Belper School and Sixth Form Centre A Brief Overview

The school website provides a lot of information regarding the school. The detail below gives you a brief overview.

Vision, Values and Ethos Belper School is a vibrant and happy place to learn and work. It has people at the core of its vision and values, and places great emphasis on individuals growing, developing and becoming somebody. We believe passionately in developing people through a rich, diverse and stimulating educational experience so that they can become rounded citizens who can make a positive contribution to society. The school prides itself on its distinct and unique ethos of celebrating individuality, responsibility and diversity through respect and strong relationships. This is evident through our non-uniform policy and the use of first name terms with staff. Students are trusted with freedoms and responsibilities over access to space and facilities and show on a daily basis their respect for the school, its values and its environment. The visions and values document outlines the details of what the school is all about.

School History The school opened in 1973 on its current site as a 13-18 school, becoming an 11-18 school in 1986. The school has expanded rapidly since then due to its popularity and a number of housing developments within the town. Consequently, the school has a number of buildings that have been added over the years, which have created a very distinctive look and feel to the site. Originally, the school was a Local Authority school before becoming Grant Maintained in 1993. It is now a Foundation school working within the Local Authority, with whom we have very close links.

School Facilities The school enjoys good quality specialist facilities. We have our own large playing fields and benefit from an arrangement with Belper Leisure Centre for PE facilities and examination rooms. This arrangement provides access to a vast range of sports and physical activities including a sports hall, gymnasium, swimming pool, squash courts and the option to hire a state of the art 3g football pitch. The school is divided into Faculty areas, all of which have dedicated and specialist spaces, with computing rooms located throughout the site. The most recent buildings added were a purpose-built Languages block and a superbly designed Art and Drama block. In addition to this, we benefitted from a grant to develop the hall area into a superb fully functioning theatre space which is regularly hired by community organisations for performances, shows and events. The school is also currently at the planning stage of a Section 106 funding project for an exciting and innovative development of our Sixth Form facilities.

Student Numbers There are currently just over 1200 students on roll, a number that is predicted to remain fairly stable over the next few years. At the height of the housing development, the school grew to 1500 as the burgeoning population fed through the local primary schools. There are currently 622 students in KS3, 428 in KS4 and 153 in KS5. The PAN is 210, with an intake of 210 predicted for the foreseeable future.

Partnerships with Other Schools Belper School is a founding member of the Belper Cluster Collaboration (BCC), which is a group of schools within the town and surrounding villages, who work together to provide the best possible education for the children of the area. The BCC works effectively together to support school improvement in each other’s organisations and to foster best practice across the schools. Belper School is extremely proud of its close relationship with the local Primary schools and the regular joint events and activities that happen throughout the year. In addition, the school is a proud member of the Local Authority and works closely with other schools to support provision at Belper but also to share expertise and best practice. The school promotes collaboration with other organisations and works effectively on school-to-school support. This is complemented by other partnerships where the school looks to benefit from strong relationships to provide the best for its students, for example working with the Northworthy Alliance of Schools.

OFSTED The school received a full Section 5 inspection in September 2014 at which it was graded ‘Good’ across all indicators. In March 2018, it received a Section 8 inspection, at which it retained its ‘Good’ grading. As a school, we are proud of this achievement but strive for more as we continue on our journey towards outstanding. The school has strong self-evaluation processes that continue to lead to effective action-planning, through which the areas for development are targeted.

The Curriculum The curriculum offers students a broad and balanced high quality education which supports learning and teaching. A strong curriculum vision and a commitment to providing appropriate provision enable students to learn the skills and knowledge which will equip them to achieve and navigate life beyond school successfully. The impact of the curriculum is regularly assessed, evaluated and reviewed to ensure that our provision is relevant and appropriate for the many different pathways available to our students. SMSC, including British Values, underpin and enrich the curriculum, enabling students to make academic progress whilst developing into well-rounded citizens.

Extra-Curricular and Enrichment Programmes There is a wide variety of additional activities and programmes for students to participate in. Over the years we have been involved in exchanges and cultural experiences with other countries, including France, Germany, Spain and Japan, and we have run a number of residentials within and beyond this country (including trips to Iceland, Barcelona and Amsterdam this year). These have included World Challenge expeditions to India, Namibia, Botswana, Peru and Malawi, combining travel with work in local communities. A further expedition to India is planned for the summer of 2020. We run a weekly calendar of clubs covering interests ranging from cooking to archery, coding club to live action role play, dance and drama to the Bless Project, amongst many others. We also have a termly PE enrichment programme and a well established Duke of Edinburgh Award programme. The students of the school also participate in annual school events and performances, such as the X Factor and the school production. Recent school productions have included Lord of the Flies and Hetty Feather. In addition, we have rock nights and music events, and recently ran a very successful Christmas Cracker – an evening of festive music, fun, stalls and activities for the community.

Competitions Across a number of disciplines, the school thrives on the buzz of putting our students up against the best of the rest to test our skills, talents and abilities. Over recent years, we have achieved success in a number of fields. This has included District and County competitions in sport, local catering events, Computer animations, Maths challenges, Technology challenges and national Languages competitions. Our latest adventure is to get together an equestrian team and compete in our first ever event as a school.

Belper School and Sixth Form Centre People are at the heart of Belper School. The relationships, respect and daily atmosphere are what make the place tick and have been fundamental in leading to the successes of recent years. The rise in results, improvements across different areas and the ‘Good’ judgements have come from the effectiveness of these people working together to make a difference and create the best possible environment to learn and work in. We strongly recommend a visit to the school to be able to appreciate the unique culture that creates such positive emotions.
