Introduction

Nutritious and healing recipes can be made from a variety of fresh whole foods, essential oils,

and herbs. In this booklet, we’ll explore the making of healing teas that can be used as a

base for smoothies, soups, and shakes, and introduce the process of making elixirs that

nourish, balance, and provide instant and sustained energy.

Elixirs are defined in many ways. They have been defined as magical or medicinal potions,

and sweetened liquids (usually containing alcohol and water) that serve as a vehicle for

medicine.

The elixirs we're going to create are definitely liquid, sweetened with low-glycemic sweeteners

like stevia, xylitol, or erythritol. The medicines that is contained within them are from powerful

herbs and superfoods. While there are hundreds of medicinal herbs and superfoods to

choose from in making super-charged beverages, we’ll focus on just a couple dozen, easy-to-

find, powerhouse plants that you can use in these recipes.

Herbs That Work Well in Elixirs

Aloe: Aloe is commonly used to treat sunburn and help promote healthy skin. The

inner part of the aloe leaf holds a gel, rich in polysaccharides, that helps to relieve the

digestive system plus also support the immune system. Aloe vera juice contains 20

minerals, 12 vitamins, 18 amino acids, and 200 specific compounds. Recent studies

have proven that the anti-inflammatory gel within aloe vera helps the body metabolize

sugars and even lowers glucose levels. Aloe vera lowers cholesterol and triglycerides

so that you can rebalance your blood chemistry.

Ashwagandha: An adaptogenic herb, ashwagandha has a reputation for promoting

energy and preventing diseases. Studies have shown ashwagandha increases white

blood cells and other factors that show an improved immune system. Ashwagandha

has also been known to help regulate blood sugar, which also aids in curbing cravings

for sweets. As an aid for the endocrine system, ashwagandha could also help your

body produce its own thyroid hormones. Some studies seem to show that

ashwagandha has a positive effect on the endocrine, cardio, and central nervous

system.

Astragalus: Well known as an immune tonic, astragalus gently supports enhanced

protection against infections. Because of this immunostimulatory activity, it is

considered an adjunct to cancer therapies. Astragalus has antioxidant properties,

which helps with the cardiovascular system. It’s also an adaptogen and adrenal tonic

herb.

Carob: Although it is often used as a chocolate substitute, carob is not chocolate. It

doesn’t contain caffeine nor theobromine, which can be addictive and cause allergies

because they are stimulants. Because of this, people with high blood pressure will

benefit from consuming carob. The tannin in carob is gallic acid, which works as an

analgesic, anti-allergy, anti-bacterial, antioxidant, anti-viral, and antiseptic. The vitamin

E content in carob can help with treating the flu, coughs, anemia, and bone issues.

Carob also contains phosphorus and calcium, which also contributes to its ability to

help with osteoporosis.

Cayenne: Capsaicin is the main active component of cayenne. It is also a source of

vitamins A and C, the complete B vitamin complex, and is rich in calcium and

potassium, making it good for the heart. Cayenne has the ability to stimulate the

circulatory system, bringing fresh blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the heart and other

organs of the body. This also allows the hormonal signals to make their way through

your system, which will then boost your immune system. The same ingredients that

make it good for the circulatory system also help it to act as a catalyst for digestion.

Studies have also been shown that it can help lower blood sugar levels because of the

stimulation of the circulatory system.

Chamomile: Considered a relaxing herb, while it can help with sleep and relaxation,

the relaxation properties of chamomile extend beyond its use as a "sleepy time tea"

and into the realm of relaxation of muscles, both smooth and skeletal. This means

that chamomile can soothe and relax spasms in the digestive tract and is often used as

a remedy for diverticular disorders and irritable bowel conditions such as Crohn’s

disease. It will also help with stomach cramps as well as menstrual cramps. In the

Middle Ages, chamomile was used for asthma, colic, fevers, inflammations, nausea,

nervous complaints, children's ailments, and skin disease. Research has proven

chamomile to be anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-allergenic in addition to its

sedative properties.

Cinnamon: Commonly known to help people with diabetes metabolize sugar better,

cinnamon also helps with mild gastrointestinal spasms, stimulates the appetite, and

can help relieve indigestion. Studies have shown that cinnamon enhances the ability

of insulin to metabolize glucose, helping to control blood sugar levels. It contains the

antioxidant glutathione as well as a flavonoid called MHCP (methylhydroxy chalcone

polymer). Through the research, it has been found that cinnamon makes fat cells more

responsive to insulin. Cinnamon can also suppress the E.coli bacteria, which causes

urinary tract infections, as well as the fungus which creates candida albicans.

