Hello! My name is Phoebe McCoy... as a child I grew up in Eastern Ky. My adoptive parents who raised me were Denver and Lorene Miller. I have one brother and three sisters. God could not have blessed me with a better family. They took me into their home when I was one month old and treated me like their own flesh and blood. They gave me all the love and care that a child could ever need. Dad was a coal operator and mom was a homemaker. They worked very hard to provide for their family. At the age of 8 years old we moved to East Tennessee and this has been my home since. When I was about 8 years old I remember visiting my dad’s parents home and noticed a picture there of my dad’s sister and her family. Oddly, the baby she was hold-ing, looked just like my own baby picture. When I went home I found the picture of myself, in the very same outfit, I was very puzzled as to why I was in their family picture. As time went by, I learned that my dad’s sister had died in an car accident in 1971. I also learned that I was in the car with her at the time and that she was my mother, which made my adoptive dad, my biological uncle... but that was that, there were no more discus-sions and even though I always wondered and had so many questions, out of respect for my parents, I kept quiet about it and kept those questions to myself. Then when I was 31, I learned that I had been born in Lexington, KY and that my dad’s sister, whom I thought was my biological Mother, was indeed NOT my biologi-cal mother, she had actually adopted me at birth. This was very upsetting as I thought that I was at least in the Miller bloodline but my sister confirmed that it was all true, I was not the biological daughter of my Dad’s sister. So when I asked her, who is my birth mother, all she knew what that she was in high school when she became pregnant with me. Words could not describe how I felt. My entire life had been a mystery and just as I thought that I had it all figured out, I realized it was even more complex than I could have ever imaged. Although I had no desire to meet my birth mother at the time, I had so many questions, why and do I look like her, etc...

A few years after I was married, I began to notice a change in my adoptive mom’s health. After many tests, we were finally told she had a form of dementia or Alzheimer’s. This was a very tough time for us but also the time that God blessed my husband and I with two beautiful children. Alexis is now 7 and Alexander is 3. My children never got to know their grandmother in her good years, but she loved them and she had ways of expressing her love to them even though she could not tell them in words. In March of 2008, my adop-tive mother, the only mother I have ever known, passed away. To say I was having a pity party for myself is an understatement and understandable, why God made it so hard for me to have a mother. I’d had three mother’s in my life yet now, had none. My first one gave me up at birth, my second one was killed in an auto accident and now Alzheimer’s and cancer has taken the one He had given me for the last 36 years. I just could not un-derstand. I wanted and needed a mother so badly in my life and a grandmother for my children. So, last year I felt it was time to start the search for my birth mother. I wanted to know my family medical his-tory, if nothing else. I prayed and asked God to lead and guide me in this search.

The first thing I had to do was file a petition for the records to be opened. I waited several weeks be-fore learning that social services had all my information and that they would contact my birth mother. I was hoping to hear a call on June 2(my birthday). I thought that would be the best present ever, but I didn’t receive that call but I never gave up either and on November 7, a pack-age arrived from KY Cabinet of Families and Children.

As I was going through the papers, I found a hand written letter, a letter from my birth mother that she had written in 1980 when I was at the age of 18. I could not believe that I finally knew her name. It was Helen Louise Lowe Bursby and at the time she had written the letter, she lived in Hendersonville, TN and I was so ready to find her especially after learning that she had been searching for me my entire life but my adop-tive father had the records sealed. I was so excited and when I got home I tried to look her up on the internet

but had no luck. She was no longer at the Hendersonville address. For days and says I searched for Helen Louise Lowe Bursby but was not successful in finding her. The second week of November I received information about Helen’s parents. This was the key in finding her. We started making calls to ev-eryone with the last name of Lowe in Pikeville, on the 3rd call we found Helen’s sister-in-law and she kindly gave me Helen’s new address and telephone number.

At 4:20 p.m. I made the call. When she answered, I said “Helen this is Phoebe McCoy but you know me as Penny Elizabeth.” (This was the name she had given me at birth.) She kept saying to her friend “oh my, this is her!!” She fell to the ground and began to cry. Helen’s friend got on the phone and told me “you just don’t know how hard she has tried to find you. She talks about you all the time.”

