There’s a good rea-son why thekitchen and bath
are the most remodeledrooms in the home.When appliances, coun-tertops and cabinets be-come worn and dated,the atmosphere of theentire home is affected.
Yes, the home startsto feel “old.”
Owners planning tosell are generally ad-vised by their Realtorthat an investment inkitchen and bath re-modeling will probablybe recovered in thesales price, and that thekitchen is often the firstroom in the house po-tential buyers will in-vestigate.
Recently, the ownersof a 30-year-old homein Kailua’s Hillcrestcommunity — who lovetheir home and had nointention of selling it —
decided they would getmore enjoyment out oftheir abode if they up-graded and updated thekitchen and three baths.
The home was de-signed with an openfloor plan, with the pro-ject’s objective being toavoid opening up thekitchen and creating agreat room. The own-ers’ preference was toretain the kitchen as aseparate room whilemaking better use of theexisting space.
New cherry woodcabinets, granite coun-tertops, and ceramictile flooring were in-stalled. The oven andcooktop were replaced.“Appliance garages”were added under thecabinets to create aclean look and clear ad-ditional work space.Since the room was notlarge enough for an is-
land, two peninsulaswere added.
As a general contrac-tor as well as a kitchendesigner, Homeworkshas the expertise toperform structuralwork when needed. Inthis case, the Home-works’ team opened upa portion of thekitchen’s ceiling, whichhad originally beendropped to accommo-date an air conditioningduct and recessed light-ing, and the result was amore spacious feel dueto the extra foot inheight. The raised por-tion was trimmed withcrown molding to cre-ate a new design fea-ture, and ceiling fanswere added. New win-dow spaces were creat-ed above the sink areasin both the kitchen andthe laundry room.
The master bath was
totally gutted and re-done, which involvedmoving the plumbingsystem. A new, over-sized shower was in-stalled on the opposite
side of the room fromthe original shower, uti-lizing additional spacemade available by theremoval of a largeJacuzzi tub the owners
noted they never used.Granite countertops,cherry wood cabinets,ceramic tile flooring,

Natural stone materialsoffer the widest se-lection of color and
unusual patterns — makingthem truly a sight to behold.They have differentgrades just like a dia-mond, so choosing astone product often re-quires great care and aneye for quality.
Once a selection ismade, the next most im-portant step is to hire astone specialist to do fab-rication and installationwork. When deciding ona tile contractor, the bestpractice is to selectsomeone who is both li-censed and insured inthat field of work. In ad-dition, care should al-ways be given when in-specting a contractor’sfinished projects.
Ultimately, a first-hand

