Parent and Caregivers Last Wednesday, the council held its AGM and we thank those parents and staff for attending. At this meeting, we farewelled Kym Thomas. Kym has been an active member of our Council for a number of years and our chair for the past three years. I wish to thank him sincerely for his contribution to Henley. He has been a strong supporter of the school and public education, always willing to give his ‘free time’ to attend training and information sessions. He has always been keen to represent the school community in conversations and has always passed on concerns and provided critical feedback when required. His role in fundraising has been really appreciated, particularly the Bunnings BBQ. We also need to farewell Sue Hawkins and Deb Smith who have been ever reliable and supportive. Jurgen Praekelt was elected as chair for the next 12 months , with Paul Marcus being elected to the position of Deputy Chair. Rohan Smith will be Treasurer and chair the Finance Committee while Sonia Searles continues as Secretary. Laura Langton and Peter van Dijk have agreed to be on the Uniform Committee. The first council meeting in Term 2 will be at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, May 25. Any new members are welcome to attend. The finance meeting will commence at 6:00 pm.

In Week 7 of Term 1 we welcomed 14 students and 2 teachers, Ms Nayumi Mizukami and Ms Atsuko Nomi, from Kofu Daiichi High School in Japan. Given the devastating events in Japan just prior to their arrival, this was a particularly difficult time for our visitors to be away from home. The Kofu students were eager to be involved in all activities, especially the surfing where they impressed instructors with their tireless enthusiasm. They must all be commended on having a fabulous ‘I’ll give it a go’ attitude. I would like to convey a special thank you to the many people who helped make the week such success;
The homestay families as the experience of living in a home environment is one of the most memorable and rewarding parts of being on an overseas study tour.
The staff for welcoming the students into your classes to experience and observe the diverse offerings at HHS. Student buddies who were keen to be involved and spent time engaging with our visitors in class and socially.
Thank you to all involved and for making first time experiences possible, which ultimately influence lives, forms long lasting memories and create long time friends.

On behalf of the Henley High School students we would like to farewell the Kofu students as they are leaving to go back to Japan tomorrow morning.
Throughout this eventful week, the Kofu students experienced an Australian lifestyle doing activities such as surfing at Pt Noarlunga, playing football, Aboriginal painting and visiting the Adelaide Zoo where they met the pandas and saw many other animals.
They spent a day with their homestay families before coming to school on the Tuesday which was a great opportunity for them to get to know their families and to see places in and around Adelaide.
This has been a great experience, not only for the Kofu students but also for the Henley High School students who have been great buddies and friends all week.
It’s going to be hard to say goodbye, but we would like to thank Kofu Daiichi High School for sending some wonderful students and teachers to Henley High School.
We would like to thank all of the people who made this week so successful.
Thank You Hollie Bird and Marlee-Rose Chitty

Senior School News
For all Senior School Parents: Distribution of reports is on Friday 15th April and Parent Teacher Evening is on 10th May
Tuesday of Week 2. It is imperative that parents organize interview times with teachers if their son/daughter has achieved a D or E. It is strongly recommended that with a C grade parents also meet with the subject teacher. With an A or B, unless there are concerns, then a parent/teacher interview is not necessarily required. HHS does provide a varied and challenging curriculum for all senior students as well as diverse co curricula activities and we really ask parents to encourage students to be involved as this will enhance their enjoyment and engagement in school. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any queries.
Felicity O’Brien, Assistant Principal (Senior School)
This term the Yr 12
Manager, Nick McNamara and teachers have been pleased with the work and commitment students have already made to their learning as most students have settled into a routine of attendance, work and study. However, it is absolutely imperative that students use the two week holiday at Easter to revise and study the work completed in Term 1 so a study program needs to be part of your discussions with your son or daughter at the end of term. In addition, many teachers have given students assignments that they expect to be worked on and/or completed during this time. There is time for rest and relaxation but this is only after some study! Also, it is strongly advised that students should not be working more than 12 hours per week in paid employment so that they focus on their studies. Many students may be preoccupied with Formal arrangements but they MUST NOT forget that their studies are number 1 priority at this time of the year.
Yr 12 Formal payments needed to be completed by 13th April and all students and partners were required to complete a Code of Conduct form on payment to ensure that everyone understands the behaviour expectations at this school event. It is really important that parents are fully informed of their son/ daughter’s plans after the Formal ends at 11pm and that students are reminded about responsible behaviour at all times. This is reinforced at school.
The Yr 11 Manager, Mr Keep, has generally been pleased with the attitude and work ethic of most students. It is again important to clarify the expectation of Yr 11 students is that they must be at school at all times unless they have permission to attend VET courses or to study at home . This is to assist them to develop a focus on developing study habits in preparation for their Yr 12 studies when they are able to study at home. Some students who are completing a Yr 12 subject have negotiated with me to study at home on a study line. A significant concern at this time of the year is Yr 11 students coming late to classes. Can you please ensure that your son/ daughter arrives by 8: 35am on Mondays and 8:45am Tuesday – Friday. If students have a job and arrive late then they more than likely will be dismissed. Arriving on time is an important behaviour which we want to reinforce so your help will be appreciated.
The Yr 10 Manager, Mr Graham Brooks is pleased that the Year 10 students have also settled into the school routine focusing on their subject learning as well as being willing to participate in a number of co curricula activities. Work Experience week is from 23rd – 27th May (Week 4). This is a significant week for all Year 10’s. All students SHOULD HAVE handed in their Work Experience form. The last day to do so was Friday 25th March so that it can be approved by the Principal. Can you please check with your son/daughter that their Work Experience has been finalised and the form has been returned? If there are concerns please contact Mr Brooks ASAP.

