Longitudinally profiled plates

Dillinger Hütte GTS has aparticularly clever solution forstructures with locally varyingload exposure, such as bridgegirders: Longitudinally profiledplates, i.e., plates with a thicknesswhich varies along the longitudi-nal axis.

These products help to saveweight and welding costs, partic-ularly where the design demandsadapted thicknesses of plate, dueto varying bending moments.

Dillinger Hütte GTS can supplyall structural steels up to a speci-fied minimum yield strength of460 MPa in the form of longitu-dinally profiled plate in as-rolledor normalized delivery state.These products can be providedin the most diverse range of pro-file types.

Cut-to-lenght flange plates

Dillinger Hütte GTS suppliestailor-made flange plates, partic-ularly in the dimensions typicalin heavy steel constructions.These products assist our cus-tomers in relieving the load ontheir fabrication facilities andreducing unproductive scrap.

Flange plates can be supplied,in particular, in all commongrades used in structural steelengineering.

On request, we can also provideweld-edge preparation to yourspecification.

Roll-bonding clad plate

Dillinger Hütte GTS can supplyroll-bonding clad plate in theform of dual or triple laminatesteel with a wear-proof and/orcorrosion-proof surface layer.

Dillinger Hütte GTS suppliesheavy plates in a large range ofsteel grades, to internationalstandards, as special brand-named steel grades and to cus-tomer’s own specifications.Page 21 ff. shows a list of thegrades available. The DimensionTables starting on Page 32 showthe plate thicknesses, widths andlengths available in each case.Please note that these pages showonly standard products; othergrades and formats are availablein most cases.

Form, dimensions and surface quality

Dillinger Hütte GTS heavy plateis supplied in conformity withinternationally valid standardsfor technical delivery conditions.As far as dimensional, geomet-rical and weight tolerances areconcerned, for example, we sup-ply in conformity with EN 10029,ASTM A6, ASTM A20,ISO 7452 and a number ofother widely used standards.

Tolerances tighter than thosespecified in these standards canalso be agreed.

The surface quality of our heavyplates meets the conditions ofEN 10163 or other internationalstandards. More demandingsurface quality requirements canbe agreed.

Marking of plates

All plates produced at DillingerHütte GTS are marked by meansof a steel stamp or paint code.Other forms of identification canalso be agreed.

The stamp always contains notless than the following informa-tion: The code for the steel desig-nation, the parent and individualplate number, and the manufac-turer’s symbol.

The standard paint code includesimportant data such as parentand individual plate number, theworks identification code, works

order and item number, and theorder dimensions, stating width,length and thickness.

Additional markings specified bythe customer can also be appliedto the top surface of the plate.Sealing of the paint markingswith a clear coat is possible onagreement. Paint barcode mark-ings can also be agreed for colourmarking on the plate edges.

If stamping or standard codemarking is not required in thecase of special surface qualityrequirements, their omissionmust be agreed when the order is placed.

Shot blasting and primer coating

We perform surface treatment of plates by order. The plates aredescaled using steel shot onautomatic shot-blasting descal-ing machines; Surface CleanlinessClassification SA 2 1/2 as per ISO 8501 is the standard surfacefinish.

In addition, temporary fabrica-tion coatings (shop primer) canbe applied to your plates.

The most commonly used typesare as follows:

■ Zinc dust epoxy primer■ Iron oxide epoxy primer■ Ethyl silicate primer

The compatibility of the primerwith the characteristics of thefinal top coat for the end productmust be taken into account whenselecting a primer.

Additional properties

Sometimes, demands outside the scope of the standard for theparticular grade, are made on aheavy plate. We examine below a number of the most frequentrequests and the solutionDillinger Hütte GTS offers:

■ Low carbon equivalentsLow carbon equivalents canbe agreed with DillingerHütte GTS in order toimprove the plate's suitabilityfor certain processing opera-tions. In many cases, theplate’s content of other ele-ments can also be individuallyadjusted.

■ High resistance to HydrogenInduced Cracking (HIC)Dillinger Hütte GTS cansupply homogeneous HICresistance throughout theplate in DICREST pressurevessel steels and also inlinepipe grades. Proof, in theform of the so-called HICtest, is furnished in confor-mity with NACE TM 0284.DICREST plates are alsoavailable ex stock.

■ Defined resistance to SulfideStress Cracking (SSC)In addition to the HIC test,Dillinger Hütte GTS suppliesSSC resistant steels, ifrequested. The SSC test isusually executed in confor-mity with NACE TM 0177,Test Method A.