Nano Tekon LLCprovides sealantsthat fill pores, as
well as coat and protectglass and natural stone.The sealants are perma-nently affixed, and there-by block the ongoing in-trusion of dirt, mold andgrime. Natural stoneshould always be sealed,and the sealing of glassstops spotting and streak-ing. Tekon sealants canalso be used to restorescratched glass.
Homeowners, con-struction professionals,architects and propertymanagers choose TekonSeal to preserve costly in-vestments in glass, win-dows, sun rooms, mir-
rors, shower doors, sky-lights, granite, countertops, tile, porcelain, stonefloors and walls.
These surfaces aresome of the most univer-sally used products inconstruction — and themost abused.
Tekon’s sealants are ef-fective with glass, gran-ite, porcelain, limestone,travertine, tile and metalsurfaces. The benefits ofusing Tekon’s sealantsare that they:
• Seal the surface fromcorrosion and stainingcaused by liquids, dustand atmospheric contam-inants;
• Repel liquids anddust that cause corrosion
and staining;• Keep glass
hygienicallyclean;
• Help surfaces staycleaner and clearer withminimum effort, and re-duce surface tension;
• Require no harshchemicals for cleaning;
• Will not change theappearance of the sur-face. No yellowing, blis-tering, cracking or peel-ing;
• Guarantee that costand effort are reduced upto 70 percent;
• Provide peace ofmind and confidence thatsurfaces will stay naturaland new looking;
• Offer limited lifetime
warranty on the treat-ment of most surfaces.
Nano Tekon also offersthe HydroCare system,the ultimate in electronicwater treatment.
HydroCare is a revolu-tionary breakthrough inthe treatment of hard wa-ter. One patented unittransmits a unique radiofrequency signal that ef-fectively breaks up exist-ing limescale that clogs inpipes, showers and appli-ances. It will prevent anyfuture buildup protectingthe entire plumbing sys-
tem and increasing effi-ciency. The electric fieldis generated through theentire plumbing systemand all water appliances.
More than 85 percentof homes or businesses inthe United States havehard water. Hard watercontains minerals thatdevelop into limescale.The limescale will buildup on the inner surfaceswherever there is waterflow and contact. The re-sults can manifest them-selves in the entireplumbing and in all appli-ances.
The problems have amajor impact in residen-tial, commercial and in-dustrial applications asthey increase down timefor repairs, increase re-placement costs and re-duce energy efficiencies.
Often, the extent of theproblems is not observedas they are in the interiorand are not exposed. Thepresence of overall limescale damage is evi-denced by reduced waterpressure, spotting ondishes, traces in theshowers, coffee makers,frequent repairs and ear-ly replacement of equip-ment.
The benefits of usingHydroCare are:
• It costs a fraction of awater softener;
• No maintenance isnecessary;
• Unclogs pipes andsaves thousands of gal-lons of water;
• Extends the life of theentire plumbing systemand appliances;
• Is environmentallyfriendly and healthy;
• Uses less than twowatts;
• Beneficial for swim-ming pools and spas

Nowhere does the green move-ment and uplifting design meetand marry better than in the
concept of “daylighting” — bringingnatural light into a space to bothbrighten it and reduce dependence onelectric lighting. Decorating and de-signing with natural light is not onlyenergy efficient, but psychologicallybeneficial as well.
A number of studies have linkedample exposure to daylight, to multi-ple emotional and physical health ben-efits, including improved learning instudents, reduced Seasonal AffectiveDisorder (SAD) in adults, and im-proved cognitive and motor skills inolder people. And by using less elec-tric lighting in favor of more natural
light, you can cut energy bills and re-duce your home’s impact on the envi-ronment.
If you’re into the idea of daylight-ing, be sure to consider how any de-sign or decorating change you makewill affect the quantity and quality ofnatural light entering your home. Youcan increase the amount of naturallight your home receives in a numberof ways. Some are as simple as replac-ing heavy, light-blocking drapes withlighter sheer curtains that allow inmore light.
When it comes to providing all thebenefits of natural light — in terms ofboth energy and design — it’s hard to

