HVJ Class of 2016
PLEASE NOTE! • We plan to cover a large amount of important
information tonight. We need to keep on task to be sure the presentation doesn’t take too much of your time.
• We encourage you to write down any questions you may have during the presentation – but PLEASE hold all questions until the end.
• Most likely, we will answer your questions as the presentation moves forward.
• We will have a brief Q & A session when we are finished. Hopefully you will already have your question(s) answered before we get to the end!
Clean up your “Electronic Reputation”
• Is there an old video on YouTube that you wouldn’t want your new boss to see? What have you posted about others that you now regret? Even that rum punch recipe you saved on Pinterest can set the wrong tone.
• Most colleges, tech schools, military and employers now “check out” all potential candidates and their Electronic Reputation.
• What will they find out about you? Google yourself – use your nicknames and given names. What do you see?
• Get a “Grown Up” email. [email protected] is much more acceptable that [email protected].
• Set up a professional voicemail on your phone. “This is Mary Smith. I am sorry I missed your call. Please leave a message.”
Clean Up Your Electronic Profile
Follow these best practices when using social media: If you wouldn’t want your grandmother to see it then don’t post it. If you even hesitate for a second to post it, Don’t. There is a reason
you hesitated in the first place. Make sure your default picture (and all others) are appropriate. Your Twitter handle and Facebook name and URL (and any other
social media accounts) should not include profanity or slang. Privacy settings only go so far. Social media is PUBLIC; always keep
that in mind. This includes SnapChat, Group Me, etc. Respect yourself and respect others. You are conversing on a public
platform after all. Is who you are representing yourself to be online how do you want
the world to see you? Be a responsible social media user. Consider opinionated topics off limits. Avoid commenting on sexual
orientation, race, and religion.
Clean Up Your Electronic Profile - continued The laws of the real world still apply in the world of social
media, i.e.; underage drinking is against the law, harassment, hate crimes, cyber bullying, etc. Remember that teachers, coaches, teammates, peers, and other important influencers are watching and listening.
Don’t tweet or post during class. That’s like disrespecting someone (in this case, your teacher) behind their back. Always be mindful that your teachers may be monitoring your social accounts.
ReTweeting profanity is no different than using it in your own original Tweets. Don’t do it.
Avoid replying to, or ReTweeting Twitter users with vulgar names. Don’t allow a hater to bait you into a “social beef.” Ignore them and
remember their actions are usually fueled by jealousy. If you don’t like something a media member, a fellow student, your
coach or your teammate, wrote about you - ignore it. Engaging in a public Twitter of Facebook argument is a battle you won’t win.
Clean Up Your Electronic Profile - Athletes There are many other teams and student-athletes at your school.
Take the time to give them a shout-out when they do big things. What happens in the locker room stays there. Things that are said in
private team settings should never find their way onto social platforms.
If your coaching staff and/or athletic administrators give you guidelines to follow for Twitter and/or Facebook, be sure to trust and follow them closely. Your team and staff has your long-term best interests in mind.
Don’t be fooled into believing nobody is paying attention. Colleges have athletic compliance officers who may be monitoring your social accounts. The NCAA has acknowledged that it monitors student-athlete activity on Twitter as well.
Multiple mentions of the same business could be considered an endorsement, which is impermissible according to NCAA legislation.
Act as a representative of your sport and your team and always maintain a professional profile.
HVJ Class of 2016
Update Your Contact Information! This is a busy year for you and your student! As we work towards the
start of your Senior year, there will be many reminders, updates, grade reports, academic status letters , Junior Meetings (“what’s left before graduation”), confirmations and communications sent out.
We can’t reach you if we don’t have your correct contact info!
o Do we have your updated contact information? o Did you update the Guidance Office registration forms? o Mailing Address? o Home and Cell Phone Contacts? o Email?
o Do you have your Parent Access Log In and Password? o Now is not the time to let go! Be sure you are staying on top of
your student’s grades and attendance! o Need your log-in and password? Visit the Main office. o You can email teachers directly o You can see absences and tardies by class o You can see updated grades at any time
HVJ Class of 2016 Community Service
o 20 hours due before March 31st in order to be promoted to Senior for 2015-2016!
o “I did it – I just haven’t turned in my form.” We can’t count it if you haven’t turned in the documentation forms!
o “Doing the MINIMUM” … SCCPSS requires that all students perform Community Service prior to their senior year.
o Remember that true “COMMUNITY SERVICE” is a chance to share your time and talent with others.
o Many scholarship opportunities are looking for MORE THAN THE “MINIMUM”!
o Be sure you document your service hours (we only track the minimum – you need to track all of it).
o Seek out a leadership role – being a worker-bee is OK but to get noticed for scholarships you must GO ABOVE AND BEYOND the minimum!
