A simple truth known to our clients is this: weekenders don’t have to bebeside the seaside to be restful. In fact, weekend retreats in rural placeslike the Yarra Ranges‘ home illustrated here, can provide a year-roundtranquillity unattainable to those in popular beach locations.

We have designed and built ‘second homes’ for clients in locations allaround Melbourne, from the coastal extremities of the Mornington andBellarine Peninsulas to the ‘tree-change’ areas around Woodend,Kyneton and the Yarra Ranges. In all locations our designs are individual, contemporary and bright.

These days too, in a development we welcome, we are frequently beingbriefed to design city houses with the simplicity, informality and ease ofmaintenance of a coastal or country property. Typically such briefs arefor empty nesters and retirees who have neither the need nor the desirefor large, high maintenance properties and yearn for the relaxation andsimplicity of an endless weekend.

T he shoes were perfect. Beautifully made, great style and just look at that US-dollar price – brilliant. But wait: what was that little disclaimer

in red right underneath the “Add to Basket” icon I was just about to click? “Cannot be shipped to Australia”. Foiled again by an Australian retail system that so often fails to meet my needs here and yet does everything it can to prevent them being fulfilled anywhere else.

Last week it was revealed that more and more Australian retailers are reaching agreements with overseas websites to prevent Australian online shoppers from purchasing items that the retailers believe they should be able to provide exclusively in this country. Not that they actually do provide them all: they might be the wholesaler for, say, one particular brand, but won’t necessarily have the entire line. Try to get that coat in red, rather than the locally stocked black, and you’ll be blocked.

The competition watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, has conceded that this practice “could raise concerns under competition provisions” but has not yet declared whether it will look into the matter.

In the meantime, wily Australian shoppers are getting around the block by using US-based forwarding

companies – but at a price, of course. If the Australian dollar continues its slide against the US, this will become a less-attractive option, even for the most sneaky of us.

It’s infuriating. The great international mantras of contemporary economics have been “mobility” and

“globalisation”. Capital must be allowed to be mobile, so that any multinational anywhere can invest

wherever it sees potential for gain. Labour must be mobile, so that Bangladeshis can be shipped into Dubai to work as nannies, and Pakistanis can build the towers of the Middle East at cut rates.

(Of course, the poor and dispossessed are not allowed to be quite as mobile: pay a people

smuggler your meagre life fortune to get you and your children the hell out of the nightmare you live in and to a better land, and you’ll wind up in detention for a year or so. That kind of mobility is anarchy, apparently.)

Yet some local retailers and wholesalers believe they have the right to restrict locals from overseas online purchases, even when customer feedback repeatedly shows that so many of them are failing to meet the needs of their Australian customers.

I have written here before that the problem is not just price – although if a miner or a farmer can benefit from

international currency shifts when they fall their way, why can’t a consumer? The main problems that chase us from local shops are customer service and lack of choice.

The market here is small compared with, say, the US and Europe, and the choices offered reflect that. But as brands and their marketing campaigns go global and the internet connects us all in real time, the online block is a ridiculous and unreasonable restriction. And it won’t work, as consumers find more and more ways to get around it.

Australians have long wondered why we pay so much more for software and music downloads, and a parliamentary inquiry has now been announced into that question. Retailers wont be happy with some of the answers being made public.

In the meantime, the realities of international e-commerce will clearly continue to blindside some local retailers. The nasty reality they face is one confronted even by international delegations as they negotiate free-trade agreements, dollar by dollar, industry by industry across the world: the globalisation genie is out of the bottle, and she wants a new pair of shoes. \

After quitting school at 15 against the advice of his teachers, Neil Robertson proved that he had what it takes in his chosen field, writes GeoRGe IeRodIAcoNou.

right on cue

cover story

the phrase “you’re snookered” means you’re stuffed – and that’s exactly what Neil Robertson’s teachers thought when, at the age of 15, he dropped out of school to pursue a career as a

professional snooker player.Back then Robertson was just another sneaky kid

hustling the customers at his dad’s Ringwood pool hall, fleecing them of $20 a pop, listening to Guns N’ Roses and Metallica. For fun he’d cheer the Magpies and admired the magic of Peter Daicos, the Macedonian Marvel.

