Here’s to a Healthier New Year

Was your New Year’s resolution to lose weight or live healthier in 2020? About half of Americans have declared this as their goal for the new year, so you’re not alone! Here are a few tips to help keep you on track: Choose lean meats and poultry, and try to include more fish in your diet. (Salmon, tuna and mackerel are great sources of heart-healthy omega-3s.) Don’t let pain stop you from exercising. You don’t need to run a marathon to keep fit – just include some low-impact

activities in your day, like walking, yoga, water aerobics or tai chi. They’ll help you stay flexible and mobile – and can even help diminish pain. Start snacking between meals! It’s actually best to eat something at least every 3 hours to keep your blood sugar stable and your appetite in check. (But don’t use that as an excuse to stock up on chips. Grab some healthy nibbles like almonds, Greek yogurt or berries.) Drink more water. You should

be getting 64 ounces a day. Keep a water bottle with you throughout the day so sipping it becomes second nature. This will also help curb your hunger!

On a freezing Wisconsin winter day, soup is the ultimate comfort food. Not only does it warm you up, but it’s versatile and can easily be loaded with nutritious ingredients. Eat your Veggies From carrots and corn to butternut squash, soups can contain an endless combination of veggies. Pureed broccoli and cauliflower soups make for great vegetable-forward

options, as do minestrone and classic tomato soups. Skip the Sodium Canned soups are convenient, but often contain much higher levels of sodium. So opt for homemade soups and stews, when possible. They’ll probably also contain fresher ingredients! Vary Your Protein There’s no doubt that chicken and beef make for tasty soups, but you can also get

your protein without the meat. Lentils, beans and chickpeas, for instance, are hearty and filling and packed with protein.

Tatihanna is extremely valuable to our team due to her versatility and ability to work on all units. She has worked under her mentor, Jenny Cornell, over the past year. Tatihanna just returned from

having a baby a few short weeks ago and we are excited to have her back on our team! Congrats, Tatihanna! You are a wonderful coworker and caregiver and we’re so lucky to have you on the team! Feel free to congratulate her when you see her around the community.

Letters to Santa

This year, we invited kids to write letters to Santa and drop them off at Deer Creek. Then our resident elves helped Santa write back, making sure the children got their replies in time for Christmas. It turned into a great activity.

Santa’s Visit to Deer Creek

Our Christmas celebrations included a special visit from the man in red himself! On December 7, during our holiday open house, Santa stopped by and posed for some pictures with residents and families.
