TOPS Established in 1993 and first performing as part of the 20th birthday celebrations of the Sydney Opera House, The Occasional Performing Sinfonia (TOPS) brings together students, teachers, professional musicians and members of other community orchestras to perform challenging orchestral repertoire. TOPS specialises in the large orchestral repertoire of composers such as Mahler, Stravinsky, Richard Strauss, and programs are usually prepared on two rehearsals.

Music of Australian composers, particularly of the younger generation, is high on the agenda in TOPS concerts. Also, opportunity is provided for young and developing conductors to work with the orchestra. Players come from all parts of Sydney, as well as Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains and Central Coast.

The Quartet Born in Sydney, Nina Mestric has enjoyed music from an early age. After perform-ing in choirs during her primary and high school years she completed her BA Music degree, majoring in singing with repertoire including musical theatre, classical and Lieder. After making Port Macquarie home, Nina joined Hastings Choristers’ female ensemble, Cantabile, performing at many concerts and taking on solo parts with her lovely soprano voice. She studies singing with voice teacher Robyn Ryan. Nina is the principal singer in Missa in Angustiis and her considerable talents are evident in this vocally challenging role. Miriam Lattimore has enjoyed singing in various contexts in Port Macquarie including principal roles with Players Theatre and as a chorister and a soloist with Hastings Choristers. She recently joined with Cantorus in the Messiah concerts of Christmas 2008. Miriam has conducted children’s choirs for more than thirty years and more recently adult choirs. She currently directs the Wauchope High School Choir, the Port Macquarie Uniting Church Men’s Choir and the Sing Australia Wauchope Choir. Usually a soprano, Miriam has enjoyed preparing the role of Contralto for Haydn True. Ian Castle is well known for his beautiful baritone voice and his many Players Theatre roles. He will be long remembered for his stunning Pirate King in Pirates of Penzance. He presently teaches Voice in Port Macquarie after training in Vocal Studies under the direction of Janet Delpratt during his university years in Brisbane. John Thompson, a Tenor, has been a resident of Port Macquarie for 40 years, singing as a soloist in many choirs, stage shows and charity performances during that time. He has performed extensively around the Mid North Coast and interstate, but his dedication to choral singing has made him a much loved and valued Life Member of Hastings Choristers.

Mal Hewitt Mal is a graduate of Sydney Conservatorium of Music, majoring in violin and voice. Teaching appoint-ments in Western Sydney High Schools provided the opportunity for him to give many young musicians their first experiences on orchestral and band instruments. His appointment to the Performing Arts Unit of the NSW Department of Education in 1981 marked the beginning of many years as director of State Music Camps, conductor of the Sydney Schools Symphony Orchestra and Musical Director of the Public Schools Concert Committee, His contribution to music education and to the provision of quality performance experiences is widely acknowledged. In the early 1990s, Mal commenced a long association with the International Festival of Youth Orchestras in Banff, Canada, where he has conducted youth orchestras from Britain, Europe, USA, Canada and Australia. Mal maintains a busy schedule of choral and instrumental workshops, music camps and festivals since his retirement in 2005. He continues as Musical Director of The Occasional Performing Sinfonia (TOPS), which he founded in 1993.

Jason Heise Jason began his musical career at the age of eleven with the Kempsey District Silver Band, learning the tenor horn, cornet and euphonium before finally settling on the trumpet. During high school, Jason was a member of the Performing Arts Units Pacific Schools Games Orchestra and The Department of Education Schools Spectacular Orchestra. He was a soloist with the North Coast Camerata Orchestra and toured Europe with the NSW Performing Arts Units All Star Stage Band. Jason received honours for his eighth grade AMEB trumpet exam while he was just 16 and then completed his Bachelor of Music with Honours in 2004 at the University of Newcastle. During this time he was Principal Trumpet of the University of Newcastle Symphony Orchestra and the University of Newcastle brass ensemble. Jason has since studied with many International artists and Australia’s leading trumpeters including Dan Mendelow (Principal Trumpet of the SSO). Jason has performed with the Australian Youth Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Sinfonia, the Sydney Philharmonia Choir Orchestra, and is a casual for the Australian Opera Ballet Orchestra. Last year he was in the final five competitors in the International Trumpet competition at the Melbourne International Festival of Brass. Jason is presently continuing his studies with Dan Mendelow and is Principal Trumpet of the Sydney Symphony Sinfonia for 2009. He is also musical director of the Mid North Coast All Star Stage Band.