LOST PROPERTY If a student looses any item or clothing the place to inquire is Student Services. Last year there were over 30 green windcheater tops, lots of single shoes, socks etc in Lost Property! The wind-cheater tops have been washed and can be claimed. Parents and students need to ensure that all property is marked so that staff can return the items to the students.

The connection between cars and eggs is not obvious but the Egg Drop is one of the activities being used to teach Road Science to Year 10 students this year. Students are asked to design, in groups, a small container to protect an egg being dropped from various heights. This activity forms the basis for discussions on safety features in cars.
A range of other teaching activities are also used to inform students about car safety features and other aspects of road science. In another task, students are asked to make plasticine crash test dummies and test safety features such as seat belts, crumple zones and air bags, by performing experiments which simulate collisions. Accelerometers and data loggers are used to analyse these collisions. These devices are similar to the ones which are used by the motor industry to collect data from full sized crash test dummies in real cars.
A computer simulation program is used to investigate the effects of factors such as speed, vehicle size and road and tyre condition on stopping distance. This program allows students to experiment with these variables and find out for themselves what effect they have.
These activities represent a fundamental change in the way that this topic, and science in general, is being taught. Much of this has been made possible by the rapid increase in the use of computer based technology in the school.
One group of year 10 students constructed a web page to record their work. This website can be viewed via the following link: www.roadsafetyyear10.blogspot.com

Aboriginal Education
As a follow on from last newsletter’s article where the Aboriginal Education Team held a function for the students attending Henley during Week 3, we held a function not only for the Aboriginal students but also their parents, caregivers and community members. It was decided to have a breakfast to try and tap in to the adults as they dropped their students off to school. We were hopeful that there would be a great response. However, our numbers were down on our high expectations. Those that came had a great breaky of ham and cheese croissants, scones, fruit and a selection of hot or cold drinks. Our main theme was to encourage communication. So if you could not make this breakfast, please keep an eye out for our function next term and maybe bring a friend to help make yourself feel more comfortable. If you need any information, please contact anyone on the team – Mark Blackman, Kay Gillett, Deb Carey, Paul Whaley, Leigh Whitford or Natasha Vasiliadis on 83557000.

Whole School Education
Students will receive their TFN via a notification letter sent to their postal address within 28 days of the application being received by the ATO. For any issues, please telephone the school on 8355 7000 and ask for Kay Gillett. I normally send off all of the tax file forms on a Friday afternoon unless there is an urgent case or there is a large number coming through in any week.
Kay Gillett Teacher administering Tax File Forms
The Australian Tax Office, or ATO, with the cooperation of schools, offers students aged 13 years of over the opportunity to apply for a tax file number (TFN) through the school. This is a voluntary program and makes it easier for students to obtain a TFN. Students need a TFN for employment, applying for Centrelink benefits, opening a bank account or deferring university fees. Applying for a TFN through the school is easier because students do not need to show identifying documentation to the ATO. The application form is available from the school Student Services or Ms Gillett’s office – 129) and students can complete it at home. The form requires information such as the student’s name, address and date of birth. Students also need to provide the following information:
Students born in Australia will need to provide their- Birth certificate number, state of issue
and year of registration OR Australian passport number and date of
issue Students born overseas will need to provide their Overseas passport number and country
of issue OR Australian citizenship certificate
number and date of issue OR Australian passport number and date of
issue It is important that the application form is completed correctly and in full and signed by the student. All information provided on the application will remain confidential.
The school will certify the application form by cross-checking again the information held on their records. Students are not required to show identifying documentation to the school or ATO.

