Introduction. Iamatruebelieverinthenotionthatknowledgeispower.Inmystudio,Itaketimetoeducatemy clients on the science behind my systems and methods. When they understand WHY Irecommend a particular program, they achieve better results and stick to it. So in this nextsection,Iamgoingtoreviewandexpanduponsomeofthethingsyouheardinmyvideo.I’mnot going to get too technical or scientific. I’ll provide youwith enough information so thatwhatyouareabouttodooverthenext28daysandhopefullybeyondwillmakesense.

It’s A Hormonal Thing The number one complaint of my clients who are over 40 is that their midsections areexpandingat analarming rateand they can’t control itnomatterwhat theydo. The secondcomplaint isdroppingenergy levels,andthethird is lackof tone.There isa fourthcomplaintthatnotmanyofmyclientsexpress,but it is thereforalmosteveryoneofthem,andthat isdecliningself-esteem.

Sex Hormones. Estrogen Therearemanykindsof estrogensproducedby thebody,however the threemainonesareEstrone, Estradial and Estriol? Researchers have foundover 400 functions of estrogen in thefemale body. Did you know that? In our discussion today, we will talk about two of theseestrogens,EstradiolandEstrone.

§ Estradiol isproducedandsecretedprimarilybytheovariesandisthestrongestofthenaturallyproducedestrogens in thebody.Estradiol is theprimaryestrogen inwomenbetween puberty andmenopause and is responsible for making her breasts grow atpuberty,regulatingreproductivecycles,maintainingreproductivetissueandpregnancyand regulating progesterone levels. It strengthens bones, skin and hair, and can helplessen the fine lines thatoccuraround theeyesandmouthaswegetolder.Estradiolalso raises serotonin levelswhich iswhywomen feel calmer andmore focusedwhentheyhavehadenoughestradiol.

§ Estrone is a much weaker estrogen hormone than estradiol. It is produced in smallamountsbythe liver,andguesswhatelse…fattissue.Yes, it is typicallyproducedandderived by the body by special belly fat cells. As the ovaries age and menopauseapproaches, the production of estradiol decreases, and in an attempt to restorehormonal balance, the body strives to add belly fat, which is a reliable producer ofestrone. Large quantities of estrone are required to do the job of a small amount ofestradiol. Themorebelly fat youhave, themoreestrone youproduce! Then, as yourbodyfatcompositionincreases,yourleanmuscledecreasesandyourmetabolismslows.Plus, your daily caloric requirements decrease with age. It’s no wonder the averagewomangains12poundsduringmenopause.1

Progesterone Itisconsideredthebody’sbalancing“feelgood”hormoneanditsprimaryfunctionforwomenis its role in thickening the lining of the uterus eachmonth so that the endometrial lining ispreparedtoreceiveandnourishafertilizedegg.Itisaveryimportanthormoneinthebodyasitistheprecursorandbuildingblockofotherhormonesincludingcortisol.

Progesterone isusually the firsthormonetobegin todecline inperimenopause.Manyof theearlysymptomsthatwomenfeelareduetoprogesteronelevelsthataretoolow,inrelationtotheirlevelsofestrogen.Thisstateofalowprogesterone-to-estrogenratioisalsoreferredtoas“estrogendominance.”Someofthesymptomsthatwomensufferwhenprogesteronedeclinesinclude:

Stress Hormones. Cortisol It isyourbody’sprimarystresshormone.Sowhenyouareunderstress,thisisreleasedalongwithadrenaline.Adrenalinegivesusaninstantsurgeofenergytodealwithastressfulsituation.It doesn’t hang around too long though. On the other hand, cortisol lurks around trying toreplenishthebodyofenergyafterthestresshaspassed.Itcanremainelevatedincreasingyourappetite. Not only does it stimulate your appetite, but an appetite for highly paletable foodwithsugar, fatandsalt.Cortisolmobilizesenergybytapping intothebody’sfatstores. Itcanmovefatfromhealthierareaslikeyourhips,andmoveittoyourbelly,whichhasmorecortisolreceptors.Intheprocess,itturnsoncehealthyperipheralfatintounhealthyvisceralfat(thefatin your abdomen that surrounds your organs.) Cortisol likes ugly and dangerous belly fatbecauseitisawonderfulproducerofaspecialenzymethatgivesitlife.Notonlydoescortisoldirectly affect the amount of fat storage (particularly belly fat/visceral fat) you will have, itactuallyhasanimpactonthesizeofthefatcellsinstressedwomen.Biggerisbetter.Thisbellyfatthenleadstomorecortisolbecauseithashigherconcentrationsofanenzymethatconvertsinactive cortisone to active cortisol. The more belly fat you have the more cortisol will beconvertedbytheseenzymes,aviciouscyclecreatedbyvisceralfat!

Adrenaline Isa stresshormone that is released in thebodyofapersonwho is feelinga strongemotion(such as excitement, fear, or anger) and that causes the heart to beat faster and gives thepersonmore energy. Adrenaline gives us an instant surge of energy to dealwith a stressfulmatterathand.

