Friends oF HeritaGe tHanks Parents!

Our Parent/Teacher Organization, the Friends of Heritage (FOH), extends a sincere thanks to families for participating in the three dinner nights at Chick-fil-A and CiCi’s Pizza, as well as the year-long collections of Campbell’s labels, Acme receipts, Giant Eagle Advantage Card points, and General Mills Box Tops. The CiCi’s Pizza fundraiser March 4 was very successful, raising $153 from pizza orders and $83 for the prize drawing (the basket) with a cost of $13 for prize supplies to the basket. Totals for the Chick-fil-A fundraiser on Thursday, April 15 at the Dressler Road Chick-fil-A are not in yet. The evening was a lot of fun -- it was a packed house! Thank you to the many parents and students who joined us that night, which happened to be “blue receipt night.” The total for Box Tops this year has been excellent. Every year we continue to increase our collection, and as a result, FOH has been able to do more for Heritage. The total money earned this year through 10-cent Box Tops is a whopping $1814.90! Mrs. Becky Corbit, HCS parent, just mailed in another $419 that will be applied to our fall check. FOH also received $48 from Tyson. With Giant Eagle “Apples for the Students” points, FOH was able to purchase bulletin board paper of different colors and a large portable ball locker to carry 15-20 basketballs. Mrs. DeMarco will send in 2,000 more Campbell labels soon and will earn an extra 2,000 points, giving FOH about 27,000 points to start with next year.

On May 10, 2007, Brumbaugh-Herrick, Inc. conducted the required re-inspection of Heritage Christian School for hazardous Asbestos Containing Building Materials (ACBM) for the purpose of reassessment according to the Public Law 99-519 AHER Act of 1986. The report is in the Main Office.

PresCHool PonderinGs

The Preschoolers went to the McKinley Museum on April 13 and had a fun time exploring and learning. The students all were brave enough to pass by (or be carried by) the big dinosaur at the entrance! Recently, the preschool also celebrated Earth week and talked about all that God created. The teachers and students discussed ideas for being good stewards of all that God has given us. Teachers taught the verse “God made the world and everything in it,” Acts 17:24a. Did you know that the preschoolers memorize Scripture regularly? Some of Miss Shawna Anderson’s students can even say all of their year’s verses with very little prompting! Heritage preschoolers are hiding God’s word in their hearts at a very young age!

IMMUnIzaTIon ReqUIReMenTs foR sCHool enTRYThe Ohio Department of Health has made a few major changes for the

2010-2011 school year regarding immunizations.

1) The addition of a Tdap booster requirement for 7th grade – effective with the 2010-11 school year and each year thereafter, one dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis, adolescent and adult formulation) or Td (Tetanus and diphtheria, adult formulation) vaccine shall be required prior to entry into the seventh grade. This dose is intended to be administered as a booster dose for students who have completed the required doses of the initial series of DTaP/DT/Td vaccine.

2) The addition of the 2nd dose of Varicella – beginning with the start of the 2010-11 school year, all children entering kindergarten are required to provide evidence of having been immunized against varicella disease. Satisfactory evidence of meeting this requirement is two doses of varicella vaccine, the first dose of vaccine administered on or after the child’s first birthday, and the second dose at least twenty-eight days following the first dose.

3) The requirement that the 4th dose of Polio be administered on or after the 4th birthday - effective with the 2010-11 school year for all pupils entering kindergarten, the final dose of polio vaccine must have been administered on or after the fourth birthday, regardless of the number of previous doses. Special Note: Students enrolled in school during or after the 1999-2000 school year must have received a total of four or more doses of polio vaccine. Students enrolled prior to the 1999-2000 school year are required to have a minimum of three doses.

Vaccines are offered at each of the four health departments. You can contact them by phone at the following numbers: Alliance City Health Department – (330)821-7373; Canton City Health Department – (330)489-3322; Massillon City Health Department – (330)830-1710; Stark County Health Department – (330)493-9928. If there is an objection to immunizations, either for medical or religious reasons, please submit this in writing to the school nurse and office. Medical exemptions should be signed by a physician; and religious objections by a parent.

annual MeetinG, 7 P.M., May 27

Calling all members of The Heritage Parent Association! (any tuition-paying person with a currently-enrolled student), we need YOU at the Annual Meeting. Meet the current board, hear from new board nominees, vote on nominees and on the upcoming year’s budget and enjoy a great summary of the year. At this Annual Meeting, we also will recap the results of the most recent Parent Association Meeting held April 13, and discuss plans for future gatherings of parents and guardians toward the improvement and betterment of our school!

