The holidays are behind us and the new year is here already! We live such hurried and fast paced lives, that spending time on self-care is rarely a thought. Consider what you can do to enjoy more moments of your day.

The Chronic Disease Prevention Programs are promoting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention message of, “Five minutes (or less) for Health.” There are many things you can do to help improve your health and safety in as little as fi ve minutes. Start with the resolution to give yourself the gift of time this new year.

Here are some examples of ways to take fi ve minutes for…

…YOUR BODY: Nourish your body with delicious whole foods you carefully select at your local market! Whole fresh foods in every meal support energy, better digestion and bowel health.

…YOUR DAY: Plan your day by writing the two top things you’d like to accomplish. Mark them off , as you get them done. That will keep you focused and on-track all day, and it will give you a sense of accomplishment when you get them done!

…YOUR MEALS: Take time to taste and enjoy the food you so thoughtfully put together! Give yourself at least 20 minutes of sitting time to enjoy each meal.

…YOUR FEET: Your feet take you everywhere! Return the favor by taking a few minutes at the end of the day to sit, take off your shoes and wiggle

your toes, just to see what it feels like. Those with chronic health conditions should check for red marks, sores, bumps or cuts. Use a mirror to check the soles of your feet, or ask someone to check for you. Report to your physician anything unusual. This is a good self-management skill to develop and to feel comfortable with.

YOUR LUNGS: Build your oxygen capacity! Remember to breathe. During stressful situations, our body tends to rely on chest breathing only. And, if you lead a hurried lifestyle, then this might be how you function all day. Shoulders and neck are usually tight. Try belly breathing by breathing deep in to your belly, then exhaling slowly through pursed lips. It takes a few tries, but after a while it will feel natural to you. Did you know that belly breathing is how babies breathe? So, it’s not a new skill, and it won’t take long to master.

¡Las fi estas navideñas han quedado atrás y el nuevo año ya está aquí! Vivimos vidas tan apresuradas, que dedicarle tiempo a nuestra salud es poco común. Considere lo que puede hacer para disfrutar de más momentos en el día.

Los Programas de Prevención de Enfermedades Crónicas se unen al mensaje de los Centros para el Control y La Prevención de Enfermedades, “Cinco minutos (o menos) para su salud.” En tan solo cinco minutos hay muchas cosas que usted puede hacer para ayudar a mejorar su salud y seguridad. Para comenzar, este año concédase el regalo del tiempo.

Estos son ejemplos de maneras como darse cinco minutos para…

…SU CUERPO: Alimente su cuerpo con el producto fresco que usted selecciona cuidadosamente en el mercado. Los alimentos frescos en cada comida le ayudaran a sentirse con energía, con mejor digestión y salud intestinal.

…SU DIA: Planee y anote al menos dos cosas por cumplir cada día. Al lograrlas, valla marcándolas una-por-una. Así se mantendrá enfocado y en el buen camino de haber logrado todo lo que se propuso. ¡Es una buena sensación poder cumplir sus metas al diario!

…SUS COMIDAS: Tómese el tiempo de probar y disfrutar de la comida que tan cuidadosamente prepara. Dese por lo menos 20 minutos para sentarse a comerla y disfrutarla.

…SUS PIES: Sus pies lo llevan a todos lados. Regréseles el favor con dedicarles unos minutos al fi nal del día. Primero, tome asiento para

quitarse los zapatos y ponerlos a un lado. Mire sus pies y mueva los dedos para ver cómo se siente. Las personas con enfermedades crónicas deben checar que no haya marcas rojas, llagas, bultos o cortadas. Con un espejo revise las plantas de sus pies. Si no es posible, pedirle a otra persona que lo revise y dejarle saber a su médico si encuentra algo fuera de lo normal. Esta es una buena práctica para el cuidado personal de su condición, que con el tiempo será más fácil de hacer.

…SUS PULMONES: Aumente su capacidad de oxígeno con respiraciones abdominales. En situaciones estresantes hay tendencias a respirar solamente desde la parte superior del pecho. Esto causa tensión en los músculos de la espalda o el cuello. Sí lleva un estilo de vida apresurado, tal vez es de la forma como usted funciona todo el día. Con las reparaciones abdominales, se inhala hacia el abdomen y se exhala lentamente a través de los labios. Le tomará algunos intentos. ¿Sabía usted que la respiración de vientre es como respiran los bebés? No es algo nuevo, y no le llevará mucho tiempo dominarlo.

To ensure that Winter Warming Shelter residents have access to assistance during the daytime when the shelter is closed, Community

Action of Ventura County (621 Richmond Avenue in Oxnard, 436-4000) will off er daytime services to shelter residents December 21st -

March 15th, 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. daily. Shelter residents may request free bus passes to Community Action, where laundry, shower, and social services will be available.
