The SA health system is ripe for reform.

• Highest proportion of older people in Australia – projections show this trend continuing.

• Income levels are 9% below the national average and employment levels are lower than the national average – however, on a per capita basis, health expenditure is above the national average.

• More medical services, nursing staff and hospital beds per head than the national average.

• Outside of Adelaide the health of the population is poorer, particularly in rural agricultural areas.

• Indigenous death rates are more than 3 times those of the non-Indigenous population.

• Total health portfolio budget AUD$3.3b (USD$2.2b).

• Health sector accounts for 35% of the State’s budget today. This will grow to exceed 100% of the State’s budget by 2032 on current projections.

• Approx 33,000 staff – Doctors, Nurses, Allied Health Professionals, and career Public Servants.

• Hospitals– 83 public hospitals– 31 private hospitals– 22 free-standing day hospital facilities

Deliverable 2: Three leadership programs to support the implementation of Health LEADS.

• 3 Differentiated Programs– Executive LEADS– Clinical LEADS– Emerging LEADS

• Targeting 150 participants in Year 1– 50 executives– 50 clinicians and – 50 new leaders

• Participant numbers will be the same, or higher in Years 2 and 3

The leadership programs will build capability in the workforce by providing challenging development opportunities for its leaders which are specifically designed to equip them to improve performance, redesign services and take SA Health into the future.

The initial response to the program has been very good.

• The program was initially well received, with twice as many nominations as available places.• The first module for each program has been run.• Action learning projects are beginning to have impact in the organisation.• The Executive team is becoming more engaged with each cohort and the organisation is

developing an understanding of what it means to operate in genuine partnership.• The overarching program is forming links to the organisation’s embedded people management

systems.