But the metal fan was far from being snookered; in fact, he was on cue to become Australia’s most successful snooker player, a world champion and a millionaire. Robertson has gone on to eclipse homegrown snooker legend Eddie Charlton; he is now regarded as Australia’s best-ever player.

In the same year that Robertson dropped out of school, he became the youngest Australian to put together a century break in an Australian ranking event. To put this into perspective, if you sink one red ball then the black ball, then repeat this with all 15 reds, and after that the coloured balls in order, you end up with 147 points. Try that next time you’re in a snooker hall or the local RSL and if you can do that, you too might become a snooker star. I tried it and failed miserably, reaching a score of just 15.

Robertson’s talent, however, impressed his peers, who then convinced his parents to send him to England to compete in the World Snooker Championship. The hat was passed around and his parents scraped together enough money for the airfare. There was not enough left to buy a vest or shoes in which to compete, so he borrowed a vest from a fellow competitor and found a referee with the same shoe size. In the borrowed attire, he made the semi-finals.

That was the most positive result of what was a disastrous start to his professional career, for a string of heavy and humiliating losses to his mostly English competitors followed. Robertson returned home for another two years to practise on the Australian circuit.

“That’s when my game improved, but those early years were hard on mum and dad,” he says.

“They did everything they could; they were stretched financially and it was tough to get money together for all of my expenses. Mum was building websites and dad had sold the pool hall and was working for one of the charities.

“For years I had ‘You’re not going to make any money playing snooker’ etched into my brain as a motivator. I wanted to drive back to the school in a sports car and say ‘Ha ha, I told you so’ but luckily I’ve matured and realised that the teachers had my best interests at heart.”

Film+ ST KILDA FILM FESTIVAL

Paul Harris doesn’t say it, but he’s probably a little tired of being asked

what themes have emerged from the St Kilda Film Festival. The stock answers are that short films are very personal, and there are often stories about families or adolescence – but, judging from the previews at least, there might be something new this year. By Hari Raj

+ TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL This year three Australian directors saw their films unveiled in Tribeca. Not bad, considering 5950 films were submitted and only 149 made the program. Snooker facts

l John Parris is regarded as the best cue maker in the world and his cues sell for more than $1000.

l Snooker championships date to 1916l In 1927, the first professional world

championship had a prize pool equivalent of $500. Today it is more than $400,000.

Robertson acknowledges that it is hard to make it in any sport, let alone snooker; he points out that for every good story, there are 50 hard-luck stories that go unheard.

“For an Australian it is tough because it is a sport that means you need to move away from Australia to reach a high level, because the majority of tournaments are in the UK and Europe … (and) you need to be practising with them (the best players),” he says.

So, at the age of 21, Robertson returned to Britain, set up home in Cambridge and steadily improved his game each year. His wins on the highly lucrative European circuit made him a millionaire

by his mid-20s. But it wasn’t until Robertson turned 28 that his career

peaked and he realised his lifelong dream. He won the world championship and the 2010 World Open; his son, Alexander, was also born just a few days after the championship.

“That was a massive thing and then I played in too many tournaments, I should have had a rest. That season I faded out and got burnt out,” he says.

“In the season just gone, I accumulated more ranking points than anyone else and will officially be ranked No.7 in the season coming up. Winning the Masters in January was a massive confidence booster. It is the most prestigious event after the world championships and only the top 16 players in the world are invited to it.

“I’m pretty laid-back, which helps in snooker. Some players handle pressure better than others and fortunately handling pressure is a strength of mine. No two frames are the same, so I’m always thinking quite a few shots ahead and that sequence is always changing. That side of my game has developed well.”

But there’s no yearning to return home just yet. In Cambridge, he’s known as the “Thunder from Down Under”, and plays to sold-out venues. World championship snooker is rating better than world championship tennis on Eurosport.

The game is rising rapidly in China and at the moment snooker is king, with five major tournaments based there over the next 12 months. And world championship prize money is expected to reach £1 million within the next three years. Robertson plans to be there to collect.