HVJ Class of 2016 Planning and Preparation: “Who do I ask for what?” Grades and attendance – “Will my child pass the class?” – contact teachers
directly. Transcripts – use the www.gacollege411.com website for nearly all requests Scholarships – newsletters are posted in Guidance and available on the
website. SAT / ACT / Compass Registration – are handled at home. We can offer
computer usage during non-class time BUT ultimately you and your student are responsible for the actual registration.
Twilight Program – Counselor or Dr. Connors Verification of Enrollment (child support, SSI, military, etc) – bring completed
forms to Guidance. Letters of Recommendation – that depends; teacher or counselor – please
remember to provide a week’s notice and a written resume of accomplishments
Birth Certificate / Social Security Card – Your senior will need these items for their future plans. Be sure you have proper originals for their use.
Immunizations! – Students headed to college, a 2 year school or the military will need their updated immunizations record. Remember that what we have on file is OLD – usually not updated later than 7th grade. You will want to see your health care provider or our school nurse for an updated Immunization Record. MANY COLLEGES WILL REQUIRE NEW IMMUNIZATIONS.
HVJ Class of 2016
Where do I go from here? Help us to help your student! Be sure you and your child are
communicating! We want to be sure that your student is prepared for their future
after graduation. Your Junior will soon complete a Senior Survey #1 for their Counselor.
We will ask them to complete an updated survey at the beginning of next year and again prior to graduation.
We know that not every student is headed off to a 4-year college and
there are other options for students. Do you know your child’s future plans? o College – 4 year o College/Tech School – 2 year o Military – recruiter contacts o Work – WBL, JGG, gobuildgeorgia.com o “Undecided” shouldn’t mean “I don’t have a plan” …
HVJ Class of 2016
www.gacollege411.com Your student should be very familiar with this site. They’ve used it since 9th
grade. It offers many tools for planning for their life after high school. They need to KNOW THEIR LOG IN AND PASSWORD!
This will be critical for help during their senior year and after graduation. • Career Planning – What skills do I have? What job is right for me? • College Applications – One stop shopping for many of Georgia’s public and
private colleges. • Transcript Requests – the fastest and most efficient way to get your
transcript sent to colleges. • Explore Your Major – Not sure what you “want to be when you grow up”?
Here’s a tool to help guide you towards your dreams. • “Go Build” – a great tool for our students who think a 4 year degree is not for
them. • HOPE Eligibility – See what you can expect HOPE to cover • Financial Aid – Apply for financial aid – to start your FASFA in January of your
senior year. • Scholarships – A link to apply to other specialty scholarships. • Free Test Prep – SAT / ACT / Compass (even GMAS and GHSGT)
HVJ Class of 2016
• If your child is off track academically, we
offer “Twilight” – a no-cost afterschool program where students may earn credits toward graduation.
• If you think your student needs Twilight to graduate in 2016, see your Counselor immediately as enrollment deadlines are firm.
HVJ Class of 2016
Are you thinking about
Summer School?
• $600 per credit!
• Very tight enrollment
• Cash only!
• Avoid these hassles by passing
your classes!
• (Consider Twilight Program?)
HVJ Class of 2016
ATTENTION ATHLETES!
Is your student thinking of “taking it to the next level”? • If your student is considering continuing their
sport in college be sure you have followed up registration at the NCAA or NAIA.
• Remember!!! Class of 2016 has new eligibility rules! There is a fee for this registration. We must have a PARENT-SIGNED TRANSCRIPT
RELEASE FORM in order to share your transcript with potential coaches.
Don’t forget to send your SAT and ACT scores to NCAA! Wait and you will have to pay extra later!

HVJ Class of 2016
Class Rank / GPA / Honor Graduate CLASS RANK IS BASED SOLELY ON YOUR COMPLETE GPA and the number of
students in your grade level.
GPA’s CHANGE ONLY WHEN CREDIT IS AWARDED– the GPA currently showing will not
change until the end of current semester.
FINAL SELECTIONS: Valedictorian, Salutatorian, Honor Graduates, Superintendent Scholars,
etc will be made following the FIRST SEMESTER of your senior year.
HONOR GRADUATE: Only students who have attained an overall 90 cumulative average or
above (with no rounding up) will be considered for designation as honor graduates. These
designees shall be determined after the first semester senior grades have been posted. Only
graduating seniors who have earned a college preparatory or technology / career preparatory seal
of endorsement may be designated as honor graduates and ranked accordingly. Any student who
has transferred in more than five (5) units from a school that is not accredited by an approved state
or regional accrediting agency (Policy JBC(4) Transferring Credits) may not be designated an
honor graduate, salutatorian or valedictorian.