Sports News
After convincingly winning the boys and girls section of “B” grade last year, Henley’s swim team were promoted to “A” grade of the Secondary School Sport South Australia Swimming Championships for 2011. On Wednesday March 9th from 6.30pm to 9.00pm our team gathered at Adelaide Aquatics Centre to take on all the private school “heavies” as the only public school in “A” grade. Henley had a good warm up for their competitors and were well prepared when events commenced at 7.00pm. The evening started positively with several Henley swimmers featuring in podium finishes in butterfly and backstroke age group races, but as the night progressed our lack of depth of talent against private schools with their own pool facilities started to show. Despite this “handicap”, Henley’s swimmers still continued to do their best and many of them swam Personal Bests working to keep Henley in the points race. The breaststroke and freestyle events gave us some further successes, but by the time relays were held, the boys were fighting to avoid last place while the girls looked like taking 5th place out of 8 schools. All Henley team members did the school very proud with their talent, team spirit and sportsmanship and individual and relay swimmers won 31 gold, silver or bronze medals for Henley in the 78 races contested. It was pleasing to see the many parents who were there to support the team and special thanks must go to those who kindly assisted with timekeeping duties. Thank you also to Ms Tess Clarke who ably assisted me with team management on the night.

SPORTS DAY 2011
Sports Day 2011 dawned on Tuesday March 15th to a forecast of fine and warm conditions and 24 degrees, ideal for a big day of athletic activities. As in other years, PE staff and other staff helpers met at Henley High at 6.00am to set up and several cars and trailers were loaded up with shade tents, track & field equipment, trestles and chairs, BBQ’s, rubbish bins, drink containers and assorted gear to take down to Henley Little Athletics Oval for the Sports Day ahead. Once down at the track staff worked like a well drilled team erecting shade structures, marking out throwing areas, putting up bunting rope and making the track and field event areas safe and athlete friendly for the student group about to descend on the oval at 8.40 am.
After a quick roll call in Care/Mentor Groups, Mr Hank spoke to the assembled House teams and went through some ‘housekeeping’ issues and alerted students to the need for sensible ‘sun smart’ behaviour and hydrating throughout the day. The SSP Dance class provided a highlight with their cheerleader dance performance to open the Sports Day. All but a handful of the students attending were brightly dressed in their House colours and the oval was a sea of red, blue, green and gold as large numbers of competitors were sent out to be marshalled at various events.
Athletes from Oliphant, Mitchell, Mawson & Florey Houses were abundant in most track, field and novelty events and the morning passed very quickly. Florey’s concerted effort to outnumber the other Houses in as many events as possible resulted in them taking a considerable lead in the points tally as the day progressed to Hurdles and then to the Relays. As had been the case all day, colourful participants represented their Houses enthusiastically in the concluding 4 x 100m relays. At the closing assembly, after a quick “emu parade” to clean up any litter, Florey House was declared the
runaway winners from Mawson, with a gallant Oliphant forcing out Mitchell for third place.
Many thanks to all the Henley staff who officiated so professionally in their rostered duties and those who helped in the set up and pack up operation.
Well done also to Year 12 student Zac Davies who provided expert First Aid assistance for the whole day. Finally, a big vote of thanks to all students who supported the Sports Day Carnival so well with their participation and colour displays. Congratulations to the following individual winners who were announced at the final House gathering and will be presented with medallions at a future assembly.

Henley was again well represented in this year’s SSSSA State Tennis Championships. The competition appeared to be much stronger than in previous years and all the players representing Henley High School did well - with many reaching quarter finals or better.
Asyraf Azhar was a stand out –playing exceptional tennis to win the Open Boys division and James Murray also deserves individual recognition for finishing runner up in the Year 8 Consolation Final.