Third graders studied matter in science class, including how the air in our mouths can fill up a bubble gum bubble. They measured the gum bubbles

and compared bubble sizes. Peyton Moore proudly shows off his gum bubble, while Alexis Hunter measures Vanessa Parker’s bubble in the background.

auCtion - a Great suCCess! Thanks to the generosity of dozens of area businesses, organizations,

churches, and families, our Heritage “Conquering Our Future” Dinner and Benefit Auction achieved the goal of raising $20,000 for Heritage! More than 200 parents, community members, students, staff and alumni gathered on Saturday, March 27 at the Meyers Lake Ballroom to celebrate Heritage and raise funds to benefit the future of our students.

The evening began with time to view and bid on more than 130 silent auction items and packages donated by many generous organizations. There was a huge variety of items to bid on, including hand-crafted cornhole games and a Blu-Ray player. Many businesses donated their services including driving lessons, financial counseling and landscaping. One table consisted solely of items or services donated by our Heritage students and staff. Heritage donations included priceless classroom treasures such as a handprint and photo quilt, and a thumbprint ceramic cookie jar and plate. Heritage secondary students graciously donated their time to provide homemade baked goods, babysitting, and yardwork. Thank you also for the generous support of the event sponsors for their donations.

A delicious buffet dinner was catered by the staff of Mr. Mike’s Catering, and the meal received very good reviews! Tables of mouth-watering desserts including Ho-Ho cake were provided by Sammons Sweets & Treats. Following dinner, Mr. Jim Cassler, chair of the development committee, auctioned off five cheesecakes that were made by Heidi Sammons, and which were happily bid on by attendees.

The after-dinner program included musical performances by HCS students under the direction of Heritage music director Mrs. Andrea Clemens. An ensemble of fourth graders played recorders, including a rendition of Amazing Grace; and middle school and high school students performed on the drums, trumpet and clarinet, accompanied by Mrs. Clemens and Heritage 2nd grade teacher Miss Sara Yackey.

Mr. Cassler addressed the crowd about Heritage and its needs, including the possibility of a new gymnasium, and how that could benefit Heritage. He reviewed the improvements made to the facilities thus far this year, and the hope for the future, asking the audience to participate in supporting our future. The presentation also featured photos of a “100th Day of School Project” created by Heritage third grader Colin Smith, who used a large cardboard box to represent our building. The back of the building showed the renditions of the proposed new gymnasium and the sides of the building showed our newly-adopted mission: A - Academic Achievement; B - Bible-based; C - Community Commitment. What a blessing to see such a young student excited about our future and our mission!

The silent auction continued with much laughter and conversation, as bidders tried to win their favorite items. During the bidding, attendees enjoyed the opportunity to take photos with our live Conqueror mascot, played by Heritage parent and area minister, Galen Oakes.

The Heritage Live Auction was filled with fun and laughter as Mr. Richard Kiko of Kiko Auctioneers and Realtors compelled the crowd to raise their yellow bid cards in support of Heritage. He expressed that he himself had had students at Heritage and believes in the education they received. Heritage parent Greg Maxin worked alongside Mr. Kiko to describe and define live auction items, keeping the crowd entertained and laughing. One of the highlights from the live auction was the purchase of the rights to name the main hall of the school building. The winning bidder announced that the hall will be named in honor of retired HCS teacher, Mrs. Carol Moosey, who was in attendance that evening and who recently retired from full-time teaching after 32 years at Heritage.

Investing in the students at Heritage Christian School is an investment in the future -- for now and for eternity. Thank you to the businesses and individuals who supported us. We encourage you to patronize the businesses and organizations that demonstrate a desire to support the great work of Christian education.

The Winter Sports Awards Dinner took place on Thursday, March 25th at Heritage. Those attending enjoyed a meal and fellowship before moving to the auditorium for the presentation of awards.

All of the coaches did well at thanking all of the many different people who make a season successful. As Coach Larry Wade explained during the Jr. High Girls portion of the evening using the Bible teaching from I Corinthians chapter 12 “...even the big toe is important. It is ugly to look at and doesn’t receive much recognition but when a person has to survive without it they find out how important it is.” Some of the highlights of the evening were as follows:

A word of encouragement to high schoolers who suffer from stage fright: Fear no more! Speech meet is officially over for this year! (Collective sigh) Yes, at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on March 15th, the ACSI Senior High Speech Meet signaled an end to the madness of memorization for high schoolers. Seniors Sadie Fellows and Olivia Weckbacher, junior Nathan Schmitt, sophomores Anthony DeMarco, Jailynn Paige, Matt Davis, and Brad Curlutu, and freshmen Rachel King, Alyssa Frey, and Jenna Fostyk led the charge for Heritage’s strong finish in the ACSI Senior High Speech Meet. Sadie Fellows took home the Best in Category award for Dramatic Interpretation. “I like pretending to be someone I’m not,” replied Sadie when asked why she liked participating in Speech Meet. “And the extra credit isn’t bad, either.”Anthony DeMarco also won Best in Category for Humorous Interpretation. “I picked my piece because I wanted to make people laugh,” declared Anthony. “I was really excited when they called my name to receive the trophy.” Anthony’s piece was a solo, humorous piece called “Rinse the Blood Off My Toga.” It is a very funny, modernized interpretation of the murder of Roman Emperor Julius Caesar and the following investigation and manhunt. His piece was so fine-tuned that he was chosen to present it in front of everyone who attended the event. Needless to say, it brought peals of laughter from the audience.

