HealthHCV aims to address hepatitis C (HCV) through:

■ Education and Training: deliver medical and consumer education and training programs to improve the ability of organizations, professionals, and individuals to address the needs of people with HCV.

■ Research and Evaluation: collect data and analyze outcomes by conducting health service research that identifies trends across HIV, hepatitis C, and the broader health care landscapes.

■ Advocacy: develop sound public health policy responsive to the shifting landscape of HCV and health care.

Providing relevant and comprehensive medical and consumer education on HCV screening, testing, and treatment remains a core focus of this initiative. HealthHCV will focus on new agents in development and capacity building to address screening and testing.

Hepatitis C surveillance at the national level is severely lacking. Current data are reported from the Enhanced Viral Hepatitis Surveillance Sites funded through the CDC Emerging Infections Program (EIP), which includes six states (CO, CT, MN, NM, NY, OR) and two cities (San Francisco, NYC). The lack of accurate data around HCV has impacted funding and guidance for HCV prevention, care, and treatment activities, as well as funding for comprehensive HCV research. Additionally, the absence of system preparedness to deal with increasing HCV caseloads will require targeted workforce development efforts.