“I miss family and friends and the footy,” he says. “I used to make Melbourne home for three months of the year but these days I barely get a month back here in Australia.”

Robertson will be back in town in July to compete in the Australian Goldfields Open, which attracts the top 16 players in the world, including defending champion Stuart Bingham and two Australian wildcard entrants.

“The atmosphere for last year’s Australian Goldfields Open final was one of the best I have ever witnessed and I am really looking forward to the 2012 event,’’ he says. \

The fit-out is uncompromised Melbourne urban-industrial design. The sharing concept is

Melbourne-style tapas (with the due credit to Spain). Cuisine acclaim belongs mostly to South Korea. And the crowd is Melbourne-does-it-best multicultural. But the final clincher is that this compact new budget-priced diner has Melburnians queuing for tables. Out on the street. Where everyone can see them.

Seoul Soul is a five-month-old Korean diner, owned by a team of three interior designers, and right now it’s the place to be on Victoria Street. Age seems no barrier, ethnicity no prerequisite and income irrelevant.

The narrow interior shop space – the owners took over a third of the café next door – seats about 16 on bar stools at high shared timber tables with a charcoal grill at the centre of each setting. Intimate and adjacent conversations are hard to ignore, but that’s part of the charm. Stools around the open kitchen in the foyer area hold another half-a-dozen patrons given an excellent view of kitchen machinations.

Insu Kim, the designer with the largest share of this restaurant, describes the food as “modern Korean”, admitting that while it borrows names and flavours from his homeland, it’s not really authentic Korean food. “It’s a bit sweeter and less spicy, more Westernised,” he says, as is the borrowed concept of tapas-style sharing dishes.

In the short time it’s been open, Seoul Soul has altered course too. The central grills at each place setting were too messy and too smoky and are no longer used. And the hoped-for liquor licence, which will see the tapas section of the menu extended, is still pending.

Staff are efficient, but offer little assistance and are reluctant to make suggestions on menu combinations or serving sizes.

The current selection of a dozen or so Korean tapas dishes include fried rice cakes, dumplings, char-grilled scallop, prawn or shiitake mushroom skewers and seaweed rolls and seafood patties – all with ingredients borrowed from neighbouring cuisines.

A foursome of uninspiring pork dumplings – chewy casings, nondescript fillings – that I’m really not sure were made in-house, arrived on a long, dark pottery dish, with a scattering of kimchi-style pickled and shredded vegetables and a small dish of sesame-sprinkled soy.

More interesting was a soy dduk bok ki, which Kim describes as classic Korean

street food. Served in a rustic white bowl, it’s a generous offering of soy-flavoured broth studded with a fascinating collection of noodle-like rice cakes, flat pieces of fish cake, shredded vegetables, a fried seaweed roll and a couple of fried spring rolls (that again seemed pre-purchased). It was intriguing, but in the end a little bland and I’m not sure I’d order it again.

The menu is divided into sections that I wanted to have a slightly more Westernised order – soup and tapas followed the “mains” and preceded the soft drinks; salads and share dishes came first. The salads include char-grilled beef rib, tofu and calamari, and then there’s bibimbap, a traditional dish of white rice topped with sautéed seasoned chilli paste to which ingredients such as stir-fried mixed vegetables, pork or beef are added and mixed together.

From the char-grill barbecue section, dishes intended for sharing arrive on a metal hotplate. Stir-fried spicy prawns are a generous offering of a dozen or so plump, good-quality prawns tossed with onion, beanshoots, cabbage and shredded carrot, sprinkled with black sesame seeds. A side order of rice easily helps this cover two appetites as a shared main.

The Dosirak (or meal bucket, a Korean version of the Bento box)

is a house specialty and in both appearance and compilation is quite a hit. Timber bowls that look like tiny barrels each arrive with rice, salad and “finger food”.

The beef bulgogi (marinated meat) has been thinly sliced and marinated

in a thick, slightly sweet soy sauce. The meat is delicate and incredibly tender. The finger food component includes another of those questionable spring rolls and a kind of crumbed samosa. A few bits of greenery and some sweet, pickled vegetables add colour and texture.

