HVJ Class of 2015 Planning and Preparation: This is a busy year for you and your student! It is also a very busy time for the Counselors Office and teachers are ALWAYS busy! Remind students to be pro-active – think ahead – do not leave things until the very

last minute.

“Who do I ask for what?” • Grades and attendance – “Will my child pass the class?” –contact teachers

directly. • Transcripts – use the www.gacollege411.com website for nearly all requests • Scholarships – newsletters are posted in Guidance and available on the website. • SAT / ACT / Compass Registration – are handled at home. We can offer computer

usage during non-class time BUT ultimately you and your student are responsible for the actual registration.

• Twilight Program – Counselor or Dr. Connors • Verification of Enrollment (child support, SSI, military, etc) – bring completed

forms to Guidance. • Letters of Recommendation – that depends; teacher or counselor – please

remember to provide a week’s notice and a written resume of accomplishments • Birth Certificate / Social Security Card – Your senior will need these items for their

future plans. Be sure you have proper originals for their use. • Immunizations! – Students headed to college, a 2 year school or the military will

need their updated immunizations record. Remember that what we have on file is OLD – usually not updated later than 7th grade. You will want to see your health care provider or our school nurse for an updated Immunization Record.

SENIOR ATHLETES!

• DON’T MISS “SENIOR NIGHT”! Each sport offers its own FAREWELL to their seniors. Contact the coach for specific dates and times AND BE THERE to share the moment with your student and their teammates.

• Are you thinking of “taking it to the next level”? If your student is considering continuing their sport in college be sure you have followed up registration at the NCAA or NAIA.

HVJ Class of 2015

www.gacollege411.com Your senior should be very familiar with this site. They’ve used it since 9th

grade. It offers many tools for planning for their life after high school. They need to KNOW THEIR LOG IN AND PASSWORD! This will be critical for help during their senior year and after graduation.

• Career Planning – What skills do I have? What job is right for me? • College Applications – One stop shopping for many of Georgia’s public and

private colleges. • Transcript Requests – the fastest and most efficient way to get your

transcript sent to colleges. • Explore Your Major – Not sure what you “want to be when you grow

up”? Here’s a tool to help guide you towards your dreams. • “Go Build” – a great tool for our students who think a 4 year degree is not for

them. • HOPE Eligibility – See what you can expect HOPE to cover • Financial Aid – Apply for financial aid – start your FASFA • Scholarships – A link to apply to other specialty scholarships. • Free Test Prep – SAT / ACT / Compass (even EOCT and GHSGT)

HVJ Class of 2015 Where do I go from here? Help us to help your student! Be sure you and your child are

communicating! We want to be sure that your student is prepared for their future

after graduation. Your seniors should have already completed Senior Survey #1 for

their Counselor. We will ask them to complete an updated survey prior to graduation.

We know that not every student is headed off to a 4-year college and there are other options for students.

Do you know your child’s future plans?

o College – 4 year o College/Tech School – 2 year o Military – recruiter contacts o Work – WBL, JGG, gobuildgeorgia.com o “Undecided” shouldn’t mean “I don’t have a plan” …

Page 10: Herschel V. Jenkins High School Class of 2015internet.savannah.chatham.k12.ga.us/schools/hvj... · Herschel V. Jenkins High School Class of 2015 Senior Parent Information Night Tue

HVJ Class of 2015 Choosing Your College o Do Your Homework!

o Does it offer my major? o Can I afford it? o Will it get me to my chosen career?

o College Site Visits – o “Preview Days” – Campus Tours – Parent Weekends. o Take advantage of these opportunities to visit the campus. o Is it too big? Too small? Too far? Too close to home?

o College Recruiters On Campus o Students sign up in the Counselors Office to visit with recruiters who are on campus. o With the teachers’ permission any student may miss class to attend a session with a

recruiter here at Jenkins. o Students are encouraged to DO THEIR HOMEWORK before these visits too!

o Applying to College o Applications can be submitted in several ways but most colleges now only

want electronic applications (through their website or the gacollege411.com website).

o Nearly all colleges charge some type of admission fee (but some colleges will waive this fee at certain times of the year or for students who receive free or reduced lunch).

o “Apply to College” Nov 6th Event at Jenkins – Students may sign up to attend a session during the school day to use the computer lab for applications. Counselors will be on hand help. Students need to be prepared with a way to pay application fees (if applicable).

Students Must Sign Up By Tue Nov 4th The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is the most widely used multiple-

aptitude test battery in the world. As an aptitude test, the ASVAB measures your strengths, weaknesses, and potential for future success.

Students are provided with scores on each of these individual tests and three Career Exploration Score composites: Verbal Skills, Math Skills and Science and Technical Skills.

The ASVAB also provides you with career information for various civilian and military occupations and is an indicator for success in future endeavors whether you choose to go to college, vocational school, or a military career.