■ Certified insensitivity toembrittlement in CrMo-alloyed pressure vessel steels Extremely low values can beagreed with Dillinger HütteGTS for the best known long-term embrittlementindicators, the Watanabe or J factor and the Bruscator or X factor.Proof of insensitivity toembrittlement via the so-called step-cooling test ispossible on agreement.

■ Laser-cutting propertiesIn cooperation with machinemanufacturers and specialistlaser-cutting companies,Dillinger Hütte GTS hasdeveloped the range ofDICUT steels, which are spe-cially optimized for laser cut-ting. These steels have beendesigned for achievement ofhigh cut-edge quality even athigh cutting speeds. This isassured by means of a spe-cially adjusted chemical com-position, a special surfacequality, high flatness and low residual stresses. See theDICUT specifications formore detail.

■ Special flatness tolerancesExtremely narrow flatnesstolerance bands are frequentlyspecified for thick, heavy andwide plates, particularly whenrequired for mechanical andplant engineering purposes.The DIPLAN specificationwas developed precisely forthese exacting requirements,which go beyond the valuesstipulated in the EN 10029standard. Detailed infor-mation can be found in theDIPLAN specifications.

■ Special surface qualityThe specifications OFL-C,OFL-L and OFL-S containdetailed information for spe-cial surface quality require-ments, such as those for platefor use in processing equip-ment engineering, lifting arms for building machinery,and formwork shuttering forvisible concrete elements.

■ Suitability for zinc-plating and galvanizingRestrictions on chemicalcomposition can be agreed inaccordance with (for instance)prEN 10025-3, Class 1, 2 or 3for this special processingoperation.

■ Special qualificationsProof of the suitability ofour plate by means of qualifi-cation and registration arerequired in a number of sec-tors. These are already avail-able for the most commonlyused steels and can be pro-vided. Performance of therelevant analyses prior to orduring an ongoing projectcan be agreed in individualcases.

■ Other additional requirementsOther additional require-ments can be agreed and areimplemented in accordancewith the majority of widelyused standards, such as Zproperties (EN 10164), clean-liness tests (DIN 50602) and ultrasonic inspection (EN 10160, etc., please alsosee the ”Ultrasonic inspec-tion” section, Page 13).

In the Heavy Fabrication Divisionat Dillingen plates can be furtherprocessed and shaped.

Our customers are always glad of the opportunity of using ourdownstream fabrication serviceswhen their own processingcapacities and capabilities are ator near their limits. The range of services thus augments theirfabrication capabilities andexpands their own product andservice range.

The Heavy Fabrication Divisionessentially offers the followingoperations:

■ High-accuracy heavy-platecutting (thermal cutting andgrinding)

■ Hot or cold forming –depending on the ultimateproduct, dimensions andintended use – of thick-walledlarge-format plate to formshell sections, vessel headsand other pressed compo-nents, in boiler and pressure-vessel engineering, in par-ticular

■ Welding of shell sections

■ Heat treatment of shell sec-tions, vessel heads and otherpressed components.

Heavy plates with individualweights of up to 50 t can be cutwith high dimensional accuracyon our coordinate-drive flame-cutting machines. This serviceaugments the capabilities of SteelService Centers. The ”Contacts”section on Page 38 ff. contains a list of Steel Service Centerswithin the Dillinger Hütte group.

Edges ready for welding can beapplied even to large-formatplates at economic cost using our plate-edge grinder unit.Typical users of ground plateinclude:

■ Pressure vessel and tankconstructors

■ Structural steel engineers,including use as structural ele-ments in steel and compositebridges, for example

■ Mechanical engineers

■ Offshore engineering

Edge-machined plates can alsobe supplied rolled to specificradii and paint coated. Thismakes it possible to deliver theplates directly to the job site for immediate use.

Our four-roll bending machine isone of the world's most power-ful. It permits cold forming ofcylindrical shell sections up to a

section length of 4300 mm and in thicknesses over 200 mm.Hot forming permits productionof shell sections with wall thick-nesses greater than 400 mm.

The extremely wide and heavyplates produced by our rollingmill can be shaped on ourpressing plant facilities to makeone-piece, weld-free vessel headswith diameters up to 4500 mmand wall thicknesses of around200 mm.Hemispherical heads can bemade in this way up to a diame-ter of approximately 3500 mm.Pressings of the most diversetypes are designed and producedin accordance with our cus-tomers’ requirements.

Like our staff, our productionand fabrication equipment andprocedures conform with therequirements of both Europeanand international standards andcodes of practice. Heavy Fabrica-tion Division is a ASME stampholder (S, U, U2).

