Transcript of Hervey Bay Anglican Parish Weekly News 20...
How ashamed the disciples must have been when Jesus overheard them arguing about who among them was the greatest! But aren’t we like the disciples? We compare ourselves with others and desire their praise. The appetite for glory and greatness seems to be inbred in us. Who doesn't cherish the ambition to be "somebody" whom others admire rather than a "nobody"? Even the psalms speak about the glory God has destined for us. You have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor (Psalm 8:5). Jesus made a dramatic gesture by embracing a child to show his disciples who really is the greatest in the kingdom of God. What can a little child possibly teach us about greatness? Children in the ancient world had no rights, position, or privileges of their own. They were socially at the "bottom of the rung" and at the service of their parents, much like the household staff and domestic servants. What is the significance of Jesus' gesture? Jesus elevated a little child in the presence of his disciples by placing the child in a privileged position of honour. It is customary, even today, to seat the guest of honour at the right side of the host. Who is the greatest in God's kingdom? The one who is humble and lowly of heart – who instead of asserting their rights willingly empty themselves of pride and self-seeking glory by taking the lowly position of a servant or child.
Lord Jesus, by your cross you have redeemed the world and revealed your glory and triumph over sin and death.
May I never fail to see your glory and victory in the cross. Help me to conform my life to your will and to follow in your way of holiness.

Eternal Father, You have joined us in this community of faith. We thank you for the love and fellowship we share and the many blessings you have given us. Yet we ask that you not let us grow complacent or cling too tightly to what we have. Inspire us to use our resources and talents generously on behalf of others. Fill our hearts with tolerance that we may embrace all people and accept their differing beliefs and opinions. Teach us respect for your earth and compassion for all living things. Help us to raise children who are strong in faith and kind in spirit. In times of danger and uncertainty, protect and comfort us. Strengthen us when we are weak, and forgive us when we fail you. Above all, help us always to keep you in our minds and to love and serve you with our whole hearts. Amen.

Hospital Visitors
As part of our upgrading of Pastoral Care provision in the parish, we are keen to recruit parishioners who would be willing to be part of a hospital visitation team.
What is envisaged is that a group of people would be available to provide a social visit to parishioners who find themselves as patients in the local hospitals.
Training will be provided.
If you are interested in becoming a part of this ministry, please contact the parish office (4124 1499) and leave your name and contact details.
This week, we bid a fond farewell to
our tireless workers, Bev & Ray
Sommers as they head back to
Victoria to live. A big thank you for
all they have done, devoting their
time to many ministries within and around the
parish. We will miss you both.