I liked Seoul Soul for its gutsy, modern Melbourne fit-out, its dead-cheap prices and its attempt to bring Korean flavours to Vietnamese-dominated Victoria Street. It will be even more of a hit with a liquor licence.

I can’t personally vouch for its similarity to modern Korean dining venues or the authenticity of its food, but to diners with $50 to spend on a cheap and cheerful meal for two, I guess it doesn’t matter. \

The narrow entry is crowded with diners huddled around the boxed open kitchen as they queue for tables or takeaway. Wire mesh panels, ply and polished metal surfaces provide industrial chic, lit by caged bulbs and softened by lush outdoor plants. a narrow, hinged window reveals the action at the stoves, while behind the green-framed glass door diners huddle at high timber benches. Shared grills at each setting explain the boxed metal exhaust system overhead. Factory-look shelving, white tiles and dark timber wainscoting complete the pared-back theme. \

s o you love a bargain?“What’s a good quaffing wine, what should I buy?” It’s the question I get asked more than any

other. It’s also the hardest to answer. In order to narrow the range of options, I tend to

answer with a question: I reply, “What sort of wine do you like?” and go from there.

There’s no point suggesting a cracking $10 cabernet to someone who only drinks white, especially given there’s so many good-value red and white wines around at the moment.

The high value of the Australian dollar has had a fair bit to do with the current oversupply of wine. The

strong currency means that the American, and to a lesser extent the UK and Europe,

export market has waned, leading to an excess of good-quality wine in Australia that needs to find a home.

To deal with this excess, some wineries have been introducing whole new ranges or tiers of wines that sit at price points below their better-known sisters and brothers. In other cases, the quality of lower-end,

mass-produced wines has increased with the availability of better-quality juice. Some

also finds its way into cleanskins, which don’t dominate the way they did even five years ago.Conversely, the strong dollar has driven down the

price of imports, so that there’s plenty of affordable wines from foreign shores that offer a

good experience. The response I get from some people

when I suggest a few cheap wines to try is “really?”. This is common when I mention a

wine that is as well known as Vegemite. It’s not a snobby reaction, but often just surprise that a

wine that has been around for donkey’s years can still be good. The Hardy’s Nottage Hill 2010 shiraz I reviewed here late last year (check it out at www.theweeklyreview.com.au/wine) still draws disbelief when I suggest friends snap it up. I’m supposed to have more-refined tastes, but a good wine is exactly that.

At times I’ve had to resort to offering money-back guarantees on the wines I recommend (single-bottle only, it doesn’t apply on case buys) to convince a suspicious friend of a wine’s merits. No one has ever redeemed the offer.

Many of the local wines priced in quaffing territory – $15 and under – are generally made

by the bigger producers. Their economies of scale allows them to keep prices down and produce wines of amazing consistency year in, year out.

I recently noticed that several of the wines I had been recommending to mates haven’t

appeared in these pages, or that new vintages had been released but not reviewed.

So this week I’m righting a couple of wrongs and reviewing a few new vintages of favourite quaffers. You’re likely to find them a dollar or two cheaper at the chains, too.

It would potentially bankrupt me to offer a money-back guarantee to half-a-million people, so that offer isn’t on the table here, but please email any feedback – good and bad – to the address below. \

Deakin Estate Shiraz 2010(Murray Darling) $10; 13.5%★★★ ½

The Deakin Estate range has had a makeover recently. The bottles are lightweight and eco-friendly and there’s pretty new packaging. Inside, it’s still the same wine that year in, year out, provides good value. This is a soft, gentle wine that has nice intensity to the tasty flavours of cherry, blueberry, blackberry, menthol, pepper and spice. Nicely structured, it has bright acidity, a soft grip of tannins and a good hit of cherry, cured meat and spiced plums on exit.