Happy Hormones. Endorphins Blockpainandare responsible forour feelingsofpleasureoreuphoria. They triggerpositivefeelingsinthebodyandareournaturalpainandstressfighters.Peoplewhoexerciseregularlyhavehigherthanusualamountsofendorphins.

Dopamine Drives our brain’s reward system. Dopamine is associated with the 'pleasure system' of thebrain, providing feelings of enjoyment and reinforcement tomotivate us to do, or continuedoing,certainactivities.

Seratonin The“Mood-Booster”Hormone. It iskeytomoodregulation;painperception;gastrointestinalfunction, including perception of hunger/appetite and satiety; sleep; and other physicalfunctions.WebMD,MedicalNewsToday

Oxytocin AKA“TheLoveHormone.”Thishelpsyourelaxandreducecortisollevels.It’salsoreferredtoasthehughormone,cuddlechemical,moralmolecule,andtheblisshormoneduetoitseffectsonbehavior,includingitsroleinloveandinfemalereproductivefunctions.Brainoxytocinhasananti-anxiety(anxiolytic)effectandreducesstress.

The Hormonal Tug Of War & “Compounding Belly Fat”. Nowthatyouunderstandwhatthethreerelevanthormonefamiliesare,let’srevealhowtheyarecausingproblemsforyou.

Menopause…that’ssomethingthathappenswhenyou“getold”,yourperiodstopsandyougetfat.Youdevelopinsomnia,areburdenedwithhotflashesforyears(whenyousuddenlyfeellikeyouaremeltingfromthe insideout),startsproutingdarkhairsonyourfaceand losehaironyourhead,havenosexdriveand,and,and.It’sjustthewayitis,right?Thefactofthematteristhat all of this is very true. These things canandwill happen toadifferentdegree for everywoman,andit’squitecomplicated.Buttheothertruthisthatyouareincontrolandcandoallsortsofthingstofightbackand/orbeproactiveTODAY.

ThereisaconceptthatIcall“compoundingbellyfat.”Thinkofcompoundinginterestinyoursavingsaccount.Compoundinterestismoneybuildingonmoney.Itkeepsbuildinguponitselfovertime,expandingandgrowingexponentially.

There are 4 major contributing factors that will encourage and compound abdominal fatstorageinmidlifewomen,estrogendeclineandcortisolrise.

1. LowProgesteroneLevels:EstrogenDominanceOccurs.

2. Swapping Estrogen Types: Estradiol decline/Estrone increase during peri-menopauseandmenopause.

3. HighCortisolLevels:duetochronicstress,worry,nutritionandexerciseimbalances.

4. Adrenalfatigue.

Compounding Factor #1: Declining Progesterone Asearlyastheageof35,awoman’ssexhormonelevelscanbegintochange.Aswediscussedearlier, progesterone is actually the first hormone to change. Progesterone is like a controlvalveforestrogen.This“balancinghormone”as itdecreasescancreateEstrogenDominance.Estrogendominance isa termthatdescribesaconditionwhereawomancanhavedeficient,normal or excessive estrogen, but has little or no progesterone to balance its effects in thebody.Evenawomanwithlowestrogenlevelscanhaveestrogendominancesymptomsifshedoesn'thaveenoughprogesterone.

Compounding Factor #2: Swapping Estrone For Estradiol Asyourbrainrecognizesthatyouaremovingoutofyourchildbearingyears,ittellsyourbodythat it no longer needs all of that estradiol. When estradiol declines the body still needsestrogen, thereforeestroneproduction increases.Belly Fat cells areestrone factories, so thebodywantstostorebellyfatsoitcanpumpoutmoreestrone.

Sohere’swherestresscomesintothepicture.Themorestressyouhave,themorecortisolyouproduce.Followthiscarefullynow.

ProgesteroneisthebuildingblockofmanyotherhormonesincludingcortisolANDestrogen.Sowhenyourbodyisunderstress,theadrenalsarecalledupontopumpoutcortisol.Yourbody“steals” any available progesterone to manufacture cortisol leaving and creating a state ofestrogendominance.

Additionally, estrogen is an insulin sensitizing hormone and helps control the negative fatstoring effects of cortisol. Progesterone works together with estrogen in controlling this

negative impact of cortisol as well. So if your progesterone is being used to manufacturecortisol,howcanitworkwithestrogentocontrolit?

Doyouseethebadsituationthisiscreating?Canyouseethisviciouscycle?

These factors on their own will encourage fat storage. But when these three factors existtogether there is state of compounding fat. Just like compounding interestwhereas interestbuildsoninterest,thisisastateoffatbuildingonfat.

Compounding Factor #4: Adrenal Fatigue Thisisanentiresubjectonit’sown,butimportanttotouchonhere.Chronicstressisreallybadfor the adrenals. Your adrenal glands produce all the hormones we have been discussingincluding thehappyhormonedopamine. Initially, thestresswill result inchronicallyelevatedcortisol levels, resulting in weight gain (especially around the midsection), blood sugarimbalances, thinning skin, muscle wasting, memory loss, high blood pressure, dizziness, hotflashes,nightsweats,andexcessivefacialhair.
