current studies. “Working for PMC has helped me to practice the skills I have learnt at college in the workplace and also helped me to apply what I learn at work to my college studies”.

Well done Callum!

Champions!

On March 11th, 6 students from Highbury College took part in a regional cricket 24s tournament at Queen Mary's College in Basingstoke, run by AoC Sport and supported England Cricket Board (ECB). Each match consisted of one 24-ball innings, with the side with the highest score winning. The tournament was structured as a league with the winning team going through to the national finals. We are delighted to say Highbury College finished the day unbeaten and are now the regional champions!! Later this month the 6 students will make their way up to Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham the home of Warwickshire County Cricket Club, to play in the national cricket 24s finals day. We wish the students the very best of luck!

International Women’s Day On 6h March, all female students and staff were invited to Tea, Coffee & Cakes morning at Chimes Restaurant to celebrate International Women’s Day. The event was very successful; it was great to see both students and staff supporting this amazing ongoing campaign.

Comic Relief – Red Nose Day During the week of 9th March, the Student Union and students were really into the Red Nose Day spirit by taking part in variety of activities to raise money for Comic Relief. For a week, there were swear boxes and bake sales on the Deck and the Recreation Areas. On 13th March, the Student Union, Student Support Services and students also received sponsorship for cycling 6 hours on the Deck. Together we raised £235 for Comic Relief.

Smoking Cessation This month Portsmouth City Council Health Development Officer and their Smoking Cessation team continued to visit our campuses for a drop-in session, encourage and support our students who want to give up smoking as their New Year’s resolutions. The Smoking Cessation team will be visiting each campus monthly to offer ongoing support to any students throughout this academic year. To find out when the next session, please email [email protected].

Reading Club On 9th March our ESOL students Natnael and Ernest attended an author book signing at Blackwell’s bookshop. He presented and explained the process behind his recently published book ‘The British and Peace in Northern Ireland’. The group will meet on Tuesday once every fortnight at HCPC. It’s open to all Highbury students; if you want to get involved please email [email protected].

Catering Students’ Pop Up Day

On 26th February Chimes restaurant our Catering students organized ‘Pop Up Day’ that aims at showing their amazing skills and ideas for their future businesses. Our guests were offered a three course menu and afterwards could buy products such as brownies, chutneys, cupcakes etc. Our students Kate, Larna, Lauren and Emily made sure products were advertised around the College and everyone could try it! We hope to see more of it next year – especially Pickled Cucumber! Using this opportunity we would like to thank Rob Strachan and our new Atrium Chef Paula for their amazing help and contribution towards Diversity week and beyond. We had international menus throughout the week starting with Hungarian goulash, tucking into Italian pizza on Wednesday and finishing off with a British roast on the Friday. In the Atrium (5th floor) Paula has recently introduced a healthy salad bar that will promote and help our students and staff to boost their vitamin intake and also to get ready for the summer season. Come and join us!

Travel & Tourism – Waxing for Charity

On 25th February our Travel and Tourism student Olie Brooks volunteered to have his chest, back and legs waxed in return for donations for one of the charities. It was great to see his friends and tutor Angie Parkes supporting him through this. One of Olie’s classmates Leeson seeing how painful it was for his friend bravely stepped in and volunteered to have his legs waxed instead. Well done to both of them! The event would not have been the same without our Beauty students Tonitchua and Alex who together with their tutor Sam Miller professionally waxed our students and supported this great charity event.

Join our Health, Care & Early Years department on a trip of a lifetime to The Gambia next April!
