The 2013-14 school year is off to a great start and we are well into the school year. One of our ongoing goals is to communicate information to all of our parents and to our school community in a timely manner. One of our primary means of communication is our school website. I encourage you to bookmark our web address www.edmonds.wednet.edu/mths and check it regularly. There is a wealth of information and news that can be found on our website about our school and upcoming events for our students, families and the community. Another way we connect with our families is through the use of email. All of our correspondence goes out via email so it is really critical that we have a current email address for each of our families. We don’t want to miss anyone with the information we send out so please check to make sure we have your current email address in Skyward. Among the reasons to celebrate this school year is the fact that we have several new teachers joining our school this year, thanks in large part to additional state funding that the Edmonds School District received at the end of this year’s legislative session. We were able to place extra resources into our classes for 9th and 10th graders as well as Math and Science classes with the specific intent to lower class sizes in these core academic requirements. A major focus of our work this school year will be on supporting each other as we implement a new teacher and principal evaluation system. The new evaluation system allows us to focus more specifically on the work of our teachers and gives us ample opportunities work together to improve our instructional skills with the specific intent to ensure that all of our students are learning at the highest levels possible. Much of our time on our non-student Fridays has been spent working on developing our skills in the new evaluation system and we will continue to focus on it as this year progresses. The other major focus of our work this year will be working together in Professional Learning Communities. Our teachers are working together in collaborative teams that meet weekly to learn from one another by looking at performance data on students in their classes and by examining instructional practices that are the most effective in terms of helping all students learn at high levels. Our teachers are very committed to this work and they meet every week, up to 3.5 hours each month specifically focusing on those practices that work well and lead to all students learning. Finally, I want to extend an invitation to all of you to get involved in our school community by joining our PTSA. We have an incredible group of parents who are working alongside us to help make our school a better place. Our PTSA is NOT a fundraising group. True there are some fundraising activities that take place each year, but our PTSA is more about extending our school community to include our parents, to keep everyone informed about goings-on here at MTHS, and to provide meaningful ways for parents to connect with our school through volunteering to support the needs of our students and teachers. Our PTSA meets the first Monday of every month at 7 pm in the MTHS Library. Please come check out a meeting and consider joining our group! That’s all for now. I want to let you know that MTHS is committed to the success of each student in our school. If there is anything we can do to help you support your student’s success here, please do not hesitate to contact us. We want to partner with you to ensure that your student is successful here and gets the outstanding educational experience that he/she deserves.

Fall Happenings at MTHS Hello to our parent and school community.

Hawk Talk - 2

Homework Help: Study Hawks is held every day after school till 3:15 in the Library. Students come in, sign in with their name and the subjects they are working on, and are supervised by Ms. VanSenus. Furthermore, Ms. Paine is available to help students individually with math on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This is a great time for students to get their homework done before they get home to the distractions of TV, video games, etc! There is an activity bus every day that leaves at 3:20 pm.

All members of Honor Society have a requirement to participate in Peer Tutoring. If your student needs a tutor in any subject, have them contact Ms. Petterson in the counseling department to request a tutor.

The Teen Services Coordinator for Sno-Isle, Dawn Rutherford, gave us some great brochures for their homework help services. She particularly hopes that we’ll promote their free one-on-one online tutoring service, “HelpNow From Brainfuse” http://www.sno-isle.org/explore/helpnow/

The service has been expanded to include skills tutorials, writing critiques, practice tests, and foreign language help. Sno-Isle’s selection of databases is outstanding – all that is needed for access is a current library card #.

wHat else Can I Do to Help my stuDent? Weekly progress report forms (located on the counseling center counter) are one way to help a struggling student stay on track. Students can take these forms to teachers before or after school and have the teacher comment on their progress, or confirm that the correct homework assignment was written down. This is often a good communication time with student and teacher, especially if the student is getting off track.

attn: all parents & GuarDIans: In a perfect world, we would all get a good night’s sleep and start the day with breakfast! But it is especially important for students to enhance their learning power during the day by starting the day out rested and well nourished. Also, we cannot stress enough how important it is that students ask for help early and often when struggling in a class. Most teachers are in their classes before school and are available to help. Your student still needs your attention, especially with organization and keeping a planner up to date as to deadlines and testing, and knowing who their friends are. Encourage your students to take advantage of our school activities, clubs and athletic events. We know that MTHS is a great place to be, and gaining a sense of belonging here is a great way to foster success and enjoyment in these exciting years.

BIG news: This fall we are happy to welcome our new counselor Rebecca Brennan, who is job-sharing with Colleen Egger. Rebecca was our excellent intern last year, and she brings a wealth of energy and new ideas to our department!

new! CounselInG Department Drop-In tImes: Counselors are available to see students on a drop-in basis all of 4th period, which includes both lunches. The Counseling Office will be closed from 12:15-12:45 for counseling staff lunches. Students may make appointments with their counselors outside of these hours.

