ABOUT THE HIGH SCHOOL SOLOISTS

TEXTS + TRANSLATIONS

Come away, come away, death,And in sad cypress let me be laid.Fly away, fly away, breath;I am slain by a fair cruel maid.My shroud of white, stuck all with yew,O, prepare it!My part of death, no one so trueDid share it.Not a flower, not a flower sweet,On my black coffin let there be strown. Not a friend, not a friend greetMy poor corpse, where my bones shall be thrown.

Quilter: “Come Away, Death”

If only I had a thousand arms to wield! If only I could drivethe rushing wheels! If only I could blow like the wind through every wood, and turnevery millstone,so that the fair maid of the mill would see my true love.Ah, how weak my arm is!What I lift and carry, what I cut and hammer –any apprentice could do the same. And there I sit with them, in a circle, in the quiet, cool hour after work, and the master says to us all:‘I am pleased with your work.’ And the sweet maidbids us all goodnight.

Schubert: “Am Feierabend” from Die Schöne Müllerin

Be thou with me and I’ll go gladlyTo death and on to my repose.Ah, how my end would bring contentment,If, pressing with thy hands so lovely,Thou wouldst my faithful eyes then close.

Stölzel: “Bist du bei mir” from Diomedes

Down here all lilacs are dying, all the songs of the birds are short;I dream of the summers which lastForever...

Down here lips touchwithout parting with any of their velvet;I dream of the kisses which lastForever...

Down here all men weep fortheir friendships or their loves;I dream of the couples who lastForever...

Faure: “Ici-bas!”

Your hands lie open in the long fresh grass, -The finger-points look through like rosy blooms:Your eyes smile peace. The pasture gleams and glooms‘Neath billowing skies that scatter and amass. All round our nest, far as the eye can pass,Are golden kingcup fields with silver edgeWhere the cow-parsley skirts the hawthorn hedge.‘Tis visible silence, still as the hour glass.Deep in the sunsearched growths the dragon-flyHangs like a blue thread loosened from the sky: -So this winged hour is dropt to us from above.Oh! clasp we to our hearts, for deathless dower,This close-companioned inarticulate hourWhen twofold silence was the song of love.

Williams: “Silent Noon”

Already, from over the Ganges, the sunSparkles more brightlyAnd dries every drop of the dawn, which weeps.

With the gilded rayIt adorns each blade of grass; And the stars of the skyIt paints in the field.

You would welcome my death, yet I remain silent, happy to die. If I cannot better my fate, then I shall languish for your eyes.

Vivaldi: “Pur ch’à te grata” from Piango, gemo, sospiro, e peno, RV 675

Oh, desired objectOf my sweet ardor,The air which you breathe,At last I breathe.

Wherever I turn my glance,Your lovely featuresPaint love for me:My thoughts imagineThe most happy hopes,And in the longing whichFills my bosomI seek you, I call you, I hope, and I sigh.

Gluck: “O del mio dolce ardor” from Paride e Elena

Since your eyes are treacherous,I’m going to bury them;you know not what it costs,‘del aire’,dearest, to gaze into them.‘Mother, a la orilla.’

They say you do not love me,but you loved me once.Make the best of it‘del aire’,and cut your losses,‘Mother, a la orilla.’

De Falla: “Canción”

Music for a whileShall all your cares beguile.

Wond’ring how your pains were eas’dAnd disdaining to be pleas’dTill Alecto free the deadFrom their eternal bands,Till the snakes drop from her head,And the whip from out her hands.

Music for a whileShall all your cares beguile.

Purcel: “Music for a while”

I will see with joy,the soul of my soulheart of my heart full of content.

And if from my dear objectI be far awayI will sigh, suffering every moment…

Vivaldi: “Vedrò con mio diletto” from Il Giustino RV 717

My lady, with a gentle armI grasp with pride your waist. You are the ship of love,A sail, my lady, you lack:I am the sail [that can] propel youAround the cerulean sea.You are the nimble ship That glides over the sea of music:I am the robust sailThat directs and cheers the voyage:The ship rises, falls,The sail luffs, fills.Do you want the wave to rollLike the sound of a gentle gavotte?Do you want the waltz to melt awayYour long, feverish journey?I make the customary bow,My lady, and I invite you to dance.

What bestial forceThis winged divinity possesses,Punishing you until you adore him!And still, in my burning passionThis deceitful GodHas made me idolise an enchanting face. How cruel fate isThat a blind childWith a mouth full of milk can fill himself with pride! But this tyrantWith barbaric trickery,Has passed through my eyes and made me sigh!

Legrenzi: “Che Fiero Costume”

I don’t have a sunny disposition.I’m not known for being too amused. My demeanor’s locked in one position.See my face? I’m enthused.Suddenly, however, I’ve been puzzled.Bunny rabbits make me want to cry.All my inhibitions have been muzzled,And I think I know why.

I’m being pulled in a new direction,But I think I like it.I think I like it.