Mother, Helen Bursby at age 16. daughter Phoebe McCoy, age 1 year.

After a few minutes, Helen put her daughter Natalie on 3-way. We gave each other our addresses and tele-phone numbers. Helen and I talked later that night and we met the next day at her home in Oak Ridge.

Since then, Helen and her family have all welcomed me and have expressed their love toward me and my fam-ily, this is such an amazing feeling and experience. They had come to the conclusion, that after 38 years, I may not have known I was adopted or that I may not even be alive. Helen told me the reason she had to give me up at birth was because her mother did not want to disgrace their family.

At the age of 17, Helen was 6 months pregnant when she told her mother and her mother was worried about ruining her father’s reputation so she sent Helen to the Florence Crittenden Home in Lexington, KY, where she stayed until I was born. Helen said she counted my fin-gers and toes and kissed me on the nose before they took me away and she never saw me again. Several years later, Helen married and had one daughter, Natalie who also lives in Oak Ridge. Natalie has 3 children so God has increased my family and has made it even better.

I feel like I have been on vacation for a long time and have been re-united with my family. We do not feel like strangers. There is never a moment of silence when we are together. After all these years, after all the confusion, all the not knowing and wondering... I have found my birth Mother and we are the best of friends.

God gave me a family that raised me and taught me Biblical principles and took me to church and I learned to trust in God for everything, for that I could not be more appreciative and Helen honored her mother and did what she thought was best for me in 1971 and suf-fered many years of grief over doing so but she never gave up on finding me, and now, I’m so happy to be a part of my Mother’s family and am looking forward to the Lowe family reunion in June.

While many kids and teens in the Lakeway area spend their time dreaming of touchdowns, 3 point baskets, soccer goals and home runs, the kids at Red Dragon/Victory BJJ are dreaming of armbars, triangle chokes and kimuras. These are just a few of the many submissions used in the sport (and self-defense system) of Brazil-ian Jiu-Jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was pioneered by the Gracie family in the early 20th century and uses takedowns, positional control and submis-sions to defeat an attacker. Think of it as folkstyle wrestling on steroids. With the inception of a point system to allow competition, the sport began to grow by leaps and bounds, and the number of participants has really exploded over the past 6 years.

Team Victory has consistently finished at or close to the top at every competition it has traveled to, and the last 6 months have been no exception. The Tennessee State Championships were held in Maryville this past October, and Team Victory brought home the overall team title as well as a slew of individual titles. In February the team traveled to Atlanta, GA for the US Nationals. 87 teams were represented at the tournament, and once again Team Victory brought home the overall title for kids and teens.

Manley Baptist Church’s Recreation Ministry is on the go year round. The church has been offering Upward Sports programs for children to the com-munity for 17 years. What began as a basketball program, has now grown to include soccer, flag foot-ball, cheerleading and various sports camps. In fact, Manley is the only church in the nation to offer all Upward sports and camps. Over 300 children just finished competing in the basketball program, and Manley will soon begin soccer season with 180 chil-dren signed-up to play in a few weeks.

Upward Sports is a vision of Caz McCaslin from Spartanburg, SC. He has built the Upward Sports Ministry with an emphasis on every child being a winner through equal playing time regardless of ability, providing a positive environment and Christian based devotionals. Manley also tries to accommodate all children to play sports, and has had several students with disabilities to enjoy playing. The Manley Upward basketball program has grown so much, that two years ago Manley partnered with Alpha Baptist Church to accommodate the growing program. 17 students, teachers, and parents recently returned from an ecological field study of the Florida Everglades and a living coral reef. The five day trip was led by the school’s headmaster, Dr. Henry G. Selby. Selby, a certified interpretive guide, has been leading wilderness expedi-tions for over thirty years. He has a particular affection for the natural areas of south Florida. “The ecosystem here is remarkably fragile,” he says, “and it’s a wonderful living laboratory for our students.” The field study featured two snorkeling trips to a coral reef, a “swamp tromp” into the sawgrass prairie and dwarf cypress swamp, sightings of endangered birds such as the wood stork, and (in addition to innumera-ble alligators) a view of the extremely rare American crocodile. An added treat was spotting three manatees in a freshwater canal. “Off To See The Lizard” is part of the middle school’s Renaissance Pro-gram wherein students participate in experiential learning as a compli-ment to the classroom. Each student is given an area of expertise (such as dendrology, hydrology, ornithology, or marine zoology) at the beginning of the school year. After several months of preparation, the students teach each other while studying the subtropical ecosystem. All Saints’ Episcopal School serves students in preschool through eighth grade, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Southern Association of Independent Schools.