How Is my stuDent DoInG? While academic success is the primary goal we share with parents, students are often less likely to share their academic progress with parents as they get older. This is normal behavior for adolescents as they move toward independence. However, parents and guardians still need to monitor how their student is doing in school. Parents can check your student’s current grades (updated every 2 weeks by staff), attendance, graduation requirements and progress towards graduation, staff names, voice mail numbers, email, and a wealth of student and school information via Skyward. Click on the Skyward button on our MTHS homepage and then log-in using your individual login and password. Call the Counseling Office if you have misplaced this information. Better yet, let your student

train you on how to use it and then ask your student to check it on a particular day every few weeks to show you how

she/he is doing. This might even spark a much-needed conversation between the two of you.

If you have questions about specific classes, we encourage you to contact teachers by email. Email is a faster way to access teachers than voice mail. All teachers have a similar email address: last name first initial @ edmonds.wednet.edu

Counseling Center Connections (cntd.)

Please encourage your Senior to schedule a Senior Interview with their counselor asap!!! Individual Senior Interviews allow us to help seniors identify their goals for their education beyond high school, and to map out all the important steps involved in reaching those goals. We update our website (see the Counseling/Career center tab on the MTHS website) regularly on scholarship, college, financial aid and other important events/topics at MTHS. If your senior is applying for college, we encourage him/her to start early and adhere to important deadlines.

Other timely information: • Official transcripts cost $1.00 and are ordered through the

counseling secretaries, Kim Runkel and Vicki Stewart, and require 24 hours’ notice.

• Counselor recommendation letters require a 3 week’s notice. Counselors need enough lead time to get feedback from teachers and to give serious thought to writing a great letter. Students must submit a senior resume and complete a Letter of Recommendation Personal Data Form (available from the Counseling Center tab) to their counselor as part of this process. The information students provide helps us write the best possible letter of recommendation.

• Financial Aid Night will be Tuesday, January 14th at 7:00 pm in the MTHS Library. We encourage parents and seniors to attend this event. Danette Iyall, Assistant Director of Financial Aid at UW Bothell will present information about the FAFSA and answer your questions. A Spanish interpreter will be available as well.

• Is your senior on track to graduate? Seniors should have at least 16 credits and be registered for required classes. After viewing your student’s Skyward status towards graduation, you may have questions, especially about a senior still needing to pass the HSPE or End of Course (EOC) math exams to graduate. Seniors must pass at least one math EOC to graduate, or a state-approved alternative. Contact your senior’s counselor with questions.

• Check the Career Center Webpage often for updates on information about SAT/ACT testing, college visits, scholarship information, and more!

All Juniors took the PSAT on Oct. 16th this year. We will receive the scores following winter break; information about test and score interpretation will be available at that time. We help students understand their scores and provide them with vital information for their junior year college planning, give tips on how to improve SAT and/or ACT scores, etc. Juniors are also encouraged to attend college representative visits to our school by checking in the Career Center to sign up for upcoming events and checking Skyward. The earlier juniors plan, the smoother their senior year and college application process will go. Don’t wait until fall of next year to start visiting colleges or going online to research colleges—try to squeeze some visits in now.

Four year college bound juniors should sign up for either the SAT or the ACT test this spring so that they will have the results by the summer. The links to the sites are on the Career Center Webpage. This will give them time to re-take the test should they choose to do so in time for college application deadlines in the fall.

Juniors should have between 10 and 12 credits to be on track for graduation. If your junior failed a portion of the HSPE last year, the student needs to retake only that portion failed in the spring. All juniors should be enrolled in math or a math equivalent. Juniors must pass one EOC (End of Course) exam in math to graduate.

College-bound Juniors: FYI, the junior year is usually the last chance a student will have to show their grades on a transcript sent to a college next fall, since most college deadlines occur before grades from first semester of senior year are posted to transcript. This is an important year for juniors planning to apply to a four year college right out of high school to show them what they can do!

All sophomores took the PLAN Act test on Oct. 16 this year. This assessment can help 10th grade students measure their current academic development, explore career/training options, and make plans for the remaining years of high school and beyond. Counselors will be assisting in the interpretation of students’ results in January.

Now is a great time for sophomores to get involved in some school activity or sport if they haven’t already. Participation in school and community activities provides vital experiences for your student to learn new leadership skills, further their interests, find new interests, learn new responsibilities, and learn more about themselves in the process. Community service has become a pivotal item which colleges and scholarship foundations look for when considering applicants. It is also a wonderful way for a student to learn more about the world outside themselves and help build self-esteem. The Career Center is a great place to start looking at these types of volunteer activities.

Spring is the mandatory state wide HSPE test which all sophomores will be required to take. Results will be mailed directly to parents and guardians. Opportunities will be provided for continuing retakes if needed in the summer and following years.

Parents of Sophomores who took the PSAT on October 17—please see Junior Parent section regarding score interpretation.