Taking the ASVAB Career Exploration Program (CEP), does not obligate you to speak with a recruiter or enlist in the Armed Forces. Once the school receives results, an ASVAB CEP program representative will interpret my results and help you to understand how your skills, interests, and values will assist with planning for college and future in the world of work

For additional information and practice tests:

Transcripts o What is my GPA? – Look at the

bottom of the transcript. o How do I know my Class Rank? –

Look at the bottom of the transcript.

o Will I be an Honor Graduate? – Honor graduates require a 90.0 at the end of the 1st semester of their senior year. You can check your GPA in powerschool.

o How do I request a transcript? – We recommend students take advantage of www.gacollege411.com for most requests (these are sent electronically and insure quick delivery). Otherwise the Guidance Office will need a signed request form. Students 18 and over can sign for themselves. Under 18 will require a parent/guardian signature.

Page 18: Herschel V. Jenkins High School Class of 2015internet.savannah.chatham.k12.ga.us/schools/hvj... · Herschel V. Jenkins High School Class of 2015 Senior Parent Information Night Tue

HVJ Class of 2015

Class Rank / GPA / Honor Graduate

o Class Rank is based solely on your complete GPA and the number of students in your grade

level.

o GPA’s change only when credit is awarded – the GPA currently showing will not change until

the end of 1st semester.

o FINAL SELECTIONS: Valedictorian, Salutatorian, Honor Graduates, Superintendent Scholars, etc

will be made following the FIRST SEMESTER of your senior year.

o HONOR GRADUATE: Only students who have attained an overall 90 cumulative average or

above (with no rounding up) will be considered for designation as honor graduates. These

designees shall be determined after the first semester senior grades have been posted. Only

graduating seniors who have earned a college preparatory or technology / career preparatory seal

of endorsement may be designated as honor graduates and ranked accordingly. Any student who

has transferred in more than five (5) units from a school that is not accredited by an approved

state or regional accrediting agency (Policy JBC(4) Transferring Credits) may not be designated

an honor graduate, salutatorian or valedictorian.

o SUPERINTENDENT'S AWARD: Any graduating senior who has, at the end of the first semester

of the senior year, a 95 overall grade point average (with no rounding up), as determined by the

computer-generated Class Rank Report, and no Conduct Grades of "U" throughout the high

school years, will receive the Superintendent's Award.

o There is no “rounding up”! A GPA of 89.95 WILL NOT QUALIFY for Honor Graduate status.

WHILE WE DO NOT SHARE RANKINGS, HONOR GRAD STATUS, ETC., IT IS

COMMONLY DISCUSSED AMONG THE STUDENTS DUE TO THE INFORMATION

BEING AVAILABLE TO THE STUDENTS ON THEIR TRANSCRIPTS.

Community Service

o “Doing the MINIMUM” … SCCPSS requires that all students perform Community Service prior to their senior year.

o Remember that true “COMMUNITY SERVICE” is a chance to share your time and talent with others.

o Many scholarship opportunities are looking for MORE THAN THE “MINIMUM”!

o Be sure you document your service hours (we only track the minimum – you need to track all of it).

o Seek out a leadership role – being a worker-bee is OK but to get noticed for scholarships you must GO ABOVE AND BEYOND the minimum!

Scholarships! WHO DOESN’T NEED $$$ FOR COLLEGE? Scholarships come in all sizes from many different sources but

one thing never changes – YOU MUST APPLY! WITH ONE VERY IMPORTANT EXCEPTION! HOPE SCHOLARSHIP / HOPE GRANT - These are awarded by the State of Georgia

after graduation. Students do not APPLY. Students will see their HOPE eligibility through their gacollege411.com

account around July 1st. Usually students will know their HOPE award BEFORE WE DO. HOPE is awarded based on the student’s ending academic GPA.

Ask your student if they’ve picked up the monthly scholarship newsletter. It’s available in Guidance and on our website.

In early Spring we will have several local scholarships that require individual applications. This information will also be posted on our website with applications available

in our office National Scholarships are nice BUT several small local scholarships can add to

your college fund too. Transcripts for Scholarships: If your student needs a transcript for a scholarship

application, be sure you request it before the deadline! We will never charge for a transcript used to apply for a scholarship.

HVJ Class of 2015 Senior Week Activities … The Home Stretch! By this date, Seniors will have finished their coursework , grades are finalized and they are

anxious to get to the BIG EVENT! Unfortunately, there is still work to be done.

Graduation Practice – Every practice is MANDATORY! Students who work will need to clear their work schedule for this week. Each practice is important. It’s not just “marching in and marching out”. We cover many, many last minute issues for each of our Seniors (Transcript requests, exit surveys, military commitment forms and much more.)

Senior T-Shirt – often the most highly anticipated event (after graduation of course!)

Senior Picnic – a last chance to let off a little energy and share one more relaxed gathering with other members of the Class of 2015.

Graduation Tickets – This is when those highly sought tickets to the graduation ceremony are distributed! How many? We never know until Senior Week! Historically students receive approximately 18 tickets each. Need more? Get on the list for any extras – no guarantee but still we will try!

Fines and Fees – Remember that old soccer uniform you forgot to return in 9th grade? What about that

library book that’s been riding around in the back of your Jeep for 2 years?

Any outstanding fines and fees must be cleared before your student is allowed to receive their diploma. We can’t stop them from participating in the graduation ceremony BUT we can hold that diploma and final transcript until any outstanding fines or fees are cleared.