Attend any middle or high school, and you will be amazed at the variety of musical ability and artistic creativity shown by these students. Sometimes, they combine their special abili-ties and one example are the boys who created their own band called Minoan Shadow. Minoan Shadow is a heavy metal band made up of three eighth graders from East Ridge Middle School, named Ben Brooks, Sam Morgan, and Matt Tucker.

Middle School RockersMinoan Shadow

The band’s vocalist is fourteen-year old Ben Brooks, who is the son of Don and Jean Brooks. Ben has been a member of the East Ridge Choir for the past three years and has performed in numerous concerts. Not only can Ben sing, but he is also a commendable sketch artist.

The group’s lead guitarist is thirteen year old Sam Morgan, whose parents are Dan and Janice Snider Morgan. Sam is a straight A student who is involved in choir, band, and other school and church activities. Last fall, Sam was the solo guitarist for East Ridge Beta Club’s group talent competition that won first place in the statewide competition. He is looking forward to performing with the East Ridge Beta Club at the national convention in Louisville, Kentucky, in June.

Sam also plays guitar in his church’s youth praise team on Sunday mornings, and he has played both solo and backup concert guitar. The band’s drummer is fourteen year old Matt Tucker, who is the son of Melissa and Daniel Tucker. Matt has played gui-tar and drums since he was a very young child. “If anyone has musical experience here, it’s Matt,” says Sam Morgan. “He has played music and has been around musicians lon-ger than any of the rest of us has. Matt has lived in a vari-ety of places and situations, including Germany, which have played a role in the development of his musical abilities.” Matt is active in the youth praise group at his church on Sundays and Wednesdays, and in the East Ridge Choir and band where he has played guitar in concert.

Minoan Shadow has had a few experiences that relate to more mature bands. Sam, Matt, and Ben have written their own music, Sam designed the band’s t-shirts and the band has played gigs, and jointly created a Facebook page featur-ing their band.

All three young men agree that it takes a lot of dedication to have even a semi-successful band. The members of Mi-noan Shadow have put a lot of work into their band the year-and-a-half they’ve been together and have no inten-tions of stopping anytime soon.

Motown Madness is a city-wide discipleship weekend that is available for area youth groups. This week-end involves different churches from the Lakeway area. This was our 6th year to have the Motown Madness weekend in Morristown. The weekend is usually held at First Baptist Church, Morristown or Manley Baptist Church. The students that participate in this weekend are in grades 6-12.

Motown Madness is a Disciple Now weekend that promotes discipleship, fellowship, community, and mis-sions. The annual event allows churches to bring stu-dents together from many different schools, but for one purpose. It affords all of us the opportunity to model the love of Christ, particularly as we love one another, and join hands in reaching our community.

The weekend involves worship services on Friday night, Saturday morning, and Saturday night. Students stayed in host homes during the weekend, where they have small group Bible studies led by a college student or an adult. The weekend is a major event

Esco Jarnagincandidate forSheriff I, Sheriff Esco Jarnagin, ask for your support & Vote for re-election in 2010. Since taking office, I made many improve-ments that better serve the Sheriff ’s Office and the citizens

of Hamblen County . Some changes made are: 1) re-certified the jail and retained this certification; 2) created a warrant team that resolved over 4,000 of the 8,000 inherited unserved warrants; -- warrants are now served in a timely fashion-- 3) established full-time narcotic and vice teams that achieved great success in busting “meth houses” and arresting drug dealers and users; 4) assigned an officer to the FBI’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Ar-eas (HIDTA) unit to combat the transportation of drugs from Mexico and Atlanta; 5) equipped all officers with bullet proof vests, taser guns, and in-car video cameras; 6) saved taxpayers over $100,000 yearly by persuading the state of Tennessee to increase payment for housing state inmates in our jail; 7) saved tax payers thousands of dollars by developing a new, workable commissary

