The best professional preparation Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Germany with around 15,000 students, 340 professors, and over 50 degree programs. The university’s range of programs and research capacities extends from engineering sciences, mathematics, informa- tion science and computer science to management, social sciences, and social work, as well as architecture, media, and design. The practice-oriented academic education offered at the university has an excellent reputation. Graduates rate highly by German recruitment professionals, as surveys from the business and economics magazine ‚Wirtschaftswoche’ have repeatedly shown. Karl-Heinz Streibich, CEO of Software AG, says: “Students at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences receive well- grounded technical expertise, team spirit and a sophisticated practical basis from their studies. That’s why we are happy to involve them as interns, student trainees, and later as full employees in our company.” Then and now The university, previously named “Fachhochschule Darm- stadt”, was founded in 1971 from several precursor institu- tions. The roots of the present-day Departments of Archi- tecture and Civil Engineering stretch as far as back as the middle of the 19th century, to the “Landesbaugewerkschule Darmstadt”. The design degree programs can look back on a history of over 100 years. In 2006, the university was re- named Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, or h_da for short (pronounced H-D-A). A presence in two cities h_da departments are situated in five locations within the city of Darmstadt as well as in nearby Dieburg. Research for a strong regionApplied research and development play a key role at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. They enrich the excellent teaching by constantly stimulating new topics of study and support the integration of students in research projects in the context of modern project-based stu-dies. They are also an important contribution by h_da to strengthening the region; in technology and design transfer, as well as in cooperative research projects, h_da works closely with scientific institutions and numerous regional businesses.

Centres for research and development and technology transfer, as well as a number of interdisciplinary institutes and research groups, support the scholars and shape the public profile of h_da research. Among the research groups is the Special Research Centre for Institutional Analysis (Sofia), which is working together with a partner university in the Hessen regional research program

“LOEWE” to conduct research focusing on “the intrinsic logic of cities”. h_da is also involved in several other re-search centres and projects that are part of this excel-lence program.

Starting a career and lifelong qualificationsh_da offers advisory and referral services to help its gra-duates along their career path. Recruitment fairs, JobPor-tal, integrated work-study degree courses, and a course-related trainee program bring potential employers and future skilled personnel together during students‘ universi-ty courses. Company founders find ideal starting conditions in the departments offered at h_da.

For people who are already employed, h_da offers continu-ing education courses at certificate, bachelor, and master degree level. Distance learning and attendance outside working hours enable courses to be adapted to working students’ needs. Students can enhance their qualifica-tions for further progress in their careers by studying for an MBA or by pursuing Germany‘s first distance learning degree course in electrical engineering. Together with the renowned Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM) in Paris, the Department of Computer Science offers continuing education degree programs that can be studied alongside employment. Programs in social work,

civil engineering, or chemical and biotechnology round off the spectrum of qualifications on offer.

A worldwide networkDegree programs and research at h_da have strengthened the international focus in recent years. Comprising 19% of the student body, international students shape the character of the university. Along with a varied language program, the university also offers several degrees taught entirely in En-glish. These include electrical engineering, an MBA program, a media studies degree program in cooperation with an Irish university and the Joint International Master (JIM) in Compu-ter Science, taught by h_da in conjunction with universities from the United States and Australia.

All h_da students will be supported should they wish to enrich their studies through a period abroad at a partner university or through a work placement at a partner compa-ny. h_da cooperates with around 100 universities worldwide in teaching and research. It is possible to obtain PhD degrees abroad at international partner universities – in England or Ireland, for example.

Scholars at h_da also conduct research and consultancy projects with international partners. European cooperation partners include Spain, Sweden, France, and Finland. Other projects involve partners from non-European countries such as China and Brazil.