To really impress yourguests this summer,give your outdoor
soirées a little extra ele-gance that goes beyond theusual grill-out. The goodnews is that it’s easier thanyou’d imagine to create anambiance that is welcomingand sophisticated.
One of the keys to throw-ing an upscale backyardget-together is to plan inadvance. Once you have anidea of what you’d like todo, it’s time to start letting
people know. And we allknow how busy summerschedules are, so informingyour guests as much as afew weeks ahead of time isa courtesy they’ll appreci-ate.
Here are some of the ele-ments you’ll need to createthe perfect atmosphere foroutdoor entertaining thissummer.
• Decor: Having a jumbleof mixed and matchedchairs can be either charm-
ing or a visualdistraction. If you have anassortment of old woodenchairs, it gives things a rus-tic feel. If it’s decades-oldfolding chairs in clashingcolors and styles, it looksmismatched. Aim for a con-sistent look, whether it’sshabby chic or modern. Ifyour tables and surfacesdon’t tie in perfectly, there’san easy fix: simply coverthem with a tablecloth thathas the same feel as the restof your decor. Add planters
of flowers in colors that co-ordinate with your theme.
• Comfort: Swatting atinsects during a party is al-most impossible if you’reholding a beverage and aplate of hors d’oeuvres anduncomfortable even if yourhands are free. Warm sum-mer evenings often meanbare legs and arms, and thelast thing you want yourguests to remember is howmany bug bites they got.To add beautiful, soft light-
ing while dis-couragingbugs, opt formosquitoblocking can-dles. Placethem on tablesor aroundyour patio.
• Menu:Food does notneed to beelaborate to beboth beautifuland delicious.
Take a cue from the rusticfood traditions of Italy,France and Spain, wheresimple foods like gardenvegetables, artisan breadsand grilled meats make amajor impact with surpris-ingly easy preparation.Keep the focus on vegeta-bles and fruits, with one ortwo meat, poultry or fishoptions, to create a beauti-ful, healthy arrangement ofdishes.
• Music: Depending on
the mood you want to es-tablish, you can choosefrom an endless supply ofmusic available for down-load. Try salsa music forliveliness, flamenco guitarfor dramatic artistry,Malian kora music forserenity or updated bossanova for an unmistakablysummery, beachy feel.
Outdoor entertaining isone of the best thingsabout summer, whetheryou’re a host or a guest.When you’re hosting, themain goal is to create a re-laxing, lovely environmentduring which your guestscan forget their every care,whether it’s the stress ofwork or the usual summerannoyances of mosquitobites.
When you provide yourguests with a perfect es-cape for one evening,you’ve mastered outdoorentertaining.

beat the impact of energy efficient sky-lights.
Consider these advantages of skylights:
• They provide abundant natural light.Because skylights channel sunlight fromabove, they are unobstructed by trees orother buildings. You get the full effect ofnatural light flooding a room, but at yourcomplete discretion. Accessories likebuilt-in blinds or shades make it possibleto control exactly how much natural lightenters through your skylight.
• They solve a number of design prob-lems, like how to get more natural lightinto a bath or bedroom — two spots inthe house where you want both light andprivacy. If you’re finishing an attic to im-prove your home value or give your fami-ly more space, adding a skylight or roofwindow to the existing roof is more cost-effective than adding a dormer to accom-modate windows. In kitchens, ventingskylights not only brighten the mood of
the room, they are a great way to natural-ly vent cooking odors, heat and moisturefrom the room. Finally, skylights allowyou to naturally light a room without sac-rificing any space that you may need forstorage units, furniture or fixtures.
• Skylights can be a healthy, cost-effec-tive alternative to electric light. Not onlydo they provide the benefits of naturallight, once installed they cost little if any-thing to operate. Venting skylights are anenergy-efficient alternative to ventingfans for removing volatile organic com-pounds (VOCs), odors and humidity fromrooms.