Gynostemma: An adaptogenic herb, and as such, gynostemma supports adrenal

function. It’s also antioxidant, immune modulating, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, anti-

ulcer, a respiratory tonic, platelet regulating, cholesterol regulating, liver and

cardiovascular protective, regulates blood pressure, triglyceride lowering, and it helps

break down and prevent clots. It also increases strength and stamina.

Horsetail: High in silica, horsetail thus helps build strong nails, hair, bones, and teeth.

Because silica is found in the adrenal glands, horsetail is also supportive of their

functioning. This same mineral also provides an aid as a detoxification support agent

for the heavy metal, aluminum. Horsetail is one of the most diuretic plants, so it helps

increase urine output, making it beneficial to consume when there is water retention

and urinary tract problems.

Licorice: One of my all-time favorite herbs, not only for its sweet taste, but also for the

benefits it has to several body systems. Its key therapeutic compound is glycyrrhizin,

which prevents the breakdown of the adrenal hormones, making them more available

to your body. Licorice is anti-inflammatory and has the ability to soothe and heal

damaged stomach and intestinal lining tissue. Because of its soothing and healing

properties, licorice has also been helpful for healing damaged respiratory tissue, and

it’s helpful for bronchitis and lung problems. The only downside, for some, is that

licorice can increase blood pressure and should be used with caution if you have a

history of high blood pressure. If you have excessively low blood pressure, licorice

is a great choice; just be careful to monitor and not overdo it and follow the

recommended dosage.

Maca: A South American herb, maca is effective for adrenal fatigue as well as other

steroid hormone imbalances. Maca improves adrenal function by nourishing your

hypothalamus and pituitary glands. It will relieve menstrual issues as well as

menopausal symptoms. It supplies iron and helps restore red blood cells, which helps

with anemic conditions. It is high in protein, natural sugars, iron, potassium, iodine,

magnesium, and calcium, which is why it is called a superfood.

Medicinal mushrooms: Reishi, chaga, cordyceps, maitake, and shiitake are excellent

immune system stimulators, and they have a good track record in preventing and

healing certain types of cancers. They are high in antioxidants and have been long

considered anti-aging, detoxifying, cardiovascular protective, digestive aids, and

soothing to the mind and spirit. Medicinal mushrooms can regenerate and protect the

liver. They are great sources of B vitamins, vitamin D, and protein. Shiitakes, in

particular, are also excellent sources of selenium, copper, iron, and vitamin C.

MSM: An abbreviation for methylsulfonylmethane, an organic sulfur compound. It is

the third largest nutrient found in the body. It is present in amino acids, the building

blocks of protein. MSM is best known for helping with creaky and aching joints,

especially from sports injuries, osteoarthritis, and tendinitis. As an anti-inflammatory,

MSM has also been helpful with relieving chronic pain and eliminating allergies. MSM

increases your cells’ capability to flush out excess fluids and toxins to help in the

detoxification process. Part of MSM’s job is to help your body make its own

antioxidants.

Mucuna pruriens: An herb that contains L-dopa, a precursor to dopamine, as such,

mucuna is an excellent herb for dopamine-deficient depression as well as lack of

motivation. It has been used effectively for treating Parkinson’s disease. Macuna is

also considered an adaptogen and has been known to help balance blood sugar

levels. It supports adrenal health and detoxification via its ability to maintain high

levels of the antioxidants vitamin C, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione.

Nettle: Very high in minerals, especially calcium and silica, nettle is a good source of

vitamin C and is especially good as a nutritious addition to beverages. It’s also

beneficial for bone repair and rebuilding, immune support, adrenal support, and as an

anti-inflammatory agent. Nettle is also known to aid in the reduction of allergy

symptoms. The leaves are used as a diuretic, for help with prostate ailments, and to

lower high blood pressure.

Oregon grape: The berberine alkaloid, a part of the Oregon grape, improves blood

flow to the liver, stimulating the flow of bile and intestinal secretions. This helps with

general gastrointestinal disorders including constipation, diverticulitis, GERD, and

Irritable Bowel Syndrome. While helping with the gastrointestinal disorders, Oregon

grape has a sedative effect on the smooth muscles lining the digestive tract, which

helps relieve stomach cramps and abdominal pain. Oregon grape is useful to treat

colds, flus, and many other infections because of the berberine. It has been shown to

kill or suppress the growth of candida and other fungi, E. coli, and parasites such as

giardia. As a wash, it can help with the overproduction of skin cells that occurs with the

plaque of psoriasis.

Pau d’Arco: Most well-known for its anti-yeast and anti-fungal properties, this herb is

an excellent choice in cases of candida albicans overgrowth, vaginal yeast infections,

and athlete's foot. It can also be helpful with parasites, viral conditions, and skin

disorders such as eczema. It's also known to strengthen the immune system,

especially when it’s recovering from chronic fatigue, candida, fibromyalgia, and other

exhaustive conditions. Pau d’Arco is also useful in managing diabetes.