Food match \ Bangers and mash

Gran Sasso Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2010 (d’Abruzzo, Italy) $10.99; 12.5%★★★★

This is a hot-selling wine around some of Melbourne’s better independent wine shops, and for good reason – you get a lot of wine for your money. There’s some complexity to the flavours of plum, blackberry, liquorice, spice, dried herbs and nuts, but it’s the fine, drying tannins and structure that make it stand out from the crowd. Acidity is fresh and food-friendly, it has a good mouthfeel and the rich finish has good length and some nice savoury notes.

Food match \ Osso bucco

Elefante Tempranillo Shiraz 2010(La Mancha, Spain $13; 14%★★★★

From vineyards in La Mancha, where 50 per cent of Spain’s grapevines grow, comes this blend of tempranillo and shiraz. Savoury to the core, there’s an earthiness to the aromas of cherry, blackberry, spice and leather. It’s a similar story on the palate, with ripe cherry, liquorice and dried-herb flavours. Chunky tannins and vibrant acidity just add to the drinkability of this. It benefited from a splash in the decanter, too.

Food match \ Braised oxtail

De Bortoli Windy Peak Pinot Noir 2010(Yarra Valley) $14; 13%★★★★ ½

De Bortoli’s bargain Windy Peak range has taken on a regional focus recently, and this is sourced from vineyards around the Yarra Valley. It’s perfumed and bright, with aromas and flavours of raspberry, strawberry, cherry, spiced plum and a beetroot-like earthiness that’s a real delight. It’s silky smooth and seamless in the mouth, with good balance between the sweet flavour and sour acidity and a fine grip. It’s a serious wine for the price.

McWilliams Hanwood Estate Chardonnay 2009(Australia) $11.99; 13.5%★★★ ½

The bulk of the wine comes from the Riverina, but 12 regions from all around the country contributed to this. It’s 97.82 per cent chardonnay (when you make so much of a wine I guess it’s easy to be so specific), with small amounts of pinot noir, semillon, riesling and verdelho. There’s a hint of elegance to the stonefruit, cantaloupe, nuts and tropical fruit aromas. Medium-bodied, it’s smooth and tasty, bright and balanced with clean flavours of melon, peach, citrus and nougat on exit.

Award-winning Hobart-based journalist and author Debi Marshall examines Gina Rinehart, Australia’s wealthiest woman. Rinehart’s life story is well known. As the only child of mining magnate Lang Hancock and his wife Hope, her future as her father’s business heir was mapped out while still a teenager. Since Hancock’s death in 1992, Rinehart has become one of the commercial world’s most powerful identities. But her personal life, as Marshall reveals, is a mess. This fascinating story will remind you that money can’t buy happiness; it can, however, force you into a court battle with three of your children. \

This week’s Jewish cookbook tribute is not complete without mention of Melbourne food lover and ABC Radio regular Rilka Warbanoff’s story of her culinary influences. Warbanoff’s parents were Bulgarian migrants who first settled in Adelaide and established a grocery business. Food has always played a key role in her life, even when she was running a company and managing a family. This gentle memoir, with 180 diverse recipes themed under chapters such as “Comfort Food”, “Why Something Sweet is Always Sweet” and “How to Feed a Crowd”, will give nourishment to keen cooks. \

Although not the cheapest on the market, this new knitting book is by far the best we’ve seen in recent times. Its arrival coincides with a mini knitting boom that’s occurring in the ’burbs as more people discover the satisfaction that comes with creating their own items. Melody Lord explains more than 120 stitch styles (handy how-to photographs included) as well as advice on how to assemble your knitting kit, choose yarn, and care for woollen garments. Now all we need are some decent, affordable wools in beautiful shades to re-enter the retail world and the knitters of Australia can rejoice! \

If you are looking for a book for eight to 12-year-olds but you’re worried about attention spans drifting, this is the perfect gift. Author and former science teacher Jack Challoner has “always prided myself in explaining scientific ideas clearly in an appropriate way to whoever is listening or reading”. And he nails it. Challoner explores a vast range of topics, including gases, rock age identification, germs, relativity and the discovery of chromosomes with wit and snappy prose. The book’s subheading, “Attention! This book skips the boring bits” will win over even the most reluctant reader. \

“We

wanted to find the food for our soul.”

helen Schon’s memories of growing up in pre-war Czechoslovakia are peppered with recollections of family meals, beautiful food

and weekly Sabbath dinners during which traditional Jewish dishes such as chicken soup and gefilte fish were devoured.

