High Fructose Corn Syrup; a cause of Obesity?
HealthHas become a growing concern in the
last decadeIs displayed everywhere: newspapers,
magazines, and televisionConstant debates over what is healthy
and what is not; and these ideas seem to constantly change.
So how do you know which was is the healthy way? RESEACH IT!
Topic of ChoiceHigh Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) vs Natural Cane Suger
I believe that HFCS is not the healthy option, and that it is aiding to the causation of obesity in our society.
HFCS vs Cane SugarCane Sugar HFCS
Naturally produced from sugar cane.
Sugar Cane plants have nutrients and benefits
The most common sweetener used across the world
Lab created from corn.
Corn has very little nutritional value.
Only used in the United States, is illegal is every other country.
High Fructose Corn SyrupThe website defines HFCS as “composed of either 42
percent or 55 percent fructose, with the remaining sugars being primarily glucose and higher sugars”.

Fructose does not create insulin secretion or increase to production of leptons. “Because insulin and lepton act as key afferent signals in the regulation of food intake and body weight, this suggests that dietary fructose may contribute to increased energy intake and weight gain.”(Bray, Nielson, Popkin)
SurveyI conducted a survey of 25 people
acquiring their opinion of HFCS compared to Natural Cane Sugar.
The results showed that a high percentage of people preferred natural sugar to HFCS.
Not only did they prefer natural sugar, 80% believed that HFCS was aiding in the causation of obesity.
Result?Due to a higher demand of
more natural sweeteners companies such as Pepsi, Hunts, and Wheat Tins have started producing products made with Cane Sugar.
Hopefully these companies will set an example, and spark a common theme that other companies catch onto.
Pepsi released their “throwback” beverage which is made with Cane Sugar.
Major Figures such as Michelle Obama, have started to take action and give speeches relating to the negative effects of HFCS.
ReactionThe manufactures of HFCS have no
completely ignored the decline in demand of HFCS.
They feel that using the term “syrup” in their product is the causation of the negative feeling associated with HFCS
Their solution? CHANGE THE NAME! The name would be change to Corn Sugar.
However, I found no source in which these manufactures actually addressed the health concerns.
ConclusionThere is a growing concern of the obesity
rate in America. As a response, more and more companies are
beginning to switch over to making products that contain natural sweeteners.
HFCS manufactures, instead of addressing the problems are undermining the intelligance of society by simply suggesting a name change to calm the negative view of their product.
Know the Facts As a society, we should be
concerned of this growing obesity rate and began to take action against it.