for the jail, 8) re-established the GED program; 9) launched the first female inmate roadside litter pick-up detail that, in conjunction with the men, collected over 2,124,240 pounds of litter last year alone; 10) instituted measures to enhance court room and court house se-curity; 11) developed rank structure for jail employees that enhances professionalism, accountability, safety, and security; 12) transferred responsibility of inmate trans-port and other escorts to jail employees so patrol units are free to patrol neighborhoods and protect citizens; 13) sought compensation for housing illegal immigrants which resulted an average of over $14,000 saved for the taxpayers yearly ; 14) continued to provide funeral escorts for citizens’ loved ones free of cost, 15) desig-nated an officer to investigate medical claims thus pre-venting pay out of illegal claims. With the help of my able bodied staff, I would be honored to serve the citizens of Hamblen County and Morristown for another four years. Esco Jarnagin continued... opportunities for all employ-ees; work with county commissioners to prevent any tax increase, and keep the jail in good repair to prevent the use of tax dollars for the construction of a new facility. I am a lifetime native of Hamblen County , and upon graduation from high school in 1966 volunteered for military service. Upon completion of my service in the 38th parallel in Korea , I received an honorable discharge. I served with the local National Guard for an additional three years and am a veteran of foreign wars. My law enforcement career began with the Morristown Police Department in 1971. During this time, I took the op-portunity to further my education by utilizing the GI Bill. In 1975, I graduated with honors from Walters State Community College with an Associate’s degree in crimi-nal justice. In 1977, I graduated with honors from East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice and a minor in psychology. On three separate occasions, the Morristown Police Depart-ment honored me by naming me Police Officer of the Year. I also received many commendations and letters of appreciation. I am a graduate of the FBI National Police Academy at Quantico , Virginia . In addition, I re-ceived over 3,000 hours of specialized law enforcement

training. My studies include courses on management and leadership, budget preparation, and investigation of various crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, burglary, and extortion. I investigated more than 6,000 crimes, including over a dozen murder cases. Of these mur-der cases, 100% resulted in conviction. Since my term as Sheriff began in September 2006, I assisted in three murder investigations, which resulted in timely arrests. One defendant has been convicted of one of the mur-ders and the other suspects await trial in the Hamblen County Jail for the other two murders. My wonderful wife Kathy and I celebrated our 34th wed-ding anniversary on March 12th. We are active mem-bers of Rocky Point Baptist Church . We have two sons, Brad and wife Dr. Whitney (Locke) Jarnagin and Jason and wife Megan (Brooks) Jarnagin, and a new grandson Hank. I am the son of Novella (Jarnagin) Haager and Buck Haager. As your Sheriff, I am committed to returning all phone calls and have honored that commitment to the best of my ability. I listen to the concerns and problems of the people and, in most instances, have helped them resolve their issues. I value the input of all citizens. When you visit the sheriff ’s office, you will receive my undivided attention behind closed doors. I am a working sheriff. I carry a gun and badge and patrol the roads of Hamblen County . As mentioned previously, I also investigate crime with my officers. I use a common sense approach to dealing with people and in my every day duties. My educational background and extensive experience pre-pared me to make the right decisions concerning com-plex issues of law and management that are inherent to the role of sheriff. I consider it an honor and privilege to have served you over the past four years, and I look forward to the opportunity to do so again. I have given you professionalism, accountability, integrity, and honesty as promised. I am asking for your contin-ued support and vote. It has been an honor to serve as your Sheriff and will be an even greater honor to continue to serve for the next 4 years. My wife and I have put our two sons through college on a lawman’s paycheck. I know the value of a dollar and how to man-age money. My OPEN DOOR policy will certainly continue with my commitment in returning all phone calls. I will con-tinue to find ways of saving our tax collars during these uncertain times. Again, I appreciate your continued sup-port and your vote in re-election.

