High Capacity Cold Planers

The key goal for road maintenance is to provide the best road con-

ditions for safe and comfortable driving in all weather.

Cold planers are designed to remove asphalt and concrete pave-

ment in layers by a rotating milling drum. The milled material may

be transported via conveyor on a truck for further recycling proc-

esses, spread on-site or stockpiled in the rear for future application.

The cold milling operation has proven to be the most effective and

economic process for road maintenance.

The legendary Dynapac PL 2000, developed in 1978,was a worldwide pioneering example of the modern cold planer. Outstanding features included the frontloading and levelling systems combined with the unit’s simple control and cost effectiveness. The large number of PL 2000 planers still in service is a solid testimony to the excellent reliability and long service life of that early design.

The PL 2000 S is the first in a new generation of large, high-performance planers, which not only meet the requirements of planing but also meet thehighest standards of reliability,cost-effectiveness and environmental safety. It is based on tried and tested concepts, on new and innovative technical engineering solutions and onleading edge know-how.

Dynapac Cold Planers - one of a kind

The cutting drum

The cutting drum, specially designed for the Dynapac PL 2000 S, features a cutting width of approx. 80 inches (PL 2100 S, cut-ting width approx. 83 inches) at its maximum cutting depth of approx. 12 inches. Its standard equipment includes a quick-change tool- holder system. Optional fine milling drums are available. Dynapac has placed particular emphasis on making the changeover from a standard to precision cutting drum a simple, fast procedure. This means that the Dynapac High Capacity Planer can be ready for-operation on a different project in 2 hours.

The engine

The large Cummins Engine in-line 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with intercooler delivers 448 kW / 600 hp at 2100 rpm. Equipped with fully electronic engine manage-ment, the Cummins QSX 15 fully complies with the forth-coming US emission limit values defined in EPA / CARB Tier 3 and with the European EU 3A standard.Extensive monitoring functions deliver high levels of opera-tional reliability with low levels of fuel consumption. A fully-automatic overload control system protects the engine and ensures that optimum torque is always being delivered to the cutting drum.

THE nEW DynAPAC HIGH CAPACITy COLD PLAnERS

The key developmental objectives of the new generation of Dynapac planers arose fromincreasingly demanding customer requirements on performance rating, combined withimproved cost-effectiveness. Dynapac drew on its experience from the early days of modern cold planer construction tomeet the latest requirements for the new Dynapac large planer. These vehicles are capable ofremoving asphalt and concrete across a profiling width of approx. 80/83 inches at a maximumcutting depth of approximately 12 inches. Hydrostatically driven by four steered track drives,the planers are equipped with a front discharge conveyor system and a cutting drum drivenmechanically by powered belts. Practical standard equipment and a range of optionscombined to make your PL 2000 LS/PL 2000 S/PL 2100 S one of the most capable in the moderngeneration of cold planers.

The operator’s control station

The PL 2000 S is operated by two joysticks (driving and conveyor belt functions) and a clearly laid out control and monitoring panel. Automated sequential processes, e.g. for the conveyor belts and water-spraying system, ensure that operators can focus on the planing opera-tion and use less quantities of water and fuel. This also reduces conveyor belt wear. A comprehensive diagnostic system simplifies service and maintenance work. The operating panel can be locked under a durable cover or can be moved, and locked into, the operator’s con-trol station.As an alternative to the PLC-dashboard Dynapac now offers the machines with a conventional electric system with relais control system.

The propulsion system

The propulsion system consists of four crawlers equipped with durable polyurethane track pads. For optimum traction without any throttle loss, the fully tracked drive system has electro-proportional adjustment motors integrated in each crawler unit and is equipped with a standard anti-slip control (ASC). The speed in work and drive modes is infinitely variable and four integrated spring accumulator brakes perform the role of a park-ing brake. Optimum maneuverability is provided by the 4-track steering system with 4 pre-selectable steering variations: front only, rear only, coordinated front and rear and crab steering mode. An automatic forward setting of front and rear crawlers makes it easier for the operator to position the Dynapac planers.

CHARACTERISTICS

The levelling systemAn electronic feedback control system controls the cutting depth allowing the Dynapac planer to compensate for uneven areas of ground and to comply with preset nominal values. This system has two digital feedback controllers with LC display unit for simple input of nominal and actual value, receives its input from two cable tension sensors connected to the side boards. The standard interface also offers scope for a slope sensor connection, an Ultra-sonic Ski, a rotary arm sensor and a laser receiver or the Multiplex plus system.

The water spraying systemThe spray nozzles deliver water at a high pressure to cool the drum, clean the bits and reduce dust levels. This results in reduced mechanical wear to bit tips and reduced water consumption. The 977 gallons aluminium water tank contains enough water for a long period of operation. The tank can be filled using C-tubes at either the front or the back, making continuous operation pos-sible. A hydraulically operated filling pump is also available as an option.

The conveyor belt systemOut feed of the planing material is performed by a generously proportioned, two-stage, covered front-loading belt system. The speeds of both conveyor belts are fully adjustable for forward and reverse directions of travel. Any build-up of material in the con-veyor belt system is easily dealt with. The discharge conveyor has hydraulic height adjustment and can be swivelled through 45° to either side to contend with varying construction site conditions. A folding conveyor belt is available as an optional extra.

The cutting drum transmissionThe generously proportioned cutting drum transmission com-bined with a high strength V-belt, self-adjusting belt tensioner and a two-stage planetary gearbox ensures power is directly delivered to the bit tips. The moldboard and sideboards have a hydraulic lift facility as standard equipment. naturally enough, the moldboard can be positioned above the planing level during the milling operation in order to leave planing material in the trench.

The side control panelsFour control panels on the left and right sides of the machine make it possible to monitor and control the planing operation from ground level as well as from operator’s platform. The keypad, backlit for operation in the dark, is equipped with icons and LEDs to make operation simple and visible. The operating panels can also be locked to protect against vandalism.

Additional optionsThe optional weatherproof canopy is just one example from a long list of options. The toolholder systemThe Dynapac High Capacity Cold Planers comes standard with the well proven, quick-change tool holder system Kennametal KPF 303. The forward profile design of the sleeves is designed for a long life, even under toughest milling conditions. If tool holder replacement on the job site is necessary, changing the bolt-less system is easily done. Welding or thread re-cut is not necessary. The matching taper system ensures no movement between the base and the sleeve. Making it the simplest and most economical quick-change system for road milling machines.

The drum designBased on years of milling experience, the variance of the drum, the road milling pattern and the breakout per tool is optimized by a drum-lacing program. This ensures lowest drum vibration with accurate results. A better material flow in the beginning of the spi-rals additionally reduces the wear on the end ring holders. The new stepped end ring design is the result of suggestions from milling contractors, requiring smooth transition when matching cutting lanes and a soft cut pattern at the edge.

Wear partsReducing maintenance costs of cold planers and customer feed-back were the cause for Dynapac to analyse the wear and tear caused by the grinding of milled material inside the cutter hous-ing. Consequently, areas with a high wearing effect are equipped with replaceable wear plates made of Hardox for example, in the side radius of the milling drum.
