Dear Members,
In my first communication for
News Notes as President of
the BSA, I am honored and
pleased to be serving the
Baltimore Symphony
Associates in support of our
staff, the generous, skilled
and dedicated members of the
BSA and our foundational
purpose, the Community
Education programs of the
renowned BSO orchestra. This
fall, our 75th anniversary will
be celebrated on October 5th
with an evening filled with
exquisite music, reflections of
our past and the promise of a
future of opportunities for all.
I hope many will join us in
celebrating this significant
milestone. Throughout the year we will
continue to present Family
Concert luncheons, host the
second Kitchens of Note, our
new and exciting one day
fundraising tour, work
diligently to identify and
contract for the 2018
Symphony Decorators’
Show House, continue
efforts to successfully usher
thousands of the metropolitan school children
in and out of the Joseph Meyerhoff
Symphony Hall for orchestra performances,
sponsor learning venues for adults, as well as
continue to work with OrchKids, the Baltimore
Symphony Youth Orchestra and Side by Side
programs, to name just few of our volunteer
opportunities. Thanks go to all of you for your tireless
volunteer work to benefit the BSO Education
Programs and our children and to sustain the
BSA as a respected volunteer organization. We will keep you posted with informational
email blasts. Please keep in touch by volunteering
and attending our Quarterly Membership
Meetings. Have a great summer and enjoy good health!

The 2017 Annual Meeting of the BSA was held
on June 4 at the L’Hirondelle Club in Ruxton.
About 50 BSA members and guests attended
and enjoyed a delicious lunch.
At the meeting, outgoing President Sandy Feldman
presented a $50,000 donation from the BSA to the
educational programs of the BSO. CEO Peter
Kjome thanked the BSA for the donation and for its
advocacy of music education for youth.
Peter also drew the winning ticket for the 50-50
raffle featured at the Decorators’ Show House.
Winner J. Rooney will receive a check for $2,643.
Sandy took the opportunity to outline the BSA’s
activities over the past year. She thanked
members of the Board and the various committee
chairs who helped make the year a success. Some
activities that are already planned for next year
include a project to improve the furnishings in the
Musicians’ Lounge at the Meyerhoff, a 75th
Anniversary Celebration of the BSA on October 5,
and the second Kitchens of Note fundraiser on
October 18.
The meeting concluded with a bassoon solo by
Vincent Igusa, Baltimore County Schools’ Young
Soloist of the Year.

AT THE BALLET
On June 11, a group of BSA members and friends traveled to the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. to see the New York City Ballet. Before the show they enjoyed a docent-led tour of the Center and were fortunate enough to meet Greg Russell, General Manager of the NYC Ballet, whose mother was a Juilliard classmate and friend of the event coordinator Helene Breazeale. The attendees thoroughly enjoyed this very entertaining day.

ANNUAL APPRECIATION LUNCHEON
On Flag Day, June 14, 2017, the BSA held its Annual Appreciation Luncheon for the BSO Musicians and Staff. Planned for 160 people in all, everyone enjoyed the wonderful food from Santoni’s and the desserts provided by the BSA Board. Welcoming comments were made by Peter Kjome, Marin Alsop, Barbara Bozzutto and Marguerite Walsh.
Together with BSO bassist, Jonathan Jensen, luncheon chair Helene Breazeale, BSA VP for Special Services and Events, and audio technician Brandon Breazeale devised a game entitled “Famous Last Chords” to challenge the musicians to identify ten 10-second clips of orchestral music. Jensen chose the selections. Prizes included small trophies, stuffed animals saying, “I am a winner,” and a “winner” ribbon to wear around the neck of each correct responder. A good time was had by all!
We are pleased to announce our second year of “KITCHENS of NOTE & SYMPHONY OF CHEFS” to be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. This year’s driving tour will be held in the elegant neighborhood of Laurelford. We will have six spectacular kitchens with a celebrated chef in each kitchen; some of the chefs are returning from last year to provide all of our guests with delicious food tastings. We will have the dining room or kitchen tables designed by several of our most creative interior designers. Floral designers will provide an exquisite centerpiece to complement the table settings. How can you help? See the HELP WANTED ad on page 10! This year we are planning a Pre-Event Party as an additional fundraiser. Party attendees will receive their program book, tour admittance bracelet, enjoy a cocktail party and much more. Details for the party will follow. Please visit our web site www.kitchensofnote.org to take a peek at last year’s successful tour.