Peppermint: Offering a wide variety of uses, peppermint is used for fighting the

common cold, calming inflammations, and soothing digestive problems. The main

active ingredient is menthol, which produces a cooling sensation and acts as a mild

anesthetic. Peppermint contains vitamins A and C as well as a number of minerals.

One study showed that peppermint produced a decrease in Irritable Bowel Syndrome

symptoms. Peppermint acts as a muscle relaxer, so it can help with the pain caused

by menstrual cramps. Studies have shown that a whiff of peppermint can also help

curb cravings.

Pomegranate: The seeds, juice, and extract of pomegranate are rich in vitamin

C. While the juice and fruit might be too sweet for those with blood sugar handling

problems, the powdered extract is low-glycemic and works well in beverages.

Pomegranates contain high levels of flavonoids and polyphenols, which are potent

antioxidants that protect against heart disease and cancer. Antioxidant compounds in

pomegranates called punicalagins are shown to benefit the heart and blood vessels

not only by lowering cholesterol, but also by reducing platelet aggregation and naturally

lowering blood pressure. Pomegranates also inhibit breast cancer, prostate cancer,

colon cancer, and leukemia, as well as preventing vascular changes that promote

tumor growth in lab animals. In addition, pomegranate juice contains phytochemical

compounds that stimulate serotonin and estrogen receptors, reducing the symptoms of

depression and increasing bone mass in lab animals.

Rhodiola: A potent adaptogen, studies show that rhodiola’s adaptogenic properties

work profoundly upon the central nervous system monoamines, making it the herb of

choice for an improvement in those dealing with depression and stress. This activity

also shows it to be valuable in helping with conditions such as fibromyalgia and chronic

fatigue syndrome. Rhodiola increases the bioelectrical activity in the brain, improving

memory and brain energy. Rhodiola has also been found to regulate blood sugar

levels, enhance thyroid function, and improve adrenal gland reserves.

Rose hips: Used as a whole herb, in tea or powder form, or as an extract, rose hips

contain lycopene, which makes it useful as an antioxidant and for cardiovascular

diseases. The extract is very high in vitamin C, making it good for adrenal support as

well as general immune function. The fruit acids and pectins are mildly diuretic, thus

making it good for kidney disorders. Because it is also high in vitamin A, it is good for

the skin and soft tissue repair and inflammation.

Schizandra: Widely used as an adaptogen and male tonic, traditional Chinese

medicine has also used schizandra for coughs, asthma, as well as for painful joints. It

is also helpful as an immune system tonic, along with supporting the liver and helping

with hepatitis C. As an antioxidant and adaptogen, schizandra is often used with, or

instead of, ginseng for increased brain efficiency, improved reflexes, and improved

endurance. Because it boosts the nitric oxide in the body, schizandra increases

energy and fights fatigue, but because it is an adaptogen, it is also a mild sedative and

is helpful in stress-induced insomnia and anxiety.

Siberian ginseng: Also known as eleutherococcus, Siberian ginseng is a well-known

and proven herb for improving stamina, balancing blood sugar, reducing stress,

improving energy, and recovering from fatigue. It is often used as a tonic to invigorate

a person physically and mentally. Siberian ginseng contains eleutherosides, which

balances adrenal function, helps maintain healthy blood circulation, and is a powerful

immune system booster. It's also excellent for athletes and students as it increases

strength, endurance, and concentration. The U.S. banned the use of the name

“Siberian ginseng” with the passage of the Ginseng Labeling Act of 2002.

Tulsi: Often referred to as Holy Basil, Tulsi is a native of India, and, as such, has a

long history as a healing Ayurvedic herb. The active component of Tulsi is eugenol,

which has been found to be the reason for most of its therapeutic effects. Among its

many attributes, Tulsi has been found to have blood sugar lowering properties in many

research studies. The natural compound ursolic acid is found in Tulsi, which enables it

to be an effective anti-inflammatory comparable to aspirin or ibuprofen. As an

adaptogen, Tulsi has also been shown to decrease stress hormone levels, especially

corticosterone.

Resources for Essential Oils

Some of my tea and elixir recipes suggest the optional use of essential oils. All essential

oils should be food grade. Also, since most commercial/grocery store shelf oils, extracts,

and flavors are made with alcohol and other “unknowns,” be sure you are using high quality

products that are healthy.

Essential oils are a great way to make delicious

beverages that are also loaded with nutrition and

have therapeutic value. Use any combination of

these in tiny amounts (one to two drops per 16

ounces of water). They can be mixed and

matched as desired to flavor water, green powder

drinks, protein powder drinks, green smoothies,

blended green soups, and even green juices.

Start with 2 – 3 varieties and add 1 – 2 each month as your budget permits. If you purchase

too many all at once, you run the risk of getting overwhelmed and won’t know where to start.