A Vote For Me Is A Vote For You!

Paid political ad for Ernie Burzell. Joe Downs, Treasurer

Ernie Burzellcandidate forSheriffI am Ernie Burzell and I am running for Hamblen County Sheriff. A change is needed within the Hamblen County Sheriff ’s Department and with your support and your vote I will see that those changes are made.

These needed changes include, but are not limited to, bringing back integrity, implementing fairness and ex-tending the Hamblen County Sheriff Department’s com-mitment to the entire population of Hamblen County ~ three issues that have blatantly fallen by the wayside. A vote for Ernie Burzell is a vote for what’s best for Ham-blen County and the Sheriff ’s Department.

Why Vote for Ernie Burzell as Your Sheriff? With more than 20 years experience in law enforcement, I have worked my way through the ranks, thus giving me first-hand knowledge of what it takes to run a successful

department, both efficiently and economically. Dur-ing my time at the department, I have developed a positive rapport with agencies and organizations within Hamblen, as well as surrounding counties. I am a strong believer in dedication, loyalty and commit-ment and throughout my time with the department, I have established a strong working relationship with my fellow officers, a relationship based on mutual respect.

My wife, Donna and I, are life-long residents of Ham-blen County and as such I have an intrinsic desire to see that this county is safe-guarded and that all my fel-low citizens are treated with the respect they deserve, no matter their social ranking.

As the Democratic candidate for Hamblen County Sheriff, I ask for your vote during the May 2010 primary.

My name is Scott Cline. I’ve had an ongoing back problem for several years. After trying many forms of treatment for my lower back pain, I had a consultation with Dr. Mike Kirk. He suggested I try acupuncture for my back problems. To my amazement, after only two treatments I could already tell a tremendous difference in my level of pain. Because of this, I have chosen to schedule weekly visits and I continue to feel better every day. I have also used the decompression tableas a part of my treatment along with my acupuncture and it has proved to be a tremendous help. I frequently recommend to others acupuncture and the other treatments offered at Kirk & Kirk Health Clinic. I have found Dr. Kirk and his staff to be very dependable as well as very caring for all their patients.May God bless you,Scott Cline

“I wish you had more time!” This was the last thing I remember as I was leaving my Dad’s house, for what turned out to be the last time I’d see him alive. These words were a quote from one of my favorite movies! I can still hear the movie playing on his t.v., as he stood there looking at me with tears in his eyes, wearing a white linen summer shirt, and faded pair of blue jeans with sandals. I was walking out the door as I heard the quote, shortly after hearing my Dad tell me he loved me! I remember having to fight back the tears as I left that day. A little over a week later (9/5/2005), my Dad passed away, and that movie quote has stayed with me ever since and in some ways has defined me, and made me more proactive in telling those I care about how I feel about them everyday.

In 1993, my Dad, Michael L. Greene, along with my Mom, Susan H. Greene, and my grandparents, Luke and Agnes Greene and Mary Harrison Hodge started a small independent pharmacy named, “Greene’s Dis-count Pharmacy”. The desire was to make this phar-macy a strong family owned operation, priding itself in serving everyone in the Hamblen County community equally, with respect and without prejudice, while pro-viding the best possible prescription costs and fastest service available in the area!

In 2005, when my Dad passed away, my brother, Jer-emy L. Greene, my sister, Julie A. Greene, and myself were given rights to a portion of the pharmacy my parents and grandparents started. However, it took us almost five years, and a very long, painful, and un-fortunate legal process to acquire back the pharmacy, in its entirety and now that we have, we couldn’t be happier and we look forward to continuing what our parents and grandparents began back in 1993.

To give you a little insight, and background, on the three new owners of Greene’s Discount Pharmacy, LLC, I am Jason Greene, a devoted, loving father, who en-joys spending time with my family, and I am also an avid, but not so great golfer! I have a B.A. degree

in Management/Communication, and previously worked as an application specialist/production manager for a mar-keting company for nine years before coming back to Morristown to assume the co-responsibility of managing our pharmacy. In addition, I also provide personal training services for people who want to lose weight, or get into better shape!

