Experience, depth and a solid recruiting class are all strengths for this year’s volleyball squad

It wasn’t supposed to end that way. The College of Southern Idaho volleyball team entered the 2008 Region 18 Tourna-ment ranked 8th in the nation. By the end of the tournament, CSI left without even a Region 18 Championship. No sopho-more returning or head coach Heidi Cartisser wants that feeling again. The fourth-year head coach went out and recruited several players to fill the holes that led to the upset. The top priority was finding an experienced setter that could run the offense, block and read the opponents defense.

Cartisser found just the player in 5-10 Brazilian Barbara Alcantara.“She is amazing,” Cartisser said. “She sees the court so well and just has the feel for the game you can’t teach.”The other area that needed improvement was the outside hitter position. Last season, Cartisser had to move Jessica Pea-

cock away from her natural position on the right side to the left side to give the Golden Eagles an easy option on broken plays. This year, sophomore Sam Misa and freshman Elisa Brochada will likely move into the outside hitter positions. Misa, who was recovering from ACL surgery last season, was not able to jump so played back row most of the season. Brochada, a 6-1 OH from Brazil, gives the Eagles two solid go-to players. Also in the mix on the outside is freshman Dani

Dean. Dean transferred to CSI from BYU-Ida-ho, where she praticed her volleyball skills in the school’s intramu-ral program.

“All three are solid and give us options if someone is having an off night,” Cartisser said.

The Golden Eagles lost All American middle blocker Alyssa Wistrick to graduation but sophomore re-turner Torrey Hulsey and newcomers Alyssa Everett (6-2, Utah), Jesse Dill (6-0, Dietrich) and Charelle Minor (6-2 Pocatello) have given Cartisser a solid core. Add to that sophomore surprise Amanda Filiaga (5-11 Pocatello) and CSI should be dominant at the net. Filiaga played a little right side last season for the Golden Eagles.

ing,” Cartisser said. “Even though she isn’t our tallest player, she is quick getting out on the block. It’s been so much fun to see her improve and gain confidence.”

Returning at the libero position is Britani Hathorn (5-4 Oregon).“Britani is arguably the best libero in the country,” Cartisser said. “She is the type of player that fans love to watch. She

will be key to our offensive attack. When she gets the ball to our setters, we can run a lot of different things on offense.”Probably one of the fiercest battles will

be on the right side. While returning Region 18 first team selection Jessica Peacock (6-2 Australia) will be the Eagles go-to player early, Cartisser can go to sophomore Alex VanDyke (5-10 Oregon) or freshman Dama Cox (6-0 Nevada) as well. When CSI runs a 6-2, VanDyke or Cox will fit into the other right-side hitter spot. Both are athletic and VanDyke gives defense fits because she is left-handed.

“With Jessica in her true position, we will be hard to stop on the right side,” Cartisser said. “She also gives us another option as a back-row hitter. We expect to get points off her jump serve as well.”

Freshman Ashleigh Pollard (5-11 Wash-ington) and sophomore Laticia Lehman (5-6 Caldwell) also have separated themselves as solid passers. Lehman, who shared setting duties last season, gives Cartisser the option of running a 6-2 with Alcantara and Lehman setting or a 5-1 with just Alcantara and using Lehman in the backrow for her serving and passing skills. Freshman Chauncee Alexeson (5-8 Hagerman) gives the Golden Eagles depth at the setter position.

“We are so excited with this year’s team,” Cartisser said. “We have more depth, which should push everyone, every day.”

As always, Region 18 will be incredibly tough. The pre-season poll puts three confer-ence teams in the top 20.

“It will be a fight to host and a fight to win it,” Cartisser said. “North Idaho returns the Scenic West Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Salt Lake is always tough.”

Snow will be an unknown because the Badgers have a new coach. Still, they are always a scrappy team that battles. CEU and CNCC are much improved.

“We will have to be ready to play every match,” Cartisser said.The Golden Eagles open play at their annual Outback Invitational before traveling to Arizona and Texas for tourna-

ments. CSI will host the Starr Corporation Invitational the weekend before opening up SWAC action. In the four tourna-ments, the Golden Eagles will face six teams voted in the top 10 of the NJCAA pre-season poll.