Congratulations, your student has made it into their high school years and is hopefully learning to juggle 6 classes and do homework every night! The high school transition is challenging for many freshmen students—and parents. Good attendance is critical to academic success, so we monitor it carefully. There is more homework assigned, nearly every day in math especially, so if your student says they have no homework it is worth investigation. Though your student may want you to leave them alone about school, let them know you will be monitoring their progress on Skyward. Teachers update Skyward about every two weeks.

please reaD If your stuDent Has a DoG allerGy: We have a student at MTHS who has a therapy service dog. If your student has a dog allergy, please contact the school nurse so we can determine any risk by being in the same room as the dog. People are never allowed to touch or pet a working service dog so contact will never be an issue. Please contact Julie Hill, RN, [email protected] or 425-431-1066. Thank you.

meDICatIon polICy: I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you the medication policy at MTHS. This is often much confusion over whether a student can carry medication on their person and “self-medicate” for acute or chronic illnesses.

Students can carry OVER THE COUNTER (OTC) medications on their person and self-medicate when needed. Examples of OTC medications are Advil for headaches, Tums or Pepto-Bismol for stomach upset, etc. Students can only carry the medication if necessary, bring in a one-day supply, and carry the medication in the ORIGINAL container. We want students to stay in class! Their name needs to be written on the outside of the container. We do NOT need a doctor’s order for this!

A student can carry prescribed medication for diagnosed medical conditions such as an inhaler for asthma, EpiPen’s for life-threatening allergic reactions, and antibiotics for infections. All medication must be in the original container with the pharmacy label attached with only a one-day supply of the medication. I need to be aware of any student with a chronic health condition who carries prescribed medication on their person.

Julie Hill, RNAt MTHS Mondays

& Wednesdays

[email protected]

Students who need medication, such as controlled medications (Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, etc.), administered by school staff should obtain the paperwork from the attendance office or go to the district website. The health care provider and parent must complete/sign the paperwork and once the form and medication have been received, staff can administer.

Staff does not have a supply of medication that can be given to students such as Tylenol, Tums, etc. Legally, we can ONLY administer medication to students who have written authorization from the health care provider and parent and the medication must be supplied by the parent. Only staff that has been trained by the nurse can administer medication.

Health information is communicated with teachers through Skyward and this information is viewable by parents. Please go Skyward to view the information, if any, written there and contact me with any update or new health information.Thank you for your assistance in keeping MTHS a safe and healthy place. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

One Valedictorian for the graduating class will be selected. The student with the highest GPA will be the Valedictorian. For purposes of determining the highest GPA and the Valedictorian, MTHS will use a weighted GPA system.

To qualify for Valedictorian, students may not have any P grades for core academic classes and must attend MTHS for a minimum of 4 semesters. Students who select the Pass / Unsatisfactory option will not be eligible for Valedictorian, Salutatorian or be included in the Top % of the Senior Class.

In the event of a tie, the Principal will review students’ academic records and make the final determination about selection of the Valedictorian.

Need help with research projects?

Links to useful databases and websites are as close as the Library page on the MTHS website. Look for the updated list of “Online Databases for Students” and links to “Ms. Meier’s webpage” and the MTHS Library catalog.

My favorite database is Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL). It really is a reference library! Student and adult researchers will find high quality information on a wide range of topics. It offers audio versions of text, translations in numerous languages, and more study friendly options. Other Gale databases include:

• Opposing Viewpoints – great for very current information on a wide range of research topics

• US History in Context & World History in Context – essays, excerpts from reference books, article, audio, video, images and more for virtually any history topic covered in high school social studies

Another great set of databases are available through Proquest:

• Proquest Periodicals and Newspaper Research – the top resource for articles from recognized publishers

• e-Library – newspapers, magazines, transcripts of broadcasts, speeches, and more in an easily navigated format designed for student use

• Proquest History Study Center – articles, primary sources, and more for most high school social studies topics

• Proquest Literature – scholarly information on authors, poets, novels, and poetry often studied in high school English classes.

Finally, the old standby Encyclopedia Britannica isn’t so old anymore. The digital version features three reading levels, audio for all articles, translations, images, multi-media, and more. It’s an excellent first stop for gaining basic information on a topic.

Sports Fans thank you for Books!

Thanks to generous donors and the great gift of matching funds from Alderwood Mall, the Library was able

to raise $$$ for a much needed selection of sports books.

The DonorsChoose.org project was funded in just one week! What a great start to October. Look for the new books

to start appearing on our shelves soon.

Access to the online databases is provided by the District. Because these are paid subscription sites, usernames and passwords can’t be posted on-line. Just check with me or with classroom teachers

to obtain the necessary log-in information. Contact me through the link in “Ms. Meier’s Webpage” or call me at 425-431-2533.

Celebrating our Students

One of the highest correlates for student success in school is attendance. Attending school consistently and on-time is very important. Washington State has a compulsory attendance law which requires that children attend school and which describes the reasons that an absence from school can be excused. The Mountlake Terrace High School Attendance policy can be found on the MTHS website and is also described in the Student Handbook, also on the MTHS website.

If you know in advance that your student will be leaving school early, please write a note in pen, dated, and signed. Please be specific in the date and time of the student’s departure. Instruct your student to bring the note to the Attendance Office either before school or during lunch. All notes must be turned in on the day of the early dismissal and prior to the student’s departure.

If you call the Attendance office for an early dismissal, please allow 20 to 30 minutes so we can expedite your student’s departure in a timely manner.

If you come to pick up your student, you will be required to present your picture I.D.

Thank you for your cooperation. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
