ECONOMIC STRUCTURE Hessen’s 100 largest companies

6

The sector analysis demonstrates a clear emphasis on the industry sector in which 35 percent of the Hessian workforce is employed. Out of the five largest employers four are logistic companies: Lufthansa, Deutsche Bahn, Fraport and Deutsche Post. Hessen‘s known financial services industry is the state’s third largest sector with 15 percent of all jobs listed in the ranking.

Nearly half a million people (489,000) work for the 100 largest companies which compromise approximately 15 percent of all employees in Hessen. Lufthansa German Airlines alone employs 37,400 people, clearly making it the company with the largest staff in Hessen. The ranking shows that the ten biggest enterprises already make up 200,000 jobs.

Import: Growing Importance of the Foreign Trade with Asia

In the meantime, China has become Hessen’s third most important foreign trade partner with a further increasing trend. Despite the high growth rates in international trade with Asia and America the majority of Hessian foreign trade still takes place with trade partners in Europe.

In 2013, more than 64 percent of all exports went to Europe and over 66 percent of Hessen’s exports came from European countries. The imports from the Eurozone slightly increased in 2013 compared to the previous years and reached a volume of 28.7 billion EUR. Imports from countries which are not part of the Eurozone decreased by 5.9 percent.
