Herpes simplex virus2 (HSV-2), also knownas Human herpes virus2 (HHV-2), is a member of

the herpes virus family, Herpesviridae, that infecthumans.

HSV-2 is a ubiquitous and contagious. They can be

spread when an infected person is producing andshedding the virus.

    Symptoms:

Symptoms of herpes simplex virus infection includewateryblisters in the skin ormucous membranes of

the mouth, lips or genitals. Lesions heal with a scab characteristic of herpetic

disease. Sometimes, the viruses cause very mild oratypical symptoms during outbreaks. However, as

neurotropic and neuroinvasive viruses, HSV-2persist in the body by becoming latentand hidingfrom the immune system in the cell bodies ofnerves.

After the initial orprimary infection, some

infected people experience sporadicepisodes of viral reactivation oroutbreaks. In an outbreak, the virus in anerve cell becomes active and istransported via the nerve's axon to theskin, where virus replication andshedding occur and cause new sores.

    Transmission

HSV-2 are transmitted from contactwith an infectious area of the skinduring reactivations of the virus.

Although less likely, the herpesviruses can be transmitted duringlatency.

Transmission is likely to occur duringsymptomatic reactivation of the virusthat causes visible and typical skinsores.

Asymptomatic reactivation means thatthe virus causes atypical, subtle orhard to notice symptoms that are notidentified as an active herpesinfection.

    Atypical symptoms are often

attributed to other causessuch as a yeast infection.

HSV-2 is primarily a sexuallytransmitted infection but rates ofHSV-1 genital infections areincreasing.

    Symptoms resulting from primary

infection with HSV are usually muchmore severe than subsequentoutbreaks, as the body has not had achance to produce antibodies. This

first outbreak of oral herpes (coldsores) carries a low (1%) risk ofdeveloping aseptic meningitis.[1]

    Treatment and vaccinedevelopment

Herpes viruses establish lifelong infections and thevirus cannot currently be eradicated from the body.

Treatment usually involves general-purposeantiviral drugs that interfere with viral replication, reducing the physical severity of outbreak-associated lesions and lowering the chance of

transmission to others. Studies of vulnerablepatient populations have indicated that daily use ofantivirals such as acyclovirandvalacyclovircanreduce reactivation rates.

In vitro research has indicated thatAloe Veramay be effective againstgenital herpes.

Research into a vaccine is ongoing.Efforts to develop an effective vaccinehave so far been hampered by themany adaptations of HSVs to theirhuman hosts during an evolutionarilyancient relationship. One of the mostnotable vaccines in development atthis time is ImmunoVEXHSV2 fromBiovex.