Mountain Rose Herbs has, by far, the best prices I’ve seen for high quality,

organically grown, edible, essential oils that are distilled without the use of chemical

Not all herbs, spices, and tea blends are created equal. Most of the commercially available

products are not organic and many are genetically modified.

When it comes to herbs and spices, while it’s convenient to purchase small bottles that fit on

spice racks, it’s not at all cost effective. I recommend that for those herbs/spices you use a

lot, it’s best to purchase in bulk and refill your containers. Mountain Rose, listed below, sells

a variety of bulk sizes from 2 ounces up to 2 pounds. It’s not uncommon to be able to

purchase a whole pound of spice for under $10 compared to $4 per bottle of the commercially

Basic Tea Recipe Ingredients:

1 teaspoon herbs to 8 ounces of water, OR

1 teabag per 8 ounces water

Directions:

Place herbs in a Mason jar and pour hot water over herbs. Steep overnight.

Using this method, you can combine roots, flowers, and leaves.

Healing Elixir Base Recipe Ingredients:

Liquid base: 2 cups herbal tea, nut or seed milk, fresh juice or water

Fat source: (Only if not made with nut milk as the liquid base) 2 tablespoons nut

butter, 1/2 - 1 avocado (depending on size), Chia Gel (see recipe), handful of nuts

(preferably soaked), 1/2 cup coconut meat, or 2 tablespoons coconut butter

Herbs: a variety of powdered herbs, mushroom powders, and/or green powders –

quantity varies depending on the herb from several teaspoons to several tablespoons

Flavorings: a few drops of essential oils, a dropper full of flavor extracts, up to 2

teaspoons or more of carob, vanilla, or raw cacao

Sweetener (low-glycemic): green leaf stevia or flavored stevia (chocolate, vanilla,

English toffee, orange, raspberry), xylitol, or erythritol (Zero).

Sweetener (high-glycemic): higher glycemic sweeteners like dates, raisins, coconut

nectar, and raw honey are only recommended if you are not over weight, do not

experience blood sugar imbalances, and are free of candida infections.

Salt: a pinch of sea salt or sea kelp

Directions

If you’re using a tea base, boil water and allow herbs to steep 10 minutes or longer to

get to full flavor and strength.

Put liquid base, fat, herbs, flavorings, sweetener, and salt in blender.

Blend until smooth, then adjust flavorings and sweeteners to taste.

Recipes

Chia Gel

Ingredients:

1/2 cup chia seeds

2-1/2 cups water

Directions:

Put chia and water into a quart-sized Mason jar or a glass bowl that can be covered.

Shake or mix well, then allow to stand at room temperature for 8 hours/overnight or for

12 or more hours in the refrigerator. Store up to a week in the refrigerator.

Personal Note: This recipe is used as a base ingredient in many other recipes.

Adrenal Energizer

Ingredients:

2 cups jiaogulan (gynostemma) tea (hot) (Dragon Herbs Spring Longevity Tea)

1 tablespoon lucuma powder – for creamy texture and sweet flavor (Ultimate

Superfoods)

1 teaspoon chaga extract powder (Mountain Rose Herbs)

1 teaspoon maca powder (Health Force Nutritionals)

1/4 teaspoon astragalus extract powder (Mountain Rose Herbs)

1/4 teaspoon ashwagandha (Mountain Rose Herbs)

1/4 teaspoon vanilla

Ingredients:

2 cups hot water

1 licorice root tea bag

1 teaspoon holy basil/tulsi

1/2 teaspoon astragalus

1 heaping teaspoon cordyceps

1/2 teaspoon reishi extract powder

1 teaspoon broccoli sprout powder

1/4 teaspoon fo-ti (ho shou wu)

Directions:

1. Boil water. Brew licorice tea bag and holy basil (use a tea ball) in separate cups.

2. While the teas are brewing, put the dry ingredients into your blender. Then add

sesame tahini, hemp seeds, arugula, sunflower sprouts, chlorella, and liquid minerals.

3. Add tea water to blender. Blend until smooth and liquid.

4. Add essential oils, stevia powder, Jerusalem artichoke syrup, and chocolate liquid

stevia. Blend again.

Caution: Don’t use licorice root tea if you have high blood pressure. You could also use

water, nut milk, vegetable broth, or juice instead of tea water.

Use coconut cream for a smoother elixir. You can use shredded coconut if you have a high-

speed blender. If you want the elixir thicker, you can add more coconut or add different nuts

like pumpkin seeds.

You can use other spices to create a chai spice flavor. These are ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg,

and cardamom.

longer to get to full flavor and strength. Strain if using loose leaf tea. Allow to cool for

cold beverage or use hot for a warm elixir.