But in 1944 their happy life came to an abrupt end when the German army arrived in the village and forced Schon and her family to relocate to a ghetto.

A few weeks later, they were marched with other Jews to the train station. On the night the family arrived at Auschwitz, Schon’s parents were sent to the gas chambers. Their daughter was spared and worked in a factory until liberation in April 1945.

In 1949, Schon migrated to Melbourne and, with her husband David, built a business and raised a family. She still prepares the Sabbath meal and especially enjoys baking cakes. For Schon, food is a conduit from the past

– her village, her parents, her homeland – to her own children and grandchildren.

Schon is one of 26 Jewish migrants interviewed for Cooking From The Heart: A Journey Through Jewish Food.

The participants, who come from a range of regions including Eastern Europe, Canada and

the US, Indonesia, France and Israel, all agree that old family recipes infused with memories are

the backbone of their cooking.Melbourne writers Hayley Smorgon and Gaye

COOKING FROM THE HEART: A JOURNEY THROUGH JEWISH FOODby Hayley Smorgon and Gaye Weeden» $49.95 (Hardie Grant)

Weeden have produced one of the most enchanting cookbooks of the past 12 months.

The interview-then-recipes format honours each of the cooks, their heritage and their own inventiveness.

The currently popular cookbook-as-memoir genre works well with Jewish cooking; so much rich culinary heritage was lost during the Holocaust and it is vital that current and future generations have a recipe keepsake.

This is why, in 2006, a group of Sydney Jewish women decided to get together every Monday and share recipes.

“We wanted to find the food for our soul – those hidden treasures, those recipes not to be lost, those recipes that tell the tale of a community,” they write in their The Monday Morning Cooking Club book.

Like Cooking From the Heart, these recipes reflect treasured memories and happy times in the kitchen.

“Why do I love food so much?” asks Sharon Hendler. “It may have something to do with growing up in a house with an Israeli mother, a Russian father and a Spanish housekeeper.’’ Natanya Eskin writes: “Growing up in a traditional Jewish home meant being constantly surrounded by food.” Lisa Goldberg, recalling her late Polish grandmother Bubba Sheindel and her famous strudel, writes that although the recipe is long gone, she wanted “to record our family’s recipes, to ensure that at least some of them are passed on to the next generation”.

Goldberg and her fellow Monday morning clubbers, along with Weeden and Smorgon in Melbourne, have created wonderful legacies through their books.

We applaud their commitment, and honour all the cooks who came before them. \

There’s also a choice array of international titles, including a special selection from Ireland’s Focus On Cork Festival. We’re looking forward to SoundKilda (May 24 at the Astor), the festival’s music video competition. Brian Nankervis will host 16 of the best Australian music vids from the last year, giving the audience a chance to vote for their favourite. tvThis new HBO comedy series has arrived with such a loud buzz of hype and backlash that it’s easy to miss the most important thing about it. It’s very, very funny. Writer, director and star Lena Dunham has made an indie comedy that avoids the usual twee trappings of contemporaries such as Miranda July. Instead, Girls is blunt, uncomfortable and all-too-real.

Hannah (Dunham) is a 20-something permachild, living off her parents and dreaming of a job in publishing. She’s trapped in that familiar limbo between life-as-fantasised and life-as-lived, too busy analysing every moment of her existence to actually get anything done.

Critics have complained that the series offers a pretty limited take on life in the Big Apple. Admittedly, the characters are uniformly white, privileged and educated. But then, this is a show about being white, privileged and educated. It doesn’t aspire to the universality some see implied by its title.