guests to socialize. And no need to buy new furni-ture to make your outdoor space look new.Instead, apply a fresh coat of stain or spray paintto your existing wood or metal furniture for a styl-ish and updated look.
Manufacturers offer spray products, such as itsExterior Semi-Transparent Spray Stain andOutdoor Spaces spray paint, to make it quick andeasy to re-do your patio. Both are available in thelatest colors to complement any color schemeyou choose. Best of all, they dry quickly, and pro-vide superior protection against the outdoor ele-ments.
Once your furniture is finished, use yourrevamped pieces as a focal point, along with somesignificant accessories. Layer color, textures andheights to give the space a pulled-together appear-ance. Incorporate colorful place-mats and an inter-esting centerpiece on your table to set it apart.Place coordinating water-resistant pillows on abench or chairs to bring the comfort of indoor liv-ing outside.
And don’t forget about what is under your feet.By adding an outdoor area rug or mat, you’ll havea cohesive and stylish space.
Plants, pleaseOne of the greatest parts of having an outdoor
living area is being able to include natural ele-ments. Just like the indoors, nothing cheers up aroom like strategically placed fresh flowers. To
keep your space functional and clutter-free, lookfor pots and planters that work with the overalllayout of your space. If you have a balcony or longrailing, try using flower boxes that can affix tothem. Or, if you have the space for oversized potsand unique stands, simply place a few flowers inkey spots to create a space that will make yourneighbors green with envy.
In addition to flowers, fresh herbs can be a fra-grant, beautiful and useful addition to your patio— especially if you enjoy cooking. They areextremely easy to grow and care for, so add a fewdecorative herb pots to spice up the look of yourpatio, and your summer dishes.
Extraordinary extrasNext, get cozy in your outdoor space by adding
an outdoor fireplace or a fire pit. You can snugglewith that someone special, roast marshmallowswith friends or curl up with a good book on a coolnight. veloped a Display Certifi-cation, which requiresrigorous testing to provethat the television is ableto recreate the vivid con-trast, bright colors, anddetail present when amovie leaves the direc-tor’s studio. The certifica-tion ensures that whatviewers are seeing athome replicates themovie experience.
The only LED LCDs inthe U.S. to receive THXDisplay Certification arethe new Infinia HDTVs
from LG. These sets areequipped with Full LEDSlim technology that em-ploys patented back-light-ing for an ultra-slim depthwithout sacrificing pic-ture quality. By simply se-lecting one of the THXmodes on an LG LX9500or LE8500, you can turnyour living room into ascreening room with justthe touch of a button. Noprofessional installation isneeded.
SeatingWhy settle for a rickety
theater seat when you cantailor the seating in yourcinema to your comfort?Whether you favor acushy recliner or couch tocuddle on, the beauty ofhaving a home theater isbeing able to add thatsense of comfort that youmight not get at your lo-cal cinema.
Where do you place
your TV in relation toyour seating for optimalviewing? For the best seatin the house, Dean recom-mends the following dis-tances based on the sizeof your television:
• 35-inch TV = 3.5-5 feet
• 40-inch TV = 4-6 feet
• 50-inch TV = 5-7.5 feet
• 60-inch TV = 6-9 feet
LightingIt’s also important to
make the lighting in yourhome work with the TV.Some televisions havesettings that allow you toadjust the color to matchthe lighting in your livingroom with the touch of abutton. When evaluatingthe lighting in your homejust remember that darkeris most often better, soadd in dimmer switcheswhere you can.
SoundSome TVs have excel-
lent sound quality builtright in. You may, howev-er, wish to go with a sur-round sound system tocatch every whisper andfeel every explosion.
Place the main speakersat the front of the roomand make sure the tweet-ers are near ear level towhere you will be sitting.Hard surfaces will causesound to echo, so youmay want to considercovering uncarpetedfloors with a rug andplace curtains over anywindows.
AtmosphereHave some fun decorat-
ing the room with postersfrom your favorite moviesor get a popcorn maker.Part of the fun of having ahome theater is you canadd your own flair to themovie experience. Butmost importantly, makeyour space comfortable.

two sinks, and a newvanity with additionalstorage were additionalfeatures of the sparklingnew bathroom.
The guest bathroomwas also gutted and re-done, with the excep-tion being that the ex-isting bathtub was re-tained. Rather than re-place it, however, theowners opted to have itrecoated with a porce-lain finish.
The powder room hada “face-lift,” and the en-try was redesigned andreoriented. The existingstandard-hinged doorswere replaced by pock-et doors so they wouldno longer open directlyinto the main livingarea.
During the entire re-modeling process, theowners continued livingin the home. BecauseHomeworks was obser-vant of their schedules,inconveniences wereminimized. The ownersnoted that the only big
change in their lifestylewas using the mi-crowave and orderingtake-out more frequent-ly while work was inprogress in the kitchen.Homeworks also accom-modated the owners bytiming work on thebathrooms so at leastone was always accessi-ble.