I’m being pulled in a new direction.Through my painful pursuit,Somehow birdies took root. All the things I detested impossibly cute.God! What do I do?Pulled---

Mother always said be kind to strangers,But she doesn’t know what they destroy.I can feel the clear and present dangers,When she learns that the boy...

Has got me pulled in a new direction,But I think I like it.

I think I like it.

I’m being pulled in a new direction,But this feeling, I know is impossible,So I’ll confide that I’ve tried but I can’t let it go.It’s disgustingly true!Pulled, pulled, pulled!

Puppy dogs with droopy faces,Unicorns with dancing mice,Sunrise in wide open spaces,DisneyWorld - I’ll go there twice!Butterflies and picnic lunches,Bunches of chrysanthemums,Lollipops and pillow fights and christmas eve,Sugar plums!String quartets and Chia Pets,And afternoon banana splits,Angels watching as I sleep,And Liberace’s Greatest Hits!

Have got me pulled in a new direction! If they keep insisting, I’ll stop resisting.Just watch me pulled in a new direction.

Du meine Seele, du mein Herz,Du meine Wonn’, o du mein Schmerz,Du meine Welt, in der ich lebe,Mein Himmel du, darein ich schwebe,O du mein Grab, in das hinabIch ewig meinen Kummer gab!Du bist die Ruh, du bist der Frieden,Du bist vom Himmel mir beschieden.Dass du mich liebst, macht mich mir wert,Dein Blick hat mich vor mir verklärt,Du hebst mich liebend über mich,Mein guter Geist, mein bess’res Ich!

You my soul, you my heart,You my rapture, O you my pain,You my world in which I live,My heaven you, to which I aspire,O you my grave, into whichMy grief forever I’ve consigned! You are repose, you are peace,You are bestowed on me from heaven.Your love for me gives me my worth,Your eyes transfigure me in mine,You raise me lovingly above myself,My guardian angel, my better self!

Schumann: “Widmung”

I should stay in the dark,Not obey every spark,But the boy has a bite,Better far than his bark! And you bet I’ll bite too,Do what’s truly taboo,As I’m pulled in a new direction!

Lippa: “Pulled” from The Addams Family (continued)

Buß und Reu, Buß und ReuKnirscht das Sündenherz entzwei.Das die Tropfen meiner ZährenAngenehme Spezerei,Treuer Jesu, dir gebären.

Repentance and regret, repentance and regretrips the sinful heart in two. Thus the drops of my tears, desirable spices, are brought to you, loving Jesus.

Bach: “Buß und Reu” from St. Matthew Passion

Acis in Acis and Galatea, which he performed most recently with Ensemble Courant at UNC Chapel Hill. He has created a recital program entitled “Birth of the Lied” with fortepianist Sylvia Berry to perform classical songs with period keyboard instruments, performed recently at the Groton School, New England Conservatory, and Amherst College.

The Handel and Haydn Youth Choruses provides talented young singers in grades 2-12 the opportunity to sing in a chorus, take musicianship classes, perform with professional musicians, and receive private voice instruction.

Collaborative Youth Concerts bring choirs from Boston-area schools together to perform alongside H+H musicians in their home communities and at Symphony Hall.

School Partnerships led by H+H teaching artists bring weekly choral and music education instruction to Boston elementary school students.

See the Education Program in action at handelandhaydn.org/education.

The Handel and Haydn Society’s Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program provides music education for children in communities throughout eastern Massachusetts, reaching thousands of students each year.

ABOUT THE HANDEL AND HAYDN SOCIETY

Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society performs Baroque and Classical music with a freshness, a vitality, and a creativity that inspires all ages. H+H has been captivating audiences for 206 consecutive seasons (the most of any performing arts organization in the United States) speaking to its success at converting new audiences to this extraordinary music, generation after generation.

H+H performed the “Hallelujah” chorus from Handel’s Messiah in its first concert in 1815, gave the American premiere in 1818, and ever since has been both a musical and a civic leader in the Boston community. During the Civil War, H+H gave numerous concerts in support of the Union Army (H+H member Julia Ward Howe wrote “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”) and on January 1, 1863, H+H performed at the Grand Jubilee Concert celebrating the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation. Two years later, H+H performed at the memorial service for Abraham Lincoln.

Today, H+H’s Orchestra and Chorus delight more than 50,000 listeners annually with a nine-week subscription series at Symphony Hall and other leading venues. Through the Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program, H+H supports seven youth choirs of singers in grades 2-12, and provides thousands of complimentary tickets to students and communities throughout Boston, ensuring the joy of music is accessible to all.

H+H’s numerous free community concerts include an annual commemoration of the original 1863 Emancipation Proclamation concert on December 31 of every year, in collaboration with the Museum of African American History.

The artistic director of the Handel and Haydn Society is Harry Christophers, who is also founding artistic director of The Sixteen in London. Under Christophers’s leadership, H+H has released 15 CDs on the Coro label and has toured nationally and internationally.

In all these ways, H+H fulfills its mission to inspire the intellect, touch the heart, elevate the soul, and connect all of us with our shared humanity through transformative experiences with Baroque and Classical music.