These girls, however, aren’t airbrushed, aspirational figures. The series is confident enough to draw complex portraits that render each character as despicable as they are endearing. Mainly, it’s their naivety that appeals. They are children attempting to be adults, constantly confronted by their own shortcomings. Even those of us who didn’t grow up as privileged New Yorkers should be able to remember how that feels. Girls is a comedy with actual jokes. We need as many of those as we can get. \

One month after a gay Wyoming student was bashed and left

to die on a fence at the outskirts of town, a theatre group arrived to investigate. this was actually the real-life catalyst for The Laramie Project – an acclaimed play written by that theatre group in 1999. a decade later, the same group revisited the town and found a society still wrestling with issues of denial and social change. the result is this standalone piece of documentary theatre, performed here by Melbourne’s Red stitch. it promises to be every bit as affecting as the first. \

musicVALTARI \ Sigur Rós (Capitol)

Trying to describe a Sigur Rós album feels oddly like making notes on whale song. Like those submarine symphonies, these songs are ethereal, elusive and quite stunningly beautiful. There’s also the nagging sense that perhaps we’re missing a joke. While the similarly ethereal Cocteau Twins sang songs without words, these Icelanders merely sing words few of us understand. To an Anglophone, there’s a certain mythic mystery to titles such as Ekki múkk and Varðeldur, but it’s possible they’re just singing about burnt toast, lost socks or late buses. Perhaps part of the appeal of Sigur Rós is as much about what their music shows us of ourselves as what it tells us about them. This is music that evokes powerful emotions, then leaves us to wonder what they mean. We construct our own narratives, whether they be mythic or mundane. To me, a track such as Varúð feels at once downcast and triumphant, as if its hero is recovering from some devastating blow. To someone else, it might evoke something as pretty and life-affirming as a sunset. Whatever it means, this is magical stuff. \

We love it\ p18

every suburb has them. Those estates that define a suburb and mark its special character.

Hawthorn has the Grace Park Estate, Malvern has the Gascoigne. In Eaglemont, the Burley Griffin Estate

is the place to be. Designed by the great American architect Walter Burley Griffin in the 1920s, its circular boulevards and leafy streets follow the contours of the land.

At 1 Outlook Drive, it is the Spanish mission single-level villa that is still taking advantage of the architect’s inspired planning nearly 100 years later.

The property, built in the 1930s, is more than a mere house and garden – and what a terrific garden it is – it also has a back gate into the exclusive parkland that sets it apart from the pack.

For families whose houses abut this park, it is like having an extension of the back garden. These parks – and Eaglemont has more than one – become places for picnics, birthdays and play – a little like having a country block on the other side of the back fence.

Which may go some of the way to explaining why Eaglemont is a such tightly held suburb, with residents staying an average of 12.5 years.

The house in question is solid brick with a stucco finish. Its elevated verandah has the triple arches and barley-twist columns typical of the front detailing of the Spanish mission style.

A low-maintenance front garden, filled with native plants and ground covers, leads to the verandah.

Double front doors with intricate leadlight patterns in the glazing open to a parquetry-floored hallway. The formal lounge and main bedroom, both off the front hall, have lovely, big, broad leadlight windows that let in the light. In both rooms, mocha carpet complements the white walls and ceilings. Elaborate ceiling mouldings and picture rails are more original features.

Yet this is no museum piece. The window sills, hall

cupboard and other timber features traditionally stained dark, are painted white to match the rest of the interiors, making this is very much a light-filled house.

Renovated in 2005, it offers separate zoned living, a white marble en suite and walk-in wardrobe for the main bedroom, informal living and dining room and a sparkling new kitchen.

The kitchen, with granite splashbacks and granite benches along two walls, is packed with Smeg and Asko appliances. Excellent storage is provided by the white cabinets above and below the benchtops. The kitchen is also conveniently close to the formal dining room, which should make entertaining easy.

Parquetry flooring provides continuity from the front hall to the kitchen and the informal living areas.

Bedrooms two and three at the back of the house are effectively in a wing of their own, separated from the main living areas. One room incorporates a study. The family bathroom is large, with dual basins set into a white marble benchtop, a separate bath and frameless glass shower.

The living hub opens through two sets of glass french doors to a broad terrace that allows residents and visitors alike to appreciate just how serene this block is – and marvel at the fact that the city centre is only 10 kilometres away. You’d never know that in this back garden, where on a brisk May morning the only sound is from the birds.