SUPERINTENDENT'S AWARD: Any graduating senior who has, at the end of the first
semester of the senior year, a 95 overall grade point average (with no rounding up), as determined
by the computer-generated Class Rank Report, and no Conduct Grades of "U" throughout the high
school years, will receive the Superintendent's Award.
GEORGIA SCHOLAR: A statewide recognition with lots of requirements! Start now to be
ready! See separate hand-out.
AGAIN! There is no “rounding up”! A GPA of 89.975 WILL NOT QUALIFY for Honor
Graduate status.
WHILE WE DO NOT SHARE RANKINGS, HONOR GRAD STATUS, ETC., IT IS COMMONLY
DISCUSSED AMONG THE STUDENTS DUE TO THE INFORMATION BEING AVAILABLE TO
THE STUDENTS ON THEIR TRANSCRIPTS.
HVJ Class of 2016
Transcripts o What is my GPA? – Look at the
bottom of the transcript. o How do I know my Class Rank? –
Look at the bottom of the transcript.
o Will I be an Honor Graduate? – Honor graduates require a 90.0 at the end of the 1st semester of their senior year. You can check your GPA in powerschool.
o How do I request a transcript? – We recommend students take advantage of www.gacollege411.com for most requests (these are sent electronically and ensure quick delivery). Otherwise the Guidance Office will need a signed request form. Students 18 and over can sign for themselves. Under 18 will require a parent/guardian signature. Students receive three for free – all others will cost $2.00 each

Convert Your GPA to a 4.0 Scale
• Colleges report GPA (grade point average) on a 4.0 scale.
• The top grade is an A, which equals 4.0.
• This is the standard scale at most colleges, and many high schools use it.
• THIS IS ONLY A GUIDE!
• Check with your selected college website to see their conversions and requirements.
Fill Up Your “Tool Box” Start Building Your Resume!
Look at your school activities outside the classroom. What’s on your resume that’s going to set you apart?
Move you to the top of the list? Are you a leader or a worker-bee?
Employment … Work skills also look good on a resume – especially if they
relate to your future plans Review your transcript …
Again – what’s on your transcript that’s going to set you apart? Move you to the top of the list?
Have you gone above “the minimum”? Honors level? AP courses? Extra academics?
Test Prep … Are you prepared for your selected test? SAT / ACT / Compass / ASVAB? There are plenty of free prep materials available. Jenkins HS offers an on-line SAT and ACT prep course.
Class of 2016
A Strong Senior Year Is Important! “But I don’t need another Math class”
Going beyond the “minimum” Add Honors or AP level courses Taking a 5th academic course Year 3 and Year 4 Foreign Language
Getting your application noticed What makes your transcript shine? A 5th academic course
Keeping your skills sharp Avoid a schedule full of PE electives! “I want to take a break”… “Time off” will NOT help you!
Class of 2016
HVJ Class of 2016 Choosing Your College o Do Your Homework!
o Does it offer my major? o Can I afford it? o Will it get me to my chosen career?
o College Site Visits – o “Preview Days” – Campus Tours – Parent Weekends. o Take advantage of these opportunities to visit the campus. o Is it too big? Too small? Too far? Too close to home?
o College Recruiters On Campus o Students sign up in the Counselors Office to visit with recruiters who are on campus. o With the teachers’ permission any student may miss class to attend a session with a
recruiter here at Jenkins. o Students are encouraged to DO THEIR HOMEWORK before these visits too!
o Applying to College o Applications can be submitted in several ways but most colleges now only
want electronic applications (through their website or the gacollege411.com website).
o Nearly all colleges charge some type of admission fee (but some colleges will waive this fee at certain times of the year or for students who receive free or reduced lunch).
o “Apply to College” Annual Event in November – Seniors who are still undecided may sign up to attend a session during the school day to use the computer lab for applications. Counselors will be on hand help. Students need to be prepared with a way to pay application fees (if applicable).

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is the most widely used multiple-aptitude test battery in the world. As an aptitude test, the ASVAB measures your strengths, weaknesses, and potential for future success.
Students are provided with scores on each of these individual tests and three Career Exploration Score composites: Verbal Skills, Math Skills and Science and Technical Skills.
The ASVAB also provides you with career information for various civilian and military occupations and is an indicator for success in future endeavors whether you choose to go to college, vocational school, or a military career.
Taking the ASVAB Career Exploration Program (CEP), does not obligate you to speak with a recruiter or enlist in the Armed Forces. Once the school receives results, an ASVAB CEP program representative will interpret my results and help you to understand how your skills, interests, and values will assist with planning for college and future in the world of work