“We’ll know a lot about our team early,” Cartisser said. “It will be fun to play so many solid teams and see how we match up.”

Heidi Cartisser joined the College of Southern Idaho as the head coach in fall of 2006.

In 2007, Cartisser led CSI to a Region 18A championship and a 10th-place finish at the NJCAA National Championships. In her three years at CSI, Cartisser has compiled a 98-33 record.

The former Golden Eagle, who played at CSI from 1991-1993, graduated from Albertson College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1995.

Her coaching career began at Treasure Valley CC in Ontario, Ore. Cartisser coached the Chukars from 1995-2000. At that time, TVCC was a member of the Scenic West Athletic Conference. In 1997, Car-tisser led TVCC to the regional playoffs for the first time in 19 years.

After coaching at Treasure Valley, Cartisser took the head coaching job at Chicago State University. CSU competes in the Mid-Continent Conference. In her first year at Chicago State, the team won more matches than the previous seven years combined and won its first conference match in school history. In her second season, the team improved statistically in almost every category and won more

conference matches than the previous year.In 2003, Chicago State finished fourth in the con-

ference, posting the highest conference finish ever in school history. In her last season there, CSU finished with the most wins ever by the Division I school.

Cartisser moved back to the Magic Valley area in the spring of 2005 with her family. Her husband Jim assisted at the College of Southern Idaho in the fall of 2005, helping the Golden Eagles to their eighth national championship.

Cartisser and her husband Jim have five children - Cody, Canyon, Cason, Cailey and Carli.

Erin MellingerAssistant Coach

3rd Season

Erin brings the experience of a coach and player to the Golden Eagle volleyball program. She grew up in New Plymouth, Idaho before com-peting at Treasure Valley for two years under Coach Cartisser. Erin then played one season at Lewis Clark State College in 1999 as a defensive specialist, where she helped her team advance to the NAIA national tour-nament.

In her final year of eligibility, Erin transferred to Chicago State Uni-versity, where she reunited with Coach Cartisser. In 2002, Erin was an assistant coach at the University of Great Falls. In May 2003, she was named the head coach at Independence CC in Kansas, where she com-piled a 22-12 record her first year and a second-place finish in the Kansas Jayhawk Conference. In 2004, the team finished the season 40-9 and won the conference, region and district titles, qualifying for the NJCAA Na-tional Tournament. She coached two All-Americans.

From there, Erin took over duties at Lewis Clark State College as the head coach. In 2007, Erin joined Heidi for the third time, this time as an assistant coach for CSI.

Erin and her husband Gary have one daughter - Piper.

titude to practice every day. She has played for me and coached with me so

she understands what I want and how I like to coach. CSI and I are lucky to have her as part of the Golden Eagle family.”

In her fourth season at CSI, Babes brings playing experience and an enthusiasm for the game of volleyball to the court. A family affair, Babes follows in the footsteps of her sister All-American Aneli Cubi-Otineru who played for CSI in 2005 and helped lead the Golden Eagles to a national championship. Another sister, Kawena Cubi-Otineru played for CSI in 2006.

Babes began her volleyball career, playing club ball for the Kame-hameha club team in Hawaii in seventh grade. She continued to compete for that team for five years. A standout at University of Hawaii Lab High School, Babes led them to four state championships. In 1986, Babes competed on the 16U Junior National team, earning all-tournament honors.

Babes played one year at the University of Hawaii, ranking sixth all time since 1985 in service aces per game. In 65 games, she recorded 26 aces. The 35-year-old has four children - Darren, Daylen, Darian and Del.

At CSI: As a freshman, Sam played back row for the Golden Eagles. Returning from ACL surgery, she was not cleared to jump until late in the season. She finished the season ranked third on the team in digs per game.

Before CSI: A 4-year letterman at Dixie High School, Sam earned all region honors every year.

As a junior and senior, Sam helped Dixie to a second-place finish at the state tournament and earned first team all-state honors.

Outside of high school volleyball, Sam played on the Jammers Club team in 2002 and 2003 and the Asics Club team from 2004 to 2006.

At CSI: An honorable mention Region 18 selection as a fresh-man, Britani ranked third in the league in digs per game and led the Golden Eagles.