The terrace, which can hold a big table for outdoor entertaining and still have room to move, looks across the lawn and back garden.

Two steps lead to the lawn and an informal arrangement of stone pavers to the back gate and “secret garden”.

Being in such an established neighbourhood, this property also benefits from the borrowed landscape of the surrounding properties, including the magnificent oak tree in the next-door garden. \

While the fate of this charming 1930s brick cottage is uncertain, the property at No.10 is sure to bring its new owners many happy times.

Located in tree-lined Brooke Street, this stretch of the Walter Burley Griffin’s famed Mount Eagle Estate does not share the traffic of its neighbours.

It has the sleepiness of a country lane – all within cooee of the city and elite private schools.

What gives this property the appeal of an Enid Blyton picture book are, of course, the old deciduous trees and the private walkway that leads directly to a secret park.

Glen Park Reserve is a stunning common garden shared only by immediate neighbours. If the backyard

It’s obvious from the address that this property is a unit or townhouse. What it doesn’t tell you is that the size of the block is more akin to that of a house. This single-level, three-bedroom unit sits on a

generous 433-square metre block and is one of just two in this seven-year-old subdivision. There are more benefits of being No.2: you are tucked away from the traffic buzzing along Cherry Street. The position, particularly for empty nesters, is ideal. Not only does Cherry Street border parkland, it also leads to the station and Macleod village. This property suits growing families for its vicinity to a high-quality kinder and schools, including Macleod College. The interiors impress with the two distinct living areas and stylish kitchen with CaesarStone benches and Smeg oven. Glass sliding doors lead to a large covered deck. Accommodation is zoned. The front bedroom has an en suite and walk-in wardrobe. Two more bedrooms share a family bathroom and powder room. \ LIAM CARTER

Those who know Viewbank well will know that Henderson Road is almost not in Viewbank at all. It runs along the suburb’s eastern boundary, sharing a curb with farmland. The other side of Henderson Road

is occupied by brown or beige brick 1970s houses, which, unlike their neighbours to the west, enjoy the countryside at their doorstep. At No.15, you really do get the best of city and county. Bike and walking tracks through rolling greenery in one direction and proximity to amenities, such as Viewbank’s top-performing schools, in the other. This corner property makes up for its modest (548 square metres) block size with ample living space across two levels. The top floor houses the family living hub, which opens to the front verandah. There is a separate kitchen and meals area with access to a second terrace. Three bedrooms, including the main with en suite and walk-in wardrobe, are also up top. Below is a double garage and a self-contained unit. \ LIAM CARTER

of this 799-square metre block wasn’t big enough already, the kids will have even more space to let their imaginations roam.

The cottage has, of course, seen better days, but is not without its virtues. It retains many period features, such as the diamond leadlight windows that peek out of the façade, the arched portico entrance and the fireplace in the lounge.

Despite an extension, which hails from the 1970s, the house remains cosy in dimensions.

It would be easy to see how a creative buyer, with a penchant for the classics, could retain the sturdy, more attractive front half and build something more suited to the family out back. \ LIAM CARTER

As the address suggests, there’s no shortage of mountain views from this property. Positioned on the high side of Rosanna’s prestigious Mountain View Parade, this four-bedroom 1970s house

makes the most of its vistas. The views of the Dandenongs add to the elegance of the

downstairs dining room, but are most impressive from the two bedrooms upstairs. These multipane windows are not only there to look out, but are features in themselves. Akin to an alpine chalet, the squared dormers form part of a steep cedar-shingled façade. If only the Dandenongs were capped in snow.

The interiors befit the property’s impressive street presence. The stylish front lounge has a fireplace for winter warmth. It is one of five living rooms downstairs, including a central family room lined in clerestory windows, a sunroom out back and a second meals area, which opens to the new kitchen. It has a vast, stone island bench, stainless steel appliances and green-glass splashback.

The main bedroom is tucked away downstairs but is not lacking in space. Facing the back patio, it has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The kids reside in the three bedrooms upstairs, which share a grand bathroom complete with dressing room.

There is even more room to move downstairs with the office, workshop and two-car garage. \ LIAM CARTER
