CourseDescription
In2019,museumsworldwidemarkedthe500thanniversaryofLeonardodaVinci’sdeathwithspecialexhibitionscelebratinghisartisticandscientificachievements.Inthiscourse,wewillexaminetherelationshipbetweenartandscienceintheRenaissance,withspecialemphasisonart’sintellectualunderpinningsinItalyandintheworksandnotebooksofLeonardodaVinci(1452-1519).Whilewemayoftenthinkofartandscienceasseparatedomains,Renaissanceartistsandintellectualsappreciatedtheirinterdependence.Inthe15thand16thcenturies,Renaissance‘artist-scientists’masteredtechniquesofnaturalisticrepresentationthatlentauthority,credibility,andasenseofobjectivitytodepictionsofthenaturalworld.EmpiricalstudyofnatureandnaturalhistoryalsofosteredpracticesofRenaissanceartproductionandscientificillustration,andtransformedfieldssuchasgeography,astronomy,biology,andbotany.
Inthiscourse,wewillexplorehowthepracticesofartandsciencedependedonandinformedoneanotherinRenaissanceEurope.Wewillexaminedrawings,paintings,andprintsinrelationtonumerousissuessurroundingthereproductionanddisseminationofvisualinformation.Keythemeswillinclude:Renaissanceconceptionsofartasaformofscientia(knowledge);Renaissancenaturalism;technologicalinnovationsinimageproduction(e.g.,printmaking);theroleofrepresentationinscientificinvestigations;andtheprerogatives,practices,andpatronageofartist-scientistsintheRenaissance.ThiscoursemeetsthecriteriaforelectivecreditintheCollegeofArtsandSciences.CourseLearningObjectives
Bytheendofthecourse,studentswill:- recognizeregionalstylesandfunctionsofNorthernandSouthernRenaissanceart- masterfundamentalconceptsandessentialterminologypertainingtothemedia,
materials,techniques,content,andcontextsofRenaissanceartandscientificillustration
- demonstrateanunderstandingoftherelationshipbetweenimageproductionandknowledgeproduction,invarioussocial,political,economic,and/orreligiouscontexts