Before CSI: A libero that started three years for Gresham High School, Britani led her team to the state tournament every year. GHS placed third at state Britani’s sophomore year, first her junior season and fifth when she was a senior.

In 2008, Britani received the Candis Carter award for the most inspirational player at the Emerald City Classic Tournament. She played club ball for the Nike Northwest Juniors.

At CSI: Laticia played in 26 of the Golden Eagles 36 matches, giving CSI options. She came off the bench as a setter and back row passer.

Before CSI: Laticia played golf and tennis at Vallivue High School her freshmen year before just focusing on volleyball as a sophomore, junior and senior.

Although her team never qualified for state, Laticia earned first team all-conference honors.

Off the court, Laticia excelled in the classroom graduating second in a class of 300.

Outside of high school volleyball, Laticia played club volleyball for Club Idaho Gold as a junior and senior.

At CSI: A freshman starter at middle blocker, Torrey led Region 18 and CSI in blocking. She earned Region 18 honorable mention honors.

Before CSI: A volleyball standout at Sutter Union High School, Torrey led her team to league and Northern Section championships as a sophomore, junior and senior.

All three years of high school play, Torrey earned all-league hon-ors.

Her senior season, she averaged 3.6 kills and 1.3 blocks per game. She was selected to play in the North vs. South Section All-Star Game.

Torrey also played basketball for three years at Sutter.

At CSI: Jessica was key in the Golden Eagles attack last season, averaging 3.73 kills per game to lead the region. She earned first team Region 18 honors for her play on the left side.

Before CSI: Hailing from Summertown, Australia, Jessica played volleyball on the Australian women’s national team. She also re-ceived all-star awards for junior national 21-under, 19-under, 17-un-der and 16-under teams. Jessica said she came to CSI to play to try something new.

At CSI: A right-side hitter, Alex played in 15 of the Golden Eagles 36 matches. She ranked second on the team in attack percent-age, hitting .390.

Before CSI: Alex lettered four years and started three at Glencoe High School. As a junior, she helped her team to a third-place finish in league and 9th in the state. That year she earned first team all-league honors and all-state honorable mention.

Her senior season, she led Glencoe to second in the league and 7th in the state. She also earned all league first-team honors that year.Outside of high school, Alex played club ball for Pacific, Multnomah Athletic Club and Portland.

Before CSI: A two-sport athlete at Highland High School, Aman-da played volleyball and basketball. As a senior, she led the Rams to a second place finish in the region and third in the state in volleyball and second in the region and sixth in the state in basketball.

A two-year letterman in both, Amanda earned second team all-state honors in volleyball her senior year.

Before CSI: Chauncee came to CSI from Hagerman via Blue Mountain CC. The 5-8 setter played basketball last season at BMCC before transferring to CSI to play volleyball.

At Hagerman High School, Chauncee was key to the Pirates winning a state championship in volleyball her senior year as well as third as a junior and fourth as a sophomore.

Chauncee also played basketball, qualifying for state three years. Outside of school, she competed in rodeo.

Gerald L. Beck began his career at the College of Southern Idaho in 1975 and became president of the college in 2005. His many titles at the college include Instructor, Coordinator of Trade and Industry Programs, Dean of Continuing Education/Summer School, Vice President of Instruction, and Executive Vice President/Chief Academic Officer.

Dr. Beck is an Idaho native. He received his bachelor’s degree in Technical Education, his master’s degree in Teacher Education, and his Ed. D. in Adult Education from the University of Idaho. He completed his post doctoral at Harvard University Institute for Educational Management.

In addition to his duties at the college, Dr. Beck is a member of the Twin Falls Rotary Club, and is a board member of the State Workforce Development Council appointed by the Governor. He serves as a board member on many local organizations including Southern Idaho Economic Development Organization, Region IV Development Association and Magic Valley Regional Medical Center. He is past president of the Idaho Association of Private Industry Councils.

Dr. Beck and his wife, Barbara, have three adult children and three grandchildren. He attributes much of his success to the opportunities provided by the college and the support from his family and co-workers.

Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate took over Golden Eagle Athletic Director responsibilities in January 2007.

Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on the CSI campus in 1993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with student-athletes and coaches on a daily basis.

Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors.

Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he

compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place state finishes.Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the