Production, inspection anddocumentation of products atDillinger Hütte GTS are all per-formed in conformity with thespecified requirements. The basisfor these activities is provided by national and internationalstandards and codes of practice,customers’ specifications and our own internal standards.The entire procedure for pro-duction of all our products isgoverned by planned series ofprocess operations and qualityinspections.

These production and inspectionschedules include both internaland contractually agreed provi-sions and, in particular, officialacceptance inspections. Standardchecks and reference points areintegrated into the productionsequence.

The individual production stagesand inspections are documentedstep-by-step, complete with theirresults, generally in our computersystem, and compared againstthe specification requirements.The status of order implementa-tion is therefore verifiable andtraceable at any time.

Quality Management System

Our Quality Management Systemis structured in accordance withISO 9001 and is correspondinglycertificated.In addition, Dillinger Hütte GTSalso possesses numerous othercertifications and registeredapprovals based on specific codesof practice, such as API, ASME,TÜV, DNV, LR, ABS, forexample, or on the special EUPressure Equipment Directive,97/23/EC.

Dillinger Hütte GTS’s chemistryand acceptance laboratories are accredited on the basis ofDIN EN ISO/IEC 17025.

Within the Group DillingerHütte, numerous organizationalunits and locations make up theessential components of ourintegrated QM system, e.g.:

Dillinger Hütte GTS’s processesand products are thereforesubject, from the enquiry to theshipment phase, to an all-embracing QM system designedto assure quality right up tohand-over to the customer.

Quality Control

Dillinger Hütte GTS steels arecontinually tested for adherenceto the data and characteristicsstipulated in the relevant codes,standards, material data sheetsand customer specifications.

Non-destructive tests on theplate itself during the flow ofproduction and destructive test-ing on specimens from the platein the inspection and testingdepartment are available forquality testing. Where no diver-gent conditions have beenagreed, verification of surfacequality is performed in accor-dance with the provisions ofEN 10163, and checking ofgeometry and dimensions inaccordance with EN 10029.

Ultrasonic inspection

Ultrasonic inspection is appliedto determine the internal qualityof our plate products, i.e.,absence of impermissible mater-ial segregations and inclusions.These inspections can be per-formed manually, using ultra-sonic (US) testing instruments or on an automatic ultrasonicheavy-plate inspection machine.The US inspection is performedto order. If correspondinglyspecified, these inspections canbe performed in accordance withboth national and internationalstandards, such as:

■ EN 10160

■ ASTM A 435, ASME SA 435

■ ASTM A 578, ASME SA 578

■ SEL 072

■ NF A 04-305 (current standard now NF EN 10160)

■ BS 5996 (current standard now BS EN 10160)

and all other standards andcustomer specifications on agree-ment.

All classifications for surface and sub-surface zones, and allcombinations of classificationsare possible. The scope of inspec-

tion defined in the particularspecification is applied as stan-dard procedure. Other scopes ofinspection for surface and sub-surface zones are also possible onrequest.

Our inspection staff is qualifiedand certified in accordance withSNT-TC-1A and/or EN 473.

Sample analysis

Spectral-analytical methods areused to check adherence to thesteel’s specified chemical compo-sition.

Specimens taken from the plateare submitted in the inspectionand testing department to arange of destructive test proce-dures. Simulated heat treatmentcycles can also be performed toorder on specimen material.Heat treatment procedures suchas normalizing, hardening, tem-pering, stress-relieving and softannealing can be implemented.

The tensile test (in conformitywith EN 10002, for example),the impact test (to EN 10045, forexample) and Brinell, Rockwelland Vickers hardness tests can all be applied for verification ofmechanical and technologicalproperties. In addition, metallo-graphical and corrosion-chemi-cal tests can also be performed(such as the HIC test in accor-dance with NACE TM0284, forexample).

Such tests can be conductedunder the supervision of externalinspectors if the inspection cer-tificate agreed requires this.

Inspection certificates

You will receive an inspectioncertificate in conformity withyour plate order. Various certifi-cate types, with differing scopes,are available (see table hereafter).

Our test certification proceduresmeet the requirements of thefollowing national and interna-tional standards: DIN EN 10204,NF EN 10204, BS EN 10204and ISO 10474. The content ofour inspection certificates is, inaddition, also coded in accor-dance with EURONORM168/EN 10168.

The units of measurement onour inspection certificates use theSI (Systeme International) basicunits, i.e., millimeters, kilograms,etc. Other units of measurementare also possible on request,however, e.g. inch, lbs. Inspec-tion certificates can be issued inGerman, French or English.These certificates can also besupplied by Telefax or E-mail.They are also available on theheavyplate.com service platformin the Internet.
