UMTS Architecture
• UMTS: Universal
Mobile
Telecommunications
System
• PLMN: Public Land
Mobile Network
• UTRAN: UMTS
Terrestrial Radio
Access Networks
• UE: User Equipment
• ME: Mobile
Equipment
• USIM: Universal
Subscriber Identity
Module
• UE = ME + USIM

UTRAN Architecture
• RNS: Radio Network Systems
• RNC: Radio Network Controller
• Node B: a UMTS term to denote
the BTS
• Interfaces:
– Node B x RNC : Iub
– RNC x RNC : Iur
– RNC x CN : Iu
• A UE can be served by multiple
cells simultaneously
• Node B uses WCDMA

Performing a target test at NodeB (cont)
Components in Environment
NodeB is real hardware with radio communication equipment,
amplifiers, alarms, a T1/E1, optional T3/E3, and OC3/STM1 facilities
interface, Ethernet switch, filters, and a user alarm interface
RNC : simulated
UE : real/ simulated (Qualcom , Ubinetics )
PET : Perl language
RMT : tool
Radio
Converter box
Linux box.
GUI tool for testing
- NPT – Nash Protocol Tester
NPT® is the Perl Environment for
Testing
Nash Protocol Tester is a
simulator for telecommunication
systems
interactive testing is supported
by NPT® using Perl
script language allows you to
implement almost any test case
Perl Environment Test
simulating the RNC/Core Network part of the Iub
interface
Allows complete simulation of various protocol stacks in
UMTS
Can control a lot of other test equipment, like VSA,
signal generators, test mobiles
Provides interface to test management system, e.g. for
submission of test results of automatic tests
Operational System
Verify scope of testing
Ensures that a SW release is basically running straight
forward at the NodeB.
Verifies the functionality of the NodeB network element at
its defined interfaces within a simulated environment.
Cover new features of the NE as well as features included
in previous releases.
Verifies impact on an already stable system
Check software fulfilling the given system requirements at
a specified hardware configuration
