Dear Friends,

Dear Friends,

Fifteen years ago this past summer ago, while caught up in a

turbulent swirl of change, I wrote the following poem. With all the

changes happening in and around us now, I offer this again as a kind

of platform for your own meditation and prayer.

May God’s blessings and peace be with us all.

Peace,

Allen

Newness

When newness like some bright-faced dandelion

Blooms through broken concrete underfoot,

Who can but celebrate the maverick,

Weed-like stubbornness of grace?

Who else would dare to sow

Life’s precious seed in hopeless ground

and never doubt the harvest?

Yet when grace pours out newness

Like fresh wine, old skins disintegrate,

and spill the gift.

Wrapped close as skin around us,

The treasured ways and means of faith

Had sealed us in the Covenant.

Then says the Word Incarnate:

“New skins must hold new wine.”

This flaying grace we call salvation,

How it falls upon us first as ruin!

For these new skins of which our Savior speaks

Threaten neither hide nor hair of thoughtless beast.

It is our own saved skins

For which Christ lives and dies and lives anew.

Our beating, bleating hearts alone

Are fit to hold his precious wine.