Every Heritage student received a red ribbon or blue ribbon (the two highest ribbons) for their performances. Blue ribbons were handed out to Anthony DeMarco (Rinse the Blood Off My Toga), Nathan Schmitt (How will Casinos Affect Ohio?), Sadie Fellows (MLK’s I Have a Dream), and Matt Davis (Casey’s Revenge). Jailynn Paige (A Visitor for Bear), Brad Curlutu (Green Eggs and Ham), Alyssa Frey and Rachel King (Who’s On First? duo acting), and Jenna Fostyk (Oh the Places You’ll Go!) all received red ribbons, barely missing out on a blue ribbon by a scant point or two. All in all, the competitors from Heritage looked extremely sharp at the end of the day.

Final elementary winners were Mrs. Lisa Norris’ third graders (against Mrs. Carrie McNutt’s second grade finalists) and Mrs. Rebecca McConahay’s fourth graders (against Miss Kristi Kindler’s and Mrs. Amber Kasler’s fifth grade finalists). The 6th through 12th grades organized their competition using a March Madness theme. Sports Newsken Hill Hits 1,000 Points

by Marty Martin, Athletic Director

Traditionally the 1,000 point mark has been a notable undertaking for a high school basketball player. Most players will only spend two or possibly three years on their school’s varsity team and so it becomes a very difficult mark to achieve.

Heritage Christian’s Kenneth Hill came into the Friday, February 26 game at Malone University needing 25 points to reach 1,000 career points. The opponent was a tough East Palestine High team who also had a young man on their roster close to the 1,000-point mark, senior Ben Gysin, needing 19 points that evening to hit the mark. Plans had been made for the possibility of Ken hitting his 1,000th point. There was an extra game ball at the ready so Ken and his family could keep the 1,000-point ball as

a momento of the occasion. During a pregame conversation, the East Palestine head coach had requested that very little mention be made of his player’s possible achievement that evening since they were on the road. The thinking was that Bulldog fans would recognize their player back home.

As the evening progressed, the varsity game reached the fourth quarter with neither player having reached the 1,000-point mark. News began to spread quietly through the stands among the spectators of the number of points needed for each.

This was the final regular season game for each team. The question remained: Would either of these senior boys be able to hit the mark? Finally nearing the end of the game, with East Palestine holding a semi-comfortable lead, Ben Gysin made a bucket for the Bulldogs which put him over the top. The East Palestine fans, knowing what had just occurred, erupted into applause and cheers but still no mention of it was made over the P.A. system. Within seconds as Heritage took the ball down to their end of the court Ken Hill made a shot and was fouled in the process. The Heritage fans all came to their feet. Ken had reached the 1,000-point mark…literally only seconds after his opponent had reached the same mark! The Bulldog fans were still applauding their player. As basketball fans throughout the entire gym cheered and congratulated both young men, an announcement was made over the P.A. system recognizing both players. Following the game, pictures were taken of Ben Gysin and Ken Hill together with their coaches. By the way…Heritage did lose the game. The sportsmanship, excitement and congratulatory remarks that filled the gym following the game, though, seemed to overshadow the Conqueror’s loss.

Ken Hill also represented Heritage at the area All-Star Game played at Walsh University. He was coached by HCS parent and Coach Lenny Gillems and Jeff Burton. In addition, Ken Hill was named to the Northeast Inland All-District Boys Basketball Teams for Division IV Third Team. Senior Josh Davidson also received special mention for Division IV Third Team.

JosH Moody Joins united states air ForCeHeritage alum Josh

Moody (Class of ‘09) boarded a plane to Texas on April 20, headed toward 8-1/2 weeks of Basic Training at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. In a few short weeks, he will be known as an Airman. Josh has a scheduled graduation date of June 18. Following graduation, he will begin 15 weeks of Technical Training in Security Forces. Once he completes Technical Training, he will have a 10-day leave, and then will receive his orders.

“Josh wanted solid training that would provide a good job, but wouldn’t require the traditional college choices and college debt,” said Josh’s mother Pam Moody, Tuition Accounts Manager for Heritage. “Josh began looking into the Air Force and saw opportunities for college credit and job security.” Josh reportedly scored well on the entrance test, titled the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), and has enlisted for four years, at this point. Before he left, his family and friends gathered for a military send-off. They were able to eat lunch with him at the airport and wait at the flight gate before sending
