HBA members conducted 18 face-to-face meetings with senate and House members of the Missouri General Assembly last month during Missouri Legislative Day in Jefferson City. The HBA’s key message was to urge legislators to support a regulatory and business environment for home building that is simple, certain and efficient. HBA members also educated legislators about the state of the housing industry in the Kansas City metro area and urged them to oppose any mandatory requirements on builders, developers and associates at a time when the housing industry is still in a delicate recovery.

The HBA would like to thank its members who participated in Missouri Legislative Day. Nothing compares to the annual spring Parade of Homes, a Kan-sas City tradition for more than fifty years. Builders of 322 homes are roll-ing out welcome mats to the public throughout the metropolitan area, April 20-May 5. This year’s event is sponsored by stewart Title.

The spring Parade of Homes offers a wealth of housing choices and is an opportunity to discover all of the in-novative options available in today’s new homes. whether buyers are look-ing for homes that offer energy effi-ciency and green living or for designs aimed at making homes accessible and enjoyable, local builders are con-sistently looking for ways to make

homes better than ever. Variety is also a hallmark of this

event with 92 builders represented in eight counties, 24 school districts and prices ranging from $170,000-$2 mil-lion. with interest rates still hovering around historic lows, there’s no better time to buy a new home.

Homes will be open daily 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and admission is free. Kansas City has 14 Months of GrowthFebruary 2013 marks the fourteenth month of continued improvement for the Greater Kansas City housing economy, according to the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City’s (HBA) monthly Residential Building Permit statistics report. And February, like January, shows again that single family housing starts were their strongest in four years with 224. Not since February 2008 when 262 permits were issued has the area seen this much single family activity in the second month of the year.

“Builders are encouraged that they saw early buyers last month, but are concerned about the possibility of rising building material costs, labor availability, increasing lot costs and continuing tax uncertainties,” said executive Vice President sara Corless. “In spite of this, the February numbers further support a big spring Parade of Homes and that keeps the industry optimistic about growth.”

Overall most counties increased their permit numbers over last year with only slight decreases in Clay and Platte Counties. Year to date Johnson County led the area with 221 single family units followed by Jackson County with 75, Clay County with 70, Platte County with 48, and wyandotte with 38.

Kansas City remains the top permitting jurisdiction with 90 units in 2013 followed by Overland Park at 66, Olathe at 62 and Kansas City, Kansas/wyandotte County with 36. Lenexa reported an 81 unit multi-family project. Year to date the metro area has 578 total units versus 402 for the same period in 2012 for a 44 percent increase.