40TH DECORATOR SHOW HOUSE
MAYFAIR 2017
The BSA concluded a successful Show House, which
began on April 23 with a week of private parties and
ended on Sunday May 21. Mayfair, a large and historic
estate dating back to the 1700’s, was transformed into
a beautiful and contemporary home by our very
talented designers. Visitors were treated to an
extensive tour of the home informed by commentary
from our volunteer docents, the café run by Chef’s
Expressions Caterers served delicious food and we
offered the trifecta of shopping experiences – Encore,
our resale shop, the Boutique with a variety of vendors
and Decorator Sales for those who wanted to purchase
items from the house.
BSO CEO Peter Kjome and his wife Kristen Morrison cut the
ribbon to open the Show House as Sandy Feldman looks on
While the books are not officially closed yet and we
don’t have final financial results, we do know that the
house was well-received by our visitors. Many people
stated that Mayfair rated among their favorite show
houses — quite a compliment to the work done by the
20 designers who participated. The design spaces,
which were featured in local papers and on TV, were
both stunning and very livable at the same time.
Mother Nature was our biggest challenge. The few
days of unseasonably hot weather during the Show
House run meant that some rooms in the house, café
and boutique were quite warm. The Encore shop
located in the garage was a welcome refuge on these
hot days. And then there was the rain...which caused
torrential water and mud flows in the boutique tent.
We soldiered on with squishy flooring and wet shoes,
workers and guests alike. As the saying goes, ‘When the
going gets tough, the tough go shopping!’ Hats off to
the visitors, volunteers, and vendors who braved these
less than ideal circumstances.
Boutique Chair and vendor Constance Scott
Of course, Mayfair presented many more pleasant
events. There were several successful private parties
before we opened to the public, as well as a reception
for past show house chairs. On Mothers’ Day, musicians
from the BSO played for our guests in different rooms in
the house.
BSO musicians serenading Show House visitors on Mother’s Day
One of the visitors to Mayfair was Susan Tabatsko who
has attended the last 39 Show Houses. She missed the
first one because she was pregnant and wasn’t feeling
well but attended the following year and has not missed
one since. Susan used to live in the Westminster area
![Page 5: Helene Br - Amazon S3 game entitled “Famous Last hords” to challenge the ... There will be displays in the lobby, a presentation from the stage, and a reception in honor of the](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051722/5aa3a8b57f8b9aa0108edba5/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
but relocated to Deale, Maryland many years ago.
Although Deale is in southern Anne Arundel County,
Susan ritually makes the trip to the Show House – and
always buys something at Decorator Sales so that she
has a memento from every house!
Loyal attendee Susan Tabatsko
The co-chairs of Mayfair — Barbara Kelly, Carolyn
Stadfeld, and Barbara Dent — were fortunate to have
an excellent committee to work with to make the event
a success. Thanks go out to these committee members
as well as the scores of BSA members who volunteered
at Mayfair — both inside and outside the house. Your
willingness to help with Mayfair was what made it all
possible.

House closing – time to exhale!
MAYFAIR THROUGH THE YEARS
While many Show Houses are replete with history,
Mayfair’s own history came alive during the run of the
show. Current owners Scott and Heather Vogel are the
son (one of three) and daughter-in-law of the Vogels
who bought Mayfair in 1972. As they toured the
finished Show House, Scott talked about his memories
growing up there, riding minibikes with his brothers
down the mile-long driveway, which was called
Landstreet and extended all the way to York Road.
Mayfair acreage included a working farm tended by Mr
Burton, whose son Bob and his family still sell produce
at the entrance to Mays Chapel during the spring and
summer. The estate was the scene of many parties and
family celebrations for decades, as well as the surprise
landing of a big red hot-air balloon that had been blown
off course from the Preakness festival. The Vogel
family greeted the unplanned guests with champagne
and then all had an impromptu picnic.
Scott also recalled meeting the family of Dianna Yeager
Rankin who lived at Mayfair before the Vogels. Dianna
now lives out of town but made a special trip to
Maryland with her daughter to see the Show House at
Mayfair. Dianna, as a newborn in 1944, was christened
in the living room of Mayfair. Her grandparents owned
the farm, which then was 500 acres, and raised
thoroughbreds for the race track and show ring. Dianna
remembers riding her horse through the open fields
that are now filled with homes and apartments.
Both families met each other at Mayfair during the
Show House and agreed that Mayfair was a very magical
place to grow up.