My brother, Jeremy, has a B.S. degree in Microbiology, and has worked for sev-eral years as a personal trainer and fit-ness manager for a Knoxville area health club. Jeremy also has over eight years of previous pharmacy experience, work-ing with our Dad, and knows all of the ins and outs of the business and will be co-managing the pharmacy with me.

Jeremy’s interests are sports, weight-training, and being a great brother and uncle!

My sister, Julie, had a B.S. degree in nurs-ing, and currently lives in Washington, D.C., working for a children’s hospital! Although, she will not be assisting in the day-to-day management of our phar-macy, her presence and involvement is always encouraged and welcome! She is currently working to get in to graduate school, and enjoys spending her free time traveling to other countries to help

out those less fortunate.

The vision of our company, Greene’s Discount Pharmacy, LLC, is simple... We want to grow by serving you! When you walk through the doors of our pharmacy, you will be greeted with a smile, and treated with respect! We will give you the best price we can, fill your prescriptions as quickly as we can, and we will make the extra effort our standard! Uncompromising prices, uncompromising stan-dards, and uncompromising service is our guarantee, and we are currently exploring expansion projects, developing and implementing strict quality guidelines and standards, training and building a great pharmacy team, and making several immediate enhancements, which include on line prescription transmission via doctor’s offices, and a new P.O.S. (Point Of Sale) system, to ensure you are walking in to the best pharmacy in town!

Allow us to serve you!Greene’s Discount Pharmacy (423) 585-5187809 West 4th North Street

Lakeway Regional Celebrates Five Year Anniversary of

The community and Lakeway Regional Hospital have seen so much success from Healthy Woman, that the hospital now offers two other free programs called Healthy Living and Men’s Tune Up.

Healthy Living, inspired by Healthy Woman, is a free ed-ucational seminar in both Sneedville and White Pine.

“We felt it was important to expand our program to the communities around us, as we want to be the Healthcare provider not only for Hamblen County, but also for surrounding counties,” said Priscilla Mills, CEO at Lakeway Regional Hospital.

Men’s Tune Up is a free bi-monthly health – related program. With the success of the Healthy Woman Program, men started requesting educational pro-grams for themselves. Lakeway Regional stepped up to the plate and developed the Men’s Tune Up pro-gram which focuses on men’s healthcare issues.

“There was speculation that men would not come out for the program, but they have proved that they are interested in their health. We currently have about 80 men who attend the bi-monthly luncheons,” said Mills. “The joy about all of these programs is that we provide a free lunch to all who attend. So not only are we educating our community, but we are providing them a time of fellowship and fun,” said Brittany Johns, Marketing Director at Lakeway Regional Hospital.

Healthy Woman membership is free. It currently has an outstanding 2,600 members and growing. The mem-bers expand from Morristown to all surrounding areas like Russeville, Jefferson City, Bulls Gap and more.

To find out more about the free programs offered by Lakeway Regional Hospital, please visit www.lakeway-regionalhospital.com.

Five years ago, Lakeway Regional Hospital kicked off its first Healthy Woman event in April of 2005. The mis-sion was and continues to be “to empower women to make educated and informed healthcare decisions for themselves and their families.”

The first Healthy Woman luncheon had about 50 women in attendance and quickly grew at a rapid rate. Currently, the average attendance at the monthly programs is 250.

Healthy Woman empowers women of all ages. The program has educated women on a variety of health topics, such as Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cardiology, Otolaryngology, stress management, sports medicine, and more. Healthy Woman has also informed women about healthy eating habits, exercise, diabetes and sleep disorders. The program usually ends the year with a fun luncheon, like “decorating for the holidays.”

“Healthy Woman has meant so much to me because it informs me, keeps me up-to-date on health issues, and it also gives me the opportunity to meet new people and find a physician that’s right for me,” said Peggy Basinger, Healthy Woman member.

“I am so honored that women take time out of their busy lives to attend our monthly luncheons. This is such a valuable service we provide to the community and I am proud to be a part of this program. If we can help one person prevent, detect or cure an illness for them-selves or their family, it has all been worthwhile,” stated Priscilla Mills CEO.
