Master Sergeant Scott joined the Marine Corps in October 1992. In 2004, he reported to 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion (3rd LAR) and was assigned as a Platoon Sergeant in Delta Company and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) in the Al Anbar Province. On August 20, 2006, during his 2nd deployment to Iraq, Scott was severely injured in an IED blast in the town of Rawah, Iraq. He spent his recovery at BAMC for the next 18 months but still wanted to remain as an active Marine.
After his recovery, Scott served at Division Schools at Camp Pendleton. In September 2010, Scott was attached to I Marine Expeditionary Forces (I MEF) and deployed to Afghanistan where he was attached to the camp Commandant’s Office supporting over 15,000 personnel and all Operations that occurred on Camp Leatherneck.
In 2011, he reported to Wounded Warrior Battalion-East, San Antonio Military Medical Center Detachment (SAMMC) and, served as the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge where he supervised the care and transition of all wounded, ill and injured Marines assigned to the hospital until he retired from the Marine Corp in January 2015. He received the Purple Heart, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal 2nd Award, Combat Action Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal 6th Award.
Master Sergeant Scott and his wife Lilly have 3 children, Adriana, Isabella (deceased), and Blaine and look forward to being residents in Copper Ridge. Vintage Estate Homes has designed a beautiful 4 bedroom, 3 bath home that will meet his needs as a burn victim and includes a handicap accessible bedroom and bathroom that can be used for fellow veterans who need a place to stay during crisis or just to regroup. Their 12 year old daughter, Isabella, went to be with the Lord in August 2016 and this year’s Gala is dedicated to her memory.
Thank you to the donors of Helping a Hero for investing in me, in my children, and in our future. You will see a return on your investment, because I refuse to live life for myself.

Special GuestsDeborah Duncan
When you look at how Deborah Duncan grew up, it is no surprise that she ended up in the communication business. Raised in a military family, her early years were spent in Taiwan and Japan. As her family constantly moved around, young Deborah attended five different elementary schools. At each school, determined to learn everything about her
“new friends,” Deborah honed her interviewing skills. She completed grade school in San Antonio where her father
retired. Deborah then enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin and earned a degree in Radio-Television-Film.
After a couple of years in radio, Deborah made the switch to television. After three years on the Texas television scene, Deborah moved to New York to co-host “Our Home.” Although she loved New York City, her heart was still in Texas. In December 2002, Deborah joined KHOU-TV Channel 11 as an anchor on 11 News This Morning. Today, Deborah hosts of Great Day Houston. The show, produced locally by KHOU-TV, airs weekdays at 9:00 a.m. on Channel 11.
The Oak Ridge BoysThe four-part harmonies and upbeat songs of The Oak Ridge Boys have spawned dozens of Country hits and a Number One Pop smash, earned them Grammy, Dove, CMA, and ACM awards and garnered a host of other industry and fan accolades. Every time they step before an audience, the Boys bring four decades of charted singles, and 50 years of tradition, to a stage show widely acknowledged as among the most exciting anywhere. And each remains as enthusiastic about the process as they have ever been.
Their career has spanned not only decades, but also formats. In 1977, Paul Simon tapped the Oaks to sing backup for his hit Slip Slidin’ Away, and they went on to record with George Jones, Brenda Lee, Johnny Cash, Roy Rogers, Billy Ray Cyrus, Bill Monroe, Ray Charles and even Shooter Jennings, the son of their old friend Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter. Most recently, the group recorded a duet with Merle Haggard for their 2015 Rock of Ages hymns and Gospel favorites album.
The Oak Ridge Boys have appeared before five presidents. And they have become one of the most successful touring groups anywhere, still performing some 150 dates each year at major theaters, fairs, and festivals across the U.S. and Canada. The Oak Ridge Boys have spent their career giving back to our military. They have participated in USO tours and in countless events performing for our military and thanking our veterans. In May, 2016 they had the opportunity to join Helping a Hero to break ground on a home for a wounded warrior in Pennsylvania.
CELEBRATING TEN YEARS OF HELPING A HERO... ONE HOME AT A TIME!Special thanks to Rotary District 5890 and donors and volunteers too numerous to count! In addition to the homes designed and built for the specific needs of our wounded heroes, Helping a Hero has also continued to provide marriage retreats, caregiver retreats, emergency financial aid, recreation outings including hunting, fishing, golf, and sporting activities, and Operation Merry Christmas. Helping a Hero is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt charity based in Houston with a nationwide impact. Transparency, accountability and over 80 cents of every dollar spent on our veteran programs places Helping a Hero among America’s top charities serving America’s heroes.
We want to express our appreciation for your generosity and support in the building of our new home. Your commitment was incredibly helpful and allowed us to fulfill our dream of owning a brand new handicap accessible home. Thank you and God bless you always.
- Chuck and Ines Fuller (Helping a Hero Home Recipient) Helping a Hero has given us more than security in a new home. They are a family that has brought together a community of families that can relate to each other. They stay involved beyond just presenting us the key to our new homes. My family and especially my children have had lives enriched with people and experiences we could not have given them on our own. - SGT (Ret) Jackie Rodriguez, USA (Helping a Hero Home Recipient) Once I got over the frustration of having to rely on others, life became great. Jack said, I never grieved about what happened to me because I do not want to waste the time. Life is short, so I want to live it to the fullest.
- SPC (Ret) Jack Zimmerman, USA (Helping a Hero Home Recipient)
