    for the club.

    Congratulations to our

    2011 Officers. I look for-

    ward to a great year!

    November! It is that time

    of year again, when some

    people dream of turkey,

    and our club turns some

    people into turkeys. Yes

    it is Officer Election time.

Pablo once again is Presi-dent, apparently he ran

    unopposed, even though

    Larry Hersh arrived late

    enough to be elected. Be-

    ing from Argentina you

    know someday there will

    be a musical written

    about his time in office.

    Gary is once again Vice

    President. Lets face it,

God forbid Pablo is forcedout like Nixon, we can

    always count on Mr.

    Moore to stand up and

run the club. He has the

    experience. In fact I be-

lieve he has voted in more

    elections than all of us.

    He still has the original

    ballot from his buddy Abe

    Lincolns election.

Randy is doing a good job

    as Treasurer so lets keep

    him. Then again, com-

    pared to our last Treas-

    urer (Mr. Larry Bud

    Hersh) anyone with a

    pulse could of potentially

    handled this position.

    Jeff Brown is the clubs

    new Secretary. He is

quoted as saying, I willshow up for the meetings,

    keep notes, and put to-

    gether a nice newsletter

    Officer Elections Were This Month

    Hobbytown USA ContestOn Saturday, November

    6th, 2010, Hobbytown

    USA in Fort Collins held

its Fall Contest. Therewas a decent turnout, but

    nothing compared to the

    contests of Christmas

    past.

    Still, there were some

    great models on the ta-

    bles. Mr. Ron Johnson

    showed up with a dio-

rama that was, in a word,

    spectacular.

    Randy brought a few Fer-

raris and won a few tro-

    phies.

    Gary Moore entered some

    models, but forgot to tell

    the editor what he

    brought. Remember, he is

    the clubs VP!

    Jeff Brown entered some

    models, and took home a

    few trophies.

All in all a pretty good

    contest. Small, but there

    were some really good

    builds.

It would be nice to see a

    larger turn out for the

    Spring contest at H-

    Town. A contest is a

    great place to recruit new

    members and improve

    your skills.

    This past month I bought

    and started to build

    Tamiyas new 1/48 scale

    Jagdtiger. This release is

    the Fruhe (Early) Produc-

    tion. They left enough

parts in the kit to releasea Mid-Production later

    on.

    The kit goes together very

    well. No real problems. I

    just wish there was a

    metal barrel because that

kit barrel was a pain in

the butt to get clean and

    seam free.

    Tamiya shows three dif-

    ferent paint schemes. All

    in the difficult ambush

    pattern. In my research I

have found this to be ac-

    curate. According to the

    book, Jagdtiger: Opera-

    tional History by An-

drew Devey , the first ten

    Jagdtigers produced were

painted Dunkelgelb, andthe crews were given cans

    of Dunkelgelb, Olivgrun

and Rot Braun to use on

    their tanks.

    Some of these crews left

    their tanks dunkelgelb,

    others used gasoline to

    act as a thinner which

    caused the paint to act

    differently to each indi-

vidual tank. This caused avariation in the colors.

    For example the Olivgrun

    could look almost black

    or pea green depending

    on how much thinner was

    used.

    This caused some ugly

    schemes and according to

    Dewey after September

    1944 the Jagdtigers were

    camouflage painted at the

    factories.

Now that the tank is fin-

    ished with construction, I

    have to decide which

scheme I am going to use.

    Since I own several of

    these I might just make

    this first one straight

    dunkelgelb.

I should have it ready for

    our January meeting.

    from our neighbor.

    I am looking forward to

    it.

    This month I brought a

    Stug IIIB for show and

    tell.

So what is a Stug IIIB?

    A Stug, short for Sturm-

geschutz, is a Germanassault gun from World

    War II. They were origi-

    nally designed as assault

    tanks and were supposed

    to be used for storming

    and demolishing enemy

    fortifications.

    The Stug IIIB was based

    on the Panzer III chassis

    and carried a fixed, for-

    ward firing 75mm howit-

    zer. While good for its

    intended duty of assault-

    ing enemy strongholds,

its short howitzer was nomatch for the enemy

    tanks it encountered.

    Thus the later Stug III

    models (F and G) were

    upgunned to be able to

    penetrate enemy armor,

    and their role switched

    from assault guns to tank

    destroyers.

    The Stug IIIB was the

    most widely produced of

    the early 75mm Stug

    models. They were used

    mainly in the Soviet Un-

    ion, and Eastern Europe.

    What is a Stug IIIB?

    Dioramas: IPMS Competition Handbook

    appropriate individual

    class. That is, armor

    pieces will be subject to

    armor judging criteria

    while figures will be

    evaluated according to

    the figure modeling

    guidelines. As always, the

    basics of construction and

    finishing are of primeimportance. Terrain,

    roadwork, buildings, and

    accessories that set the

    scene of the diorama will

    be evaluated similarly to

    the primary model com-

    ponents. Basic construc-

    tion and finish are once

    again paramount.

    Presentation: The dio-

rama base should com-prise individual elements

    that combine to form a

    realistic and/or plausible

    setting for the primary

    model component(s).

    Each of the elements also

    should be believable in its

    own right and consistent

    with the action or mood

    being depicted. The de-

    gree of imagination and

    inventiveness used to

    pose the main elements

    will factor into the overall

    presentation evaluation.

    The base should provide a

focal point for the sceneand fit or enhance the

story line or mood of the

    diorama. Dioramas with a

    well-defined focal point

    highlighting a simple

    story generally will have a

    stronger presentation

    than those attempting to

    portray an entire battle-

    field.

    (Continued on page 4)

    A diorama is a combina-

    tion of model(s) and a

    believable setting that

tells a story, sets a mood,

    or creates a charged at-

    mosphere. In addition to

    evaluating the modeling

    of a diorama's individual

    elements, the judges will

consider the strength ofthe diorama's story line

    or mood and the overall

    presentation of the dio-

    rama. These three factors

    are equally important.

    Dioramas with superbly

    modeled components but

    a weak story line and

    presentation will almost

    certainly lose to a dio-

    rama with well-modeled

    components and strongstory and presentation.

    Model Components: The

    individual model compo-

nents of a diorama will be

    judged according to the

    criteria specified in the

    A diorama

    is a

    combination

    of models

    and a

    believable

    setting that

    tells a story,

    sets a mood,

    or creates a

    charged

    atmosphere.

    Editor: Jeffrey Brown

    [email protected]

Our club has plastic modelers from Northern Colo-rado,mainly from the Fort Collins, Loveland, Long-mont area. We also have a few members from Wyo-ming.

We build scale and plastic models of armor, airplanes,

vehicles, shipsand anything else that we feel like isworth a try.

Check out our meeting schedule and feel free to drop

    by our next meeting!

Check out the website for club information.

    High Plains Modelers

can lift a diorama out of the

    ordinary.

    Story Line, Mood, Atmos-

    phere: This element is what

    separates the diorama from

models merely set on a base.

    A simple derelict vehicle

rusting away in a field can

set a mood as well as, or

    better than, a complete rec-

reation of the Battle of Wa-

    terloo. The story, mood, or

    atmosphere created by the

diorama should be obvious;the judges shouldn't have to

strain to see it. Stories can

    incorporate historical or

    even humorous aspects.

    Here again, imagination and

    inventiveness in telling the

    story or setting the mood
