Heritage Academy Annual Scholarship Fund
This year, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of our historic home, the Houghton school building (see page 3). It started with ONE man, John
W. Houghton. He left the land and the money to build the original school in 1853 to educate the “poor children of Ward One” (30901 zip code). ONE man, using what he had to make a difference. John W. Houghton was a Christian who had experienced the power of the ONE, Jesus Christ. Influenced by his faith, his upbringing in New England, and the adversity resulting from multiple business failures, he thrived in Augusta and improved the quality of life of many Augustans, both in his life and in his death. He provided his slaves with passage to Liberia to live in freedom. Through his estate, he has improved the lives of tens of thousands of children in the Augusta area.Since then, many other ONEs have joined him in doing the same. The following pages are filled with the pictures, names and tangible life improvements that have resulted from the contributions of those of you who have decided to be the ONE.This year, our theme for the Annual Fund and Annual Report is “Be the ONE”. Please don’t let the enormity of the task keep you from deciding to make a difference. That’s how it started and how it continues.

“It seems almost inconceivable that the school which I’ve provided for in my will should still exist, that it is housed in a building on the site of the original Houghton Institute, and that my intent, that it serve especially the poor and also be used as a place of Christian instruction, is the same intent as that of this well named Heritage Academy.” - Dr. Jim Garvey as John W. Houghton

“I have done things in business of which I am not proud. But I have done many things of which I am proud. This fine building, these fine educators and students, makes me proud. It is a joyful thing to be a small part of this wonderful school. John Houghton would be proud of what has been done as well.” -Clay Boardman
“I also bequeath to the City Council of Augusta in the state of Georgia $4,000 for the erection of a brick school house... purpose of said school to be free for all the poor children of said city and to be open on the Sabbath to all denominations of evangelical Christians for divine worship or for prayer meeting.”
- John W. Houghton “the ONE who started it all”
On March 22, 2017, Heritage Academy celebrated our home’s 100th Anniversary. After the great fire of 1916, the building was rebuilt and reopened for students on March 22, 1917.

“I love teaching at Heritage because of the great sense of mission. I love igniting curiosity in young minds and also being able to share my faith freely and encouraging the kids in their faith in the midst of rigorous exploration of science. I love being a part of justice lived out in our city and a quality education for all children.” - Courtney Hatcher, middle school science teacher and HA parent