Travels of an AMSOV Board of Directors Member
Marge Penhallegon, Secretary, 2015-2017
I was elected Secretary of the AMSOV Board at the
Philadelphia Conference in March of 2015. The
AMSOV Board of Directors gathers four times in
face-to-face meetings during the two-year
biennium. This is a wonderful opportunity for the
Board members to visit other cities, symphonies,
and volunteer groups. At each site, we are treated
to a concert by the Symphony of that city, are
entertained by volunteers, have the opportunity to
meet with staffs of the Symphonies and usually are
allowed a tour of the concert hall. It is a great
opportunity for sharing and gleaning ideas to help
all of our organizations.
For the 2015-2017 biennium, the Board met in the
following cities:
November, 2015 – Washington DC – Kennedy
Center, National Symphony Volunteer Organization
hosting.
April 2016 – San Francisco, CA – Davies Symphony
Hall, San Francisco Symphony Volunteer
Organization hosting.
September, 2016 – Dallas, TX – Morton Meyerson
Symphony Center, Dallas Symphony Volunteer
Organization hosting.
March 2017 – Kansas City, MO – Kauffman Center
for the Performing Arts, Kansas City Volunteer
Organization hosting.
In between these meetings, we conducted business
via conference calls, and our final meetings took
place at the 2017 Conference in Los Angeles. For
the next biennium, a new AMSOV Board will have
the same opportunities in other amazing cities.
SAVE the DATE – the AMSOV 2019
Conference will be April 25-28, 2019 in
Dallas, TX.

ASSOCIATION OF MAJOR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA VOLUNTEERS
BIENNIUM CONFERENCE IN LOS ANGELES
MAY 4-7 2017
Attending an AMSOV Conference provides enormous personal benefits that enhance each volunteer organization. AMSOV is the only association that focuses solely on Volunteer Leadership Development. This year, Carolyn Stadfeld attended as our BSA Delegate and Marge Penhallegon attended as Secretary of the National Board of Directors of AMSOV.
HIGHLIGHTS OF AMSOV 2017 LOS ANGELES
Orchestrating Success - The theme of the conference was to maximize opportunities for Delegates to strengthen their leadership and personal skills, while interacting with other like-minded Volunteer Leaders of major symphony orchestras.
Conference Hotel - The Conference Hotel was the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, an elegant 1923 landmark that is beautifully restored. Morning sessions were in the Emerald Room, while the elegant Gold Room was the setting for the Opening Night Red Carpet Gala.
Venues - The intent was to use venues that the average tourist could not enter, such as the California Club; The Jonathan Beach Club; The Dorothy Chandler Founders Room; and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Fifth Floor.
Special Dinner - Friday evening, all Delegates and Guests were bussed to the sandy beaches of Santa Monica to visit the private Jonathan Beach Club. There, we enjoyed a "Sunset Fiesta" to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, with a mariachi band and a classical guitarist.
Performers - The charismatic Gustavo Dudamel conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Walt Disney Concert Hall, an iconic hall noted for its unique design and acoustic excellence. Other artists included Denis Bouriakov, principal flute of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and students from the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA), which is based on Venezuela’s El Sistema, as is our BSA OrchKids program.
Speakers - Some of the most acclaimed citizens of the Los Angeles area were speakers, such as: --Peter Sellars, Distinguished Professor, Dept of World Arts and Cultures/Dance at UCLA
--Deborah Borda, Current President/CEO of the LA Philharmonic. Later this year, Ms. Borda will become the new President/CEO of the New York Symphony --Gil Garcetti, Former District Attorney for LA County and now a photographer --Juliet Funt, CEO of WhiteSpace at Work Consulting --Craig Watson, Director of the California Arts Council --Cathy Alessandra, author of “Yes, I Can.”
State of the Arts Panel - Gail Eichenthal, Executive Producer of Classical KUSC, served as moderator for panelists --Martha Gilmer, San Diego Symphony Orchestra CEO --Grant Gershon, Artistic Director of the LA Master Chorale --Ann Mulally, Member of the Board of the LA Chamber Orchestra.
Roundtable Discussions - We continued the "Getting to Know Us" interactive workshop, concentrating on what is being done that is new and different in Membership Recruitment and Retention; Leadership Development; and Fundraising and Legacy Giving. For details, click the link for AMSOV Roundtables Best-Practices Discussions.
Optional Tours - A Pre-Conference Tour explored the famous homes and landmarks of Hollywood. The Post-Conference Tour visited the Huntington Library, Art Collection, and Botanical Gardens.
In between all these great events were business meetings and elections of the AMSOV Board of Directors for the biennium 2017-2019. Our own Carolyn Stadfeld has been elected to the positions of Membership/Directory and Outreach. Congratulations to Carolyn!

SAYING FAREWELL TO LOUISE REINER
Louise Reiner, the BSA Office Manager for the past
eight years, is retiring this summer. During her
tenure, Louise has truly been one of our
organization’s biggest assets and advocates. She
has given unstintingly of herself in organizing the
office, updating the old and instituting new
computer programs/processes and has provided
superior customer service to our members and all
others who contact us. In addition to doing all this,
as a BSA member, she has regularly volunteered
her time at the store, special events and much
more.
Louise with outgoing president Sandy Feldman and gifts of appreciation
We will miss Louise’s regular presence in the office
and the extra mile she has always gone. At the
same time we look forward to her continued
involvement with our organization as an active
volunteer and leader.
Many thanks to Louise for her years of wonderful
service to the BSA.
THE BSA USHERING PROGRAM
Volunteer ushers worked 56 performances this
season and contributed over 1500 hours to ensure
that the music of the BSO was enjoyed by students
and adults from throughout the metropolitan area.
Audiences ranged in age from infants to senior
citizens and included thousands of students from
area schools. In addition to programs performed
by the BSO, several special performances featured
students from the BSYO and area school systems.
To continue this major project of the BSA in
support of the BSO, join us by signing up for the
upcoming season. Volunteer opportunities will be
published by the end of the summer. Come, enjoy
the music, and help develop the performers and
audiences of our future.
Let folks know about the BSA and all of the wonderful things that we do!
If you know a friend, relative, coworker, or anyone else who might be interested in joining the BSA, contact the BSA Office Manager ([email protected] or 410.783.8023). She will be happy to send them an information packet and membership form. The more members we have, the more we can do to support the BSO!

REMEMBERING MAURICE FELDMAN
Maurice Feldman was a member of the BSA for more
than 30 years, although his special connection to the
BSO goes all the way back to the beginning of his life
- his Mother was one of the first female members of
the orchestra. Maurice was a BSA Board member and
very active with the Mid-Week Concerts Series
Ushering Program. In addition, he served on the
Education Committee of the Baltimore Symphony
Orchestra, offering valuable assistance and counsel to
the Education Department of the BSO regarding
programming for young people.
He was President of the BSA from 1999-2001, the
first male president of the organization. In 2003,
when a Show House Chair was needed, Maurice
offered to take the job of President again so then
President Carol Minkin (O’Connell) could take on the
task of SDSH Chair.
Maurice was invested in the volunteer work of the
BSA and attended several AMSOV Conferences to
keep current regarding Arts Volunteering.
Maurice began his career with United States Army
Field Band, Washington, D.C. Following his military
service, he was an Instrumental Music Teacher and
Supervisor for Baltimore County Public Schools for 30
years.
In the more recent past, Maurice served as chief
advisor to Sandy Feldman, President from 2014-2017.
Everyone who knew Maurice will miss his friendly
style, his caring for others, and his love of music and
Sandy.
Dear BSA Members,
A sincere thank you to all who sent condolences to
me during the past eight months following the death
of Chris and also following the death of my son,
Jason. Your kindnesses, love and prayers have
sustained me through this unbelievable time in my
life.
